Scalable Synthesis of Pore-Rich Si/C@C Core-Shell-Structured Microspheres for Practical Long-Life Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

Tailored Yolk-Shell Design to Silicon Microparticles via Scalable and Template-Free Synthesis for Superior Lithium Storage

Micrometer-sized Si particles are beneficial to practical lithium-ion batteries in regard to low cost and high volumetric energy density in comparison with nanostructured Si anodes. However, both the issues of electrical contact loss and overgrowth of solid electrolyte interface for microscale Si induced by colossal volume change still remain to be addressed. Herein, a scalable and template-free method is introduced to fabricate yolk-shell structured Si anode from commercially available Si microparticles. The void is created via a one-step alkali etching process with the remaining silicon core as the yolk, and a double-walled shell is formed from simultaneous in situ growth of the conformal native oxide layer and subsequent carbon coating. In this configuration, the well-defined void spaces allow the Si core to expand without compromising structural integrity, while the double-walled shell acts as a static capsule to confine silicon fragments despite likely particle fracture. Therefore, electrical connectivity is maintained on both the particle and electrode level during deep galvanostatic cycling, and the solid-electrolyte interface is stabilized on the shell surface. Owing to the benefits of tailored design, excellent cycling stability (capacity retention of 95% after 100 cycles) and high coulombic efficiency (99.5%) are realized in a practical full-cell demonstration.

Si/Graphite@C Composite Fabricated by Electrostatic Self-Assembly and Following Thermal Treatment as an Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Battery

Commercial graphite anode has advantages such as low potential platform, high electronic conductivity, and abundant reserves. However, its theoretical capacity is only 372 mA h g-1. High-energy lithium-ion batteries have been a research hotspot. The Si anode has an extremely high specific capacity, but its application is hindered by defects such as large volume changes, poor electronic conductivity, and a small lithium-ion diffusion coefficient. Here, the Si/thermally reduced graphite oxide@carbon (Si/RGtO@C) composite was fabricated by electrostatic self-assembly followed by thermal treatment. The RGtO synergistic carbon coating layer can effectively compensate for the low electronic conductivity and buffer the volume expansion effect of the Si nanoparticles during charge/discharge cycles. The Si/RGtO@C anode demonstrated a significantly increased capacity compared to the RGtO. After 300 cycles, Si/RGtO@C kept a discharged capacity of 367.6 mA h g-1 at a high current density of 1.0 A g-1. The Si/RGtO@C anode shows an application potential for commercial high-energy lithium-ion batteries.

Fluorine-ion-regulated yolk-shell carbon-silicon anode material for high performance lithium ion batteries

Silicon is considered as the next-generation anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity and abundant crustal abundance. However, its poor electrical conductivity results in slow diffusion of lithium ions during battery operation. Simultaneously, the alloying process of silicon undergoes a 300 % volume change, leading to structural fractures in silicon during the cycling process. As a result, it loses contact with the current collector, continuously exposing active sites, and forming a sustained solid electrolyte interface (SEI) membrane. This paper presents the design of a fluorine-ion-regulated yolk-shell carbon-silicon anode material, highlighting the following advantages: (a) Alleviating volume changes through the design of a yolk-shell structure, thereby maintaining material structural integrity during cycling. (b) Carbon shell prevents silicon from coming into contact with the electrolyte, simultaneously improving silicon's electrical conductivity and increasing ion/electron conductivity. (c) Utilizing fluorine-ion interface modification to obtain an SEI membrane rich in fluorine components (such as LiF), thereby enhancing its long cycling performance. The F-Si@Void@C exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance, with a reversible capacity of 1166 mAh/g after 900 cycles at a current density of 0.5 A/g.

