Rational Control on Quantum Emitter Formation in Carbon-Doped Monolayer Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Probing Correlation of Optical Emission and Defect Sites in Hexagonal Boron Nitride by High-Resolution STEM-EELS

Optically bright emitters in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) often acting as a source of a single-photon are mostly attributed to point-defect centers, featuring localized intra-bandgap electronic states. Although vacancies, anti-sites, and impurities have been proposed as candidates, the exact physical and chemical nature of most hBN single-photon emitters (SPEs) within the visible region are still up for debate. Combining site-specific high-angle annular dark-field imaging (HAADF) with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), we resolve and identify a few carbon substitutions among neighboring hBN hexagons, all within the same sample region, from which typical defect emission is observed. Our experimental results are further supported by first-principles calculations, through which the stability and possible optical transitions of the proposed carbon-defect complex are assessed. The presented correlation between optical emission and defects provides valuable information toward the controlled creation of emitters in hBN, highlighting carbon complexes as another probable cause of its visible SPEs.

Discretized hexagonal boron nitride quantum emitters and their chemical interconversion

Quantum emitters in two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are of significant interest because of their unique photophysical properties, such as single-photon emission at room temperature, and promising applications in quantum computing and communications. The photoemission from hBN defects covers a wide range of emission energies but identifying and modulating the properties of specific emitters remain challenging due to uncontrolled formation of hBN defects. In this study, more than 2000 spectra are collected consisting of single, isolated zero-phonon lines (ZPLs) between 1.59 and 2.25 eV from diverse sample types. Most of ZPLs are organized into seven discretized emission energies. All emitters exhibit a range of lifetimes from 1 to 6 ns, and phonon sidebands offset by the dominant lattice phonon in hBN near 1370 cm^-1. Two chemical processing schemes are developed based on water and boric acid etching that generate or preferentially interconvert specific emitters, respectively. The identification and chemical interconversion of these discretized emitters should significantly advance the understanding of solid-state chemistry and photophysics of hBN quantum emission.

Strategies for Controlled Growth of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides by Chemical Vapor Deposition for Integrated Electronics

In recent years, transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-based electronics have experienced a prosperous stage of development, and some considerable applications include field-effect transistors, photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD), a typical bottom-up approach for preparing 2D materials, is widely used to synthesize large-area 2D TMD films and is a promising method for mass production to implement them for practical applications. In this review, we investigate recent progress in controlled CVD growth of 2D TMDs, aiming for controlled nucleation and orientation, using various CVD strategies such as choice of precursors or substrates, process optimization, and system engineering. We then survey different patterning methods, such as surface patterning, metal precursor patterning, and postgrowth sulfurization/selenization/tellurization, to mass produce heterostructures for device applications. With these strategies, various well-designed architectures, such as wafer-scale single crystals, vertical and lateral heterostructures, patterned structures, and arrays, are achieved. In addition, we further discuss various electronics made from CVD-grown TMDs to demonstrate the diverse application scenarios. Finally, perspectives regarding the current challenges of controlled CVD growth of 2D TMDs are also suggested.
