Graphene/Boron Nitride-Polyurethane Microlaminates for Exceptional Dielectric Properties and High Energy Densities

Enhancing Dielectric Properties of (CaCu3Ti4O12 NWs-Graphene)/PVDF Ternary Oriented Composites by Hot Stretching

Using high-dielectric inorganic ceramics as fillers can effectively increase the dielectric constant of polymer-based composites. However, a high percentage of fillers will inevitably lead to a decrease in the mechanical toughness of the composite materials. By introducing high aspect ratio copper calcium titanate (CaCu3Ti4O12) nanowires (CCTO NWs) and graphene as fillers, the ternary poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based composites (CCTO NWs-graphene)/PVDF with a significant one-dimensional orientation structure were prepared by hot stretching. CCTO NWs and graphene are arranged in a directional manner to form a large number of microcapacitor structures, which significantly improves the dielectric constant of the composites. When the ratio of CCTO NWs and graphene is 0.2 and 0.02, the oriented composites have the highest dielectric constant, which is 19.3% higher than the random composites, respectively. Numerical simulations reveal that the introduction of graphene and the construction of the one-dimensional oriented microstructure have a positive effect on improving the dielectric properties of the composites. This study provides a strategy to improve the dielectric properties of composite materials by structural design without changing the filler content, which has broad application prospects in the field of electronic devices.

Highly Aligned Graphene Aerogels for Multifunctional Composites

Stemming from the unique in-plane honeycomb lattice structure and the sp2 hybridized carbon atoms bonded by exceptionally strong carbon-carbon bonds, graphene exhibits remarkable anisotropic electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. To maximize the utilization of graphene's in-plane properties, pre-constructed and aligned structures, such as oriented aerogels, films, and fibers, have been designed. The unique combination of aligned structure, high surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, mechanical stability, thermal conductivity, and porous nature of highly aligned graphene aerogels allows for tailored and enhanced performance in specific directions, enabling advancements in diverse fields. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in highly aligned graphene aerogels and their composites. It highlights the fabrication methods of aligned graphene aerogels and the optimization of alignment which can be estimated both qualitatively and quantitatively. The oriented scaffolds endow graphene aerogels and their composites with anisotropic properties, showing enhanced electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties along the alignment at the sacrifice of the perpendicular direction. This review showcases remarkable properties and applications of aligned graphene aerogels and their composites, such as their suitability for electronics, environmental applications, thermal management, and energy storage. Challenges and potential opportunities are proposed to offer new insights into prospects of this material.

Energy Storage Performance of Polymer-Based Dielectric Composites with Two-Dimensional Fillers

Dielectric capacitors have garnered significant attention in recent decades for their wide range of uses in contemporary electronic and electrical power systems. The integration of a high breakdown field polymer matrix with various types of fillers in dielectric polymer nanocomposites has attracted significant attention from both academic and commercial sectors. The energy storage performance is influenced by various essential factors, such as the choice of the polymer matrix, the filler type, the filler morphologies, the interfacial engineering, and the composite structure. However, their application is limited by their large amount of filler content, low energy densities, and low-temperature tolerance. Very recently, the utilization of two-dimensional (2D) materials has become prevalent across several disciplines due to their exceptional thermal, electrical, and mechanical characteristics. Compared with zero-dimensional (0D) and one-dimensional (1D) fillers, two-dimensional fillers are more effective in enhancing the dielectric and energy storage properties of polymer-based composites. The present review provides a comprehensive overview of 2D filler-based composites, encompassing a wide range of materials such as ceramics, metal oxides, carbon compounds, MXenes, clays, boron nitride, and others. In a general sense, the incorporation of 2D fillers into polymer nanocomposite dielectrics can result in a significant enhancement in the energy storage capability, even at low filler concentrations. The current challenges and future perspectives are also discussed.

Preparation of High-k Polymeric Composites Based on Low-k Boron Nitride Nanosheets with High-Connectivity Lamellar Structure

Typically, the basic method to enhance the dielectric response of polymer-based composites is to fill giant dielectric ceramic fillers, such as BaTiO₃ and CaCu₃Ti₄O₁₂, into the polymer matrix. Here, by using low-k boron nitride (BN) with well-controlled microstructure and surface, we successfully prepared a high-k polymeric composite, where the improvement in the dielectric constant of the composite even exceeds that of composites containing BaTiO₃ and CaCu₃Ti₄O₁₂ particles at the same weight percent. First, a lamellar boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS) aerogel was prepared by bidirectional freezing and freeze drying, respectively, and then the aerogel was calcined at 1000 °C to obtain the lamellar BNNS skeleton with some hydroxyl groups. Finally, the epoxy resin (EP) was vacuum impregnated into the BNNS skeleton and cured inside to prepare the lamellar-structured BNNSs/EP (LBE) composites. Interestingly, the dielectric constants of LBE with a 10 wt % BNNS content reached 8.5 at 10³ Hz, which was higher by 2.7 times than that of pure EP. The experimental data and the finite element simulations suggested that the increased dielectric constants of LBE resulted from the combination of two factors, namely, the lamellar microstructure and the hydroxyl groups. The stacking of the BNNS phase into a highly connected lamellar skeleton significantly increased the internal electric field and the polarization intensity, while the introduction of hydroxyl groups on the BNNS surface further improved the polarization of the composite, resulting in a significant increase in the dielectric constant of the LBE. This work provides a new strategy for improving the dielectric constant through the microstructure design of composites.

