Coupling between the 2D "Ligand" and 2D "Host" and Their Assembled Hierarchical Heterostructures for Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

In Situ Exsolution-Prepared Solid-Solution-Type Sulfides with Intracrystal Polarization for Efficient and Selective Absorption of Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Wave

The excellent dielectric properties and tunable structural design of metal sulfides have attracted considerable interest in realizing electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. However, compared with traditional monometallic and bimetallic sulfides that are extensively studied, the unique physical characteristics of solid-solution-type sulfides in response to EMW have not been revealed yet. Herein, a unique method for preparing high-purity solid-solution-type sulfides is proposed based on solid-phase in situ exsolution of different metal ions from hybrid precursors. Utilizing CoAl-LDH/MIL-88A composite as a precursor, Fe0.8Co0.2S single-phase nanoparticles are uniformly in situ formed on an amorphous substrate (denoted as CoAl), forming CoAl/Fe0.8Co0.2S heterostructure. Combing with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and wave absorption simulations, it is revealed that Fe0.8Co0.2S solid solution has stronger intracrystal polarization and electronic conductivity than traditional monometallic and bimetallic sulfides, which lead to higher dielectric properties in EM field. Therefore, CoAl/Fe0.8Co0.2S heterostructure exhibits significantly enhanced EMW absorption ability in the low-frequency region (2-6 GHz) and can achieve frequency screening by selectively absorbing EMW of specific frequency. This work not only provides a unique method for preparing high-purity solid-solution-type sulfides but also fundamentally reveals the physical essence of their excellent EMW absorption performance.

Restricted growth of molybdenum carbide nanoparticles in hierarchically porous nitrogen-doped carbon matrix for boosting electromagnetic wave absorption performance

With the development of electronic science and technology, electromagnetic pollution is becoming increasingly serious, which urgent people to develop wave-absorbing materials with the features of "thin, light, strong and wide". In this paper, restricted growth of molybdenum carbide nanoparticles in hierarchically porous nitrogen-doped carbon matrix (Mo2C/NC) was designed and prepared via a salt-assisted template route and carbonization process, whose morphology and the wave-absorbing properties are regulated by changing the content of Mo2C/NC nanoparticles. The honeycomb porous Mo2C/NC composites with large specific surface area and smooth surface can optimize the impedance matching and allow the entrance, multiple reflections and scattering of incident electromagnetic waves (EMW), which effective enhance the electromagnetic wave consumption. Meanwhile, the honeycomb cross-linked carbon matrix facilitates the construction of the conductive network and enhances its conductive loss. Furthermore, numerous Mo2C/NC nanoparticles dispersed restricted growth in carbon matrix induces interfacial polarization. In addition, the heteroatom nitrogen doping acts as dipole centers to induce dipole polarization under electromagnetic field. The uniquely designed Mo2C/NC absorbers show satisfactory EMW absorption behaviors of a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of -61.53 dB at 1.5 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 9.6 GHz at 3.5 mm. This work enriches the variety of EMW absorbers and offers the route to promote the EMW absorption performance, especially large effective absorption bandwidth.

CoCx‑induced interfacial octahedral Co2+ sites of NiCo-LDH electrode with improved faradic reactivity toward high-performance supercapacitor

Battery-like electrode materials are characterized by large theoretical capacitance but suffer from poor surface reactivity and insufficient electroactive sites thus limiting their practical charge storage capacity. To overcome this challenge, an effective strategy for vacancy modulation on battery-like electrode materials is necessary. Herein, we report for the first time an elaborately designed three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical heterostructure consisting of CoCx@NiCo-LDH on conductive nickel foam as a freestanding supercapacitor electrode. Benefiting from the weakening of the coordination of CoO bonds, the CoCx structure induces in-situ reconstruction of the NiCo-LDH lattice, resulting in the formation of abundant oxygen vacancies (interfacial octahedral Co2+ sites) that lower the OH- adsorption energy as determined by the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The resulting CoCx@NiCo-LDH/NF electrode exhibits an ultrahigh rate capability (2330 mF cm-2 at 0.3 mA cm-2, with capacitance retention of 51.5 % at 30 mA cm-2) and remarkable cycling performance (capacitance retention of 81.6 % after 10,000 cycles). Additionally, the assembled asymmetric devices deliver an extremely high energy density of 246 μWh cm-2 at the power density of 798 μW cm-2, with 87.8 % capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 8 mA cm-2. Overall, this study presents a simple yet effective strategy to construct high-performance battery-like electrodes for potential applications in energy storage, transportation, and communication.