Recent Development on Transition Metal Oxides-Based Core-Shell Structures for Boosted Energy Density Supercapacitors

In recent years, nanomaterials exploration and synthesis have played a crucial role in advancing energy storage research, particularly in supercapacitor development. Researchers have diversified materials, including metal oxides, chalcogenides, and composites, as well as carbon materials, to enhance energy and power density. Balancing energy density with electrochemical stability remains challenging, driving intensified efforts in advancing electrode materials. This review focuses on recent progress in designing and synthesizing core-shell materials tailored for supercapacitors. The core-shell architecture offers advantages such as increased surface area, redox active sites, electrical conductivity, ion diffusion kinetics, specific capacitance, and cyclability. The review explores the impact of core and shell materials, specifically transition metal oxides (TMOs), on supercapacitor electrochemical behavior. Metal oxide choices, such as cobalt oxide as a preferred core and manganese oxide as a shell, are discussed. The review also highlights characterization techniques for assessing structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of core-shell materials. Overall, it provides a comprehensive overview of ongoing TMOs-based core-shell material research for supercapacitors, showcasing their potential to enhance energy storage for applications ranging from gadgets to electric vehicles. The review outlines existing challenges and future opportunities in evolving TMOs-based core-shell materials for supercapacitor advancements, holding promise for high-efficiency energy storage devices.

Multifunctional Cross-Linking Composite Binder Enables the Stable Performance of Si-Based Anodes for High-Energy-Density Lithium-Ion Batteries

The intrinsic volumetric stress during cycling is the main obstacle for developing Si-based materials as high-energy-density lithium-ion battery anodes. Elastic binders have been demonstrated as an efficient approach to alleviate the stress of Si. Herein, we design a tough 3D hard/soft polymeric network (LPTS) using lithiated poly(acrylic acid), silk sericin, and highly branched tannic acid. Covalent cross-linking provides a robust mechanical strength to endure the large stress. The formed multiple hydrogen bonds with bonding energies between 3.46 and 25 kcal mol-1 can effectively dissipate the stress through sequential hydrogen bond disassociation. The multifunctional LPTS binder maintains the integrity of the Si-based electrodes during repeated discharging/charging. Additionally, Li+ can be transferred via a Li-conducting group (-COOLi), thereby enhancing the ionic conductivity of electrodes. Consequently, the Si/LPTS electrode exhibits an improved initial Coulombic efficiency and excellent durability over 400 cycles. Meanwhile, this binder is also suitable for Si-C anodes, enabling stable cycling at a high areal capacity >3.6 mAh cm-2 and delivering 72.2% capacity retention for the LFP||Si-C/LPTS full cell after 200 cycles. This study provides insight into developing efficient Si-based binders that are facile and low-cost for next-generation high-energy-density systems.

Achievements, challenges, and perspectives in the design of polymer binders for advanced lithium-ion batteries

Energy storage devices with high power and energy density are in demand owing to the rapidly growing population, and lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are promising rechargeable energy storage devices. However, there are many issues associated with the development of electrode materials with a high theoretical capacity, which need to be addressed before their commercialization. Extensive research has focused on the modification and structural design of electrode materials, which are usually expensive and sophisticated. Besides, polymer binders are pivotal components for maintaining the structural integrity and stability of electrodes in LIBs. Polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) is a commercial binder with superior electrochemical stability, but its poor adhesion, insufficient mechanical properties, and low electronic and ionic conductivity hinder its wide application as a high-capacity electrode material. In this review, we highlight the recent progress in developing different polymeric materials (based on natural polymers and synthetic non-conductive and electronically conductive polymers) as binders for the anodes and cathodes in LIBs. The influence of the mechanical, adhesion, and self-healing properties as well as electronic and ionic conductivity of polymers on the capacity, capacity retention, rate performance and cycling life of batteries is discussed. Firstly, we analyze the failure mechanisms of binders based on the operation principle of lithium-ion batteries, introducing two models of "interface failure" and "degradation failure". More importantly, we propose several binder parameters applicable to most lithium-ion batteries and systematically consider and summarize the relationships between the chemical structure and properties of the binder at the molecular level. Subsequently, we select silicon and sulfur active electrode materials as examples to discuss the design principles of the binder from a molecular structure point of view. Finally, we present our perspectives on the development directions of binders for next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. We hope that this review will guide researchers in the further design of novel efficient binders for lithium-ion batteries at the molecular level, especially for high energy density electrode materials.

