Metallopolymer-Based Block Copolymers for the Preparation of Porous and Redox-Responsive Materials

Efficacy tumor therapeutic applications of stimuli-responsive block copolymer-based nano-assemblies

Block copolymers are composed of two or more blocks or segments with different chemical properties via various chemical bonds, which can assemble into nanoparticles with a "core-shell" structure. Due to the benefits of simple functionalization, superior drug-loading capacity, and good biocompatibility, various nano-assemblies based on block copolymers have become widely applied in the treatment of cancers in recent years. These nano-assemblies serve as carriers for anti-tumor bioactive, enhancing drug stability and prolonging their circulation time in vivo, which can reduce the toxic side effects of drugs and improve the therapeutic effect. However, the complex and heterogeneous tumor microenvironment poses challenges to the therapeutic efficacy of these nano-assemblies, having the result in the occurrence of drug resistance and the recurrence of tumors. Consequently, a diverse array of stimuli-responsive nano-assemblies has been devised in order to surmount these obstacles. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the utilization of stimuli-responsive nano-assemblies derived from block copolymers in the context of tumor treatment. The review summarizes block polymers responsive to internal stimuli (like ROS, redox, pH, and enzymes) and external stimuli (like light, and temperature), and discusses current challenges and prospects in this field, aiming to provide novel insights for clinical applications.

Molecularly Selective Polymer Interfaces for Electrochemical Separations

The molecular design of polymer interfaces has been key for advancing electrochemical separation processes. Precise control of molecular interactions at electrochemical interfaces has enabled the removal or recovery of charged species with enhanced selectivity, capacity, and stability. In this Perspective, we provide an overview of recent developments in polymer interfaces applied to liquid-phase electrochemical separations, with a focus on their role as electrosorbents as well as membranes in electrodialysis systems. In particular, we delve into both the single-site and macromolecular design of redox polymers and their use in heterogeneous electrochemical separation platforms. We highlight the significance of incorporating both redox-active and non-redox-active moieties to tune binding toward ever more challenging separations, including structurally similar species and even isomers. Furthermore, we discuss recent advances in the development of selective ion-exchange membranes for electrodialysis and the critical need to control the physicochemical properties of the polymer. Finally, we share perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in electrochemical separations, ranging from the need for a comprehensive understanding of binding mechanisms to the continued innovation of electrochemical architectures for polymer electrodes.

Polycobaltoceniumylmethylene - A Water-Soluble Polyelectrolyte Prepared by Ring-Opening Transmetalation Polymerization

The synthesis of a water-soluble polycobaltoceniumylmethylene chloride (PCM-Cl) via ring-opening transmetalation polymerization is presented. Starting from a carba[1]magnesocenophane and cobalt(II) chloride, this route gives access to a polymer with methylene-bridged cobaltocenium moieties within the polymers' main-chain. The polymer was characterized by NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, TGA, DSC, XRD, and CV measurements, as well as UV-vis spectroscopy. Furthermore, GPC measurements in an aqueous eluent versus pullulan standards were conducted to gain insight into the obtained molar masses and distributions. In addition, the ion-dependent solubility was demonstrated by anion exchange, tuning the hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties of this redox-responsive material.

A Biodegradable, Polymer-Supported Oxygen Atom Transfer Reagent

Biodegradable polymers are desirable to mitigate the environmental impact of plastic waste in the environment. Over the past several decades, the development of organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization (OROP) has made the synthesis of many new types of biodegradable polymers possible. In this research article, the first example of an oxygen atom transfer reagent pendant on a biodegradable polymer backbone is reported. The monomers for the polycarbonate backbone are sourced from the biodegradable 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid molecule, and an iodoaryl group is installed pendant to the cyclic monomer for post-polymerization modification into an iodosylaryl oxygen atom transfer reagent. The key I-O bond is characterized by XPS spectroscopy, and a test reaction to triphenylphosphine demonstrates the ability of the polymer to engage in an oxygen atom transfer reaction with a substrate.

