Metal-Organic Framework Flowers as a Naked-Eye Colorimetric Indicator of Trace Water

Smartphone Imaging Device for Multimodal Detection of Hydrogen Sulfide Using Cu-Doped MOF Sensors

Multimodal sensing platforms may offer reliable, fast results, but it is still challenging to incorporate biosensors with high discriminating ability in complex biological samples. Herein, we established a highly sensitive dual colorimetric/electrochemical monitoring approach for the detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) utilizing Cu-doped In-based metal-organic frameworks (Cu/In-MOFs) combined with a versatile color selector software-based smartphone imaging device. H2S can result in the enhancement of the electrochemical signal because of the electroactive substance copper sulfide (CuxS), the decrease of the colorimetric signal of the characteristic absorption response caused by the strong coordination effect on Cu/In-MOFs, and the obvious changes of red-green-blue (RGB) values of images acquired via an intelligent smartphone. Attractively, the Cu/In-MOFs-based multimodal detection guarantees precise and sensitive detection of H2S with triple-signal detection limits of 0.096 μM (electrochemical signals), 0.098 μM (colorimetric signals), and 0.099 μM (smartphone signals) and an outstanding linear response. This analytical toolkit provides an idea for fabricating a robust, sensitive, tolerant matrix and reliable sensing platform for rapidly monitoring H2S in clinical disease diagnosis and visual supervision.

A "turn-on" fluorescent sensor based on three-component covalent organic framework for trace water detection

Trace amount of H2O is difficult to eliminate in laboratory environments and chemical industries as impurities. In some chemical reactions, trace amount of H2O can alter final reaction products, yield, and selectivity. So, the detection of trace H2O is very important. Herein, a series of TFPT[X]-BMTH- covalent organic frameworks (COFs) (X = 0, 33, 50, 67, 100 %) with intramolecular charge transfer effect (ICT) and aggregate-induced emission (AIE) characteristics were synthesized by amino-aldehyde condensation reaction between 2,5-bis(2-methoxyethoxy)terephthalohydrazide (BMTH)/ 1,3,5-tris(p-formylphenyl)benzene (TFPB) and 4,4',4''-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tribenzaldehyde (TFPT). By changing TFPT' content in TFPT[X]-BMTH-COFs, the ICT and AIE of TFPT[X]-BMTH-COFs can be controlled, and accordingly the response to trace H2O can be adjusted. A H2O sensor based on TFPT[67]-BMTH-COF with a wide linear range from 0 wt% to 0.5 wt% was developed and the detection limit was 0.00007 wt%. In addition, a portable fluorescent test paper based on TFPT[67]-BMTH-COF for visual detection of trace H2O in honey samples and salt was constructed. This work has important guiding significance for the development of fluorescent probes for the visual detection of trace water.

Multi-analyte fluorescence sensing based on a post-synthetically functionalized two-dimensional Zn-MOF nanosheets featuring excited-state proton transfer process

Covalent post-synthetic modification of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represents an underexplored but promising avenue for allowing the addition of specific fluorescent recognition elements to produce the novel MOF-based sensory materials with multiple-analyte detection capability. Here, an excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) active sensor 2D-Zn-NS-P was designed and constructed by covalent post-synthetic incorporation of the excited-state tautomeric 2-hydroxypyridine moiety into the ultrasonically exfoliated amino-tagged 2D Zn-MOF nanosheets (2D-Zn-NS). The water-mediated ESPT process facilitates the highly accessible active sites incorporated on the surface of 2D-Zn-NS-P to specifically respond to the presence of water in common organic solvents via fluorescence turn-on behavior, and accurate quantification of trace amount of water in acetonitrile, acetone and ethanol was established using the as-synthesized nanosheet sensor with the detection sensitivity (<0.01% v/v) superior to the conventional Karl Fischer titration. Upon exposure to Fe3+ or Cr2O72-, the intense blue emission of the aqueous colloidal dispersion of 2D-Zn-NS-P was selectively quenched even in the coexistence of common inorganic interferents. The prohibition of the water-mediated ESPT process and local emission, induced by the coordination of ESPT fluorophore with Fe3+ or by Cr2O72- competitively absorbs the excitation energy, was proposed to responsible for the fluorescence turn-off sensing of the respective analytes. The present study offers the attractive prospect to develop the ESPT-based fluorescent MOF nanosheets by covalent post-synthetic modification strategy as multi-functional sensors for detection of target analytes.