Silver-Assisted Chemical Etching for the Fabrication of Porous Silicon N-Doped Nanohollow Carbon Spheres Composite Anodes to Enhance Electrochemical Performance

Silicon (Si) shows great potential as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, it experiences significant expansion in volume as it undergoes the charging and discharging cycles, presenting challenges for practical implementation. Nanostructured Si has emerged as a viable solution to address these challenges. However, it requires a complex preparation process and high costs. In order to explore the above problems, this study devised an innovative approach to create Si/C composite anodes: micron-porous silicon (p-Si) was synthesized at low cost at a lower silver ion concentration, and then porous silicon-coated carbon (p-Si@C) composites were prepared by compositing nanohollow carbon spheres with porous silicon, which had good electrochemical properties. The initial coulombic efficiency of the composite was 76.51%. After undergoing 250 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A·g-1, the composites exhibited a capacity of 1008.84 mAh·g-1. Even when subjected to a current density of 1 A·g-1, the composites sustained a discharge capacity of 485.93 mAh·g-1 even after completing 1000 cycles. The employment of micron-structured p-Si improves cycling stability, which is primarily due to the porous space it provides. This porous structure helps alleviate the mechanical stress caused by volume expansion and prevents Si particles from detaching from the electrodes. The increased surface area facilitates a longer pathway for lithium-ion transport, thereby encouraging a more even distribution of lithium ions and mitigating the localized expansion of Si particles during cycling. Additionally, when Si particles expand, the hollow carbon nanospheres are capable of absorbing the resulting stress, thus preventing the electrode from cracking. The as-prepared p-Si utilizing metal-assisted chemical etching holds promising prospects as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Novel binary regulated silicon-carbon materials as high-performance anodes for lithium-ion batteries

The massive volume dilation, unsteady solid electrolyte interphase, and weak conductivity about Si have failed to bring it to practical applications, although its potential capacity is up to 4200 mAh g-1. For solving these problems, novel binary regulated silicon-carbon materials (Si/BPC) were done by a sol-gel procedure combined with single carbonization. Analytical techniques were systematically utilized to examine the effects of element doping at several gradients on morphology, structure and electrochemical properties of composites, thus the optimal content was identified. Si/BPC preserves a discharge specific capacity of 1021.6 mAh g-1with a coulomb efficiency of 99.27% after 180 cycles at 1000 mA g-1, within the upgrade than single-doped and undoped. In rate test, it has a specific capacity of 1003.2 mAh g-1at a high current density of 5000 mA g-1, quickly back towards 2838.6 mAh g-1at 200 mA g-1. The inclusion of B and P elements is linked to the electrochemical characteristics. In the co-doped carbon layers, the synergistic impact of doping B and P accelerates the diffusion kinetics of lithium ions, boosts diffusion rate of Li+, offers low electrochemical impedance (45.75 Ω). This brings more defects to provide transport carriers and induces a substantial amount of electrochemically active sites, which fosters the storage of Li+, thus making silicon material electrochemically more active and potential.

Yolk shell structured YS-Si@N-doped carbon derived from covalent organic frameworks for enhanced lithium storage

Silicon (Si) has ultra-high theoretical capacity (4200 mAh g-1) and accordingly is widely studied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, its huge volume expansion during charging/discharging is a fatal challenge. The preparation of Si-based composite materials with yolk shell structure is the key to solving the Si volume expansion. Here, N-doped carbon-coated Si nanoparticles (SiNPs) nanocomposites (YS-Si@NC-60) with yolk shell structure derived from covalent organic frameworks (COFs) was prepared. N-doped carbon shells derived from COFs not only maintain the well-ordered nanosized pores of COFs, which facilitates the transport of Li+ to contact with internal SiNPs, but also provide more extra active sites for Li+ storage. Most importantly, the internal void can effectively alleviate the damage effect of SiNPs volume expansion. The obtained YS-Si@NC-60 as a LIBs anode show high cyclic stability and Li+ storage performances. At 0.1 A g-1, the capacity is 1446 mAh g-1 after 110 cycles, and initial coulomb efficiency is as high as 82.2 %. The excellent performance can be attributed to the unique yolk shell structure. This simple and template-free strategy provides a new idea for preparing Si-C nanocomposites with yolk shell structure.