Study of the phase-transition behavior of (AB)3 type star polystyrene-block-poly(n-butylacrylate) copolymers by the combination of rheology and SAXS

A series of three-armed star polystyrene-block-poly(n-butylacrylate) copolymers (PS-b-PBA)3 were synthesized to study the phase-transition behavior of the copolymers. The order-to-disorder transition temperature has been determined by oscillatory at different temperatures and dynamic temperature sweep at a fixed frequency. Moreover, the micro-phase separation in the block copolymers has been evaluated by time–temperature superposition, while the free volume and the active energy of the copolymers have been calculated. Interestingly, active energy decreased with the increase in the molecular weight of the PBA components. To further determine the order-to-disorder transition temperature precisely, small angle X-ray scattering was performed at different temperatures. These results confirm that the chain mobility of the star-shaped copolymers is strongly dependent on the arm molecular weight of the star polymers, which will be beneficial for the processing and material preparation of the block copolymers.

Synthesis and Characterization of Metallopolymer Networks featuring Triple Shape-Memory Ability Based on Different Reversible Metal Complexes

This study presents the synthesis and characterization of metallopolymer networks with a triple shape-memory ability. A covalently crosslinked polymer network featuring two different additional ligands in its side chains is synthesized via free radical polymerization (FRP). The subsequent addition of different metal salts leads to the selective formation of complexes with two different association constants (Ka), proven via isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). Those two supramolecular crosslinks feature different activation temperatures and can act as two individual switching units enabling the fixation and recovery of two temporary shapes. The presented samples were investigated in a detailed fashion via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and FT-Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, thermo-mechanical analyses (TMA) revealed excellent dual and triple shape-memory abilities of the presented metallopolymer networks.

Ferrocene-Based Porous Organic Polymer (FPOP): Synthesis, Characterization and an Electrochemical Study

Ferrocene-based porous organic polymers (FPOPs) were prepared from phenol-formaldehyde polymer (Bakelite) and phenol as starting materials; and two possible mechanisms for polymerization were discussed. Solid-state 13C CP-MAS NMR, FTIR, powder XRD, elemental analysis and ICP (Fe, Na, B) were performed to characterize the prepared materials. The two synthetic approaches produced polymers with different pore sizes: the FPOP synthesized through Bakelite presented a higher surface area (52 m2 g−1) when compared to the one obtained by the bottom-up polymerization from phenol (only 5 m2 g−1). Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the thermal stability of the material, which decomposed at 350 °C. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry (CV) of the new FPOP on modified electrodes, in ACN and 0.1 M TBAP as an electrolyte, showed fully reversible electron transfer, which is similar to that observed for the ferrocene probe dissolved in the same electrolyte. As a proof-of-concept for an electrochromic device, this novel material was also tested, with a color change detected between yellow/brownish coloration (reduced form) and green/blue coloration (oxidized form). The new hybrid FPOP seems very promising for material science, energy storage and electrochromic applications, as well as for plastic degradation.

A block copolymer templated approach for the preparation of nanoporous polymer structures and cellulose fiber hybrids by ozone treatment

Porous nanostructures were derived after self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers and subsequent ozone-mediated block segment degradation. Highly ordered pores were obtained for BCP films and for coatings at cellulose fibers’ surfaces.

Metallopolymers in minutes via organocatalysis at room temperature

Organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization of cyclic carbonate monomers derivatized with metallocenes is described for the rapid synthesis of high Mn metallopolymers.

Rings and Chains: Synthesis and Characterization of Polyferrocenylmethylene

The synthesis and characterization of polyferrocenylmethylene (PFM) starting from dilithium 2,2-bis(cyclopentadienide)propane and a Me₂ C[1]magnesocenophane is reported. Molecular weights of up to M_w  = 11 700 g mol^-1 featuring a dispersity, Ð, of 1.40 can be achieved. The material is studied by different methods comprising nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight (MALDI-ToF) mass spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurements elucidating the molecular structure and thermal properties of these novel polymers. Moreover, cyclic voltammetry (CV) reveals quasi-reversible oxidation and reduction behavior and communication between the iron centers. Also, the crystal structure of a related cyclic hexamer is presented.

Thermoresponsive polymers as macromolecular coordination ligands: complexation-dependence of thermally induced aggregation in aqueous solution

Novel dual-responsive macromolecular ligands for metal coordination were developed, for which the aggregation state is affected by the two stimuli of temperature and Fe2+ ions.

