Selective Deposition of Catalytic Metals on Plasmonic Au Nanocups for Room-Light-Active Photooxidation of o-Phenylenediamine

A Pd-catalyzed route to carborane-fused boron heterocycles

Due to the expanding applications of icosahedral carboranes in medicinal and materials chemistry research, their functionalizations have become one of the central themes in boron-rich cluster chemistry. Although several strategies for incorporating nitrogen-containing nucleophiles on a single boron vertex of the icosahedral carboranes (C2B10H12) have been developed, methods for preparing clusters with vicinal B-N moieties are still lacking. The steric bulk of icosahedral carboranes and disparate electronic and steric nature of the N-containing groups have rendered the vicinal diamination challenging. In this article, we show how a developed Pd-catalyzed process is used to incorporate an array of NH-heterocycles, anilines, and heteroanilines with various electronic and steric profiles onto the vicinal boron vertices of a meta-carborane cluster via sequential or one-pot fashion. Importantly, oxidative cyclizations of the cross-coupling products with indoles and pyrroles appended to boron vertices generate a previously unknown class of all-boron-vertex bound carborane-fused six- and seven-membered ring heterocycles. Photophysical studies of the meta-carborane-fused heterocycles show that these structures can exhibit luminescence with high quantum yields and are amenable to further manipulations.

Steric hindrance-induced selective growth of rhodium on gold nanobipyramids for plasmon-enhanced nitrogen fixation

The construction of an antenna-reactor plasmonic photocatalyst that is composed of a plasmonic and a catalytically active metal holds great promise in driving N2 photofixation, but its photocatalytic performance is highly dependent on the spatial distribution of the two components. Up to now, the fabrication of dumbbell-shaped nanostructures featuring spatially separated architecture has remained challenging. Herein, we develop a facile synthetic strategy for the site-selective growth of a Rh nanocrystal 'reactor' on two tips of an Au nanobipyramid (NBP) 'antenna' through the precise manipulation of steric hindrance toward Rh overgrowth. The obtained Au NBP/tip-Rh nanodumbbells (Au NBP/tip-Rh NDs) can function as an excellent antenna-reactor plasmonic photocatalyst for N2 photofixation. In this scenario, the Au nanoantenna harvests light and generates hot electrons under plasmon resonance, meanwhile the hot electrons are transferred to the active sites on Rh nanocrystals for N2 reduction. In comparison with that of classical core@shell nanostructures, the spatially separated architecture of the Au NBP/tip-Rh NDs facilitates charge separation, greatly improving the photocatalytic activity. This study sheds new light on the structure-function relationship for N2 photofixation and benefits the design and construction of spatially separated plasmonic photocatalysts.

Macrocycle-Strutted Coordination Microparticles for Fluorescence-Monitored Photosensitization and Substrate-Selective Photocatalytic Degradation

The prosperous advancement of supramolecular chemistry has motivated us to construct supramolecular hybrid materials with integrated functionalities. Herein, we report an innovative type of macrocycle-strutted coordination microparticle (MSCM) using pillararenes as the struts and "pockets", which performs unique activities of fluorescence-monitored photosensitization and substrate-selective photocatalytic degradation. Prepared via a convenient one-step solvothermal method, MSCM showcases the incorporation of supramolecular hybridization and macrocycles, endowed with well-ordered spherical architectures, superior photophysical properties, and photosensitizing capacity, where a self-reporting fluorescence response is exhibited upon photoinduced generation of multiple reactive oxygen species. Importantly, photocatalytic behaviors of MSCM show marked divergence toward three different substrates and reveal pronounced substrate-selective catalytic mechanisms, attributing to the variety in the affinity of substrates toward MSCM surfaces and pillararene cavities. This study brings new insight into the design of supramolecular hybrid systems with integrated properties and further exploration of functional macrocycle-based materials.