Functional Tailoring of Multi-Dimensional Pure MXene Nanostructures for Significantly Accelerated Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Transition metal carbide (Ti3 C2 Tx MXene), with a large specific surface area and abundant surface functional groups, is a promising candidate in the family of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. However, the high conductivity of MXene limits its EMW absorption ability, so it remains a challenge to obtain outstanding EMW attenuation ability in pure MXene. Herein, by integrating HF etching, KOH shearing, and high-temperature molten salt strategies, layered MXene (L-MXene), network-like MXene nanoribbons (N-MXene NRs), porous MXene monolayer (P-MXene ML), and porous MXene layer (P-MXene L) are rationally constructed with favorable microstructures and surface states for EMW absorption. HF, KOH, and KCl/LiCl are used to functionalize MXene to tune its microstructure and surface state (F- , OH- , and Cl- terminals), thereby improving the EMW absorption capacity of MXene-based nanostructures. Impressively, with the unique structure, proper electrical conductivity, large specific surface area, and abundant porous defects, MXene-based nanostructures achieve good impedance matching, dipole polarization, and conduction loss, thus inheriting excellent EMW absorption performance. Consequently, L-MXene, N-MXene NRs, P-MXene ML, and P-MXene L enable a reflection loss (RL ) value of -43.14, -63.01, -60.45, and -56.50 dB with a matching thickness of 0.95, 1.51, 3.83, and 4.65 mm, respectively.

Homogeneous-heterogeneous interfaces in 2D/2D CoAl/Co9S8/Ni3S4 heterostructures for electromagnetic wave absorption

Exploring electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers with ultrathin matching thickness (d ≤ 1.5 mm), strong reflection loss (R_L ≤ -50 dB), and wide effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, R_L ≤ -10 dB) is urgent and essential for reducing EMW radiation and interference. Herein, a 2D/2D CoAl/Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₄ heterostructure was constructured using simple hydrothermal and pyrolysis methods. 2D porous CoAl nanosheets and 2D Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₄ ultrathin nanosheets are assembled by small nanoparticle chains. Strikingly, the CoAl/Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₄ heterostructure exhibits remarkable EMW absorption performance with a R_L value of -61.56 dB, a high EAB of 4 GHz, and an ultrathin matching thickness of 1.25 mm. Mechanism investigations reveal that the CoAl/Co₉S₈/Ni₃S₄ heterostructure delivers dual metal sulfides behavior, high specific surface area, strong interactions, rich defects (N doping), and abundant homogeneous and heterogeneous interfaces, which promote good impedance matching, dielectric loss (interface polarization, conductive loss, and dipole polarization), as well as magnetic loss (natural resonance, exchange resonance, and eddy current loss) characteristics. This work can provide insights into the mechanism of dual metal sulfides used as high-performance EMW absorbers and deepen our understanding of the design and application of 2D/2D heterostructures.

Microwave-Excited, Antibacterial Core-Shell BaSO4/BaTi5O11@PPy Heterostructures for Rapid Treatment of S. aureus-Infected Osteomyelitis

Owing to its deep penetration capability, microwave (MW) therapy has emerged as a promising method to eradicate deep-seated acute bone infection diseases such as osteomyelitis. However, the MW thermal effect still needs to be enhanced to achieve rapid and efficient treatment of deep focal infected areas. In this work, the multi-interfacial core-shell structure barium sulfate/barium polytitanates@polypyrrole (BaSO₄/BaTi₅O₁₁@PPy) was prepared, which exhibited enhanced MW thermal response via the well-designed multi-interfacial structure. To be specific, BaSO₄/BaTi₅O₁₁@PPy achieved rapid temperature increases in a short period and efficient clearance of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infections under MW irradiation. After 15 min MW irradiation, the antibacterial efficacy of BaSO₄/BaTi₅O₁₁@PPy can reach up to 99.61 ± 0.22%. Their desirable thermal production capabilities originated from enhanced dielectric loss including multiple interfacial polarization and conductivity loss. Additionally, in vitro analysis illuminated that the underlying antimicrobial mechanism was attributed to the noticeable MW thermal effect and changes in energy metabolic pathways on bacterial membrane instigated by BaSO₄/BaTi₅O₁₁@PPy under MW irradiation. Considering remarkable antibacterial efficiency and acceptable biosafety, we envision that it has significant value in broadening the pool of desirable candidates to fight against S. aureus-infected osteomyelitis. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: : The treatment of deep bacterial infection remains challenging due to the ineffectiveness of antibiotic treatment and the susceptibility to bacterial resistance. Microwave (MW) thermal therapy (MTT) is a promising approach with remarkable penetration to centrally heat up the infected area. This study proposes to utilize the core-shell structure BaSO₄/BaTi₅O₁₁@PPy as an MW absorber to achieve localized heating under MW radiation for MTT. In vitro experiments demonstrated that the disrupted bacterial membrane is primarily due to the localized high temperature and interrupted electron transfer chain. As a consequence, its antibacterial rate is as high as 99.61% under MW irradiation. It is shown that the BaSO₄/BaTi₅O₁₁@PPy is a promising candidate for eliminating bacterial infection in deep-seated tissues.

