Performance of Quaternized Polybenzimidazole-Cross-Linked Poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) Membranes in HT-PEMFCs

Introduction of polymeric ionic liquids containing quaternary ammonium groups to construct high-temperature proton exchange membranes with high proton conductivity and stability

A series of membrane materials suitable for high-temperature proton exchange membranes (HT-PEM) were successfully prepared by introducing polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) containing quaternary ammonium groups into ether-bonded polybenzimidazole (OPBI). The structure of the cross-linked membrane has a strong interaction with phosphoric acid (PA), which enhances proton transport and PA retention. To ensure better overall performance of the cross-linked membrane, the optimal PIL content is 30 wt% (OPBI-PIL-30 %). The PA uptake of OPBI-PIL-30 % membrane was 323.24 %, and the proton conductivity at 180 ℃ was 113.94 mS cm-1, which was much higher than that of OPBI membrane. It is noteworthy that the PA retention of OPBI-PIL-30 % membrane could reach 71.38 % after 240 h of testing under the harsh environment of 80 ℃/40 % RH. The membrane showed better acid retention capacity of 86.89 % at 160 ℃ under anhydrous environment. The OPBI-PIL-20 % membrane achieved the maximum power density of 436.19 mW cm-2, attributed to its favorable mechanical characteristics and proton conductivity. By these excellent properties, it is shown that OPBI-PIL-X membranes containing quaternary ammonium groups have the potential to be applied in high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs).

Aryl ether-free polymer electrolytes for electrochemical and energy devices

Anion exchange polymers (AEPs) play a crucial role in green hydrogen production through anion exchange membrane water electrolysis. The chemical stability of AEPs is paramount for stable system operation in electrolysers and other electrochemical devices. Given the instability of aryl ether-containing AEPs under high pH conditions, recent research has focused on quaternized aryl ether-free variants. The primary goal of this review is to provide a greater depth of knowledge on the synthesis of aryl ether-free AEPs targeted for electrochemical devices. Synthetic pathways that yield polyaromatic AEPs include acid-catalysed polyhydroxyalkylation, metal-promoted coupling reactions, ionene synthesis via nucleophilic substitution, alkylation of polybenzimidazole, and Diels-Alder polymerization. Polyolefinic AEPs are prepared through addition polymerization, ring-opening metathesis, radiation grafting reactions, and anionic polymerization. Discussions cover structure-property-performance relationships of AEPs in fuel cells, redox flow batteries, and water and CO2 electrolysers, along with the current status of scale-up synthesis and commercialization.

Enhancing Performance and Stability of High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membranes through Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Incorporation into Self-Cross-Linked Fluorenone-Containing Polybenzimidazole

Addressing critical challenges in enhancing the oxidative stability and proton conductivity of high-temperature proton exchange membranes (HT-PEMs) is pivotal for their commercial viability. This study uncovers the significant capacity of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) to absorb a substantial amount of phosphoric acid (PA). The investigation focuses on incorporating long-range ordered hollow MWNTs into self-cross-linked fluorenone-containing polybenzimidazole (FPBI) membranes. The absorbed PA within MWNTs and FPBI forms dense PA networks within the membrane, effectively enhancing the proton conductivity. Moreover, the exceptional inertness of MWNTs plays a vital role in reinforcing the oxidation resistance of the composite membranes. The proton conductivity of the 1.5% CNT-FPBI membrane is measured at 0.0817 S cm-1 at 160 °C. Under anhydrous conditions at the same temperature, the power density of the 1.5% CNT-FPBI membrane reaches 831.3 mW cm-2. Notably, the power density remains stable even after 200 h of oxidation testing and 250 h of operational stability in a single cell. The achieved power density and long-term stability of the 1.5% CNT-FPBI membrane surpass the recently reported results. This study introduces a straightforward approach for the systematic design of high-performance and robust composite HT-PEMs for fuel cells.

Confined Nano-Channels Incorporated with Multi-Quaternized Cations for Highly Phosphoric Acid Retention HT-PEMs

Developing a new strategy to retain phosphoric acid (PA) to improve the performance and durability of high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) remains a challenge. Here, a strategy for ion-restricted catcher microstructure that incorporates PA-doped multi-quaternized poly(fluorene alkylene-co-biphenyl alkylene) (PFBA) bearing confined nanochannels is reported. Dynamic analysis reveals strong interaction between side chains and PA molecules, confirming that the microstructure can improve PA retention. The PFBA linked with triquaternary ammonium side chain (PFBA-tQA) shows the highest PA retention rate of 95%. Its H2/O2 fuel cell operates within 0.6% voltage decay at 160 °C/0% RH, and it also runs over 100 h at 100 °C/49% RH under external humidification. This combination of high PA retention, and chemical and dimensional stability fills a gap in the HT-PEMFC field, which requires strict moisture control at 90-120 °C to prevent acid leaching, simplifying the start-up procedure of HT-PEMFC without preheating.

Bipolar Membranes for Direct Borohydride Fuel Cells-A Review

Direct liquid fuel cells (DLFCs) operate directly on liquid fuel instead of hydrogen, as in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. DLFCs have the advantages of higher energy densities and fewer issues with the transportation and storage of their fuels compared with compressed hydrogen and are adapted to mobile applications. Among DLFCs, the direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell (DBPFC) is one of the most promising liquid fuel cell technologies. DBPFCs are fed sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as the fuel and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the oxidant. Introducing H2O2 as the oxidant brings further advantages to DBPFC regarding higher theoretical cell voltage (3.01 V) than typical direct borohydride fuel cells operating on oxygen (1.64 V). The present review examines different membrane types for use in borohydride fuel cells, particularly emphasizing the importance of using bipolar membranes (BPMs). The combination of a cation-exchange membrane (CEM) and anion-exchange membrane (AEM) in the structure of BPMs makes them ideal for DBPFCs. BPMs maintain the required pH gradient between the alkaline NaBH4 anolyte and the acidic H2O2 catholyte, efficiently preventing the crossover of the involved species. This review highlights the vast potential application of BPMs and the need for ongoing research and development in DBPFCs. This will allow for fully realizing the significance of BPMs and their potential application, as there is still not enough published research in the field.

Construction of Highly Conductive Cross-Linked Polybenzimidazole-Based Networks for High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

High-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) are of great interest to researchers in industry and academia because of their wide range of applications. This review lists some creative cross-linked polybenzimidazole-based membranes that have been prepared in recent years. Based on the investigation into their chemical structure, the properties of cross-linked polybenzimidazole-based membranes and the prospect of their future applications are discussed. The focus is on the construction of cross-linked structure of various types of polybenzimidazole-based membranes and their effect on proton conductivity. This review expresses the outlook and good expectation of the future direction of cross-linked polybenzimidazole membranes.
