Abstract
Since the invention and commercialization of poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers, numerous breakthroughs in applications have been realized both in the military and aerospace industries, attributed to its superb properties. Particularly, PBO nanofibers (PNFs) not only retain the high performance of PBO fiber but also exhibit impressive nanofeatures and desirable processability, which have been extensively applied in extreme scenarios. However, no review has yet comprehensively summarized the preparation, applications, and prospective challenges of PNFs to the best of our knowledge. Herein, the two fabrication pathways to acquire PNFs from bottom-up to top-down approaches are critically overviewed; the significant advantages and the problem caused simultaneously of the protonation approach compared with other methods are revealed. Besides, the construction strategies of multidimensional PNF-based advanced composites, including 1D fiber, 2D film/nanopaper, and 3D gel, are discussed. Moreover, the outstanding mechanical, insulating, and thermal stability properties of PNFs facilitate their extensive applications in thermal protection, electrical insulation, batteries, and flexible wearable devices, which are further comprehensively introduced. Finally, the perspective and challenges of the fabrication and application of PNFs are highlighted. It demonstrates that the PNFs as one of the promising high-performance nanoscale building blocks can be fully competent using extremely harsh conditions.

Abstract
The rapid advancement of modern power equipment and high-power devices has imposed increasingly stringent demands upon the mechanical and dielectric properties of electrical insulation materials. Herein, we report a poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) composite insulating paper with excellent dielectric breakdown strength, reliable mechanical properties, and high thermal stability. Enhanced surface activity of PMIA is achieved through surface modification, facilitating the synergistic integration of modified PMIA (MPMIA), bovine serum albumin (BSA)/silica (SiO2), and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) into composite paper using dynamic covalent bonds and hydrogen bonding. The prepared MPMIA-BSA/SiO2-CNF composite paper exhibits a laminated stacked structure with high tensile strength (32.68 MPa) and strain at break (9.57%). Meanwhile, MPMIA-BSA/SiO2-CNF composites have excellent dielectric breakdown strength (24.75 kV/mm) and good temperature resistance. Therefore, the MPMIA-BSA/SiO2-CNF composite paper has a broad application prospect in the field of high-voltage and high-power electrical equipment insulation.

Abstract
Polymer nanofibers have established a robust foundation and possess immense potential in various emerging fields such as sensors and biotechnology. In this study, aqueous dispersions of aramid nanofibers (ANFs) were successfully prepared by using tannic acid (TA). Morphological analysis revealed that TA effectively prevented self-aggregation of ANFs, and preserved the nanofiber structure during TA-assisted solvent exchange. Subsequently, the ANF and TA/ANF films were fabricated using casting and vacuum-assisted filtration techniques. Notably, the tensile strength of the casting TA/ANF film reached 393.8 MPa, exhibiting a remarkable improvement of 41.3% compared to that of the pure ANF film. These exceptional mechanical properties can be attributed to the well-dispersed nanostructures, hydrogen-bonding interactions, zigzag structures, and fiber-bridging effects. Furthermore, the TA/ANF film demonstrated superior ultraviolet (UV) shielding capabilities, visible transparency properties, and excellent resistance to chemical reagents. The above-mentioned interesting findings demonstrate its potential as a nanofiber-reinforced material for poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composites.

Abstract
The flame-retardant paper has gradually evolved into a necessary material in various industries as a result of the rising importance of fire safety, energy efficiency, and environmental preservation. Traditional cellulose paper requires the addition of a large amount of flame retardants to achieve flame retardancy, which poses a serious threat to mechanical quality and the environment. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop inorganic fiber flame-retardant paper with good flexibility, high thermal stability, and inherent flame retardancy. Herein, inspired by the "brick-and-mortar" layered structure of nature nacre, we developed a layered composite paper with a unique alternating arrangement of organic-inorganic fibers by synergistically integrating environmentally sustainable basalt fiber (BF) and high-performance aramid nanofibers (ANFs) through a vacuum-assisted filtration process. The as-prepared ANFs/BF composite paper exhibited low thermal conductivity (0.024 W m-1 K-1), high tensile strength (54.22 MPa), and excellent flexibility. Thanks to its excellent thermal stability, the mechanical strength remains at a high level (92%) after heat treatment at 300 °C for 60 min. Furthermore, the peak heat release rate and smoke generation of ANFs/BF composite paper decreased by 44.6 and 95.3%, respectively. Therefore, the composite paper is promising for applications as a protective layer in flexible electronic devices, cables, and fire-retardant and high-temperature fields.

