Abstract
Squaraine dyes possess sharp far-red active transition with high extinction coefficient and form aggregates on TiO2 surface. Aggregation of dyes on TiO2 has been considered as a detrimental factor for DSSC device performance, which can be controlled by appending alkyl groups to the dye structures. Hence by integrating alkylated (alkyl groups with both in-plane and out-of-plane) aryl group with indoline moiety to make it compatible with other electrolytes and for controlling the dye-aggregation, a series of squaraine acceptor-based dyes SQA4-6 have been designed and synthesized. SQA4-6 dyes showed absorption between 642 and 653 nm (λmax), photophysical and electrochemical studies indicated that the HOMO energy levels of this sets of dyes are well aligned with the potentials of I-/I 3 - and [Co(bpy)3]2+/3+ redox shuttles for better dye regeneration process. DSSC device efficiency of 3% has been achieved for SQA5 dye with iodolyte (I-/I 3 - ) electrolyte in the presence of 0.3 mM of chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA). The IPCE profile of DSSC device fabricated with SQA4-6 dyes indicated the contribution of aggregated structures for the photocurrent generation.

Abstract
In recent decades, considerable attention has been focused on the design and development of surfaces with defined or tunable properties for a wide range of applications and fields. To this end, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of organic compounds offer a unique and straightforward route of modifying and engineering the surface properties of any substrate. Thus, alkane-based self-assembled monolayers constitute one of the most extensively studied organic thin-film nanomaterials, which have found wide applications in antifouling surfaces, the control of wettability or cell adhesion, sensors, optical devices, corrosion protection, and organic electronics, among many other applications, some of which have led to their technological transfer to industry. Nevertheless, recently, aromatic-based SAMs have gained importance as functional components, particularly in molecular electronics, bioelectronics, sensors, etc., due to their intrinsic electrical conductivity and optical properties, opening up new perspectives in these fields. However, some key issues affecting device performance still need to be resolved to ensure their full use and access to novel functionalities such as memory, sensors, or active layers in optoelectronic devices. In this context, we will present herein recent advances in π-conjugated systems-based self-assembled monolayers (e.g., push-pull chromophores) as active layers and their applications.

Abstract
Over the years, porphyrins have arisen as exceptional photosensitizers given their ability to act as chlorophyll-mimicking dyes, thus, transferring energy from the light-collecting areas to the reaction centers, as it happens in natural photosynthesis. For this reason, porphyrin-sensitized TiO2-based nanocomposites have been widely exploited in the field of photovoltaics and photocatalysis in order to overcome the well-known limitations of these semiconductors. However, even though both areas of application share some common working principles, the development of solar cells has led the way in what is referred to the continuous improvement of these architectures, particularly regarding the molecular design of these photosynthetic pigments. Yet, those innovations have not been efficiently translated to the field of dye-sensitized photocatalysis. This review aims at filling this gap by performing an in-depth exploration of the most recent advances in the understanding of the role played by the different structural motifs of porphyrins as sensitizers in light-driven TiO2-mediated catalysis. With this goal in mind, the chemical transformations, as well as the reaction conditions under which these dyes must operate, are taken in consideration. The conclusions drawn from this comprehensive analysis offer valuable hints for the implementation of novel porphyrin-TiO2 composites, which may pave the way toward the fabrication of more efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract
We introduce a computational approach to study porphyrin-like transition metal complexes, bridging density functional theory and exact many-body techniques, such as the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). We first derive a multi-orbital Anderson impurity Hamiltonian starting from first principles considerations that qualitatively reproduce generalized gradient approximation (GGA)+U results when ignoring inter-orbital Coulomb repulsion U ′ and Hund exchange J. An exact canonical transformation is used to reduce the dimensionality of the problem and make it amenable to DMRG calculations, including all many-body terms (both intra- and inter-orbital), which are treated in a numerically exact way. We apply this technique to FeN 4 centers in graphene and show that the inclusion of these terms has dramatic effects: as the iron orbitals become single occupied due to the Coulomb repulsion, the inter-orbital interaction further reduces the occupation, yielding a non-monotonic behavior of the magnetic moment as a function of the interactions, with maximum polarization only in a small window at intermediate values of the parameters. Furthermore, U ′ changes the relative position of the peaks in the density of states, particularly on the iron d z 2 orbital, which is expected to affect the binding of ligands greatly.

