A Silk Protein-Based Eutectogel as a Freeze-Resistant and Flexible Electrolyte for Zn-Ion Hybrid Supercapacitors

Nanolignin-Facilitated Robust Hydrogels

Recently, certain challenges and accompanying drawbacks have emerged in the preparation of high-strength and tough polymer hydrogels. Insights from wood science highlight the role of the intertwined molecular structure of lignin and crystalline cellulose in contributing to wood's strength. Herein, we immersed prestretched poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymer hydrogels into a solution of nanosized lignosulfonate sodium (LS), a water-soluble anionic polyelectrolyte, to creatively reconstruct this similar structure at the molecular scale in hydrogels. The nanosized LS effectively fixed and bundled the prestretched PVA polymers while inducing the formation of dense crystalline domains within the polymer matrix. Consequently, the interwoven structure of crystalline PVA and LS conferred good strength to the composite hydrogels, exhibiting a tensile strength of up to ∼23 MPa, a fracture strain of ∼350%, Young's modulus of ∼17 MPa, toughness of ∼47 MJ/m3, and fracture energy of ∼42 kJ/m2. This hydrogel far outperformed previous hydrogels composed directly of lignin and PVA (tensile strength <1.5 MPa). Additionally, the composite hydrogels demonstrated excellent antifreezing properties (<-80 °C). Notably, the LS-assisted reconstruction technology offers opportunities for the secondary fixation of PVA hydrogel shapes and high-strength welding of hydrogel components. This work introduces an approach for the high-value utilization of LS, a green byproduct of pulp production. LS's profound biomimetic strategy will be applied in multifunctional hydrogel fields.

Hydrogen-bonded micelle assembly directed conjugated microporous polymers for nanospherical carbon frameworks towards dual-ion capacitors

Well-orchestrated carbon nanostructure with superb stable framework and high surface accessibility is crucial for zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs). Herein, a hydrogen-bonded micelle self-assembly strategy is proposed for morphology-controllable synthesis of conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) derived carbon to boost zinc ion storage capability. In the strategy, F127 micellar assembly through intermolecular hydrogen bonds serves as structure-directed agents, directing CMPs' oligomers grow into nanospherical assembly. The nanospherical carbon frameworks derived from CMPs (CNS-2) have shown maximized surface accessibility due to their plentiful tunable porosity and hierarchical porous structure with abundant mesoporous interconnected channels, and superb stability originating from CMPs' robust framework, thus the CNS-2-based ZIHCs exhibit ultrahigh energy density of 163 Wh kg-1 and ultralong lifespan with 93 % capacity retention after 200, 000 cycles at 20 A g-1. Charged ion storage efficiency also lies in dual-ion alternate uptake of Zn2+ and CF3SO3- as well as chemical redox of Zn2+ with carbonyl/pyridine motifs forming O-Zn-N bonds. Maximized surface accessibility and dual-ion storage mechanism ensure excellent electrochemical performance. Thus, the hydrogen-bond-guide micelle self-assembly strategy has provided a facile way to design nanoarchitectures of CMPs derived carbon for advanced cathodes of ZIHCs.

Engineering a High-Strength and Superior-Electrolyte-Wettability Silk Fibroin-Based Gel Interface Achieving Dendrite-Free Zn Anode

Zn metal anode is confronted with notorious Zn dendrite growth caused by inhomogeneous Zn2+ deposition, rampant dendrite growth, and serious interface side reactions, which significantly hinder their large-scale implication. Interface modification engineering is a powerful strategy to improve the Zn metal anode by regulating Zn2+ deposition behavior, suppressing dendrite formation, and protecting the anode from electrolyte corrosion. Herein, we have designed a high-strength and superior-electrolyte-wettability composite gel protective layer based on silk fibroin (SF) and ionic liquids (ILs) on the Zn anode surface by a straightforward spin-coating strategy. The Zn ion transport kinetics and mechanical properties were further improved by following the incubation process to construct a more well-ordered β-sheet structure. Consequently, the incubated composite gel coating serves as a command station, guiding the Zn ion's preferential growth along the (002) plane, resulting in a smooth and uniform deposition morphology. Driven by these improvements, the zinc anode modified with this composite gel exhibits a remarkably long-term cycling lifespan up to 2200 h at 2 mA cm-2, while also displaying superior rate capability. This study represents a landmark achievement in the realm of electrochemical science, delineating a clear pathway toward the realization of a highly reversible and enduring Zn anode.

