Bioinspired Wire-on-Pillar Magneto-Responsive Superhydrophobic Arrays

Soft wetting: Substrate softness- and time-dependent droplet/bubble adhesion

HYPOTHESIS

The droplet/bubble adhesion characteristics depend on the length of the droplet/bubble three-phase contact line. Since the deformation caused by the liquid-gas interfacial tension on the soft substrate, referred as to the wetting ridge, retards contact line spreading and retraction, we conjecture that the droplet/bubble adhesion characteristics depend also on the substrate softness.

EXPERIMENTS

Soft substrates with various shear moduli are prepared and characterized by the spreading and receding dynamics of water droplets and underwater bubbles. Snap-in and normal adhesion forces of droplets/bubbles on such soft substrates are directly measured along with the visualized droplet/bubble shape profiles.

FINDINGS

The droplet/bubble snap-in force, which corresponds to the short-time spreading dynamics, decreases with a decrease in the substrate shear modulus because of the retarded contact line spreading. The droplet maximal adhesion force on a soft substrate can be counterintuitively either smaller or larger than its counterpart on the rigid substrate depending on different dwelling times, i.e., the droplet/bubble-substrate contact time before droplet/bubble-substrate separation. The former is attributed to the retarded contact line spreading, whereas the latter is attributed to the retarded contact line retraction. The substrate softness- and dwelling time-dependent droplet/bubble adhesion reported in this study will benefit various applications related to soft substrates.

Soft wetting: an analytical model for pillar topography- and softness-dependent droplet depinning force

The extent to which a droplet pins on a textured substrate is determined by the dynamics of the contact line and the liquid-vapor interface. However, the synergistic contribution of contact line sliding and interface distortion to the droplet depinning force remains unknown. More strikingly, current models fail to predict the depinning force per unit length of droplets on soft pillar arrays. Therefore, we fabricate soft pillar arrays with varying geometrical dimensions and mechanical properties and measure the depinning forces per unit length by allowing droplets to evaporate on such substrates. We then analyze the decrease in excess Gibbs free energy of the apparent droplet caused by the detachment of the droplet boundary from the previously pinned pillars. In contrast to prior notions, based on the measured decreases in excess Gibbs free energy, we find that the coefficient, that governs the ratio of interface distortion's contribution to the depinning force to that of the sliding contact line, increases with a decrease in pillar packing density. By considering the combined contribution from contact line sliding, liquid-vapor interface distortion, and pillar deflection, we introduce an analytical model to predict the droplet depinning force per unit length and corroborate the model using experimental data reported in this and prior studies.

Engineered Sustainable Omniphobic Coatings to Control Liquid Spreading on Food-Contact Materials

The adhesion of sticky liquid foods to a contacting surface can cause many technical challenges. The food manufacturing sector is confronted with many critical issues that can be overcome with long-lasting and highly nonwettable coatings. Nanoengineered biomimetic surfaces with distinct wettability and tunable interfaces have elicited increasing interest for their potential use in addressing a broad variety of scientific and technological applications, such as antifogging, anti-icing, antifouling, antiadhesion, and anticorrosion. Although a large number of nature-inspired surfaces have emerged, food-safe nonwetted surfaces are still in their infancy, and numerous structural design aspects remain unexplored. This Review summarizes the latest scientific research regarding the key principles, fabrication methods, and applications of three important categories of nonwettable surfaces: superhydrophobic, liquid-infused slippery, and re-entrant structured surfaces. The Review is particularly focused on new insights into the antiwetting mechanisms of these nanopatterned structures and discovering efficient platform methodologies to guide their rational design when in contact with food materials. A detailed description of the current opportunities, challenges, and future scale-up possibilities of these nanoengineered surfaces in the food industry is also provided.