Constructing LiF-Dominated Interphases with Polymer Interwoven Outer Layer Enables Long-Term Cycling of Si Anodes

Constructing a robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is extremely critical to developing high-energy-density silicon (Si)-based lithium-ion batteries. However, it is still elusive how to accurately manipulate the chemical composition and structure of the SEI layer. Herein, a LiF-dominated SEI film intertwined by a highly elastic polymer is achieved by regulating the defluorination mechanism of the fluorinated carbonate additive on the Si electrode surface. The experimental and computational results confirm that the decomposition route of trans-difluoroethylene carbonate (DFEC) molecules can be significantly altered in the presence of lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) additive. The induction of direct defluorination of DFEC step by LiDFOB, as opposed to the breaking of C-O bonds without LiDFOB addition, is crucial in ensuring the exclusive formation of LiF-dominated SEI and maintaining the cyclic structure of DFEC. The defluorinated DFEC easily polymerizes to form poly(vinylene carbonate), enhancing the elasticity of the SEI. The resulting LiF-dominated SEI film with a polymer interwoven outer layer shows enhanced ionic conductivity and mechanical stability, which can effectively accelerate electrode reaction kinetics and maintain the structural stability of the Si electrode. As a result, the Si electrode with the electrolyte containing the designed dual-additive exhibits superior cycling stability and excellent rate performance, delivering a high reversible capacity of 1487.3 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g-1.

Macroporous Directed and Interconnected Carbon Architectures Endow Amorphous Silicon Nanodots as Low-Strain and Fast-Charging Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Fabricating low-strain and fast-charging silicon-carbon composite anodes is highly desired but remains a huge challenge for lithium-ion batteries. Herein, we report a unique silicon-carbon composite fabricated by uniformly dispersing amorphous Si nanodots (SiNDs) in carbon nanospheres (SiNDs/C) that are welded on the wall of the macroporous carbon framework (MPCF) by vertical graphene (VG), labeled as MPCF@VG@SiNDs/C. The high dispersity and amorphous features of ultrasmall SiNDs (~ 0.7 nm), the flexible and directed electron/Li+ transport channels of VG, and the MPCF impart the MPCF@VG@SiNDs/C more lithium storage sites, rapid Li+ transport path, and unique low-strain property during Li+ storage. Consequently, the MPCF@VG@SiNDs/C exhibits high cycle stability (1301.4 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 1000 cycles without apparent decay) and high rate capacity (910.3 mAh g-1, 20 A g-1) in half cells based on industrial electrode standards. The assembled pouch full cell delivers a high energy density (1694.0 Wh L-1; 602.8 Wh kg-1) and an excellent fast-charging capability (498.5 Wh kg-1, charging for 16.8 min at 3 C). This study opens new possibilities for preparing advanced silicon-carbon composite anodes for practical applications.

Anisotropic thermal expansion of silicon monolayer in biphenylene network

Materials with a negative thermal expansion property are of great importance in the emerging family of two-dimensional materials. For example, mixing two materials with negative and positive coefficients of thermal expansion avoids volume changing with temperature. In this work, based on first-principles calculations and Grüneisen's theory, we investigated the thermal expansion properties of a silicon monolayer in biphenylene networks. Our results show that the thermal expansion is greatly negative and anisotropic, as the linear thermal expansion coefficient along the a-direction is significantly smaller than the one along the b-direction, even at high temperatures. At 300 K, the thermal expansion coefficients along the two lattice directions are -17.010 × 10-6 K-1 and -2.907 × 10-6 K-1, respectively. By analyzing the Grüneisen parameters and the elastic compliance, we obtained an understanding of the giant negative thermal expansion of the material. Rigid unit modes are also responsible for the negative thermal expansion behavior. Our work provides fundamental insights into the thermal expansion of silicon monolayer in biphenylene networks and should stimulate the further exploration of the possible thermoelectric and thermal management applications of the material.

