Flexible Coordination Network Exhibiting Water Vapor-Induced Reversible Switching between Closed and Open Phases

Guest-selective shape-memory effect in a switchable metal-organic framework DUT-8(Zn)

Crystal size engineering allows tailoring of flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to achieve new properties. The gating type flexibility of the DUT-8(Zn) ([Zn2(2,6-ndc)2(dabco)]n, 2,6-ndc = 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate, dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo-[2.2.2]-octane) compound is known to be extremely particle size sensitive. Here, the physisorption of ethanol vapor gives rise to so-called shape-memory effect, leading to rigidification and flexibility suppression. According to powder X-ray diffraction and nitrogen physisorption experiments, the open pore phase is retained selectively after desorption of alcohols, which could be attributed to the nano-structuring and surface deformation of the crystals as a result of exposure to alcohols.

Bispidine Based Hg(II) 1D Coordination Polymers of Helical Topology: Stability, Selective Adsorption and 1D to 2D Dimensionality Change Via SC-to-SC Transformation

Bispidine based Hg(II) coordination polymers of helical topology CP-MeOH and CP-EtOH are almost isostructural (they mainly differ for the solvent included in their lattice and by a small % in unit cell parameters) but they differ for everything else: i) their intrinsic stability, ii) their ability to adsorb solvents upon prior evacuation, iii) their accessible structural transformations. In particular, one of the two starting materials, once evacuated, is capable to adsorb methanol from atmospheres containing binary and ternary mixtures of volatile organic compounds (MeOH, CHCl3 and EtOH) under ambient conditions (25 °C, 1 atm) and with a marked selectivity. The other one is not, but undergoes a 1D to 2D dimensionality change which can be monitored in situ by SC-XRD through a SC-to-SC process.

Chemistries and materials for atmospheric water harvesting

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is recognized as a crucial strategy to address the global challenge of water scarcity by tapping into the vast reserves of atmospheric moisture for potable water supply. Within this domain, sorbents lie in the core of AWH technologies as they possess broad adaptability across a wide spectrum of humidity levels, underpinned by the cyclic sorption and desorption processes of sorbents, necessitating a multi-scale viewpoint regarding the rational material and chemical selection and design. This Invited Review delves into the essential sorption mechanisms observed across various classes of sorbent systems, emphasizing the water-sorbent interactions and the progression of water networks. A special focus is placed on the insights derived from isotherm profiles, which elucidate sorbent structures and sorption dynamics. From these foundational principles, we derive material and chemical design guidelines and identify key tuning factors from a structural-functional perspective across multiple material systems, addressing their fundamental chemistries and unique attributes. The review further navigates through system-level design considerations to optimize water production efficiency. This review aims to equip researchers in the field of AWH with a thorough understanding of the water-sorbent interactions, material design principles, and system-level considerations essential for advancing this technology.

Isoreticular Contraction of Cage-like Metal-Organic Frameworks with Optimized Pore Space for Enhanced C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/C2H4 Separations

The C2H2 separation from CO2 and C2H4 is of great importance yet highly challenging in the petrochemical industry, owing to their similar physical and chemical properties. Herein, the pore nanospace engineering of cage-like mixed-ligand MFOF-1 has been accomplished via contracting the size of the pyridine- and carboxylic acid-functionalized linkers and introducing a fluoride- and sulfate-bridging cobalt cluster, based on a reticular chemistry strategy. Compared with the prototypical MFOF-1, the constructed FJUT-1 with the same topology presents significantly improved C2H2 adsorption capacity, and selective C2H2 separation performance due to the reduced cage cavity size, functionalized pore surface, and appropriate pore volume. The introduction of fluoride- and sulfate-bridging cubane-type tetranuclear cobalt clusters bestows FJUT-1 with exceptional chemical stability under harsh conditions while providing multiple potential C2H2 binding sites, thus rendering the adequate ability for practical C2H2 separation application as confirmed by the dynamic breakthrough experiments under dry and humid conditions. Additionally, the distinct binding mechanism is suggested by theoretical calculations in which the multiple supramolecular interactions involving C-H···O, C-H···F, and other van der Waals forces play a critical role in the selective C2H2 separation.

Water vapour and gas induced phase transformations in an 8-fold interpenetrated diamondoid metal-organic framework

In this work, we report the synthesis, structural characterisation and sorption properties of an 8-fold interpenetrated diamondoid (dia) metal-organic framework (MOF) that is sustained by a new extended linker ligand, [Cd(Imibz)₂], X-dia-2-Cd, HImibz or 2 = 4-((4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenylimino)methyl)benzoic acid. X-dia-2-Cd was found to exhibit reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformations between four distinct phases: an as-synthesised (from N,N-dimethylformamide) wide-pore phase, X-dia-2-Cd-α; a narrow-pore phase, X-dia-2-Cd-β, formed upon exposure to water; a narrow-pore phase obtained by activation, X-dia-2-Cd-γ; a medium-pore CO₂-loaded phase X-dia-2-Cd-δ. While the space group remained constant in the four phases, the cell volumes and calculated void space ranged from 4988.7 ų and 47% (X-dia-2-Cd-α), respectively, to 3200.8 ų and 9.1% (X-dia-2-Cd-γ), respectively. X-dia-2-Cd-γ also exhibited a water vapour-induced structural transformation to the water-loaded X-dia-2-Cd-β phase, resulting in an S-shaped sorption isotherm. The inflection point occurred at 18% RH with negligible hysteresis on the desorption profile. Water vapour temperature-humidity swing cycling (60% RH, 300 K to 0% RH, 333 K) indicated hydrolytic stability of X-dia-2-Cd and working capacity was retained after 128 cycles of sorbent regeneration. CO₂ (at 195 K) was also observed to induce a structural transformation in X-dia-2-Cd-γ and in situ PXRD studies at 1 bar of CO₂, 195 K revealed the formation of X-dia-2-Cd-δ, which exhibited 31% larger unit cell volume than X-dia-2-Cd-γ.

Selective sorption of oxygen and nitrous oxide by an electron donor-incorporated flexible coordination network

Incorporating strong electron donor functionality into flexible coordination networks is intriguing for sorption applications due to a built-in mechanism for electron-withdrawing guests. Here we report a 2D flexible porous coordination network, [Ni₂(4,4'-bipyridine)(VTTF)₂]n(1) (where H₂VTTF = 2,2'-[1,2-bis(4-benzoic acid)-1,2ethanediylidene]bis-1,3-benzodithiole), which exhibits large structural deformation from the as-synthesized or open phase (1α) into the closed phase (1β) after guest removal, as demonstrated by X-ray and electron diffraction. Interestingly, upon exposure to electron-withdrawing species, 1β reversibly undergoes guest accommodation transitions; 1α⊃O₂ (90 K) and 1α⊃N₂O (185 K). Moreover, the 1β phase showed exclusive O₂ sorption over other gases (N₂, Ar, and CO) at 120 K. The phase transformations between the 1α and 1β phases under these gases were carefully investigated by in-situ X-ray diffraction, in-situ spectroscopic studies, and DFT calculations, validating that the unusual sorption was attributed to the combination of flexible frameworks and VTTF (electron-donor) that induces strong interactions with electron-withdrawing species.
