Patterned membranes for improving hydrodynamic properties and mitigating membrane fouling in water treatment: A review

Membrane technologies have been widely applied in water treatment over the past few decades. However, membrane fouling remains a hinderance for the widespread use of membrane processes because it decreases effluent quality and increases operating costs. To mitigate membrane fouling, researchers have been exploring effective anti-fouling strategies. Recently, patterned membranes are gaining attention as a novel non-chemical membrane modification for membrane fouling control. In this paper, we review the research on patterned membranes used in water treatment over the past 20 years. In general, patterned membranes show superior anti-fouling performances, which mainly results from two aspects: hydrodynamic effects and interaction effects. Due to the introduction of diversified topographies onto the membrane surface, patterned membranes yield dramatic improvements on hydrodynamic properties, e.g., shear stress, velocity field and local turbulence, restraining concentration polarization and foulants' deposition on the membrane surface. Besides, the membrane-foulant and foulant-foulant interactions play an important role in the mitigation of membrane fouling. Due to the existence of surface patterns, the hydrodynamic boundary layer is destroyed and the interaction force as well as the contact area between foulants and surface are decreased, which contributes to the fouling suppression. However, there are still some limitations in the research and application of patterned membranes. Future research is suggested to focus on the development of patterned membranes appropriate for different water treatment scenarios, the insights into the interaction forces affected by surface patterns, and the pilot-scale and long-term studies to verify the anti-fouling performances of patterned membranes in practical applications.

Tailoring properties and performance of thin-film composite membranes by salt additives for water treatment: A critical review

During the fabrication of thin film composite (TFC) membranes by interfacial polymerization (IP), the utilization of salt additives is one of the effective methods to regulate membrane properties and performance. Despite gradually receiving widespread attention for membrane preparation, the strategies, effects and underlying mechanisms of using salt additives have not yet been systematically summarized. This review for the first time provides an overview of various salt additives used to tailor properties and performance of TFC membranes for water treatment. By classifying salt additives into organic and inorganic salts, the roles of added salt additives in the IP process and the induced changes in membrane structure and properties are discussed in detail, and the different mechanisms of salt additives affecting membrane formation are summarized. Based on these mechanisms, the salt-based regulation strategies have shown great potential for improving the performance and application competitiveness of TFC membranes, including overcoming the trade-off relationship between water permeability and salt selectivity, tailoring membrane pore size distribution for precise solute-solute separation, and enhancing membrane antifouling performance. Finally, future research directions are suggested to focus on the long-term stability assessment of salt-modified membranes, the combined use of different salt additives, and the integration of salt regulation with other membrane design or modification strategies.

Modeling of Organic Fouling in an Ultrafiltration Cell Using Different Three-Dimensional Printed Turbulence Promoters

Designing turbulence promoters with optimal geometry and using them for ultrafiltration systems has been a key challenge in mitigating membrane fouling. In this study, six different turbulence promoters were created using three-dimensional printing technology and applied in dead-end ultrafiltration. Three-dimensional-printed (3DP) turbulence promoter configurations were integrated into a classical batch ultrafiltration cell. The effects of these configurations and the stirring speeds on the permeate filtration flux, organic rejections, and membrane resistances were investigated. The fouling control efficiency of the 3DP promoters was evaluated using two polyethersulfone membranes in a stirred ultrafiltration cell with model dairy wastewater. The Hermia and resistance-in-series models were studied to further investigate the membrane fouling mechanism. Of the Hermia models, the cake layer model best described the fouling in this membrane filtration system. It can be concluded that the 3DP turbulence promoters, combined with intense mechanical stirring, show great promise in terms of permeate flux enhancement and membrane fouling mitigation. Using a well-designed 3DP turbulence promoter improves the hydrodynamic flow conditions on the surface of the stirred membrane separation cells based on computational fluid dynamics modeling. Therefore, the factors effecting the fabrication of 3DP turbulence promoters are important, and further research should be devoted to revealing them.