Tipping Gold Nanobipyramids with Titania for the Use of Plasmonic Hotspots to Drive Amine Coupling

Designing plasmonic photocatalysts with spatially controlled catalytic sites is an effective strategy to boost the sunlight-driven chemical transformation efficiency through plasmonic enhancement. Herein, we describe a facile method for the synthesis of TiO₂-tipped Au nanobipyramids (NBPs) to give (Au NBP)/t-TiO₂ nanodumbbells. The surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide concentration is the key factor in the construction of this type of unique nanostructure. The photocatalytic aerobic oxidative coupling of amines using the plasmonic photocatalysts with the dumbbell-like and core@shell structures indicates that the TiO₂-tipped ends for the photo-reduction and the exposed adjacent Au surface for the photo-oxidation on (Au NBP)/t-TiO₂ can significantly improve the photocatalytic activity. The underlying mechanism of the photocatalytic oxidative coupling of benzylamine over (Au NBP)/t-TiO₂ has been thoroughly investigated. Both experimental and simulation results for (Au NBP)/t-TiO₂ and (Au nanorod)/t-TiO₂ confirm the important effect of the plasmonic hotspots on the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity.

WS2-Flake-Sandwiched, Au-Nanodisk-Enabled High-Quality Fabry-Pérot Nanoresonators for Photoluminescence Modulation

The increasing demand for compact and high-performance photonic devices drives the development of optical resonators with nanoscale sizes and ultrahigh quality factors. Fabry-Pérot (FP) resonators, the most widely employed optical resonators, can support ultrahigh quality factors in the simple structure, which is particularly attractive for applications in lasers, filters, and ultrasensitive sensors. However, the construction of FP resonators with both nanoscale sizes and high quality factors has still faced challenges. Herein we demonstrate the construction of FP nanoresonators out of single Au nanodisks (NDs) and a Au film, with a WS₂ flake sandwiched in between. The atomically flat surfaces of the WS₂ flake and Au NDs benefit mirror alignment and boost the quality factor up to 76. The nanoresonators can support FP resonances with different mode orders in the visible region. The optical properties and formation mechanisms of the high-quality FP modes are systematically studied. The FP modes are further hybridized with excitons in the WS₂ flake spacer, enabling the modulation of the WS₂ indirect band gap emissions. Our study combines the advantages of plasmonic nanoparticles and FP resonators, providing a promising platform for the development of compact nanophotonic devices such as tunable nanolasers, smart sensors, and photonic-circuit elements.

Construction of Spatially Separated Gold Nanocrystal/Cuprous Oxide Architecture for Plasmon-Driven CO2 Reduction

Plasmonic hot electrons have shown great potential in photocatalysis, but little is known about the hot hole-driven chemical reactions due to the lack of desired plasmonic metal/p-type semiconductor architectures. Herein, we describe a general and robust strategy for the site-selective growth of a p-type semiconductor, Cu₂O on Au nanocrystals (NCs), to produce diverse spatially separated Au/Cu₂O heterostructures. The preferential growth of Cu₂O on the tips/ends/edges of Au NCs is directed by the sparse coverage of the surfactant molecules at the high-curvature sites of Au NCs. The obtained dumbbell-shaped nanostructures serve as the ideal platforms for probing the hot-hole-mediated CO₂ reduction reaction. Benefiting from the hot-hole injection, a new reaction pathway is unlocked, and the C₂ product activity and selectivity are significantly improved. This study demonstrates the genuine superiority of the dumbbell-shaped nanostructures in photocatalysis, offering a new unique avenue to explore the underlying mechanism of hot-hole-mediated chemical reactions.