Recent advances in metallopolymer-based drug delivery systems

Metallopolymers (MPs) or metal-containing polymers have shown great potential as new drug delivery systems (DDSs) due to their unique properties, including universal architectures, composition, properties and surface chemistry. Over the past few decades, the exponential growth of many new classes of MPs that deal with these issues has been demonstrated. This review presents and assesses the recent advances and challenges associated with using MPs as DDSs. Among the most widely used MPs for these purposes, metal complexes based on synthetic and natural polymers, coordination polymers, metal-organic frameworks, and metallodendrimers are distinguished. Particular attention is paid to the stimulus- and multistimuli-responsive metallopolymer-based DDSs. Of considerable interest is the use of MPs for combination therapy and multimodal systems. Finally, the problems and future prospects of using metallopolymer-based DDSs are outlined. The bibliography includes articles published over the past five years.

Synthesis and Reactivity of Metallocarbene-Containing Polymers

Metallopolymers are an emerging class of materials with potential utility as semiconductors, catalysts, optical device components, and stimuli responsive networks. While polymer frameworks have been decorated with an array of organometallic moieties, the incorporation of metallocarbenes has been largely overlooked. Here, we report ring-opening metathesis polymerization as a strategy for the synthesis of Fischer carbene-containing polymers. High degrees of polymerization were observed (>800 repeats), and the isolated materials exhibited exceptional solubility and thermal stability. The tungsten carbene subunits were readily incorporated into block copolymers and could be modified through subsequent transformations. Moreover, the metallocarbene polymers were found to release carbon monoxide upon exposure to light or oxygen, which is unusual for tungsten carbene complexes. These metallocarbene-containing polymers could represent new platforms for the development of functional materials.

Synthesis and Characterization of Phosphorus- and Carborane-Containing Polyoxanorbornene Block Copolymers

Grubbs-catalyzed ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of carborane- and phosphonate-containing monomers has been used for the generation of hybrid block copolymers. Molecular weights with Mn of 50,000 g/mol were readily obtained with polydispersity index values, Đ, between 1.03⁻1.08. Reaction of the phospha ester and carborane substituted oxanorbornene block copolymer with trimethylsilyl bromide led to a new polymer with phosphonic acid functionalities. In application studies, the phospha-carborane functionalized block polymer was tested as heat resistance material. Thermal stability was investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) analysis. Thermal treatment and ceramic yield under air were directly correlated to the carborane content of the block copolymer. However, phosphorus content in the polymer was more crucial for the char residues when heated under nitrogen atmosphere. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) increased as the number of phosphonate functionalities increased. However, corresponding phosphonic acid derivatives featured a lower heat release rate and total heat release. Moreover, the phosphonic acid functionalities of the block copolymer offer efficient chelating capabilities for iron nanoparticles, which is of interest for applications in biomedicine in the future. The complexation with iron oxide nanoparticles was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP⁻MS).

Metallopolymers for advanced sustainable applications

Since the development of metallopolymers, there has been tremendous interest in the applications of this type of materials. The interest in these materials stems from their potential use in industry as catalysts, biomedical agents in healthcare, energy storage and production as well as climate change mitigation. The past two decades have clearly shown exponential growth in the development of many new classes of metallopolymers that address these issues. Today, metallopolymers are considered to be at the forefront for discovering new and sustainable heterogeneous catalysts, therapeutics for drug-resistant diseases, energy storage and photovoltaics, molecular barometers and thermometers, as well as carbon dioxide sequesters. The focus of this review is to highlight the advances in design of metallopolymers with specific sustainable applications.

Recent Trends in Metallopolymer Design: Redox-Controlled Surfaces, Porous Membranes, and Switchable Optical Materials Using Ferrocene-Containing Polymers

Metallopolymers with metal functionalities are a unique class of functional materials. Their redox-mediated optoelectronic and catalytic switching capabilities, their outstanding structure formation and separation capabilities have been reported recently. Within this Minireview, the scope and limitations of intriguing ferrocene-containing systems will be discussed. In the first section recent advances in metallopolymer design will be given leading to a plethora of novel metallopolymer architectures. Discussed synthetic pathways comprise controlled and living polymerization protocols as well as surface immobilization strategies. In the following sections, we focus on recent advances and new applications for side-chain and main-chain ferrocene-containing polymers as (i) remote-switchable materials, (ii) smart surfaces, (iii) redox-responsive membranes, and some recent trends in (iv) photonic structures and (v) other optical applications.