Selective extraction of anionic and cationic dyes using tailored hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents

In this work, eight kinds of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs), including four types of ionic and four types of non-ionic DESs, were prepared and applied in vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (LLME) technology. To explore the extraction ability of the hydrophobic DESs-based vortex-assisted LLME, four types of dyes were selected as analytes, involving anionic tartrazine (TA), amaranth (AM) and cationic phenosafranine (PF), methylene blue (MB). It turned out that the ionic and non-ionic hydrophobic DESs showed selective extraction on anionic and cationic dyes, respectively. In particular, the extraction efficiency of TA could reach 99.3 % when trioctylmethylammonium chloride-thymol ([TMAC][Thy]) was utilized as extraction agent. The partitioning efficiency of PF was up to 99.9 % by using decanoic acid-thymol ([DecA][Thy]) as extraction agent. The limits of detection (LODs) of TA and PF were 0.06 and 0.14 μg mL-1, respectively. The limits of quantification (LOQs) obtained for TA and PF were 0.20 and 0.47 μg mL-1, respectively. Besides, FT-IR and 1H NMR were utilized to investigate the extraction mechanism. The results demonstrated that the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic force were the main driving forces in the extraction process. Furthermore, through separating various anionic and cationic dyes, the selective extraction ability of [TMAC][Thy] and [DecA][Thy] were successfully verified. Hence, the feasible operation, high extraction efficiency and excellent selectivity make the developed hydrophobic DESs-based vortex-assisted LLME attractive in dyes separation.

Regenerated silk protein based hybrid film electrode with large area specific capacitance, high flexibility and light weight towards high-performance wearable energy storage

Planar wearable supercapacitors (PWSCs) have sparked intense interest owing to their hopeful application in smart electronics. However, current PWSCs suffered from poor electrochemical property, weak flexibility and/or large weight. To relieve these defects, in this study, we fabricated a high-performance PWSC using silk protein derived film electrodes (PPy/RSF/MWCNTs-2; RSF, PPy and MWCNTs represent regenerated silk film, polypyrrole and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, respectively, while 2 is the mass ratio of silk to MWCNTs), which were developed by 'dissolving-mixing-evaporating' and in situ polymerization. In three-electrode, PPy/RSF/MWCNTs-2 showed a superb area specific capacitance of 8704.7 mF cm-2 at 5 mA cm-2, which surpassed numerous reported PWSC electrodes, and had a decent durability with a capacitance retention of 90.7 % after 5000 cycles. The PPy/RSF/MWCNTs-2 derived PWSC showed a largest energy density of 281.3 μWh cm-2 at 1660.1 μW cm-2, and a power density as high as 13636.4 μW cm-2 at 125.6 μWh cm-2. Furthermore, impressive capacitive-mechanical stability with a capacitance retention of 92 % under bending angles from 0 to 150 was depicted. Thanks to the rational and affordable preparation, our study for the first time prepared RSF electrode that had great capacitive property, high mechanical flexibility and light weight, simultaneously. The encouraging results can not only open up a new path to manufacture high-performance flexible electrodes, but may also help to realize the high-value-added utilization of silk.

Strategies for Optimizing the Zn Anode/Electrolyte Interfaces Toward Stable Zn-Based Batteries

Aqueous rechargeable Zn-ion batteries (ARZIBs) have attracted extensive attention because of the advantages of high energy density, high safety, and low cost. However, the commercialization of ARZIBs is still challenging, mainly because of the low efficiency of Zn anodes. Several undesirable reactions (e.g., Zn dendrite and byproduct formation) always occur at the Zn anode/electrolyte interfaces, resulting in low Coulombic efficiency and rapid decay of ARZIBs. Motivated by the great interest in addressing these issues, various optimization strategies and related mechanisms have been proposed to stabilize the Zn anode-electrolyte interfaces and enlengthen the cycling lifespan of ARZIBs. Therefore, considering the rapid development of this field, updating the optimization strategies in a timely manner and understanding their protection mechanisms are highly necessary. This review provides a brief overview of the Zn anode/electrolyte interfaces from the fundamentals and challenges of Zn anode chemistry to related optimization strategies and perspectives. Specifically, these strategies are systematically summarized and classified, while several representative works are presented to illustrate the effect and corresponding mechanism in detail. Finally, future challenges and research directions for the Zn anode/electrolyte interfaces are comprehensively clarified, providing guidelines for accurate evaluation of the interfaces and further fostering the development of ARZIBs.

Self-Assembled Protein Nanofilm Regulating Uniform Zn Nucleation and Deposition Enabling Long-Life Zn Anodes

Rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (RZIBs) have gained promising attention as a feasible alternative for large-scale energy storage by the virtue of their intrinsic security, environmental benignity, low cost, and high volumetric capacity (5849 mAh cm-3 ). Nevertheless, the deep-rooted issues of dendrite formation and side reactions in unstable Zn metal anode have impeded RZIBs from being dependably deployed in their proposed applications. Herein, silk fibroin (SF) and lysozyme (ly), as natural biomacromolecules with abundant polar groups arranged in polypeptide backbones, are in situ self-assembled on the Zn anode surface to construct a homogeneous and compact protein nanofilm. Such protein nanofilm protecting layer presents a negative charge surface and significantly regulates Zn2+ deposition behavior. Meanwhile, synergistic flexible and robust features of protein nanofilm function as artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI), accommodates the dynamic volume deformation during deposition/dissolution, and blocks corrosion of side reactions. Consequently, the electrochemical stability of protein nanofilm-modified Zn anode is greatly improved, with an excellent extended lifespan of over 1100 h at a high current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a high cycling capacity of 10 mAh cm-2 , corresponding to a high depth of discharge (83% DODZn ). Furthermore, the highly reversible Zn electrode remarkably improved the overall performance of MnO2 ||Zn full-cells.