Plasmonic Hybrid Nanostructures in Photocatalysis: Structures, Mechanisms, and Applications

(Sun)Light is an abundantly available sustainable source of energy that has been used in catalyzing chemical reactions for several decades now. In particular, studies related to the interaction of light with plasmonic nanostructures have been receiving increased attention. These structures display the unique property of localized surface plasmon resonance, which converts light of a specific wavelength range into hot charge carriers, along with strong local electromagnetic fields, and/or heat, which may all enhance the reaction efficiency in their own way. These unique properties of plasmonic nanoparticles can be conveniently tuned by varying the metal type, size, shape, and dielectric environment, thus prompting a research focus on rationally designed plasmonic hybrid nanostructures. In this review, the term "hybrid" implies nanomaterials that consist of multiple plasmonic or non-plasmonic materials, forming complex configurations in the geometry and/or at the atomic level. We discuss the synthetic techniques and evolution of such hybrid plasmonic nanostructures giving rise to a wide variety of material and geometric configurations. Bimetallic alloys, which result in a new set of opto-physical parameters, are compared with core-shell configurations. For the latter, the use of metal, semiconductor, and polymer shells is reviewed. Also, more complex structures such as Janus and antenna reactor composites are discussed. This review further summarizes the studies exploiting plasmonic hybrids to elucidate the plasmonic-photocatalytic mechanism. Finally, we review the implementation of these plasmonic hybrids in different photocatalytic application domains such as H₂ generation, CO₂ reduction, water purification, air purification, and disinfection.

Toroidal dipole-modulated dipole-dipole double-resonance in colloidal gold rod-cup nanocrystals for improved SERS and second-harmonic generation

Colloidal metal nanocrystals (NCs) show great potential in plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy owing to their attractive and structure-depended plasmonic properties. Herein, unique Au rod-cup NCs, where Au nanocups are embedded on the one or two ends of Au nanorods (NRs), are successfully prepared for the first time via a controllable wet-chemistry strategy. The Au rod-cup NCs possess multiple plasmon modes including transverse and longitudinal electric dipole (TED and LED), magnetic dipole (MD), and toroidal dipole (TD) modulated LED resonances, producing large extinction cross-section and huge near-field enhancements for plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy. Particularly, Au rod-cup NCs with two embedded cups show excellent surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) performance than Au NRs (75.6-fold enhancement excited at 633 nm) on detecting crystal violet owing to the strong electromagnetic hotspots synergistically induced by MD, LED, and TED-based plasmon coupling between Au cup and rod. Moreover, the strong TD-modulated dipole-dipole double-resonance and MD modes in Au rod-cup NCs bring a 37.3-fold enhancement of second-harmonic generation intensity compared with bare Au NRs, because they can efficiently harvest photoenergy at fundamental frequency and generate large near-field enhancements at second-harmonic wavelength. These findings provide a strategy for designing optical nanoantennas for plasmon-enhanced applications based on multiple plasmon modes.

Synthesis of AuAg/Ag/Au open nanoshells with optimized magnetic plasmon resonance and broken symmetry for enhancing second-harmonic generation

The cooperation of magnetic and electric plasmon resonances in cup-shaped metallic nanostructures exhibits significant capability for second-harmonic generation (SHG) enhancement. Herein, we report an approach for synthesizing Au open nanoshells with tunable numbers and sizes of openings on a template of six-pointed PbS nanostars. The morphology of Au nanoshells is controlled by adjusting the amount of HAuCl₄, and the characteristic shapes of pointed nanocaps, open nanoshells, and hollow nanostars are obtained. Owing to the collaboration of electric and magnetic plasmon resonance modes, the Au nanoshells exhibit significantly broadened and highly tunable optical responses. Furthermore, the morphology-dependent SHG of the Au nanoshells shows two maximal SHG intensities, corresponding to four-opening and one-opening Au nanoshells with appropriate opening sizes. Ag/Au and AuAg/Ag/Au open nanoshells were further investigated to achieve enhanced SHG. By adjusting the thickness of the Ag shell, the SHG intensity of Ag/Au open nanoshells reaches a maximum due to the gradient field at the AuAg bimetallic interface. After replacing the Ag shells with Au shells, the SHG intensity of AuAg/Ag/Au open nanoshells reaches a maximum due to further symmetry breaking. These findings provide a strategy to prepare colloidal metal nanocrystals with prospective applications ranging from nonlinear photonic nanodevices to biospectroscopy and photocatalysis.
