Double-Ligand Strategy to Construct an Inhibitor-Loaded Zn-MOF and Its Corrosion Protection Ability for Aluminum Alloy 2A12

Microfluidic Continuous Synthesis of Size- and Facet-Controlled Porous Bi2O3 Nanospheres for Efficient CO2 to Formate Catalysis

Bismuth-based catalysts are effective in converting carbon dioxide into formate via electrocatalysis. Precise control of the morphology, size, and facets of bismuth-based catalysts is crucial for achieving high selectivity and activity. In this work, an efficient, large-scale continuous production strategy is developed for achieving a porous nanospheres Bi2O3-FDCA material. First-principles simulations conducted in advance indicate that the Bi2O3 (111)/(200) facets help reduce the overpotential for formate production in electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (ECO2RR). Subsequently, using microfluidic technology and molecular control to precisely adjust the amount of 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid, nanomaterials rich in (111)/(200) facets are successfully synthesized. Additionally, the morphology of the porous nanospheres significantly increases the adsorption capacity and active sites for carbon dioxide. These synergistic effects allow the porous Bi2O3-FDCA nanospheres to stably operate for 90 h in a flow cell at a current density of ≈250 mA cm- 2, with an average Faradaic efficiency for formate exceeding 90%. The approach of theoretically guided microfluidic technology for the large-scale synthesis of finely structured, efficient bismuth-based materials for ECO2RR may provide valuable references for the chemical engineering of intelligent nanocatalysts.

An Inhibitor-Loaded LDH- and MOF-Based Bilayer Hybrid System for Active Corrosion Protection of Aluminum Alloys

A novel inhibitor-loaded bilayer hybrid system based on the LDH inner layer and MOF outer layer is designed on an aluminum alloy 2A12 surface to improve corrosion performance. The hybrid film system covers the inherent cavities and intercrystalline defects of the LDH film using the affinity between the LDH and the MOF compounds. The results demonstrate that the LDH-inhI precursor film is entirely covered by new Zn-based MOF microrods. The LDH-inhI precursor film is partially dissolved and recrystallized in favor of MOF crystal growth to strengthen the binding adhesion between LDH and MOF films. The LDH-inhI/MOF-inhII bilayer film shows significantly enhanced corrosion resistance through the synergistic action of LDH and MOF nanocontainers doped with different corrosion inhibitors (vanadates, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid, and benzotriazoles). Due to the multiple loadings of the MOF film and the sustained-release of the LDH film, this method provides an effective approach to developing new anticorrosion systems and enhancing both the barrier ability and active corrosion protection performance of LDH-based conversion treatments.

Engineering Zinc-Organic Frameworks-Based Artificial Carbonic Anhydrase with Ultrafast Biomimetic Centers for Efficient Hydration Reactions

Constructing effective and robust biocatalysts with carbonic anhydrase (CA)-mimetic activities offers an alternative and promising pathway for diverse CO2-related catalytic applications. However, there is very limited success has been achieved in controllably synthesizing CA-mimetic biocatalysts. Here, inspired by the 3D coordination environments of CAs, this study reports on the design of an ultrafast ZnN3-OH2 center via tuning the 3D coordination structures and mesoporous defects in a zinc-dipyrazolate framework to serve as new, efficient, and robust CA-mimetic biocatalysts (CABs) to catalyze the hydration reactions. Owing to the structural advantages and high similarity with the active center of natural CAs, the double-walled CAB with mesoporous defects displays superior CA-like reaction kinetics in p-NPA hydrolysis (V0 = 445.16 nM s-1, Vmax = 3.83 µM s-1, turnover number: 5.97 × 10-3 s-1), which surpasses the by-far-reported metal-organic frameworks-based biocatalysts. This work offers essential guidance in tuning 3D coordination environments in artificial enzymes and proposes a new strategy to create high-performance CA-mimetic biocatalysts for broad applications, such as CO2 hydration/capture, CO2 sensing, and abundant hydrolytic reactions.

Laser-Driven Rapid Synthesis of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Investigation of UV-NIR Optical Absorption, Luminescence, Photocatalytic Degradation, and Gas and Ion Adsorption Properties

In this study, we designed a platform based on a laser-driven approach for fast, efficient, and controllable MOF synthesis. The laser irradiation method was performed for the first time to synthesize Zn-based MOFs in record production time (approximately one hour) compared to all known MOF production methods with comparable morphology. In addition to well-known structural properties, we revealed that the obtained ZnMOFs have a novel optical response, including photoluminescence behavior in the visible range with nanosecond relaxation time, which is also supported by first-principles calculations. Additionally, photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue with ZnMOF was achieved, degrading the 10 ppm methylene blue (MB) solution 83% during 1 min of irradiation time. The application of laser technology can inspire the development of a novel and competent platform for a fast MOF fabrication process and extend the possible applications of MOFs to miniaturized optoelectronic and photonic devices.