Abstract
Lignin-containing cellulose nanopapers are emerging multifunctional materials in the fields of coatings, films, and packaging. However, the forming mechanism and properties of nanopapers with various lignin content have not been thoroughly studied. In this work, a mechanically strong nanopaper was fabricated based on lignin-containing cellulose micro- and nano-hybrid fibrils (LCNFs). The influence of lignin content and fibrils morphology on the formation process of nanopapers was investigated to understand the strengthening mechanism of nanopapers. LCNFs with high lignin content provided nanopapers with intertwined micro- and nano-hybrid fibrils layers with small layer spacing, while LCNFs with low lignin content offered nanopapers interlaced nanofibrils layers with large layer spacing. Although lignin was expected to interfere with hydrogen bonds between fibrils, the uniformly distributed lignin contributed to the stress transfer between fibrils. Due to the good coordination between microfibrils, nanofibrils and lignin (as network skeleton, filler and natural binder, respectively), the well-designed LCNFs nanopapers with lignin content of 14.5 % showed excellent mechanical properties, including tensile strength (183.8 MPa), Young's modulus (5.6 GPa) and elongation (9.2 %). This work deeply reveals the relationship between lignin content, morphology and strengthening mechanism of nanopapers, and providing theoretical guidance for employing LCNFs as structural and reinforcing materials to design robust composites.

Abstract
In nature, many insects have evolved sclerotic cuticles to shelter their soft bodies, which are considered as "body armor". For beetles, the epidermis is composed of cross-linked intertwined fiber structures; such a fiber network structure could provide an anti-impact function for composites. Aramid nanofibers (ANFs) are of great interest in various applications due to their 1D nanoscale, high aspect ratio, excellent strength and modulus, and impressive chemical and thermal stability. In this paper, a kind of ANF network is prepared by a layer-by-layer assembly method. The enhancing ANF networks are developed by introducing carboxylated chitosan acting as a hydrogen-bondin donors as well as a soft interlocking agent (C-ANFs). As a result of the formation of a nanostructure and the hydrogen-bond interactions, the assembled C-ANF networks presented a high tensile strength (551.4 MPa) and toughness (4.0 MJ/m2), which is 2.41 times and 32.69 times those of neat ANF networks, respectively. The excellent mechanical properties endow C-ANF networks with distinguished anti-impact performance. The specific dissipated energy after mass normalization reaches 7.34 MJ/kg, which is significantly superior to traditional protective materials such as steel and Kevlar composites. A nonlinear spring model is also used to explain the mechanical behavior of C-ANF networks. In addition to anti-impact protection, C-ANF networks can realize more than 99% of UV irradiation absorption and have excellent thermal stability. The chemical stability of C-ANF networks make them survive in acid and alkali environments. The above characteristics show that C-ANF networks have great application value in multiscale protection scenarios under an extreme environment.

Abstract
With the rapidly increasing development of portable devices and flexible electronic devices, multifunctional composites with excellent mechanical strength, great electromagnetic interference shielding, great Joule heating performance and strong fire-resistant protective performance are noticeably required. Herein, inspired by the sandwich structure, we have designed a montmorillonite/aramid nanofibers@MXene (MMT/ANFs@MXene) nanocomposite with an alternating multilayered structure via a simple AVF process. In this nanocomposite, the ANFs/MMT (AT) layer acts as a mechanically reinforced and insulation protection layer, while the MXene layer maintains a complete conductive network. The superior alternating multilayered structure endows the nanocomposite with outstanding mechanical properties (154.66 MPa, 14.22%) and excellent EMI shielding effectiveness values (58.4 dB). In addition, the fire-resistant protective performance of the nanocomposite improves its safety and reliability, especially, the EMI shielding effectiveness is maintained at ∼34 dB after burning for 30 s. Besides, the MMT/ANFs@MXene nanocomposite shows excellent Joule heating performance with a fast thermal response, low driving voltage and long-time temperature stability, which could reach 110.2 °C at only 3 V applied voltage within 10 s. As a result, this work presents a novel strategy for constructing multifunctional composites with outstanding overall performance, which will broaden application areas and prospects in thermal management and EMI shielding in wearable products.