A Superhydrophobicity-Slipperiness Switchable Surface with Magneto- and Thermo-responsive Wires for Repelling Complex Droplets

The inefficacy of repelling water droplets laden with macromolecules (complex droplets or diluted polymer solution) is a long-standing shortcoming of superhydrophobic surfaces, which severely limits their reliability in practical applications. Here, we design a surface termed the superhydrophobicity-slipperiness switchable surface (3S surface), which demonstrates superhydrophobicity at room temperature and slipperiness when heated. The 3S surface is composed of magneto-responsive wires coated with superhydrophobic nanoparticles and impregnated with thermoresponsive paraffin, exhibiting lotus leaf-inspired passive water repellency and respiratory cilia-inspired active water repellency at room temperature. When heated, the impregnated paraffin melts and forms a lubricant layer atop the surface structures, exhibiting the pitcher-plant-inspired removal of complex droplets that remain pinned on conventional superhydrophobic surfaces. The counterintuitive integration of superhydrophobicity (a liquid-solid-gas composite system) and slipperiness (a liquid-lubricant-gas system) into a surface and the on-demand switch between them are not only important to the applicability of self-cleaning surfaces to real-world environments, where complex liquids are inevitable, but also provide insights into various interface-related applications.

Directional Manipulation of Drops and Solids on a Magneto-Responsive Slippery Surface

The cloaking of the droplet and solid spheres by a thin ferrofluid layer forms a ferrofluid-wetting ridge, enabling the magnet-assisted directional manipulation of droplets and solid spheres on the magneto-responsive slippery surface. Understanding the interplay of various forces governing motion unravels the manipulation mechanism. The transportation characteristics of droplets and solid spheres on such surfaces enable their controlled manipulation in multiple applications. Here, we prepare magneto-responsive slippery surfaces by using superhydrophobic coatings on glass slides, creating a porous network and impregnating them with ferrofluid. Using a permanent magnet (and its translation) in the proximity of these surfaces, we manipulate the motion of liquid drops and solid spheres. Upon dispensing the droplet on the magneto-responsive slippery surface, the droplet is cloaked by a thin ferrofluid layer and forms a ferrofluid wetting ridge. Incorporating the magnetic field creates a magnetic-nanoparticle-rich zone surrounding the ferrofluid ridge. Thereafter, the motion of the magnet gives rise to the movement of the droplet. We found that the interplay of the magnetic force and viscous drag leads to the magnetic manipulation of droplets in a controlled fashion up to a certain magnet speed. Increasing the magnet speed further results in the uncontrolled motion of the droplet, where the droplet cannot follow the magnet trajectory. Moreover, we delineate multifunctional droplet manipulations, such as trapping, pendant droplet manipulation, coalescence, and microchemical reactions, which have wide engineering applications.

Bioinspired Fluoride-Free Magnetic Microcilia Arrays for Anti-Icing and Multidimensional Droplet Manipulation

The accumulation of ice on surfaces will bring safety issues to various human activities. Researchers have been actively developing superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS) as good anti-icing materials. However, some limitations, such as high cost, complexity of preparation, and lack of sufficient durability in extreme environments, restrict their practical applications. Inspired by bronchial mucosa cilia structure and the superhydrophobic lotus leaf structure, we generated ordered magnetic microcilia arrays (MMA) surfaces within 1 min by a fast and controllable microhole assisted magnetic-induced microcilia self-growth method. Fluoride-free superhydrophobic MMA (SMMA) was prepared by impregnating MMA into hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) modified SiO2 solution. SMMA exhibits excellent static anti-icing performance, which can significantly delay the freezing of static droplets in supercooled environments. The SMMA surface still maintains excellent dynamic anti-icing performance at -30 °C after 100 times of supercooled droplet impact. Furthermore, SMMA shows anti-icing performance for up to 2 months at low temperatures (-18 °C). Due to the sensitive magnetic response and excellent bending properties of the cilia, the MMA and SMMA surfaces also demonstrate outstanding multifunctional droplet manipulation under a magnetic field. The MMA surface has the ability to vertically capture and release droplets. The SMMA can achieve horizontal transport of droplets, mixing and microchemical detection, antigravity droplet transport in an 8° inclined array, and even complex objects can be easily transported. More importantly, the SMMA surface exhibits outstanding mechanical durability and chemical stability. It provides insights into the preparation of integrated anti-icing and droplet manipulation surfaces by using a simple green and low-cost method.