Advanced materials for smart protective coatings: Unleashing the potential of metal/covalent organic frameworks, 2D nanomaterials and carbonaceous structures

The detrimental impact of corrosion on metallic materials remains a pressing concern across industries. Recently, intelligent anti-corrosive coatings for safeguarding metal infrastructures have garnered significant interest. These coatings are equipped with micro/nano carriers that store corrosion inhibitors and release them when triggered by external stimuli. These advanced coatings have the capability to elevate the electrochemical impedance values of steel by 2-3 orders of magnitude compared to the blank coating. However, achieving intelligent, durable, and reliable anti-corrosive coatings requires careful consideration in the design of these micro/nano carriers. This review paper primarily focuses on investigating the corrosion inhibition mechanism of various nano/micro carriers/barriers and identifying the challenges associated with using them for achieving desired properties in anti-corrosive coatings. Furthermore, the fundamental aspects required for nano/micro carriers, including compatibility with the coating matrix, high specific surface area, stability in different environments, stimuli-responsive behavior, and facile synthesis were investigated. To achieve this aim, we explored the properties of micro/nanocarriers based on oxide nanoparticles, carbonaceous and two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials. Finally, we reviewed recent literature on the application of state-of the art nanocarriers based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent-organic frameworks (COFs). We believe that the outcomes of this review paper offer valuable insights for researchers in selecting appropriate materials that can effectively enhance the corrosion resistance of coatings.

Co-based metal-organic frameworks synthesized from poly(ethylene terephthalate) waste plastics for rapid detection of p-phenylenediamine

The environmental issues and health problems of waste plastics have attracted remarkable attention. It is quite important to convert waste plastics into high value-added electrochemical materials. Herein, four kinds of Co-based metal-organic frameworks (CoMOFs) were synthesized from poly(ethylene terephthalate) plastic, and their electrochemical applications were examined. A mixture of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and H2O was used as the solvent, and hydrothermal reaction was employed. It is found that the surface area and porous structure of CoMOFs are closely related to the volume ratio of DMF/H2O. As a result, the prepared CoMOFs exhibit different catalytic enhancement activities toward the oxidation of p-phenylenediamine (PPD). Based on the solvent-controlled sensing performance of CoMOFs, a highly sensitive and rapid detection method has been developed for PPD, with a linear range from 0.05 to 8.0 μM. The detection limit was 45 nM, and the practical application in hair dye samples was successfully demonstrated.

Controlled Delivery of 2-Mercapto 1-Methyl Imidazole by Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient Inhibition of Copper Corrosion in NaCl Solution

In this paper, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 was modified by N-(3-aminopropyl)-imidazole to obtain a novel MOF called AMOF. Subsequently, AMOF served as a carrier for the delivery of 2-mercapto-1-methyl imidazole (MMI) to inhibit the corrosion of Cu. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were applied to characterize the morphologies and structures of AMOF and AMOF@MMI. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis were adopted to value the capacity of the load and release of the AMOF, respectively. The mass ratio of loaded MMI molecules was 18.15%. In addition, the inhibition behavior of AMOF@MMI for Cu was evaluated by polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results indicated that the AMOF loaded MMI successfully, and the released MMI could adsorb on the Cu surface and inhibit the Cu corrosion. The inhibition efficiency could reach 88.2%. The binding and interaction energies between the AMOF surface and the MMI were -16.41 kJ/mol and -20.27 kJ/mol.