Multifunctional, Hybrid Materials Design via Spray-Drying: Much more than Just Drying

Spray-drying is a popular and well-known "drying tool" for engineers. This perspective highlights that, beyond this application, spray-drying is a very interesting and powerful tool for materials chemists to enable the design of multifunctional and hybrid materials. Upon spray-drying, the confined space of a liquid droplet is narrowed down, and its ingredients are forced together upon "falling dry." As  detailed in this article, this enables the following material formation strategies either individually or even in combination: nanoparticles and/or molecules can be assembled; precipitation reactions as well as chemical syntheses can be performed; and templated materials can be designed. Beyond this, fragile moieties can be processed, or "precursor materials" be prepared. Post-treatment of spray-dried objects eventually enables the next level in the design of complex materials. Using spray-drying to design (particulate) materials comes with many advantages-but also with many challenges-all of which are outlined here. It is believed that multifunctional, hybrid materials, made via spray-drying, enable very unique property combinations that are particularly highly promising in myriad applications-of which catalysis, diagnostics, purification, storage, and information are highlighted.

A Stress Self-Adaptive Silicon/Carbon "Ordered Structures" to Suppress the Electro-Chemo-Mechanical Failure: Piezo-Electrochemistry and Piezo-Ionic Dynamics

Construction of ordered structures that respond rapidly to environmental stimuli has fascinating possibilities for utilization in energy storage, wearable electronics, and biotechnology. Silicon/carbon (Si/C) anodes with extremely high energy densities have sparked widespread interest for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), while their implementation is constrained via mechanical structure deterioration, continued growth of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI), and cycling instability. In this study, a piezoelectric Bi0.5 Na0.5 TiO3 (BNT) layer is facilely deposited onto Si/C@CNTs anodes to drive piezoelectric fields upon large volume expansion of Si/C@CNTs electrode materials, resulting in the modulation of interfacial Li+ kinetics during cycling and providing an electrochemical reaction with a mechanically robust and chemically stable substrate. In-depth investigations into theoretical computation, multi-scale in/ex situ characterizations, and finite element analysis reveal that the improved structural stability, suppressed volume variations, and controlled ion transportation are responsible for the improvement mechanism of BNT decorating. These discoveries provide insight into the surface coupling technique between mechanical and electric fields to control the interfacial Li+ kinetics behavior and improve structural stability for alloy-based anodes, which will also spark a great deal attention from researchers and technologists in multifunctional surface engineering for electrochemical systems.

Review of the Scalable Core-Shell Synthesis Methods: The Improvements of Li-Ion Battery Electrochemistry and Cycling Stability

The demand for lithium-ion batteries has significantly increased due to the increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). However, these batteries have a limited lifespan, which needs to be improved for the long-term use needs of EVs expected to be in service for 20 years or more. In addition, the capacity of lithium-ion batteries is often insufficient for long-range travel, posing challenges for EV drivers. One approach that has gained attention is using core-shell structured cathode and anode materials. That approach can provide several benefits, such as extending the battery lifespan and improving capacity performance. This paper reviews various challenges and solutions by the core-shell strategy adopted for both cathodes and anodes. The highlight is scalable synthesis techniques, including solid phase reactions like the mechanofusion process, ball-milling, and spray-drying process, which are essential for pilot plant production. Due to continuous operation with a high production rate, compatibility with inexpensive precursors, energy and cost savings, and an environmentally friendly approach that can be carried out at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperatures. Future developments in this field may focus on optimizing core-shell materials and synthesis techniques for improved Li-ion battery performance and stability.

Roll-Pressed Silicon Anodes with High Reversible Volumetric Capacity Achieved by Interfacial Stabilization and Mechanical Strengthening of a Silicon/Graphene Hybrid Assembly

