Bimetallic Sulfide SnS2/FeS2 Nanosheets as High-Performance Anode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Synergistically Coupling Atomic-Level Defect-Manipulation and Nanoscopic-Level Interfacial Engineering Enables Fast and Durable Sodium Storage

Through inducing interlayer anionic ligands and functionally modifying conductive carbon-skeleton on the transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) parent to achieve atomic-level defect-manipulation and nanoscopic-level architecture design is of great significance, which can broaden interlayer distance, optimize electronic structure, and mitigate structural deformation to endow high-efficiency battery performance of TMCs. Herein, an intriguing 3D biconcave hollow-tyre-like anode constituted by carbon-packaged defective-rich SnSSe nanosheet grafting onto Aspergillus niger spores-derived hollow-carbon (ANDC@SnSSe@C) is reported. Systematically experimental investigations and theoretical analyses forcefully demonstrate the existence of anion Se ligand and outer-carbon all-around encapsulation on the ANDC@SnSSe@C can effectively yield abundant structural defects and Na+-reactivity sites, accelerate rapid ion migration, widen interlayer spacing, as well as relieve volume expansion, thus further resolving the critical issues throughout the charge-discharge processes. As anticipated, as-fabricated ANDC@SnSSe@C anode contributes extraordinary reversible capacity, wonderful cyclic lifespan with 83.4% capacity retention over 2000 cycles at 20.0 A g-1, and exceptional rate capability. A series of correlated kinetic investigations and ex situ characterizations deeply reveal the underlying springheads for the ion-transport kinetics, as well as synthetically elucidate phase-transformation mechanism of the ANDC@SnSSe@C. Furthermore, the ANDC@SnSSe@C-based sodium ion full cell and hybrid capacitor offer high-capacity contribution and remarkable energy-density output, indicative of its great practicability.

Amorphous MoS3-modified porous Co4S3-embedded N,S co-doped carbon polyhedron as new high-capacity and high-rate anode materials for sodium-ion half/full cells

In this study, amorphous MoS3-modified porous Co4S3-embedded N,S co-doped carbon polyhedron (Co4S3@NSC/MoS3) was rationally prepared via a multi-step method. One-dimensional linear-like MoS3 with a high specific capacity of 894 mAh g-1 and abundant active sites compensated for the low capacity of Co4S3, thus enhancing the sodium ion storage capacity of the entire electrode. Moreover, three-dimensional N,S co-doped carbon networks (NSC) significantly inhibited large volumetric fluctuations in Co4S3 and MoS3, thereby sustaining the structural stability and enhancing the electron transfer efficiency. As a new anode material for sodium-ion half batteries, the constructed Co4S3@NSC/MoS3 with rapid Na+ diffusion and charge transfer kinetics demonstrated better sodium storage properties than Co4S3@NSC. At a rate of 0.5 A g-1 over 100 cycles, the reversible specific capacity of Co4S3@NSC/MoS3 reached 594 mAh g-1. Even when cycled at a rate of 2 A g-1 for 600 cycles, the charge capacity was stable at 435 mAh g-1. The rate performance of Co4S3@NSC/MoS3 was also found to be remarkable; when the rate increased to 10 A g-1, the average capacity was retained at 382 mAh g-1. Apart from half cells, reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-modified Na3V2(PO4)3 composite (Na3V2(PO4)3@rGO) was used as the cathode material to match with Co4S3@NSC/MoS3. The assembled full batteries were analyzed and their electrochemical properties were discussed. They also exhibited outstanding rate capability and high-rate long-life cyclic property. Even at 1 A g-1 over 500 cycles, the discharge capacity was stably maintained at 246 mAh g-1. The outstanding sodium storage properties of Co4S3@NSC/MoS3 mainly depended on the cooperative effects of MoS3 and Co4S3@NSC, indicating the potential application of Co4S3@NSC/MoS3 in energy storage fields.

