Ultrathin Two-Dimensional ZnIn2S4/Nix-B Heterostructure for High-Performance Photocatalytic Fine Chemical Synthesis and H2 Generation

S-scheme homojunction of 0D cubic/2D hexagonal ZnIn2S4 for efficient photocatalytic reduction of nitroarenes

The targeted conversion of toxic nitroarenes to corresponding aminoarenes presents significant promise in simultaneously addressing environmental pollution concerns and producing value-added fine chemicals. In this study, we synthesize a 0D/2D ZnIn2S4 homojunction (CH-ZnIn2S4) by in situ growth of cubic ZnIn2S4 (C-ZnIn2S4) quantum dots onto the surface of ultrathin hexagonal ZnIn2S4 (H-ZnIn2S4) nanosheets for photocatalytic reduction of nitroarenes to aminoarenes using water as a hydrogen donor. The optimal performance of photocatalytic nitro reduction over the 0D/2D CH-ZnIn2S4 homojunction reaches 96.1% within 20 min of visible light irradiation, which is 2.45 and 1.52 times than that of C-ZnIn2S4 (39.3%) and H-ZnIn2S4 (63.3%), respectively. The improved photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the formation of a step-type S-scheme homojunction, characterized by identity chemical composition and natural lattice matching. The configuration enables continuous band bending and a low energy barrier of charge transportation, benefiting the charge transfer across the interface while maximizing their redox capabilities. Furthermore, the 2D structure of H-ZnIn2S4 nanosheets offers abundant surface sites to immobilize the 0D C-ZnIn2S4 that provides ample exposed active sites with low overpotential for HER, thereby ensuring high hydrogenation reduction activity of nitroarenes. The study is expected to inspire further interest in the reasonable design of homojunction structures for efficient and sustainable photocatalytic redox reactions.

ZnIn2S4 Heterojunctions Constructed with In-MOF Precursor for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution without Cocatalysts

Znln2S4 has great prospects for photocatalytic water splitting to hydrogen by visible light. Herein, a novel Znln2S4-In-MOF (ZnInMS4) photocatalyst is elaborately synthesized by in situ method with In-MOF as the template and In3+ as the source. ZnInMS4 overcomes the fast interface charge recombination and a sluggish charge lifetime via the formed heterojunctions. Photoelectrochemical measurements reveal that the charge-transfer kinetics is enhanced since In-MOF is introduced to act as a reliable charge-transport channel. ZnInMS4 exhibits outstanding cocatalyst-free H2 evolution rate of 70 μmol h-1 under irradiation (λ > 420 nm), which is 3.2-fold higher than that of Znln2S4. In addition, the ZnInMS4 photocatalyst shows good stability in the 16 h continuous reaction. This work illustrates the feasibility of the MOF precursor instead of inorganic salts to directly synthesize photocatalysts with high performance.

Ni(OH)2 surface-modified hierarchical ZnIn2S4 nanosheets: dual photocatalytic application and mechanistic insights

The simultaneous utilization of electrons and holes to couple photocatalytic H2 production with selective biomass transformation has attracted immense interest toward achieving sustainability in the fields of energy and chemical industry. In this study, by assembling highly dispersed Ni(OH)2 onto ZnIn2S4 (ZIS), efficient H2 evolution along with highly selective photocatalytic oxidation of furfuryl alcohol (FA) to furfural (FF) in pure water was achieved under anaerobic conditions. The H2 production and FA conversion rates over the optimal Ni-ZIS sample reached about 686 and 583 μmol g-1 h-1, respectively, about 4.9 and 1.7 folds as those of pure ZIS. Moreover, the formation of by-products with C-C coupling was dramatically suppressed over Ni-ZIS, resulting in higher selectivity for FF (97%), which is about 2.7-fold that of pure ZIS (36%). Deep mechanistic studies were conducted to reveal the structural evolution and cocatalyst effects of Ni(OH)2. This study not only offers a feasible paradigm for modifying the surface of catalysts to tune the photoactivity and selectivity for product-oriented alcohol oxidation coupled with efficient H2 production in water but also reveals the working mechanism of the deposited Ni(OH)2 over ZIS toward coupling reactions.

