Abstract
High levels of unconjugated bilirubin (UB) in serum lead to asymptomatic and neonatal jaundice and brain dysfunctions. Herein, we have reported the detection of UB at as low as 1 μM in an aqueous alkaline medium using a Zn(II) complex. The specificity of the complex has been validated by the HPLC in the concentration window 6-90 μM, which is rare. The sensory response of the probe at physiological pH against nitro explosives developed it as an instant-acting fluorosensor for picric acid (PA) and 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP). Spectroscopic titration provided a binding constant of 4×105 M-1 with PA. The naked eye detection was found to be 15 μM. The solid-state photoluminescent nature of the complex enabled it for PA sensing in the solid phase. Interestingly, the probe remained fluorescent in various volatile and non-volatile organic solvents. As a result, it can also detect PA and 2,4-DNP in a wide range of common organic media. NMR studies revealed the coordination of PA, 2,4-DNP, and UB to the Zn(II) center of the probe, which is responsible for the observed quenching of the probe with the analytes.

Abstract
Nitroaromatic compounds are illicit explosive chemicals. For environmental security and homeland safety, selective and sensitive identification of these secondary-class explosives has been a reason for the exhaustive research arena of chemists for about a decade. We introduced a sensitive optical sensor with desalted neutral red (NR) dye. After ingressing picric acid (PA) in acetonitrile, the probe becomes non-fluorescent, displaying a colorimetric change from yellow to pink. The quenched phenomena and the changed color were re-established with aliphatic amine, trimethylamine (TEA). The reversibility is produced cyclically, both in fluorimetrically and spectrophotometrically. The detection limit for PA with our probe comes out as 0.639 µM; this value is significantly lower than many chemosensors available in the literature. Also, NR-stained filter paper strips-based test kit analysis has been deployed as a displayable photonic device for in-situ detection of PA. Furthermore, the whole system was conceptualized to produce single input, single output, and double input single output logic gates, which can be applied to digital devices. The chronological input manner as NTP (NR- TEA-PA) pushed us to configure a molecular keypad lock system, the basis of digital locking devices. The repeatable & reversible detection system exhibits "Write read- Erase-read Write-read' type memory devices.

Abstract
Picric acid (PA) is a lethal explosive substance that is easily soluble in water and harmful to the environment. Here, a supramolecular polymer material BTPY@Q[8] with aggregation induced emission (AIE) was prepared by supramolecular self-assembly of cucurbit uril (Q[8]) and 1,3,5-tris[4-(pyridin-4-yl) phenyl] benzene derivative (BTPY), which exhibited aggregation-induced fluorescence enhancement. To this supramolecular self-assembly, the addition of a number of nitrophenols was found to have no obvious effect on the fluorescence, however on addition of PA, the fluorescence intensity underwent a dramatic quench. For PA, BTPY@Q[8] had sensitive specificity and effective selectivity. Based on this, a quick and simple on-site visual PA fluorescence quantitative detection platform was developed using smart phones, and the platform was used to monitor temperature. Machine learning (ML) is a popular pattern recognition technology, which can accurately predict the results from data. Therefore, ML has much more potential for analyzing and improving sensing data than the widely used statistical pattern recognition method. In the field of analytical science, the sensing platform offers a reliable method for the quantitative detection of PA that can be applied to other analytes or micropollutant screening.

Abstract
In this study, Schiff base compounds (1-5) were synthesized by the reaction of 5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline with various aldehydes. The molecular structures of the synthesized compounds were characterized by FT-IR, 1H/13C NMR and mass spectroscopic methods. Single crystals of 1 were obtained and their molecular structures in crystalline form were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. The sensor properties of the synthesized compounds against nitroaromatic compounds [nitrobenzene (NB), 4-nitrophenol (NP), 2,4-dintrophenol (DNP) and 1,3,5-trinitrophenol (TNP)] were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy. Compound 3 have highest sensitivity for the sensing of 1,3,5-trinitrophenol (TNP) (Ksv: 4.63 × 104 M-1) with LOD of 4.01 µM while compound 5 showed the highest sensitivity for 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) (Ksv: 5.71 × 104 M-1) with LOD of 4.75 µM. In addition, the structural parameters (bond angles/lengths), contour diagrams of HOMO/LUMO molecular orbitals, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps, non-linear optical (NLO) and OLED properties were investigated by computational studies. According to the HOMO and LUMO energies, the NLO property of the molecule (5) is higher than both other molecules and the reference substance urea.