Transition metal chalcogenides for next-generation energy storage

Transition-metal chalcogenide nanostructures provide a unique material platform to engineer next-generation energy storage devices such as lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and potassium-ion batteries and flexible supercapacitors. The transition-metal chalcogenide nanocrystals and thin films have enhanced electroactive sites for redox reactions and hierarchical flexibility of structure and electronic properties in the multinary compositions. They also consist of more earth-abundant elements. These properties make them attractive and more viable new electrode materials for energy storage devices compared to the traditional materials. This review highlights the recent advances in chalcogenide-based electrodes for batteries and flexible supercapacitors. The viability and structure-property relation of these materials are explored. The use of various chalcogenide nanocrystals supported on carbonaceous substrates, two-dimensional transition metal chalcogenides, and novel MXene-based chalcogenide heterostructures as electrode materials to improve the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries is discussed. The sodium-ion and potassium-ion batteries offer a more viable alternative to lithium-ion technology as they consist of readily available source materials. Application of various transition metal chalcogenides such as MoS2, MoSe2, VS2, and SnSx, composite materials, and heterojunction bimetallic nanosheets composed of multi-metals as electrodes to enhance the long-term cycling stability, rate capability, and structural strength to counteract the large volume expansion during the ion intercalation/deintercalation processes is highlighted. The promising performances of layered chalcogenides and various chalcogenide nanowire compositions as electrodes for flexible supercapacitors are also discussed in detail. The review also details the progress made in new chalcogenide nanostructures and layered mesostructures for energy storage applications.

Unlocking High Capacity and Fast Na+ Diffusion of Hx CrS2 by Proton-Exchange Pretreatment

This study presents a new material, "H_x CrS₂ " (denotes approximate composition) formed by proton-exchange of NaCrS₂ which has a measured capacity of 728 mAh g^-1 with significant improvements to capacity retention, sustaining over 700 mAh g^-1 during cycling experiments. This is the highest reported capacity for a transition metal sulfide electrode and outperforms the most promising proposed sodium anodes to date. H_x CrS₂ exhibits a biphasic structure featuring alternating crystalline and amorphous lamella on the scale of a few nanometers. This unique structural motif enables reversible access to Cr redox in the material resulting in higher capacities than seen in the parent structure which features only S redox. Pretreatment by proton-exchange offers a route to materials such as H_x CrS₂ which provide fast diffusion and high capacities for sodium-ion batteries.

Desulfurization-Induced Formation of Amorphized Substoichiometric Tin Sulfide for Super High-Rate Capacity and Degradation-Free Cycling of Na Ion Storage

This work reports an amorphization and partial desulfurization method to improve the performance of sulfide-based materials for Na⁺ storage. Specifically, the polypyrrole derived carbon coated amorphous substoichiometric tin sulfide supported on aminated carbon nanotubes (PPY-C@SnS_x /ACNTs) with amorphized and substoichiometric tin sulfide (SnS_x ) is synthesized by simply thermal annealing the PPY-C@SnS₂ /ACNTs. The PPY-C@SnS_x /ACNTs shows stable reversible capacities of 410.2 mAh g^-1 for Na⁺ storage at 0.1 A g^-1 and excellent rate capacities of 270.2, 235.5, 217.4, and 210.0 mAh g^-1 at 5.0, 10.0, 20.0, and 30.0 A g^-1 , respectively. Nearly zero drops on the reversible capacities can be observed when it is sodiated/desodiated at 2.0, 5.0, and 10.0 A g^-1 for up to 1000, 6500, 8000 cycles, respectively. Its outstanding rate capacities and degradation-free cycling stabilities mainly arise from the amorphized and substoichiometric structure of SnS_x , which improve the reversible capacities and Na⁺ diffusivities of the PPY-C@SnS_x /ACNTs. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the partial desulfurization can improve the electric conductivity and promote the sodiation/desodiation of SnS_x . It explains why the PPY-C@SnS_x /ACNTs can exhibit high performance for Na⁺ storage well.