High-efficiency visible-light-driven oxidation of primary C-H bonds in toluene over a CsPbBr3 perovskite supported by hierarchical TiO2 nanoflakes

Photocatalytic oxidation of toluene to valuable fine chemicals is of great significance, yet faces challenges in the development of advanced catalysts with both high activity and selectivity for the activation of inert C(sp3)-H bonds. Halide perovskites with remarkable optoelectronic properties have shown to be prospective photoactive materials, but the bulky structure with a small surface area and severe recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs are obstacles to application. Here, we fabricate a hierarchical nanoflower-shaped CsPbBr3/TiO2 heterojunction by assembling CsPbBr3 nanoparticles on 2D TiO2 nanoflake subunits. The design significantly downsizes the size of CsPbBr3 from micrometers to nanometers, and forms a type II heterojunction with intimate interfacial contact between CsPbBr3 and TiO2 nanoflakes, thereby accelerating the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. Moreover, the formed hierarchical heterojunction increaseslight absorption by refraction and scattering, offers a large surface area and enhances the adsorption of toluene molecules. Consequently, the optimized CsPbBr3/TiO2 exhibits a high performance (10 200 μmol g-1 h-1) for photocatalytic toluene oxidation with high selectivity (85%) for benzaldehyde generation under visible light. The photoactivity is about 20 times higher than that of blank CsPbBr3, and is among the best photocatalytic performances reported for selective oxidation of toluene under visible light irradiation.

Enhancement of Sulfur Source-Dependent Zn Vacancies in Different Photocatalytic Performances of ZnIn2S4 Nanoparticles

This study focuses on the synthesis and investigation of ZnIn2S4 nanoparticle (NP) photocatalysts treated with different sulfur sources, thioacetamide (TAA), or thiourea (TU), to explore their wavelength-dependent photocatalytic activity. The research aims to understand the impact of Zn vacancies present on the surface of ZnIn2S4 NPs. The investigation involves electron spin resonance and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to study the photocatalytic activity of ZnIn2S4-TU and ZnIn2S4-TAA NPs, following the characterization of surface morphology and electronic properties using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Additionally, the study delves into the wavelength-dependent photocatalytic degradation (PCD) activity of the ZnIn2S4 NPs using 2,5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) across a wide range. Notably, the selective oxidation of HMF using ZnIn2S4-TU NPs resulted in the formation of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) via 2,5-diformylfuran, with an efficiency exceeding 40% over the broad wavelength range. The research demonstrates that the irradiation wavelength for PCD is influenced by the number of defect structures introduced into the ZnIn2S4 NPs through the sulfur source.

Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Dehydrogenation of Alcohols on TiO2 via Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer for Coproduction of H2 and Aldehydes

Developing visible-light-driven photocatalysts for the catalytic dehydrogenation of organics is of great significance for sustainable solar energy utilization. Here, we first report that aromatic alcohols could be efficiently split into H₂ and aldehydes over TiO₂ under visible-light irradiation through a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) mechanism. A series of TiO₂ catalysts with different surface contents of the hydroxyl group (-OH) have been synthesized by controlling the hydrothermal and calcination synthesis methods. An optimal H₂ production rate of 18.6 μmol h^-1 is obtained on TiO₂ synthesized from the hydrothermal method with a high content of surface -OH. Experimental characterizations and comparison studies reveal that the surface -OH markedly influences the formation of LMCT complexes and thus changes the visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance. This work is anticipated to inspire further research endeavors in the design and fabrication of visible-light-driven photocatalyst systems based on the LMCT mechanism to realize the simultaneous synthesis of clean fuel and fine chemicals.