Application of Si anodes is hindered by severe capacity fading due to pulverization of Si particles during the large volume changes of Si during charge/discharge and repeated formation of the solid-electrolyte interphase. To address these issues, considerable efforts have been devoted to the development of Si composites with conductive carbons (Si/C composites). However, Si/C composites with high C content inevitably show low volumetric capacity because of low electrode density. For practical applications, the volumetric capacity of a Si/C composite electrode is more important than gravimetric capacity, but volumetric capacity in pressed electrodes is rarely reported. Herein, a novel synthesis strategy is demonstrate for a compact Si nanoparticle/graphene microspherical assembly with interfacial stability and mechanical strength achieved by consecutively formed chemical bonds using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and sucrose. The unpressed electrode (density: 0.71 g cm-3 ) shows a reversible specific capacity of 1470 mAh g-1 with a high initial coulombic efficiency of 83.7% at a current density of 1 C-rate. The corresponding pressed electrode (density: 1.32 g cm-3 ) exhibits high reversible volumetric capacity of 1405 mAh cm-3 and gravimetric capacity of 1520 mAh g-1 with a high initial coulombic efficiency of 80.4% and excellent cycling stability of 83% over 100 cycles at 1 C-rate.

In Situ N, O-Dually Doped Nanoporous Biochar Derived from Waste Eutrophic Spirulina for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Sustainable and high-performance energy storage materials are crucial to address global energy and environmental challenges. In this study, Spirulina platensis was used as the carbon and nitrogen source, and Spirulina-based nanoporous biochar (SNPB) was synthesized through chemical activation using KOH as the activating agent in N2 atmosphere. SNPB-800-4 was characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption and XPS, showing a high specific surface area (2923.7 m2 g-1) and abundant heteroatomic oxygen (13.78%) and nitrogen (2.55%). SNPB-800-4 demonstrated an exceptional capacitance of 348 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 and a remarkable capacitance retention of 94.14% after 10,000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g-1 in 6 M KOH. Notably, symmetric supercapacitors SNPB-800-4//SNPB-800-4 achieved the maximum energy and power densities of 17.99 Wh kg-1 and 162.48 W kg-1, respectively, at a current density of 0.5 A g-1, and still maintained 2.66 Wh kg-1 when the power density was increased to 9685.08 W kg-1 at a current density of 30 A g-1. This work provides an easily scalable and straightforward way to convert waste algae biomass into in situ N, O-dually doped biochar for ultra-high-power supercapacitors.

High-performance Si@C anode for lithium-ion batteries enabled by a novel structuring strategy

Si anode has drawn growing attention because of its features of large specific capacity, low electrochemical potential, and high natural abundance. However, it suffers from severe electrochemical irreversibility due to its large volume change during cycling. In spite of the achievement of improved electrochemical performance after compositing with carbon materials, most of the reported Si/C composite anodes lack a simple preparation process. To obtain a promising Si-based anode material, both simple preparation process and improved performance are necessary. Herein, inspired by the structure of shock proof foam, a novel structure of Si-based composite (Si@FeNO@P), consisting of Si nanoparticles embedded within a highly graphitized Fe3C/Fe3O4 hybrid nanoparticle-interspersed foam-like porous carbon matrix, has been constructed using a simple method, consisting of simple mixing, drying, and carbonization processes. Thus, the well-designed composite structure effectively mitigates issues resulting from volumetric change of the Si during cycle and hence improves its performance significantly. The research results confirm outstanding performance of the Si@FeNO@P anode in the aspects of cycle durability, specific capacity, and rate capability, with 1116.1 (250th cycle), 858.1 (500th cycle), and 503.1 (500th cycle) mA h g-1 at 100, 1000, and 5000 mA g-1, respectively. By comparing the performance and structure of Si@FeNO@P with other control samples, it was substantiated that the outstanding performances of the Si@FeNO@P anode depend on the synergistic effects of the well-designed unique carbon matrix, conductive Fe3C, and Fe3O4-in situ derived metallic Fe nanoparticles during cycling. The outstanding electrochemical performance and simple preparation route make the Si@FeNO@P anode promising for lithium-ion battery applications. This work also gives useful insights into the development of high-performance Si-based anodes with simple practical methods.