Abstract
A rare combination of dual static and dynamic fluorescence quenching mechanisms is reported, while sensing the nitroexplosive trinitrotoluene (TNT) in water by a cationic conjugated copolymer PFPy. Since the fluorophore PFPy interacts with TNT in both ground state as well as the excited states, a greater extent of interaction is facilitated between PFPy and the TNT, as a result of which the magnitude of the signal is amplified remarkably. The existence of these collective sensing mechanisms provides additional advantages to the sensing process and enhances the sensing parameters, such as LoD and highly competitive sensing processes in natural water bodies irrespective of the pH and at ambient conditions. These outcomes involving dual sensing mechanistic pathways expand the scope of developing efficient sensing probes for toxic chemical analyte and biomarker detection, preventing environmental pollution and strengthening security at sensitive locations while assisting in early diagnosis of disease biomarkers.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent sensor based on an asymmetric anthracene derivative (SSAPA) was designed and synthesized. Using this molecule, a rapid and sensitive assay for detecting Tb3+ and ATP in aqueous solutions was established. The SSAPA molecule had excellent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) performance and good aqueous dispersion ability. This molecule could coordinate with Tb3+ and the fluorescence quenched linearly with the increase in the concentration of Tb3+ from 0.005 to 1.2 μM. Since both Tb3+ and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) have strong binding ability, ATP can compete with Tb3+ from the SSAPA/Tb3+ complex leading to fluorescence recovery. In this way, a brand-new fluorescent "turn-on" assay for ATP in the range from 0.01 to 0.4 μM was developed using the Tb3+-based complex probe. The detection limits for Tb3+ and ATP both reached single-digit nanomole per millilitre (2.8 nM and 4.5 nM, respectively), which demonstrated that this method has high sensitivity. Besides, Tb3+ and ATP also could be well detected in other complex environments such as real water samples or serum samples. This study provides a feasible assay for detecting trace amounts of Tb3+ and ATP in aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Since the aggregation induced emission (AIE) phenomenon was reported, many research groups have used this unique AIE effect to develop chemo- or bio-sensors for detecting ions, gases, explosives, proteins, and enzymes. Most of these sensors work in their aggregate state, therefore, fluorescence stability has become one of the important problem, and unfortunately, as far as we know, there is no paper to discuss what factors can improve the fluorescence stability of AIE compounds in the aggregate state, if the fluorescence stability of the sensors are poor, there will seriously affect the detection result. In this article, we found that compounds with hydrophobic long alkyl substituents can maintain stable fluorescence intensity for a long time in the aggregate state. In addition, cyclohexane is introduced as a hydrophobic substituent. Therefore, the fluorescence stability of the aggregates also increased by 90% within 1800s. The aggregation solutions of CB-3 and CSB-2 were left for two weeks, and no significant changes were found in the fluorescence intensity. Molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) shows that the presence of hydrophobic substituents in compounds cause the molecules to be closely interspersed with each other, hence, making it difficult to change the optical properties, microstructure and stacking mode of the AIE aggregates by external stimulations. The introduction of hydrophobic substituents improves the fluorescence stability of AIE compounds, and makes the AIE phenomenon more valuable in the fields of biological/chemical sensing and imaging.

Abstract
The discovery of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon, significantly altered the understanding of the scientific world about the luminophore aggregation. Polymers with AIE features have recently emerged as promising materials with wide range of applications in optoelectronics devices, chemosensors, bioimaging, cancer theranostics and drug delivery. By introducing the AIE active molecule into the polymer structure, novel materials encompassing the characteristics properties of both the functional materials such as excellent brightness, versatile structure modification, high biocompatibility, exceptional stability and facile processability are achieved. This chapter presents the advances in synthetic design as well as potential biological applications of AIE active polymers, beginning with a brief introduction to the AIE phenomenon. The versatile synthetic route, easier functionalization, and light up feature of the AIE active polymers offer direct visualization of the physiological processes within or outside the living organisms. This chapter also precisely describes the photodynamic therapy/photothermal therapy (PDT/PTT) with up-to-date advancement of AIE active polymer and their emerging applications in biomedical field. The AIE active Photosensitizers (PSs) are much more efficient in singlet oxygen (1O2) production than their small molecule AIE active PSs due to their enhanced inter system crossing (ISC) process and improved light-harvesting ability. Additionally, the present chapter aims to focus on all recent AIE active polymers for drug screening and drug delivery. The AIE active polymer often shows decent drug loading capacity, high stability and good biocompatibility comprising image guided drug monitoring features. Lastly, the concluding discussion reveals the future prospective of the AIE active polymers.

Abstract
Picric acid (PA) at low concentration is a serious water pollutant. Alongside, aliphatic amines (AAs) add to the queue to pollute surface water. Plenty of reports are available to sense PA with an ultralow limit of detection (LOD). However, only a handful of works are testified to detect AAs. A new fluorescent donor-acceptor compound has been synthesized with inherent intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character that enables selective and sensitive colorimetric quantitative detection of PA and AAs with low LODs in non-aqueous as well as aqueous solutions. The synthesized compound is based on a hemicyanine skeleton containing two pyridenylmethylamino groups at the donor and a benzothiazole moiety at the acceptor ends. The detailed mechanisms and reaction dynamics are explained spectroscopically along with computational support. The fluorescence property of the detecting compound changes due to protonation of its pyridinyl centers by PA leading to quenching of fluorescence and subsequently de-protonation by AAs to revive the signal. We have further designed logic circuits from the acquired optical responses by sequential interactions.