Abstract
Introduction of an electron-donating meso-diarylamino group into a porphyrin core affords its broadened and red-shifted absorption and raises the HOMO level of the porphyrin. In this regard, porphyrins with multiple meso-diarylamino groups are expected to show unique optical and electrochemcial properties depending on the number of the meso-diarylamino groups. Herein, we report a series of porphyrins with a different number of the meso-diarylamino groups. They were prepared by the iodine(III)-mediated oxidative amination reaction of the corresponding meso-free porphyrins. With increasing the number of the meso-diarylamino groups, both red shifts and broadening in the absorption and negative shifts in the oxidation potential were observed. Notably, the oxidation potential of the porphyrin with four meso-diarylamino groups is comparable to that of tetrathiafulvalene, which is one of representative electron donors, suggesting the potential utility of multiply meso-aminated porphyrins as hole-transporting materials and as electron donors forming charge-transfer complexes with electron acceptors. We believe that this study sheds light on porphyrins with multiple electron-donating groups as organic functional materials.

Abstract
A series of new porphyrin dyes (XW42-XW44) containing oligo(ethylene glycol) units have been designed and synthesized. Two triethylene glycol units were introduced into the phenothiazine moiety of XW42, whereas diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol chains were introduced to afford XW43 and XW44, respectively. Interestingly, the efficiencies of the DSSCs were clearly dependent on the chain lengths. Among the three dyes, XW42 and XW43 exhibited relatively high open-circuit voltages of 751 and 750 mV, respectively, and XW43 exhibited the highest efficiency of 10.32 % owing to the presence of the DEG chains with suitable lengths and excellent ability to trap Li+ . Furthermore, through a combined coadsorption and cosensitization approach, the efficiencies were dramatically enhanced. As a result, a highest efficiency of 12.10 % was obtained for the XW43+chenodeoxycholic acid+PT-C6 (a metal-free organic dye) system, which ranks among the highest efficiencies of cells based on the traditional iodine electrolyte.