A Bilayer High-Temperature Dielectric Film with Superior Breakdown Strength and Energy Storage Density

The further electrification of various fields in production and daily life makes it a topic worthy of exploration to improve the performance of capacitors for a long time, including thin-film capacitors. The discharge energy density of thin-film capacitors that serves as one of the important types directly depends on electric field strength and the dielectric constant of the insulation material. However, it has long been a great challenge to improve the breakdown strength and dielectric constant simultaneously. Considering that boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) possess superior insulation and thermal conductivity owing to wide band gap and 2-dimensional structure, a bilayer polymer film is prepared via coating BNNS by solution casting on surface of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films. By revealing the bandgap and insulating behavior with UV absorption spectrum, leakage current, and finite element calculation, it is manifested that nanocoating contributes to enhance the bandgap of polymer films, thereby suppressing the charge injection by redirecting their transport from electrodes. Worthy to note that an ultrahigh breakdown field strength (~ 736 MV m-1), an excellent discharge energy density (~ 8.77 J cm-3) and a prominent charge-discharge efficiency (~ 96.51%) are achieved concurrently, which is ascribed to the contribution of BNNS ultrathin layer. In addition, the modified PET films also have superior comprehensive performance at high temperatures (~ 120 °C). The materials and methods here selected are easily accessible and facile, which are suitable for large-scale roll-to-roll process production, and are of certain significance to explore the methods about film modification suitable for commercial promotion.

Improvement of the Thermal Conductivity and Mechanical Properties of 3D-Printed Polyurethane Composites by Incorporating Hydroxylated Boron Nitride Functional Fillers

Recently, the use of fused deposition modeling (FDM) in the three-dimensional (3D) printing of thermal interface materials (TIMs) has garnered increasing attention. Because fillers orient themselves along the direction of the melt flow during printing, this method could effectively enhance the thermal conductivity of existing composite materials. However, the poor compatibility and intensive aggregation of h-BN fillers in polymer composites are still detrimental to their practical application in thermally conductive materials. In this study, hydroxyl-functionalized boron nitride (OH-BN) particles were prepared by chemical modification and ultrasonic-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation to explore their impact on the surface compatibility, mechanical properties and the final anisotropic thermal conductivity of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites fabricated by FDM printing. The results show that the surface-functionalized OH-BN fillers are homogeneously dispersed in the TPU matrix via hydrogen bonding interactions, which improve the interfacial adhesion between the filler and matrix. For the same concentration of loaded filler, the OH-BN/TPU composites exhibit better mechanical properties and thermal conductivities than composites incorporating non-modified h-BN. These composites also show higher heat conduction along the stand-vertical direction, while simultaneously exhibiting a low dielectric constant and dielectric loss. This work therefore provides a possible strategy for the fabrication of thermal management polymers using 3D-printing methods.

BN-PVDF/rGO-PVDF Laminate Nanocomposites for Energy Storage Applications

The increasing demand for high energy storage devices calls for concurrently enhanced dielectric constants and reduced dielectric losses of polymer dielectrics. In this work, we rationally design dielectric composites comprising aligned 2D nanofillers of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) in a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix through a novel press-and-fold technique. Both nanofillers play different yet complementary roles: while rGO is designed to enhance the dielectric constant through charge accumulation at the interfaces with polymer, BNNS suppress the dielectric loss by preventing the mobility of free electrons. The microlaminate containing eight layers each of rGO/PVDF and BNNS/PVDF films exhibits remarkable dielectric performance with a dielectric constant of 147 and an ultralow dielectric loss of 0.075, due to the synergistic effect arising from the alternatingly electrically conductive and insulating films. Consequently, a maximum energy density of 3.5 J/cm³-about 18 times the bilayer composite counterpart-is realized. The high thermal conductivities of both nanofillers and their alignment endow the microlaminate with an excellent in-plane thermal conductivity of 6.53 Wm^-1K^-1, potentially useful for multifunctional applications. This work offers a simple but effective approach to fabricating a composite for high dielectric energy storage using two different 2D nanofillers.