Recent Advancements in Chalcogenides for Electrochemical Energy Storage Applications

Energy storage has become increasingly important as a study area in recent decades. A growing number of academics are focusing their attention on developing and researching innovative materials for use in energy storage systems to promote sustainable development goals. This is due to the finite supply of traditional energy sources, such as oil, coal, and natural gas, and escalating regional tensions. Because of these issues, sustainable renewable energy sources have been touted as an alternative to nonrenewable fuels. Deployment of renewable energy sources requires efficient and reliable energy storage devices due to their intermittent nature. High-performance electrochemical energy storage technologies with high power and energy densities are heralded to be the next-generation storage devices. Transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) have sparked interest among electrode materials because of their intriguing electrochemical properties. Researchers have revealed a variety of modifications to improve their electrochemical performance in energy storage. However, a stronger link between the type of change and the resulting electrochemical performance is still desired. This review examines the synthesis of chalcogenides for electrochemical energy storage devices, their limitations, and the importance of the modification method, followed by a detailed discussion of several modification procedures and how they have helped to improve their electrochemical performance. We also discussed chalcogenides and their composites in batteries and supercapacitors applications. Furthermore, this review discusses the subject’s current challenges as well as potential future opportunities.

A novel interlayer-expanded tin disulfide/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite as anode material for high-performance sodium-ion batteries

As a kind of negative electrode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), tin-based active compounds have attracted numerous research efforts in recent years due to relatively high theoretical capacity. However, sluggish reaction kinetics for large-radius sodium ions hinders the practical application of layered tin-based anodes such as tin disulfide (SnS₂) in SIBs. In this study, polyethylene glycol (PEG) is introduced as an intercalant and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is utilized as the substrate to prepare a novel PEG-SnS₂/rGO composite with expanded layer spacing (0.921 nm) through a facile hydrothermal process. SnS₂ flakes in a size range of 50-100 nm are uniformly grown on the graphene sheet, the CS covalent bonding demonstrates a tight connection between the active SnS₂ particles and the graphene skeleton, which is conductive to convenient charge transfer during the electrochemical process. Owing to the significantly improved sodium ions transport kinetics and fast electronic conductive network, the PEG-SnS₂/rGO composite presents a high capacitance contribution of 90.69% at a scan rate of 0.6 mV s^-1. It delivers a high reversible capacity of 960.6 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1, good cycling performance with 770 mAh g^-1 remained after 100 charge/discharge cycles, and excellent rate capability with an ultrahigh capacity of 720 mAh g^-1 at 5 A g^-1. This work provides new insights into the design of a kinetically favorable anode material for SIBs.

First-principles study of borophene/phosphorene heterojunction as anode material for lithium-ion batteries

It is urgent to explore high-capacity and efficient anode materials for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. For borophene and phosphorene, two configurations are considered to form a heterojunction: twist angles of 0° (I) and 90° (II). There is a less degree of mismatch and larger formation energy in the formation of a B/P heterojunction, implying that borophene and phosphorene form the stable heterojunction. The heterojunctions of these two configurations demonstrate good conductivity, and the electrons near the Fermi level are mainly provided by borophene. Very importantly, the low energy barrier for interlayer migration of Li is observed in configuration I (0.14eV) and II (0.06 eV), and the migration of Li on the borophene and phosphorene side of the heterojunction still maintains its original energy barrier in bare monolayer. Moreover, the two configurations show the theoretical capacity as high as 738.69 and 721.86 mA h g^-1, respectively, which is comparable to bare phosphorene. Furthermore, compared with bare phosphorene, the average voltage is greatly reduced after the formation of heterojunction. Hence, the overall electrochemical properties of the B/P heterojunction have been enhanced by combining the advantages of the individual phosphorene and borophene monolayers, which guarantees the B/P heterojunction as a good candidate for the anode material used in Li-ion batteries.