Abstract
A systematic study for the rational design of porphyrins (P4 spider-shaped derivatives) with potential application in dye-sensitized solar cells is presented. Using density functional theory (DFT) (B3LYP/6-31G*) and time-dependent DFT (M06/6-31G*) we show that the UV-vis absorption properties of a spider-shaped Zn(ii) porphyrin, previously synthesized by Stangel et al., may be greatly improved by applying some push-pull strategies in meso positions. We found that the selected triphenylamine push group induces a remarkable improvement in the absorption bands of P4 spider-shaped derivatives. The pull effect reached through the π-electron-rich phenyl group and the benzodithiazole (BTD) group allowed the Q bands to be red-shifted up to 689 nm, much longer than the 593 nm reported experimentally for the original spider-shaped porphyrin. The adsorption results of the P4 spider-shaped derivatives onto a TiO2-anatase surface model [Ti16O34H4] through the carboxylic acid group showed that the adsorptions energies were favourable and very similar in all cases. Natural bond orbitals (NBO) indicated a two-center bond (BD) O(carboxyl)-Ti(TiO2) for the porphyrin with the highest adsorption energy (8.27 kcal mol-1), and donor acceptor interactions from LP O(carboxyl) to Ti(TiO2) for the other porphyrins. The natural transition orbitals (NTO) for P4-derivatives-TiO2 confirm the nature of the excited states associated with Q and Soret bands. Finally, the frontier molecular orbitals revealed charge-separated states between those occupied and unoccupied, indicating a favourable charge-transfer process between the dyes and the surface conduction bands. In conclusion, this work showed a systematic study based on the push-pull strategy that improves the performance of porphyrins with the purpose to be used in dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract
Photocurrent ( Jsc) and photovoltage ( Voc) are two important parameters for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to achieve high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Herein, we synthesize four novel porphyrin dyes, XW36-XW39, using an N-phenyl-substituted phenothiazine donor to pursue higher PCE. For XW36 and XW37, the N-phenyl group is wrapped with two ortho-alkoxy chains. In contrast, it is substituted with a para-alkoxy group in XW38 and XW39. The phenothiazine wrapping in XW36 and XW37 induces more serious distortion, which is beneficial for anti-aggregation but unfavorable for the electron transfer from donor to a porphyrin framework. Thus, individual porphyrin dyes XW36 and XW37 exhibit efficiencies of 9.05 and 9.58%, respectively, lower than those of 9.51 and 10.0% achieved for XW38 and XW39, respectively. Besides, the introduction of a methyl group into a benzoic acid acceptor unit is conducive to anti-aggregation and thus improves the Voc and efficiencies. Therefore, higher efficiencies were achieved for XW37 and XW39, compared with XW36 and XW38, respectively. Interestingly, although the individual XW36 dye shows a lowest efficiency among the four dyes, a highest efficiency of 11.7% was obtained for XW36 on the basis of synergetic adsorption with chenodeoxycholic acid and PT-C6 because of simultaneously improved Jsc and Voc, which may be ascribed to the lowest dye-loading amount of XW36 among all of these porphyrin dyes, with the largest vacancy area left on the TiO2 surface available for cosensitizer PT-C6, resulting in a highest Jsc. The high efficiency of 11.7% is one of the highest efficiencies using I-/I3- electrolytes in DSSCs. These results provide an effective strategy for developing efficient DSSCs by the targeted coadsorption and cosensitization of porphyrin sensitizers optimized through introducing a bis( ortho-alkoxy)-wrapped phenyl group into the phenothiazine donor and/or methyl groups into the benzoic acid acceptor unit.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic azomethine ylides (PAMYs) are powerful building blocks in the bottom-up synthesis of internally nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (N-PAHs) through 1,3-cycloaddition reactions. In this work, the cycloaddition reaction of PAMYs to asymmetric ortho-quinones is presented, which, in contrast to the addition to symmetric para-quinones, facilitates subsequent condensation reactions and allows the synthesis of three helical N-PAHs with ullazine-quinoxaline (UQ-1-3) backbones. UQ-1 and UQ-2 possess two helical centers; however, single-crystal X-ray analysis together with the computational modeling of UQ-3 elucidate the formation of only the thermodynamically most stable geometry with four helical centers in a (P,P,M,M) configuration. For the series UQ-1-3, the number of redox steps is directly correlated with the number of ullazine or quinoxaline units incorporated into the targeted molecular backbones. A detailed investigation of the spectroscopic and magnetic properties of the radical cation and anion as well as the dication and dianion species by in situ EPR/UV/Vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry is provided. The excellent optical and redox properties combined with helical geometries render them possibly applicable as chiral emitter or ambipolar charge transport material in organic electronics.

Abstract
In this work, we have synthesized a novel porphyrin dye named SK7, which contains two N, N-diarylamino moieties at two β-positions as electron-donating units and one carboxy phenylethynyl moiety at the meso-position as an electron-withdrawing, anchoring group. This novel dye was tested for the application in dye-sensitized solar cells. The light-harvesting behavior of SK7 and YD2 was investigated using UV-vis absorption and density functional calculation. The electron transport properties at the TiO2/dye/electrolyte interface for SK7- and YD2-based devices were evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. X-ray crystallographic characterization was conducted to understand the influence of two N, N-diarylamino units at two β-positions. The power conversion efficiencies of ca. 6.54% under 1 sun illumination (AM 1.5G) and ca. 19.72% under a T5 light source were noted for the SK7 dye. The performance of SK7 is comparable to that of dye YD2, which contains only one N, N-diarylamino moiety at the meso-position (ca. 7.78 and 20.00% under 1 sun and T5 light, respectively).

Abstract
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) continue to attract interest due to their lower cost production compared to silicon based solar cells and their improving power conversion efficiencies. Porphyrin-based sensitizers have become an important sub-class due to their strong absorption characteristics in the visible region, convenient modulation of properties through synthetic manipulation and class-leading power conversion efficiencies. In this article, we report the synthesis and characterization of two porphyrin-based dyes and their application as sensitizers in DSSCs. A thiophene and a furan moiety have been incorporated into the push-pull architecture as a π-bridge, allowing the systematic investigation of how these moieties influence the physical properties of the dyes and the performance of their resulting DSSCs. A significant difference in PCEs has been observed, with the furan containing dye (PorF, PCE = 4.5%) being more efficient than the thiophene-based analogue (PorT, PCE = 3.6%) in conjunction with the iodide/triiodide redox electrolyte.