Directional Rebound of Microdroplets on a Magneto-Responsive Micropillar Array Surface

The manipulation of droplet movement behavior is of scientific importance and has practical applications in many fields, such as biological analysis, water collection, oil-water separation, deicing, antifrosting, and so on. Using the magneto-responsive surface to dynamically change the surface morphology is an effective method to realize droplet manipulation. A replica molding technique was used to fabricate the surface with the magneto-responsive micropillar array, and the direction of the micropillar array could be changed dynamically with the magnetic induction intensity. The mechanism of the droplet directional rebound on the magneto-responsive surface and the implementation of the controllability of droplet movement were investigated. On the magneto-responsive surface, it was achievable to realize the directional rebound of droplets on the micrometer scale. The critical condition for the droplet directional rebound was identified. The force and energy of the droplet during the spreading and retraction stages were analyzed, which lay a theoretical foundation for the precise control of droplet directional rebound.

Advances in the Research of Photo, Electrical, and Magnetic Responsive Smart Superhydrophobic Materials: Synthesis and Potential Applications

With the rapid advancement of technology, the wettability of conventional superhydrophobic materials no longer suffice to meet the demands of practical applications. Intelligent responsive superhydrophobic materials have emerged as a highly sought-after material in various fields. The exceptional superhydrophobicity, reversible wetting, and intelligently controllable characteristics of these materials have led to extensive applications across industries, including industry, agriculture, defense, and medicine. Therefore, the development of intelligent superhydrophobic materials with superior performance, economic practicality, enhanced sensitivity, and controllability assumes utmost importance in advancing technology worldwide. This article provides a summary of the wettability principles of superhydrophobic surfaces and the mechanisms behind intelligent responsive superhydrophobicity. Furthermore, it reviews and analyzes the recent research progress on light, electric, and magnetic responsive superhydrophobic materials, encompassing aspects such as material synthesis, modification, performance, and responses under diverse external stimuli. The article also explores the challenges associated with different types of responsive superhydrophobic materials and the unique application prospects of light, electric, and magnetic responsive superhydrophobic materials. Additionally, it outlines the future directions for the development of intelligent responsive superhydrophobic materials.

Soft Wetting: Droplet Receding Contact Angles on Soft Superhydrophobic Surfaces

Despite intensive investigations on the droplet receding contact angle on superhydrophobic surfaces, i.e., a key parameter characterizing surface wettability and adhesion, the quantitative correlation between the surface structure mechanical properties (softness) and the droplet receding contact angles remains vague. By systematically varying the geometric dimensions and mechanical properties of soft pillar arrays, we find that the droplet receding contact angles decrease with the decrease in the pillar spring constant. Most surprisingly, the densely packed pillar arrays may result in larger receding contact angles than those on sparsely packed pillars, opposing the understanding of rigid pillar arrays, where the receding contact angles increase with a decrease in the packing density of pillars. This is attributed to the collective effects of capillarity and elasticity, where the energy consumed by the sliding contact line, the energy stored in the distorted liquid-vapor interface, and the energy stored in the deflected pillar contribute to the droplet depinning characteristics. We develop an analytical model to predict the droplet receding contact angles on soft superhydrophobic pillar arrays with knowledge of the material intrinsic receding contact angle, the pillar geometry, and the pillar mechanical properties. The predictions are corroborated by the experimental data measured in this and prior studies.

Structural Optimization Design of Microfluidic Chips Based on Fast Sequence Pair Algorithm

The market for microfluidic chips is experiencing significant growth; however, their development is hindered by a complex design process and low efficiency. Enhancing microfluidic chips' design quality and efficiency has emerged as an integral approach to foster their advancement. Currently, the existing structural design schemes lack careful consideration regarding the impact of chip area, microchannel length, and the number of intersections on chip design. This inadequacy leads to redundant chip structures resulting from the separation of layout and wiring design. This study proposes a structural optimization method for microfluidic chips to address these issues utilizing a simulated annealing algorithm. The simulated annealing algorithm generates an initial solution in advance using the fast sequence pair algorithm. Subsequently, an improved simulated annealing algorithm is employed to obtain the optimal solution for the device layout. During the wiring stage, an advanced wiring method is used to designate the high wiring area, thereby increasing the success rate of microfluidic chip wiring. Furthermore, the connection between layout and routing is reinforced through an improved layout adjustment method, which reduces the length of microchannels and the number of intersections. Finally, the effectiveness of the structural optimization approach is validated through six sets of test cases, successfully achieving the objective of enhancing the design quality of microfluidic chips.
