Polymerization of Monomeric Ionic Liquid Confined within Uniaxial Alumina Pores as a New Way of Obtaining Materials with Enhanced Conductivity

Construction of poly (ionic liquid)-derived gold/silver alloy@nitrogen-doped carbon shell and its application for ratiometric electrochemical detection of nitric oxide

A nitrogen-doped carbon shell loaded with a gold and silver alloy (Au/Ag@NCS) was constructed for highly sensitive electrochemical detection of NO. The Au/Ag@NCS material was prepared by use of SiO2 particles as a template to polymerize imidazolium-based ionic liquids loaded with gold and silver salts, and subsequent carbonization treatment and template removal. The hollow structure of the carbon material acted as a carrier for electrochemical sensing, offering high specific surface area, large pore capacity, robust electron conductivity, and excellent mechanical stability. The inclusion of gold in the composite enhanced its catalytic and sensing capabilities, while silver oxidation was employed as a reference signal for accurate detection. By utilization of the Au/Ag@NCS-modified electrode, a wide detection range from 0.5 nM to 1.05 μM with a low detection limit of 0.32 nM was achieved for NO detection. The electrochemical sensor also exhibited high selectivity and excellent stability. The fabricated sensor was further utilized to explore the release of NO from breast cancer cells, revealing that the electrochemical platform could be regarded as an important method to study the daily tests of NO in clinical application.

Polymerization within Nanoporous Anodized Alumina Oxide Templates (AAO): A Critical Survey

In the last few years, the polymerization of monomers within the nanocavities of porous materials has been thoroughly studied and developed, allowing for the synthesis of polymers with tailored morphologies, chemical architectures and functionalities. This is thus a subject of paramount scientific and technological relevance, which, however, has not previously been analyzed from a general perspective. The present overview reports the state of the art on polymerization reactions in spatial confinement within porous materials, focusing on the use of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. It includes the description of the AAO templates used as nanoreactors. The polymerization reactions are categorized based on the polymerization mechanism. Amongst others, this includes electrochemical polymerization, free radical polymerization, step polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). For each polymerization mechanism, a further subdivision is made based on the nature of the monomer used. Other aspects of "in situ" polymerization reactions in restricted AAO geometries include: conversion monitoring, kinetic studies, modeling and polymer characterization. In addition to the description of the polymerization process itself, the use of polymer materials derived from polymerization in AAO templates in nanotechnology applications, is also highlighted. Finally, the review is concluded with a general discussion outlining the challenges that remain in the field.

Recent advances in poly(ionic liquid)s for biomedical application

Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) are polymers containing ions in their side-chain or backbone, and the designability and outstanding physicochemical properties of PILs have attracted widespread attention from researchers. PILs have specific characteristics, including negligible vapor pressure, high thermal and chemical stability, non-flammability, and self-assembly capabilities. PILs can be well combined with advanced analytical instruments and technology and have made outstanding contributions to the development of biomedicine aiding in the continuous advancement of science and technology. Here we reviewed the advances of PILs in the biomedical field in the past five years with a focus on applications in proteomics, drug delivery, and development. This paper aims to engage pharmaceutical and biomedical scientists to full understand PILs and accelerate the progress from laboratory research to industrialization.

Inorganic reinforced poly(ionic liquid) microcapsules: confined cooling-assisted phase separation self-assembly and enhanced electro-responsive property

We report a simple preparation of inorganic reinforced poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) microcapsules by combining dispersion polymerization and confined cooling-assisted phase separation self-assembly. Silane coupling agent-modified PIL microbeads were first prepared by dispersion polymerization. Then, the microbeads were dissolved in a mixed solvent composed of good solvent and non-solvent to form hollow SiO_x microcapsules at a relatively high temperature. Finally, the solution was cooled to induce the nucleation and growth of dissolved PIL chains on the inner and outer surface of hollow SiO_x microcapsules to form inorganic reinforced microcapsules with asymmetric PIL/SiO_x /PIL sandwich-like shell. The morphology of microcapsules can be controlled by adjusting PIL concentration and cooling rate. The inorganic reinforced microcapsules show enhanced suspended stability and electro-responsive characteristic when used as the dispersed phase of smart suspensions. Hard confinement systems as effective nanoreactors for in situ photo-RAFT: towards control over molecular weight distribution and morphology

Herein an alternative strategy to tune polymer dispersity and morphology was developed for photoiniferter-mediated RAFT giving well-defined ionic and non-ionic nanomaterials.