Designing sustainable membrane-based water treatment via fouling control through membrane interface engineering and process developments

Membrane-based water treatment processes have been established as a powerful approach for clean water production. However, despite the significant advances made in terms of rejection and flux, provision of sustainable and energy-efficient water production is restricted by the inevitable issue of membrane fouling, known to be the major contributor to the elevated operating costs due to frequent chemical cleaning, increased transmembrane resistance, and deterioration of permeate flux. This review provides an overview of fouling control strategies in different membrane processes, such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, membrane bioreactors, and desalination via reverse osmosis and forward osmosis. Insights into the recent advancements are discussed and efforts made in terms of membrane development, modules arrangement, process optimization, feed pretreatment, and fouling monitoring are highlighted to evaluate their overall impact in energy- and cost-effective water treatment. Major findings in four key aspects are presented, including membrane surface modification, modules design, process integration, and fouling monitoring. Among the above mentioned anti-fouling strategies, a large part of research has been focused on membrane surface modifications using a number of anti-fouling materials whereas much less research has been devoted to membrane module advancements and in-situ fouling monitoring and control. At the end, a critical analysis is provided for each anti-fouling strategy and a rationale framework is provided for design of efficient membranes and process for water treatment.

Antibacterial Adhesion Strategy for Dental Titanium Implant Surfaces: From Mechanisms to Application

Dental implants are widely used to restore missing teeth because of their stability and comfort characteristics. Peri-implant infection may lead to implant failure and other profound consequences. It is believed that peri-implantitis is closely related to the formation of biofilms, which are difficult to remove once formed. Therefore, endowing titanium implants with anti-adhesion properties is an effective method to prevent peri-implant infection. Moreover, anti-adhesion strategies for titanium implant surfaces are critical steps for resisting bacterial adherence. This article reviews the process of bacterial adhesion, the material properties that may affect the process, and the anti-adhesion strategies that have been proven effective and promising in practice. This article intends to be a reference for further improvement of the antibacterial adhesion strategy in clinical application and for related research on titanium implant surfaces.

Combining Topography and Chemistry to Produce Antibiofouling Surfaces: A Review

Despite decades of research on the reduction of surface fouling from biomolecules or micro-organisms, the ultimate antibiofouling surface remains undiscovered. The recent covid-19 pandemic strengthened the crucial need for such treatments. Among the numerous approaches that are able to provide surfaces with antibiofouling properties, chemical, biological, and topographical strategies have been implemented for instance in the marine, medical, or food industries. However, many of these methods have a biocidal effect and, with antibioresistance and biocide resistance a growing threat on humanity, strategies based on reducing adsorption of biomolecules and micro-organism are necessary for long-term solutions. Bioinspired strategies, combining both surface chemistry and topography, are currently at the heart of the best innovative and sustainable solutions. The synergistic effect of micro/nanostructuration, together with engineered chemical or biological functionalization is believed to contribute to the development of antibiofouling surfaces. This review aims to present approaches combining hydrophobic or hydrophilic chemistries with a specific topography to avoid biofouling in various industrial environments and healthcare facilities.

Nanofiltration Membranes with Crumpled Polyamide Films: A Critical Review on Mechanisms, Performances, and Environmental Applications

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes have been widely applied in many important environmental applications, including water softening, surface/groundwater purification, wastewater treatment, and water reuse. In recent years, a new class of piperazine (PIP)-based NF membranes featuring a crumpled polyamide layer has received considerable attention because of their great potential for achieving dramatic improvements in membrane separation performance. Since the report of novel crumpled Turing structures that exhibited an order of magnitude enhancement in water permeance ( Science 2018, 360 (6388), 518-521), the number of published research papers on this emerging topic has grown exponentially to approximately 200. In this critical review, we provide a systematic framework to classify the crumpled NF morphologies. The fundamental mechanisms and fabrication methods involved in the formation of these crumpled morphologies are summarized. We then discuss the transport of water and solutes in crumpled NF membranes and how these transport phenomena could simultaneously improve membrane water permeance, selectivity, and antifouling performance. The environmental applications of these emerging NF membranes are highlighted, and future research opportunities/needs are identified. The fundamental insights in this review provide critical guidance on the further development of high-performance NF membranes tailored for a wide range of environmental applications.

Surface characterization of thin-film composite membranes using contact angle technique: Review of quantification strategies and applications

Thin-film composite (TFC) membranes are the most widely used membranes for low-cost and energy-efficient water desalination processes. Proper control over the three influential surface parameters, namely wettability, roughness, and surface charge, is vital in optimizing the TFC membrane surface and permeation properties. More specifically, the surface properties of TFC membranes are often tailored by incorporating novel special wettability materials to increase hydrophilicity and tune surface physicochemical heterogeneity. These essential parameters affect the membrane permeability and antifouling properties. The membrane surface characterization protocols employed to date are rather controversial, and there is no general agreement about the metrics used to evaluate the surface hydrophilicity and physicochemical heterogeneity. In this review, we surveyed and critically evaluated the process that emerged for understanding the membrane surface properties using the simple and economical contact angle analysis technique. Contact angle analysis allows the estimation of surface wettability, surface free energy, surface charge, oleophobicity, contact angle hysteresis, and free energy of interaction; all coordinatively influence the membrane permeation and fouling properties. This review will provide insights into simplifying the evaluation of membrane properties by contact angle analysis that will ultimately expedite the membrane development process by reducing the time and expenses required for the characterization to confirm the success and the impact of any modification.