ZnO-decorated SiC@C hybrids with strong electromagnetic absorption

A novel strategy is provided to improve the absorption of SiC nanomaterials through surface carbonization of SiC nanowires and hydrolysis. SiC@C-ZnO composites were synthesized with different dosages of ZnNO3·6H2O. Composition, microstructure, and electromagnetic properties of the composites were characterized and analyzed. Results from TEM and XRD show that crystalline ZnO particles adhere to the surface of amorphous carbon, and the ZnO content increases as a function of a dosage of ZnNO3·6H2O. The as-prepared SiC@C-ZnO hybrids exhibit effective electromagnetic absorption, which is related to a synergy effect of different dielectric loss processes. The minimum reflection loss reached -65.4 dB at 11 GHz at a sample thickness of 3.1 mm, while the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) reached 7 GHz at a sample thickness of 2.56 mm. Furthermore, the EAB of the samples can also cover the whole X band and Ku band at small sample thicknesses (2.09-3.47 mm). The excellent properties of the materials suggest great prospect as electromagnetic absorbers.

Advances and mechanisms in polymer composites toward thermal conduction and electromagnetic wave absorption

Polymer composites have essential applications in electronics due to their versatility, stable performance, and processability. However, with the increasing miniaturization and high power of electronics in the 5G era, there are significant challenges related to heat accumulation and electromagnetic wave (EMW) radiation in narrow spaces. Traditional solutions involve using either thermally conductive or EMW absorbing polymer composites, but these fail to meet the demand for multi-functional integrated materials in electronics. Therefore, designing thermal conduction and EMW absorption integrated polymer composites has become essential to solve the problems of heat accumulation and electromagnetic pollution in electronics and adapt to its development trend. Researchers have developed different approaches to fabricate thermal conduction and EMW absorption integrated polymer composites, including integrating functional fillers with both thermal conduction and EMW absorption functions and innovating processing methods. This review summarizes the latest research progress, factors that affect performance, and the mechanisms of thermal conduction and EMW absorption integrated polymer composites. The review also discusses problems that limit the development of these composites and potential solutions and development directions. The aim of this review is to provide references for the development of thermal conduction and EMW absorption integrated polymer composites.

Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Derivatives as Promising Chemiresistive Gas Sensing Materials: A Review

The emission of harmful gases has seriously exceeded relative standards with the rapid development of modern industry, which has shown various negative impacts on human health and the natural environment. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based materials have been widely used as chemiresistive gas sensing materials for the sensitive detection and monitoring of harmful gases such as NO_x, H₂S, and many volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In particular, the derivatives of MOFs, which are usually semiconducting metal oxides and oxide-carbon composites, hold great potential to prompt the surface reactions with analytes and thus output amplified resistance changing signals of the chemiresistors, due to their high specific surface areas, versatile structural tunability, diversified surface architectures, as well as their superior selectivity. In this review, we introduce the recent progress in applying sophisticated MOFs-derived materials for chemiresistive gas sensors, with specific emphasis placed on the synthesis and structural regulation of the MOF derivatives, and the promoted surface reaction mechanisms between MOF derivatives and gas analytes. Furthermore, the practical application of MOF derivatives for chemiresistive sensing of NO₂, H₂S, and typical VOCs (e.g., acetone and ethanol) has been discussed in detail.