Scalable anisotropic cooling aerogels by additive freeze-casting

Cooling in buildings is vital to human well-being but inevitability consumes significant energy, adding pressure on achieving carbon neutrality. Thermally superinsulating aerogels are promising to isolate the heat for more energy-efficient cooling. However, most aerogels tend to absorb the sunlight for unwanted solar heat gain, and it is challenging to scale up the aerogel fabrication while maintaining consistent properties. Herein, we develop a thermally insulating, solar-reflective anisotropic cooling aerogel panel containing in-plane aligned pores with engineered pore walls using boron nitride nanosheets by an additive freeze-casting technique. The additive freeze-casting offers highly controllable and cumulative freezing dynamics for fabricating decimeter-scale aerogel panels with consistent in-plane pore alignments. The unique anisotropic thermo-optical properties of the nanosheets combined with in-plane pore channels enable the anisotropic cooling aerogel to deliver an ultralow out-of-plane thermal conductivity of 16.9 mW m⁻¹ K⁻¹ and a high solar reflectance of 97%. The excellent dual functionalities allow the anisotropic cooling aerogel to minimize both parasitic and solar heat gains when used as cooling panels under direct sunlight, achieving an up to 7 °C lower interior temperature than commercial silica aerogels. This work offers a new paradigm for the bottom-up fabrication of scalable anisotropic aerogels towards practical energy-efficient cooling applications.

Scaling up anisotropic freeze-casting processes can be challenging due to the temperature gradient farther from the cold source. Here, authors report an additive freeze-casting technique able to produce large-scale aerogel panels and demonstrate it towards practical passive cooling applications.

High-energy-density polymer dielectrics via compositional and structural tailoring for electrical energy storage

Dielectric capacitors with higher working voltage and power density are favorable candidates for renewable energy systems and pulsed power applications. A polymer with high breakdown strength, low dielectric loss, great scalability, and reliability is a preferred dielectric material for dielectric capacitors. However, their low dielectric constant limits the polymer to achieve satisfying energy density. Therefore, great efforts have been made to get high-energy-density polymer dielectrics. By compositional and structural tailoring, the synergic integrations of the multiple components and optimized structural design effectively improved the energy storage properties. This review presents an overview of recent advancements in the field of high-energy-density polymer dielectrics via compositional and structural tailoring. The surface/interfacial engineering conducted on both microscale and macroscale for polymer dielectrics is the focus of this review. Challenges and the promising opportunities for the development of polymer dielectrics for capacitive energy storage applications are presented at the end of this review.

Enhanced Energy Density at a Low Electric Field in PVDF-Based Heterojunctions Sandwiched with High Ion-Polarized BTO Films

Inorganic/organic dielectric composites with outstanding energy storage properties at a low electric field possess the advantages of low operating voltage and small probability of failure. Composites filled with two-dimensional inorganic nanosheets have attracted much attention owing to their fewer interfacial defects caused by the agglomeration of fillers. Continuous oxide films with a preferred orientation can play a significant role in enhancing energy storage. The challenge is to prepare large-sized, freestanding, single-crystal, ferroelectric oxide films and to combine them with polymers. In this work, a well-developed water-dissolvent process was used to transfer millimeter-sized (100)-oriented BaTiO₃ (BTO) films. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based heterojunctions sandwiched with the single-crystal films were synthesized via the transferring process and an optimized hot-pressing technique. By virtue of high ion displacement polarization and inhibited conductive path formation of single-crystal BTO films, the energy storage density and efficiency of BTO/PVDF heterojunctions reach 1.56 J cm^-3 and 71.2% at a low electric field of 120 MV m^-1, which are much higher than those of pure PVDF and BTO nanoparticles/PVDF composite films, respectively. A finite-element simulation was employed to further confirm the experimental results. This work provides an effective approach to enhance energy storage properties in various polymer-based composites and opens the door to advanced dielectric capacitors.

Superinsulating BNNS/PVA Composite Aerogels with High Solar Reflectance for Energy-Efficient Buildings

With the mandate of worldwide carbon neutralization, pursuing comfortable living environment while consuming less energy is an enticing and unavoidable choice. Novel composite aerogels with super thermal insulation and high sunlight reflection are developed for energy-efficient buildings. A solvent-assisted freeze-casting strategy is used to produce boron nitride nanosheet/polyvinyl alcohol (BNNS/PVA) composite aerogels with a tailored alignment channel structure. The effects of acetone and BNNS fillers on microstructures and multifunctional properties of aerogels are investigated. The acetone in the PVA suspension enlarges the cell walls to suppress the shrinkage, giving rise to a lower density and a higher porosity, accompanied with much diminished heat conduction throughout the whole product. The addition of BNNS fillers creates whiskers in place of disconnected transverse ligaments between adjacent cell walls, further ameliorating the thermal insulation transverse to the cell wall direction. The resultant BNNS/PVA aerogel delivers an ultralow thermal conductivity of 23.5 mW m^-1 K^-1 in the transverse direction. The superinsulating aerogel presents both an infrared stealthy capability and a high solar reflectance of 93.8% over the whole sunlight wavelength, far outperforming commercial expanded polystyrene foams with reflective coatings. The anisotropic BNNS/PVA composite aerogel presents great potential for application in energy-saving buildings.

