Abstract
Metal-free organic dyes are promising dyes that can be applied widely in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The rational design and selection of dyes with complementary absorption can promote the development of methods that can enhance the utilization of incident light by DSSCs, such as cosensitization and tandem devices. Based on these opinions, the structure of the reported high-performance metal-free organic dye ZL003 is used as a template to design two new metal-free organic dyes, HX-1 and HX-2, by replacing its donor unit with a 2-phenothiazine-phenylamine unit and fusing its three independent π-bridge units into a whole with the aim of driving the red shift and the blue shift of the absorption spectra of ZL003, respectively. Through theoretical investigation, it is demonstrated that the perfect complementary optical absorption of HX-1 and HX-2 can be realized as the shift of the absorption spectra of ZL003 to different directions, which means their feasibility to the application in cosensitization or tandem dye-sensitized solar cells (T-DSSCs). Furthermore, it is hypothesized that HX-1 may be the dye with better photovoltaic performance than ZL003 by modeling their intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) processes, TiO2 surface adsorption, and photovoltaic parameters. The short-circuit current density (Jsc) and photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of HX-1 are 23.10 mA·cm-2 and 21.26% in theory, compared to those of 20.68 mA·cm-2 and 19.64% in ZL003 at the same computational level, respectively. In view of the complementary optical properties, the combination of HX-1 with HX-2 may be a reasonable option for dyes for the development of a highly efficient cosensitization system or T-DSSCs in the future. In terms of such findings, these two novel metal-free organic dyes may have bright prospects in the research of highly efficient DSSCs, and this work can provide a reference for the design of dyes with complementary absorption through simple structural adjustments of the realistic dyes with high photovoltaic performance.

Abstract
In present work, the influence of internal acceptors and π-spacers on optoelectronic properties for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is investigated. The dyes consist of various internal acceptors (A), a triphenylamine donor and π-spacers combined with cyanoacrylic acid acceptor. Density functional theory (DFT) was employed to inspect the dye geometries, charge transport characteristics and electronic excitations. The frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), highest occupied molecular orbital, lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and HOMO-LUMO energy gap are assisted in the determination of suitable energy levels for electron transfer, electron injection and regeneration of dye. The required photovoltaic parameters like JSC, ΔGreg, ΔGinj, LHE and other associated parameters are presented. The results demonstrate that altering the π-bridge and adding an internal acceptor to the D-π-A scaffold changes the photovoltaic properties and absorption energies. Therefore, the key objective of the current effort is to launch a theoretical groundwork for suitable operational alterations and scheme in creating successful DSSCs.

Abstract
The efficiency of the newly designed dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) containing triphenylamine, diphenylamine (TPA), phenothiazine, and phenoxazine as donors and triazine, phenyl with D1-D2-π-linker-π-(A)2 architecture has been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD-DFT) methods. These methods were used to investigate the geometrical structures, electronic properties, absorption, photovoltaic properties, and chemical reactivity. Furthermore, the calculated results indicate that different architectures can modify the energy levels of HOMO and LUMO and reduce the energy gap. The absorption undergoes a redshift displacement. This work aims at calculating the structural geometries and the electronic and optical properties of the designed dyes. Furthermore, the dye adsorption characteristics, such as the optoelectronic properties and the adsorption energies in the TiO2 clusters, were calculated with counterpoise correction and discussed.

Abstract
In the present work, the structural and electronic properties of the D-D'-π-A organic dye with two donors have been calculated theoretically by DFT/time-dependent DFT method. In order to prove their efficiency as sensitizers, a comparative study was performed with a series of D-π-A architecture with one donor. The results of light-harvesting efficiency (LHE), open circuit voltage (Voc), free energy injection (∆Ginj), free energy dye regeneration∆Greg,excited-state lifetimes for the two series reveal that the D-D'-π-A dyes are promising for the design of new sensitive dyes in solar cells.

Abstract
A D-A-π-A dye (PTZ-5) has been synthesized by introducing a benzothiadiazole (BTD) unit as an auxiliary acceptor in a phenothiazine-based D-π-A dye(PTZ-3) to broaden its spectral response range and improve the device performance. Photophysical properties indicate that the inclusion of BTD in the PTZ-5 effectively red-shifted the absorption spectra by reducing the E gap. However, the device measurements show that the open-circuit voltage (V oc) of PTZ-5 cell (640 mV) is obviously lower than that of the PTZ-3 cell (710 mV). This results in a poor photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) (4.43%) compared to that of PTZ-3 cell (5.53%). Through further comparative analysis, we found that the introduction of BTD increases the dihedral angle between the D and A unit, which can reduce the efficiency of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), lead to a less q CT and lower molar extinction coefficient of PTZ-5. In addition, the ESI test found that the lifetime of the electrons in the PTZ-5 cell is shorter. These are the main factors for the above unexpected result of PCE. Our studies bring new insights into the development of phenothiazine-based highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).

Abstract
A series of heterocyclic donor-acceptor systems were synthesized and well characterized by using 1H, 13C NMR, FT-IR, and elemental analysis. They were designed to investigate the effect of thiophene and cyanoacrylic acid number units on the thermal, optical, electrochemical and finally photovoltaic properties of dye-sensitized solar cells prepared with the selected compounds. The effect of chemical structure on their properties was demonstrated. They showed the beginning of thermal decomposition between 230 and 270 °C. The compounds absorbed the radiation in the range of 300-500 nm or 200-400 nm. They were electrochemically active and varied in energy band gap from 3.40 to 1.58 eV. Additionally, their optimized geometry, HOMO-LUMO levels, ionization potential, and electron affinity were evaluated using density functional theory. The photovoltaic devices based on TiO2 sensitized with the obtained molecules exhibited low power conversion efficiency, which was the highest for the device containing the symmetrical molecule with bithiophene structure. Under co-sensitization, the cell made of the same compound gave significant enhancement of efficiency of 6.3% being higher to that of the individual device prepared from dye N719 (5.75%). Moreover, the effects of immersion time of TiO2 electrode in the dye solution and co-sensitization methods were tested. The surface morphology of photoanode was investigated using atomic force microscopy.