LDH-Based "Smart" Films for Corrosion Sensing and Protection

In a "smart" corrosion-protective coating system, both the active anti-corrosion and the early corrosion detection of underlying metals are highly required. It is practical significant to develop materials that possess self-detecting of the early local corrosion and self-healing of coating defects simultaneously. The organic compound 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) is an effective inhibitor and a fluorescent sensor probe for corrosion of aluminum alloy. Therefore, a layer double hydroxide (LDH) nanocontainer film loaded with the 8HQ was developed for the active corrosion protection purpose of aluminum alloy AA2024. In corrosive environments, the 8HQ are released from LDH film to inhibit the corrosion process, leading to the loss of the complexation with Al³⁺ ions in LDH laminates, thus turning off fluorescence. Results show that the LDH film loaded with 8HQ composites can improve the anti-corrosion performance of the film by releasing corrosion inhibitors on demand. Simultaneously, due to the complexation of 8HQ and Al³⁺ ions, the LDH film is fluorescent at the initial stage under ultraviolet light, and then becomes non-fluorescent at the corrosion sites, indicating the corrosion evolution process of the coating. The 8HQ-loaded LDH film with self-healing and self-detecting dual functions provides promising opportunities for the effective corrosion protection of aluminum alloy due to its "smart" and multifunctional properties.

A Pitaya-Inspired Modular Cylindrical MOF-Based Capsule Design for Pesticide Signal Probes

Excessive use of pesticides has brought about serious environmental risks worldwide that pose significant harm for human health. Herein, a series of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based gel capsules with a pitaya-like core-shell structure are constructed through a green polymerization strategy for pesticide detection and removal, namely ZIF-8/M-dbia/SA (M = Zn, Cd). Significantly, the ZIF-8/Zn-dbia/SA capsule exhibits sensitive detection of alachlor, a representative pre-emergence acetanilide pesticide, with a satisfactory detection limit of 0.23 μM. In addition, the MOF-based gel capsules can be extended to a universal visual platform for the noninvasive detection of pesticide residues with various MOFs, such as Eu-MOF, Tb-MOF, and Cu-MOF, and participating dye. Similar to pitaya, the ordered porous structure of MOF in ZIF-8/Zn-dbia/SA capsules offers cavity and open sites for removing pesticide from water with the maximum adsorption amount q_max of 61.1 mg·g^-1 toward alachlor in a Langmuir model. Thereby, this work presents the universality of gel capsule self-assembly technologies, including the well-preserved visible fluorescence area and porosity of the different structurally diverse MOFs, offering an ideal strategy for water decontamination and food safety control fields.

Two Steady-State Adsorption Modes of Phosphonic Acids on Aluminum Surfaces

The phosphonic acid (PA) surface treatment on various metal substrates is of high industrial relevance, and the PA molecular structure significantly affects its quality. In this work, systematic variation of the PA molecular steric and electron environment helps discern two steady-state adsorption modes on an aluminum surface. The PA molecular structure was varied systematically, which included inorganic phosphorus acid, alkyl phosphonic acids, and phenyl phosphonic acids. To explore their in situ dynamics of adsorption/desorption on the electrochemically unstable aluminum, techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry were employed. A range of different types of interfacial layers are formed on the aluminum surface, namely, from the dissolution-limiting physisorbed layer to a quasi-inhibiting chemisorbed layer on the aluminum surface in acidic (pH ≈ 2.2) solution. Presented findings establish the dynamic steady-state nature of this type of interface. They reveal fundamental relationships among adsorbent steric or electronic effects, the steady-state interface morphology, and the steady-state aluminum dissolution rate. The study brings also a more differentiated molecular structure-related description of the aluminum dissolution inhibition of PAs and relates it to molecular density functional theory calculations.

Size- and shape-dependent cytotoxicity of nano-sized Zr-based porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks to macrophages

The wide utilization of nano-sized metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs) leads to inevitable health risks to humans. Previous studies on health risks of NMOFs mainly focus on the cytotoxic tests of typical NMOFs，but lack sufficient studies on the effects of physiochemical characteristics of NMOFs on the cytotoxicity and the related mechanisms. Here, four kinds of Zr-based porphyrinic NMOFs (PCNs), including spherical 30, 90, and 180 nm PCN-224 and rod-like 90 nm PCN-222, were taken as a proof of the concept to investigate the effects of the size and shape of NMOFs on the cytotoxicity and related mechanisms to macrophages. The 30 nm spherical PCN-224 induced significant rupture of cell membrane and dissolved in lysosome, leading to the most significant cell necrosis among the studied other nano-sized PCNs. However, other studied PCNs showed insignificant membrane rupture and their dissolution in lysosome. Furthermore, the 90 nm-sized PCN-224 led to much more significant cell necrosis by inducing lysosome damage and inhibiting of autophagy flux than the rod-like 90 nm PCN-222. These findings reveal the size- and shape-dependent cytotoxicity of PCNs and the related mechanisms and are helpful to the assessment of the potential health risks of NMOFs and the safe application of NMOFs.