Si@nitrogen-doped porous carbon derived from covalent organic framework for enhanced Li-storage

Due to ultra-high theoretical capacity (4200 mAh g^-1), silicon (Si) is an excellent candidate for the anode of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the application of Si is severely limited by its volume expansion of approximately 300% during the charge/discharge process. Herein, nitrogen-doped porous carbon (NC) capped nano-Si particles (Si@NC) composites with a core-shell structure were obtained by calcination of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) encapsulated nano-Si. COFs is a crystalline material with well-ordered structures, adjustable and ordered pores and abundant N atoms. After carbonization, the well-ordered pores and frameworks were kept well. Compared with other Si@NC composites, the well-ordered NC framework shell derived from COFs possesses high elasticity and well-ordered pores, which provides space for the volume expansion of nano-Si, and a channel to transfer Li⁺. The core-shell Si@NC composite exhibited good performances when applied as the anode of LIBs. At a current density of 100 mA g^-1, it exhibited a discharge-specific capacity of 1534.8 mAh g^-1 after 100 cycles with a first-coulomb efficiency of 69.7%. The combination of COFs with nano-Si is a better strategy for the preparation of anode materials of LIBs.

Hydrogen Bond-Enabled High-ICE Anode for Lithium-Ion Battery Using Carbonized Citric Acid-Coated Silicon Flake in PAA Binder

A silicon-based lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode is extensively studied because of silicon's abundance, high theoretical specific capacity (4200 mAh/g), and low operating potential versus lithium. Technical barriers to large-scale commercial applications include the low electrical conductivity and up to about 400% volume changes of silicon due to alloying with lithium. Maintaining the physical integrity of individual silicon particles and the anode structure is the top priority. We use strong hydrogen bonds between citric acid (CA) and silicon to firmly coat CA on silicon. Carbonized CA (CCA) enhances electrical conductivity of silicon. Polyacrylic acid (PAA) binder encapsulates silicon flakes by strong bonds formed by abundant COOH functional groups in PAA and on CCA. It results in excellent physical integrity of individual silicon particles and the whole anode. The silicon-based anode shows high initial coulombic efficiency, around 90%, and the capacity retention of 1479 mAh/g after 200 discharge-charge cycles at 1 A/g current. At 4 A/g, the capacity retention of 1053 mAh/g was achieved. A durable high-ICE silicon-based LIB anode capable of high discharge-charge current has been reported.

Recent Progress in Silicon-Based Materials for Performance-Enhanced Lithium-Ion Batteries

Silicon (Si) has been considered to be one of the most promising anode materials for high energy density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity, low discharge platform, abundant raw materials and environmental friendliness. However, the large volume changes, unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation during cycling and intrinsic low conductivity of Si hinder its practical applications. Various modification strategies have been widely developed to enhance the lithium storage properties of Si-based anodes, including cycling stability and rate capabilities. In this review, recent modification methods to suppress structural collapse and electric conductivity are summarized in terms of structural design, oxide complexing and Si alloys, etc. Moreover, other performance enhancement factors, such as pre-lithiation, surface engineering and binders are briefly discussed. The mechanisms behind the performance enhancement of various Si-based composites characterized by in/ex situ techniques are also reviewed. Finally, we briefly highlight the existing challenges and future development prospects of Si-based anode materials.

Integrating highly active graphite nanosheets into microspheres for enhanced lithium storage properties of silicon

Integrating silicon (Si) and graphitic carbon into micron-sized composites by spray-drying holds great potential in developing advanced anodes for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, common graphite particles as graphitic carbon are always too large in three-dimensional size, resulting in inhomogeneous hybridization with nanosized Si (NSi); in addition, the rate capability of graphite is poor owing to sluggish intercalation kinetics. Herein, we integrated graphite nanosheets (GNs) with NSi to prepare porous NSi-GN-C microspheres by spray-drying and subsequent calcination with the assistance of glucose. Two-dimensional GNs with average thickness of ∼80 nm demonstrate superior lithium storage capacity, high conductivity, and flexibility, which could improve the electronic transfer kinetics and structural stability. Moreover, the porous structure buffers the volume expansion of Si during the lithiation process. The obtained NSi-GN-C microspheres manifest excellent electrochemical performance, including high initial coulombic efficiency of 85.9%, excellent rate capability of 94.4% capacity retention after 50 repeated high-rate tests, and good cyclic performance for 500 cycles at 1.0 A g-1. Kinetic analysis and in situ impedance spectra reveal dominant pseudocapacitive behavior with rapid and stable Li+ insertion/extraction processes. Ex situ morphology characterization demonstrates the ultra-stable integrated structure of the NSi-GN-C. The highly active GN demonstrates great potential to improve the lithium storage properties of Si, which provides new opportunity for constructing high-performance anodes for LIBs.