Abstract
This work addresses the synthetic optimization of carbon dots (CDs) and their application in sensing picric acid from latent fingerprints by exploiting a smartphone-based RGB tool. The optimization of the synthesis of CDs is investigated towards achieving shorter reaction time, better product yield and fluorescence quantum efficiency. Precursors such as citric acid and thiourea were chosen for the synthesis of CDs. Among the various synthetic methodologies, it is found that the pyrolysis method offers ∼50% product yield within 15 min. The morphology and optical properties of the prepared CDs are characterized using the typical microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, respectively. The synthesized CDs exhibit quasi-spherical shape with an average particle size of 1.7 nm. The excitation dependent emissive properties of CDs are investigated by time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Furthermore, the excellent fluorescence properties (φ = 11%) of CDs are explored as a fluorescent fingerprint powder for the identification of latent fingerprints on various substrates. In addition, the presence of picric acid in latent fingerprints was detected. Furthermore, this study is extended to perform real time detection of fingerprints and harmful contaminants in fingerprints by utilizing a smartphone-based RGB color analysis tool. Based on these investigations, the prepared CDs could be a prospective fluorescent material in the field of forensics.

Abstract
Three D-π-A barbituric acid derivatives with simple structure and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanisms were synthesized. Molecular dynamics simulations have successfully explained that CB-1 exhibits the best aggregate induced emission (AIE) activity due to the electron-deficient barbituric acid and the electron-rich carbazole exhibit a conformation which similar to π-π stacking, resulting in a strong electrostatic attraction between the molecules, meanwhile the N-atom substituent of the carbazole is n-propane plays a hydrophobic role. At the same time, barbituric acid derivatives also have mechanochromic fluorescent properties. In addition, CB-1 and CB-3 exhibited outstanding fluorescence stability than CB-2 in aggregation state which can be used to detect nitroaromatic explosives in aqueous media. The Stern-Volmer quenching constant (Ksv) of CB-1 and CB-3 is 6.6 × 104 and 1 × 105 M-1, respectively.

Abstract
Barbituric acid derivatives with typical aggregation induced emission (AIE) are reported. Their emission wavelengths varied with water fraction of their solution. UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and theoretical calculations revealed the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) possibility from donor to acceptor and the mechanism was confirmed as a restriction of intramolecular motion (RIM). The AIE properties were affected by the different substituents on barbituric acid. When the molecular volume increased, the AIE effect decreased. Fluorescent quenching mechanism was applied to detect nitroaromatic explosives. For 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (PA), one of the derivatives 5-(4-diphenylamino styrene)-1,3-diphenyl-barbituric acid in THF/H2O mixture (1:9, v/v), showed amplified fluorescence quenching with a maximum Stern-Volmer quenching constant of 4.1 × 104 M-1. The solid phase paper test based on 5-(4-diphenylamino styrene)-1,3-diphenyl-barbituric acid also showed a superior sensitivity toward PA both in vapor and solution.

Abstract
Luminescent semiconducting oligomers (LSOs) have been one of the most popular molecular materials that can be applied in various fields because of their distinctive optical properties. The study of molecular packing and morphological change of oligomers is essential for the rational design of materials and regulation functions. Herein, we report two novel LSOs (OFBB and OFBT) with a slight difference in chemical structures but show a distinct difference in self-assembly behaviors in the coordination-driven process. OFBB forms spherical particles with Zn(II). Compared with OFBB, OFBT has an additional thiazole moiety, which forms spherical particles with Zn(II) and then transforms to a crystalline nanobelt in 2 h. The process and mechanism of the nanosphere and nanobelt formation were investigated in detail. The double S···N interaction between two benzothiazoles in adjacent oligomers played a significant contribution in this dynamic morphology transformation. In addition, the as-prepared two products showed excellent sensing toward nitrobenzene with good selectivity over other nitro-aromatic explosives.

Abstract
Calixarene-functionalized water dispersible silver nanoparticles have been synthesized and characterized on the basis of UV-vis, IR, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis, and their sensing properties toward metal ions have been investigated. They selectively detect Hg2+ and Hg0 in solution and vapor phases, respectively, with distinct color change. Interference study with mixture of metal ions revealed no interference from any other metal ions used in this study. Their mechanism of detection involved Hg2+-aided displacement of calixarene moiety from the surface of the functionalized nanoparticles, followed by the formation of Ag-Hg amalgam due to interaction of Hg2+ with Ag0 and also the formation of assembly of Ag0 nanoparticles by dipole-dipole interaction of the bare-surfaced nanoparticles. Electrochemical study revealed that with the aid of functionalized nanoparticles, Hg2+ can be detected amperometrically with high sensitivity. The detection limits obtained for Hg2+ by UV-vis study and amperometry are 0.5 nM (0.1 ppb) and 10 nM (2 ppb), respectively. The new material has been used to detect Hg2+ in aqueous real sample and Hg0 in soil sample.
