Robust Strategy for Crafting Li5Cr7Ti6O25@CeO2 Composites as High-Performance Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Battery

One-Dimensional Croconate-Based Fe-CP as a High-Performance Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Coordination polymers (CPs) have attracted greater scientific attention as promising electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their diverse and versatile structural chemistry. This study introduces a croconate-based one-dimensional CP, namely [Fe(C5O5)(H2O)3]n) (referred to as Fe-CP), as an efficient anode material with high-performance characteristics for rechargeable LIBs. The ligand with abundant redox sites coordinating to the transition metal ion endowed the anode material with a remarkable stability in the electrolyte, in addition to high capacity, high-rate capability, and high cycling performance during charging/discharging process. The Fe-CP has a unique chain-based supramolecular structure, setting it apart from other porous three-dimensional molecular materials. The presence of unrestricted channels between the chains facilitates the diffusion of lithium ions in this unique structure. When tested at 100 mA g-1 over a range of voltages between 0.01 and 2.4 V, the Fe-CP anode demonstrated a noteworthy specific capacity of 521 mA h g-1 over 140 cycles. Moreover, the Fe-CP anode material exhibited excellent rate performance and demonstrated favorable cyclability. Following exposure to high charging and discharging rates of 2 A g-1, the anode ultimately regained its initial capability when the current rate was back at 100 mA g-1.

Engineered defects in cerium oxides: tuning chemical reactivity for biomedical, environmental, & energy applications

Nanocrystalline cerium oxide (nanoceria) is a rare earth oxide with a complex surface chemistry. This material has seen substantial investigation in recent years in both fundamental and applied studies due largely to more precise characterization of the unique surface structures, which mediate its pronounced redox activity. In particular, oxygen storage/buffering capacities have been thoroughly correlated with synthesis and processing condition effects on other material features such as surface (micro-) faceting, reconstruction, and (extent of) hydration. Key material features such as these modulate nanoceria redox performance by changing the crystal microenvironment. In this review, we present nanoengineering methods, which have produced increased nanoceria performance in biomedical, energy, and catalysis applications. The impact of combined/cooperative theoretical and experimental studies are highlighted throughout.

Hollow Micro/Nanostructured Ceria-Based Materials: Synthetic Strategies and Versatile Applications

Hollow micro/nanostructured CeO₂ -based materials (HMNCMs) have triggered intensive attention as a result of their unique structural traits, which arise from their hollowness and the fascinating physicochemical properties of CeO₂ . This attention has led to widespread applications with improved performance. Herein, a comprehensive overview of methodologies applied for the synthesis of various hollow structures, such as hollow spheres, nanotubes, nanoboxes, and multishelled hollow spheres, is provided. The synthetic strategies toward CeO₂ hollow structures are classified into three major categories: 1) well-established template-assisted (hard-, soft-, and in situ template) methods; 2) newly emerging self-template approaches, including selective etching, Ostwald ripening, the Kirkendall effect, galvanic replacement, etc.; 3) bottom-up self-organized formation synthesis (namely, oriented attachment and self-deformation). Their underlying mechanisms are concisely described and discussed in detail, the differences and similarities of which are compared transversely and longitudinally. Niche applications of HMNCMs in a wide range of fields including catalysis, energy conversion and storage, sensors, absorbents, photoluminescence, and biomedicines are reviewed. Finally, an outlook of future opportunities and challenges in the synthesis and application of CeO₂ -based hollow structures is also presented.

CeO2-modified P2-Na-Co-Mn-O cathode with enhanced sodium storage characteristics

To improve the cycling stability and dynamic properties of layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries, surface modified P2-Na_0.67Co_0.25Mn_0.75O₂ with different levels of CeO₂ was successfully synthesized by the solid-state method. X-ray photoelectron spectra, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra show that the P2-structure and the oxidation state of cobalt and manganese of the pristine oxide are not affected by CeO₂ surface modification, and a small amount of Ce⁴⁺ ions have been reduced to Ce³⁺ ions, and a few Ce ions have entered the crystal lattice of the P2-oxide surface during modification with CeO₂. In a voltage range of 2.0-4.0 V at a current density of 20 mA g^-1, 2.00 wt% CeO₂-modified Na_0.67Co_0.25Mn_0.75O₂ delivers a maximum discharge capacity of 135.93 mA h g^-1, and the capacity retentions are 91.96% and 83.38% after 50 and 100 cycles, respectively. However, the pristine oxide presents a low discharge capacity of 116.14 mA h g^-1, and very low retentions of 39.83% and 25.96% after 50 and 100 cycles, respectively. It is suggested that the CeO₂ modification enhances not only the maximum discharge capacity, but also the electric conductivity and the sodium ion diffusivity, resulting in a significant enhancement of the cycling stability and the kinetic characteristics of the P2-type oxide cathode.

Plasma-Induced Oxygen Vacancies in Urchin-Like Anatase Titania Coated by Carbon for Excellent Sodium-Ion Battery Anodes

The incorporation of oxygen vacancies in anatase TiO₂ has been studied as a promising way to accelerate the transport of electrons and Na⁺ ions, which is important for achieving excellent electrochemical properties for anatase TiO₂. However, wittingly introducing oxygen vacancies in anatase TiO₂ for sodium-ion anodes by a facile and effective method is still a challenge. In this work, we report an innovative method to introduce oxygen vacancies into the urchin-like N-doped carbon coated anatase TiO₂ (NC-DTO) by a facile plasma treatment. The superiorities of the oxygen vacancies combined with the conductive N-doped carbon coating enable the obtained NC-DTO of greatly improved sodium storage performance. When served as the anode for sodium-ion batteries, the NC-DTO electrode shows superior electrochemical performance (capacity: 272 mA h g^-1 at 0.25 C, capacity retention: 98.8% after 5000 cycles at 10 C, as well as ultrahigh capacity: 150 mA h g^-1 at 15 C). Density functional theory calculations combined with experimental results suggest that considerably improved sodium storage performance of NC-DTO is due to the enhanced electronic conductivity from the N-doped carbon layer as well as narrowed band gap and lowered sodiation energy barrier from the introduction of oxygen vacancies. This work highlights that introducing oxygen vacancies into TiO₂ by plasma is a promising method to enhance the electrochemical property of TiO₂, which also can be applied to different metal oxides for energy storage devices.