Surface Design for Antibacterial Materials: From Fundamentals to Advanced Strategies

Healthcare-acquired infections as well as increasing antimicrobial resistance have become an urgent global challenge, thus smart alternative solutions are needed to tackle bacterial infections. Antibacterial materials in biomedical applications and hospital hygiene have attracted great interest, in particular, the emergence of surface design strategies offer an effective alternative to antibiotics, thereby preventing the possible development of bacterial resistance. In this review, recent progress on advanced surface modifications to prevent bacterial infections are addressed comprehensively, starting with the key factors against bacterial adhesion, followed by varying strategies that can inhibit biofilm formation effectively. Furthermore, "super antibacterial systems" through pre-treatment defense and targeted bactericidal system, are proposed with increasing evidence of clinical potential. Finally, the advantages and future challenges of surface strategies to resist healthcare-associated infections are discussed, with promising prospects of developing novel antimicrobial materials.

Macropatterning of Microcrumpled Nanofiltration Membranes by Spacer Imprinting for Low-Scaling Desalination

Surface patterns provide a chemical-free approach to reduce fouling by mimicking nature and are yet limited by their complicated fabrication procedures. Here, we report readily scalable methods to create sub-micrometer- and millimeter-scale patterns on membrane surfaces for low-scaling desalination, with a focus on the antiscaling mechanism. Specifically, a robust polyethylene (PE) lithium battery separator prepared from melt casting and stretching has been used as the support for nanofiltration (NF), giving micrometer-scale crumples on the surface. Then, the PENF membrane is imprinted by a permeate spacer during tests, leading to millimeter-scale patterns. Two types of experiments are designed to give insights into the impact of surface structure on scaling in NF processes, including (1) comparisons of smooth surfaces and surfaces with nanometer-, micrometer-, and millimeter-scale features and (2) no-stirring dead-end tests and crossflow tests. It has been found that micrometer-scale patterns are resistant to scaling through both spatial and hydrodynamic effects, and millimeter-scale patterns are also effective in reducing scaling solely due to hydrodynamic effects. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation gives further explanations. In addition, organic and microbial fouling has been studied to give implications for future membrane engineering.

Micro-patterned membranes prepared via modified phase inversion: Effect of modified interface on water fluxes and organic fouling

The introduction of patterns on a membrane-solute interface has been suggested as an effective method to tackle the reduced flux and fouling issues. Herein, the effectiveness of using spray-modified non-solvent induced phase separation (s-NIPS) to create a variety of micrometer-level structured interfaces is now studied. Circular, triangular and rectangular patterns with different dimensions were successfully created on polyacrylonitrile membranes. The rectangular pattern height was varied from 500 to 1500 µm, which resulted in a proportional increase in clean water permeance from 590 ± 47 L m^-2 h^-1 bar^-1 to 1345 ± 108 L m^-2 h^-1 bar^-1 respectively. This coincided with some BSA rejection loss for the highest patterns, indicating the fragile nature of these tall features. No significant rejection losses were found for the smaller pattern heights (145-250 µm) as compared to flat membranes, while fluxes more than doubled still. The critical pressure was also increased substantially for patterned membranes and showed a proportionality with the pattern height. These experimental findings were correlated with the reduced foulant adhesion due to a shear-induced slip boundary layer at the membrane-solution interface. Computational fluid dynamics simulations further showed higher shear stress values due to flow constriction within the membrane's valley regions. These findings indicate the high potential of s-NIPS patterned membranes in long-term industrial applications by requiring less membrane area for a given application and reducing cleaning interventions.

Membrane Surface Patterning as a Fouling Mitigation Strategy in Liquid Filtration: A Review

Membrane fouling is seen as the main culprit that hinders the widespread of membrane application in liquid-based filtration. Therefore, fouling management is key for the successful implementation of membrane processes, and it is done across all magnitudes. For optimum operation, membrane developments and surface modifications have largely been reported, including membrane surface patterning. Membrane surface patterning involves structural modification of the membrane surface to induce secondary flow due to eddies, which mitigate foulant agglomeration and increase the effective surface area for improved permeance and antifouling properties. This paper reviews surface patterning approaches used for fouling mitigation in water and wastewater treatments. The focus is given on the pattern formation methods and their effect on overall process performances.