Three-Dimensional Crosslinked PAA-TA Hybrid Binders for Long-Cycle-Life SiOx Anodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries

The large volume expansion hinders the commercial application of silicon oxide (SiO_x) anodes in lithium-ion batteries. Recent studies show that binders play a vital role in mitigating the volume change of SiO_x electrodes. Herein, we introduce the small molecule tannic acid (TA) with high branching into the linear poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) binder for SiO_x anodes. The three-dimensional (3D) crosslinked network with multiple hydrogen bonds is formed by the incorporation of abundant hydroxyl groups with unique carboxyl groups, which increases the interfacial adhesive strength with SiO_x particles. As a consequence, SiO_x electrodes based on the PAA-TA binder show an excellent cycling performance with a high specific capacity of 1025 mA h g^-1 at 500 mA g^-1 after 250 cycles. Moreover, the SiO_x||NCM811 full cell exhibits a reversible capacity of 143 mA h g^-1 corresponding to 87.4% capacity retention after 100 cycles.

Fabrication of ballpoint-ink via encapsulating inorganic pigments in microemulsion gels

The fabrication of ballpoint-ink might open up a new perspective on physico-chemical solubility thermodynamics. In this report, we present a method to encapsulate inorganic pigments, such as Fe(CNS)3 (red), Fe2Fe(CN)6 (blue), CdS (yellow), and CuS (black) into w/o microemulsion gels. The area of w/o microemulsions was first determined by titrating surfactants Tween-60 into the given composition of water and cyclohexane in the pseudo-three phase diagram. Three prosperous phase areas were successfully mapped using this method, namely: microemulsion (w/o, and o/w) or (μE), lamellar liquid crystal (Lα), and hexagonal liquid crystal (Hα), respectively. The results show that inorganic pigments were well soluble in the w/o microemulsion gel of the Tween-60/cyclohexane/water system. The highest solubility of inorganic pigments in the microemulsion gel is 3.63 ± 0.05 mg g-1 for the red pigment of Fe(CNS)3, and the lowest is 2.92 ± 0.05 mg g-1 for the yellow pigment of CdS. Hence, the solubility limit distribution for all pigments is 2.9 ± 0.05 <>3.63 ± 0.05 mg g-1. The cation and anion size strongly affected the inorganic pigments' solubility in the w/o-microemulsion system. Some quantity of the ink-made of inorganic pigments encapsulated in the microemulsion gel has been inserted into empty ballpoint sleeves as prototypes. The resulting self-made inks demonstrated that the physical appearances of the ink could mimic the factory-made inks. Nevertheless, the self-made ink should be investigated further for long lifespan use, especially for long-term stability and corrosion resistance.

Construction of a LiF-Rich and Stable SEI Film by Designing a Binary, Ion-, and Electron-Conducting Buffer Interface on the Si Surface

Stabilizing a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film on the Si surface is a prerequisite for realizing silicon (Si) anode applications. Interfacial engineering is one of the effective strategies to construct stable SEI films on Si surfaces and improve the electrochemical performance of the Si anodes. This work develops a silver (Ag)-decorated mucic acid (MA) buffer interface on the Si surface and the obtained Si@MA*Ag anode retains 1567 mAh g^-1 after 500 cycles at 2.1 A g^-1 and exhibits 1740 mAh g^-1 at 126 A g^-1, which are significantly higher than those of the bare Si anode of 247 and 145 mAh g^-1 under the same conditions, respectively. Analysis indicates that the improved electrochemical performance is because of the depressed volume effect of the Si particles and the sustained integrity of the electrode laminate during cycling, the enhanced lithium diffusion on the Si surface, and the improved electronic conductivity of the Si anode, as well as the facilitated formation of inorganic components in the SEI film.