Nanoconfined Crosslinked Poly(ionic liquid)s with Unprecedented Selective Swelling Properties Obtained by Alkylation in Nanophase-Separated Poly(1-vinylimidazole)-l-poly(tetrahydrofuran) Conetworks

Despite the great interest in nanoconfined materials nowadays, nanocompartmentalized poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) have been rarely investigated so far. Herein, we report on the successful alkylation of poly(1-vinylimidazole) with methyl iodide in bicontinuous nanophasic poly(1-vinylimidazole)-l-poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PVIm-l-PTHF) amphiphilic conetworks (APCNs) to obtain nanoconfined methylated PVImMe-l-PTHF poly(ionic liquid) conetworks (PIL-CNs). A high extent of alkylation (~95%) was achieved via a simple alkylation process with MeI at room temperature. This does not destroy the bicontinuous nanophasic morphology as proved by SAXS and AFM, and PIL-CNs with 15-20 nm d-spacing and poly(3-methyl-1-vinylimidazolium iodide) PIL nanophases with average domain sizes of 8.2-8.4 nm are formed. Unexpectedly, while the swelling capacity of the PIL-CN dramatically increases in aprotic polar solvents, such as DMF, NMP, and DMSO, reaching higher than 1000% superabsorbent swelling degrees, the equilibrium swelling degrees decrease in even highly polar protic (hydrophilic) solvents, like water and methanol. An unprecedented Gaussian-type relationship was found between the ratios of the swelling degrees versus the polarity index, indicating increased swelling for the nanoconfined PVImMe-l-PTHF PIL-CNs in solvents with a polarity index between ~6 and 9.5. In addition to the nanoconfined structural features, the unique selective superabsorbent swelling behavior of the PIL-CNs can also be utilized in various application fields.

Ion Dynamics of Monomeric Ionic Liquids Polymerized In Situ within Silica Nanopores

Polymerized ionic liquids are a promising class of versatile solid-state electrolytes for applications ranging from electrochemical energy storage to flexible smart materials that remain limited by their relatively low ionic conductivities compared to conventional electrolytes. Here, we show that the in situ polymerization of the vinyl cationic monomer, 1-ethyl-3-vinylimidazolium with the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide counteranion, under nanoconfinement within 7.5 ± 1.0 nm diameter nanopores results in a nearly 1000-fold enhancement in the ionic conductivity compared to the material polymerized in bulk. Using insights from broadband dielectric and Raman spectroscopic techniques, we attribute these results to the role of confinement on molecular conformations, ion coordination, and subsequently the ionic conductivity in the polymerized ionic liquid. These results contribute to the understanding of the dynamics of nanoconfined molecules and show that in situ polymerization under nanoscale geometric confinement is a promising path toward enhancing ion conductivity in polymer electrolytes.

The application of spatially restricted geometries as a unique route to produce well-defined poly(vinyl pyrrolidones) via free radical polymerisation

We report, for the first time, the metal-free green synthesis of linear poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) homopolymers of molecular weight higher than 100 kg mol-1 and narrow dispersities via thermal and photo-induced free radical polymerisation carried out within alumina nanoporous membranes acting as "nanoreactors".

High-Charge Density Polymerized Ionic Networks Boosting High Ionic Conductivity as Quasi-Solid Electrolytes for High-Voltage Batteries

Solid-state electrolytes are actively sought for their potential application in energy storage devices, especially lithium metal rechargeable batteries. However, one of the key challenges in the development of solid-state electrolytes is their lower ionic conductivity compared with that of liquid electrolytes (10^-2 S cm^-1 at room temperature), where a large gap still exists. Therefore, the pursuit of high ionic conductivity equal to that of liquid electrolytes remains the main objective for the design of solid-state electrolytes. Here, we show a series of high-charge density polymerized ionic networks as solid-state electrolytes that take inspiration from poly(ionic liquid)s. The obtained quasi-solid electrolyte slice displays an astonishingly high ionic conductivity of 5.89 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 at 25 °C (the highest conductivity among those of the state-of-art polymer gel electrolytes and polymer solid electrolytes) and ultrahigh decomposition potential, >5.2 V versus Li/Li⁺, which are attributed to the continuous ion transport channel formed by an ultrahigh ion density and an enhanced chemical stability endowed by highly cross-linked networks. The Li/LiFePO₄ and Li/LiCoO₂ batteries (3.0-4.4 V) assembled with the solid electrolytes show high stable capacities of around 155 and 130 mAh g^-1, respectively. In principle, our work breaks new ground for the design and fabrication of the solid-state electrolytes in various energy conversion devices.

Enhancing Electroresponsive Electrorheological Effect and Temperature Dependence of Poly(ionic liquid) Particles by Hard Core Confinement

Monodisperse core-shell-structured SiO₂@poly(ionic liquid) (SiO₂@PIL) particles are prepared by the polymerization of ionic liquid monomer on the surface of methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane-modified SiO₂ particles. The electroresponsive electrorheological (ER) effect of SiO₂@PIL particles when dispersed in insulating carrier liquid is investigated and compared with that of pure poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) particles based on temperature-modulated rheology under electric fields. It is demonstrated that hard SiO₂ core not only enhances the ER effect of PIL particles but also improves the temperature dependence of ER effect. By dielectric spectroscopy analysis, the mechanism behind the property enhancement was discussed. It indicates that the hard SiO₂ core can not only increase the interfacial polarization strength of SiO₂@PIL particles by core-shell architecture but also restrain the segment relaxation or softening of the PIL shell and influence the ion dynamics above the calorimetric glass transition of PILs by the so called "substrate confinement effect", and this should be responsible for the enhanced electroresponsive ER effect and temperature stability of the SiO₂@PIL particles.