Profiled Ion Exchange Membranes: A Comprehensible Review

Profiled membranes (also known as corrugated membranes, micro-structured membranes, patterned membranes, membranes with designed topography or notched membranes) are gaining increasing academic and industrial attention and recognition as a viable alternative to flat membranes. So far, profiled ion exchange membranes have shown to significantly improve the performance of reverse electrodialysis (RED), and particularly, electrodialysis (ED) by eliminating the spacer shadow effect and by inducing hydrodynamic changes, leading to ion transport rate enhancement. The beneficial effects of profiled ion exchange membranes are strongly dependent on the shape of their profiles (corrugations/patterns) as well as on the flow rate and salts’ concentration in the feed streams. The enormous degree of freedom to create new profile geometries offers an exciting opportunity to improve even more their performance. Additionally, the advent of new manufacturing methods in the membrane field, such as 3D printing, is anticipated to allow a faster and an easier way to create profiled membranes with different and complex geometries.

Multifunctional Coatings and Nanotopographies: Toward Cell Instructive and Antibacterial Implants

In biomaterials science, it is nowadays well accepted that improving the biointegration of dental and orthopedic implants with surrounding tissues is a major goal. However, implant surfaces that support osteointegration may also favor colonization of bacterial cells. Infection of biomaterials and subsequent biofilm formation can have devastating effects and reduce patient quality of life, representing an emerging concern in healthcare. Conversely, efforts toward inhibiting bacterial colonization may impair biomaterial-tissue integration. Therefore, to improve the long-term success of medical implants, biomaterial surfaces should ideally discourage the attachment of bacteria without affecting eukaryotic cell functions. However, most current strategies seldom investigate a combined goal. This work reviews recent strategies of surface modification to simultaneously address implant biointegration while mitigating bacterial infections. To this end, two emerging solutions are considered, multifunctional chemical coatings and nanotopographical features.

Excellent Biofouling Alleviation of Thermoexfoliated Vermiculite Blended Poly(ether sulfone) Ultrafiltration Membrane

Flux and antifouling properties of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are yet to attain satisfactory status. The objective of this study is to find a method for mitigating the biofouling of poly(ether sulfone) (PES) ultrafiltration membranes via blending of thermoexfoliated vermiculite (VMT). Flow cytometry analysis shows that the behaviors of Bacillus subtilis 168 as a Gram-positive bacterium and Escherichia coli DH5 alpha as a Gram-negative bacterium were different. Hence, cell property is a suspected contributory factor in biofilm formation. Accordingly, considering the local predominant bacterial strains, a regionally customized membrane could scientifically be an expert solution for biofouling mitigation. Fabricated composite membranes have shown a higher flux compared to control PES membrane. Among all composite membranes, the PES-VMT0.10 had the highest flux of 476.4 L/(m² h) (LMH) before fouling, and the highest flux of 210.7 LMH after three cycles of usage. In addition, the rejection rate of the PES-VMT0.15 The bovine serum albumin (BSA) sample was >77%, while that of the PES-VMT0.10 was >84%. The results of the static BSA adsorption test and the bacterial attachment test indicated that the membranes with macro-roughness on their surface showed better antibiofouling resistance. The antifouling properties of the modified membranes were also improved, because of their optimal wettability. On one hand, the hydrophilicity of membranes caused damaging both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and bacteriocidal effect. On the other hand, BSA adsorption and bacterial attachment on the membrane surface were affected by pore diameter.

Formation of a Crack-Free, Hybrid Skin Layer with Tunable Surface Topography and Improved Gas Permeation Selectivity on Elastomers Using Gel-Liquid Infiltration Polymerization

Surface modifications of elastomers and gels are crucial for emerging applications such as soft robotics and flexible electronics, in large part because they provide a platform to control wettability, adhesion, and permeability. Current surface modification methods via ultraviolet-ozone (UVO) and/or O₂ plasma, atomic layer deposition (ALD), plasmas deposition, and chemical treatment impart a dense polymer or inorganic layer on the surface that is brittle and easy to fracture at low strain levels. This paper presents a new method, based on gel-liquid infiltration polymerization, to form hybrid skin layers atop elastomers. The method is unique in that it allows for control of the skin layer topography, with tunable feature sizes and aspect ratios as high as 1.8 without fracture. Unlike previous techniques, the skin layer formed here dramatically improves the barrier properties of the elastomer, while preserving skin layer flexibility. Moreover, the method is versatile and likely applicable to most interfacial polymerization systems and network polymers on flat and patterned surfaces.