Abstract
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) are a promising source of renewable energy. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of devices has been limited largely by the difficulty of producing electricity using photons from the near-infrared (NIR) spectral region. Metal-free organic sensitizers frequently employ strong electron-donating or -withdrawing moieties to tune the optical band gap to allow the absorption of lower energy wavelengths in charge-transfer systems, whereas porphyrins and phthalocyanines use substituents to shift the Soret and Q bands toward lower energy absorption. Very few devices employing precious metal-free dyes have achieved panchromatic and NIR photon conversion for electricity generation at wavelengths >750 nm despite a tremendous number of sensitizers published over the last 25 years. This Minireview seeks to compile a summary of these sensitizers to encourage assimilation, analysis, and development of efficient future sensitizers with absorption extending into the NIR. Herein, we discuss common synthetic strategies, optical properties, and electronic properties of the most successful panchromatic organic sensitizers.

Abstract
A hydroxamic acid group has been employed for the first time as an anchoring group for cobalt-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The porphyrin dye YD2-o-C8HA including a hydroxamic acid anchoring group exhibited a power conversion efficiency (η) of 6.4 %, which is close to that of YD2-o-C8, a representative porphyrin dye incorporating a conventional carboxylic acid. More importantly, YD2-o-C8HA was found to be superior to YD2-o-C8 in terms of both binding ability to TiO2 and durability of cobalt-based DSSCs. Notably, YD2-o-C8HA photocells revealed a higher η-value (4.1 %) than YD2-o-C8 (2.8 %) after 500 h illumination. These results suggest that the hydroxamic acid can be used for DSSCs with other transition-metal-based redox shuttle to ensure high cell durability as well as excellent photovoltaic performance.

Abstract
Squaraine dyes are promising chromophores to harvest visible and near-infrared (NIR) photons. A series of indoline-based unsymmetrical squaraine (SQ) dyes that contain alkyl chains at sp3 C- and N- atoms of indoline moieties with a carboxylic acid anchoring group were synthesized. The optical and electrochemical properties of the SQ dyes in solution were nearly identical as there was no change in the D-A-D SQ framework; however, remarkable changes with respect to the power conversion efficiencies (PCE) were observed depending upon the position of alkyl groups in the dye. Introduction of alkyl groups to the indoline unit that was away from anchoring unit were helped in more dye loading with controlled organization of dyes on surface, increased charge transfer resistance, long electron lifetime, and hence higher PCE than that of the corresponding isomer in which the alkyl groups funtionalized indoline unit contains the carboxylic acid anchoring group. Careful analysis of incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) profiles indicated the presence of aggregated structure on the TiO2 surface that contributes to the charge injection in the presence of a coadsorbent. A dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) device made out of SQ5 was achieved an efficiency of 9.0%, with an open-circuit potential (Voc) of 660 mV and short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 19.82 mA/cm2, under simulated AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW/cm2). The IPCE profile of SQ5 shows an onset near to 750 nm with a good quantum efficiency (>80%) in the range of 550-700 nm, indicating the importance of self-organization of dyes on the TiO2 surface for an efficient charge injection. This present investigation revealed the importance of position of alkyl groups in the squaraine-based dyes for the better PCE.

The sensitization of nanosheets is carried out with Zn protoporphyrin IX (ZnPPIX). The emission intensity of ZnPPIX is quenched by NaTiO2 NS, and the dominant process for this quenching has been attributed to the process of photoinduced electron injection from excited ZnPPIX to the nanosheets. Time resolved fluorescence measurement was used to elucidate the process of electron injection from the singlet state of ZnPPIX to the conduction band of NaTiO2 NS. Electron injection from the dye to the semiconductor is very fast (ket ≈ 10(11) s(-1)), much faster than previously reported rates. The large two-dimensional surface offered by the NaTiO2 NS for interaction with the dye and the favorable driving force for electron injection from ZnPPIX to NaTiO2 NS (ΔGinj = -0.66 V) are the two important factors responsible for such efficient electron injection. Thus, NaTiO2 NS can serve as an effective alternative to the use of TiO2 nanoparticles in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).