Elastomeric Nanodielectrics for Soft and Hysteresis-Free Electronics

Elastomeric dielectrics are crucial for reliably governing the carrier densities in semiconducting channels during deformation in soft/stretchable field-effect transistors (FETs). Uncontrolled stacking of polymeric chains renders elastomeric dielectrics poorly insulated at nanoscale thicknesses, thereby thick films are usually required, leading to high voltage or power consumption for on/off operations of FETs. Here, layer-by-layer assembly is exploited to build 15-nm-thick elastomeric nanodielectrics through alternative adsorption of oppositely charged polyurethanes (PUs) for soft and hysteresis-free FETs. After mild thermal annealing to heal pinholes, such PU multilayers offer high areal capacitances of 237 nF cm^-2 and low leakage current densities of 3.2 × 10^-8 A cm^-2 at 2 V. Owing to the intrinsic ductility of the elastomeric PUs, the nanofilms possess excellent dielectric properties at a strain of 5% or a bending radius of 1.5 mm, while the wrinkled counterparts show mechanical stability with negligible changes of leakage currents after repeated stretching to a strain of 50%. Besides, these nanodielectrics are immune to high humidity and conserve their properties when immersed into water, despite their assembly occurs aqueously. Furthermore, the PU dielectrics are implemented in carbon nanotube FETs, demonstrating low-voltage operations (< 1.5 V) and negligible hysteresis without any encapsulations.

Beyond homogeneous dispersion: oriented conductive fillers for high κ nanocomposites

Rational design of structures for regulating the thermal conductivities (κ) of materials is critical to many components and products employed in electrical, electronic, energy, construction, aerospace, and medical applications. As such, considerable efforts have been devoted to developing polymer composites with tailored conducting filler architectures and thermal conduits for highly improved κ. This paper is dedicated to overviewing recent advances in this area to offer perspectives for the next level of future development. The limitations of conventional particulate-filled composites and the issue of percolation are discussed. In view of different directions of heat dissipation in polymer composites for different end applications, various approaches for designing the micro- and macroscopic structures of thermally conductive networks in the polymer matrix are highlighted. Methodological approaches devised to significantly ameliorate thermal conduction are categorized with respect to the pathways of heat dissipation. Future prospects for the development of thermally conductive polymer composites with modulated thermal conduction pathways are highlighted.

Chitin/MoS2 Nanosheet Dielectric Composite Films with Significantly Enhanced Discharge Energy Density and Efficiency

High-performance dielectric nanomaterials have received increasing attention due to their important applications in the field of energy storage. Among various dielectric materials, polymer nanocomposite is one of the most promising candidates. However, the problems of environmental pollution caused by polymer-based dielectric materials have been extensively studied in recent years, which need to be solved urgently, leading to the search for new biodegradable dielectric materials. Herein, we report composite materials based on biodegradable and renewable chitin and molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) nanosheets for the first time. The MoS₂ nanosheets were first fabricated by glycerol/urea system and then KOH/urea aqueous solution was used to directly dissolve chitin at low temperature together with the dispersion of the MoS₂ nanosheets in a simple green process. The two-dimensional MoS₂ nanosheets possess high polarization strength, and a large specific surface area can enhance the interfacial polarization with chitin; meanwhile, it can serve as a charge breakdown barrier to hinder the propagation of electrical tree branches. The results also show that the dielectric constant and breakdown strength of the chitin/MoS₂ nanocomposites were increased, while the dielectric loss remained low. When the MoS₂ content was 5 wt %, the charge and discharge efficiencies of the composite film were more than 80%, and the breakdown strength also reached 350 MV m^-1, thus resulting in a high discharge energy density of 4.91 J cm^-3, which was more than twice of the neat chitin (2.17 J cm^-3). Furthermore, the nanocomposite films exhibited good thermal stability. Therefore, these chitin-based nanocomposite films are promising as high-performance biomass-based dielectric capacitors.

A review of multifunctional nacre-mimetic materials based on bidirectional freeze casting

Nacre has achieved an excellent combination of strength and toughness through its unique brick-and-mortar structure of layered aragonite platelets bonded with biopolymers. Mimicking nacre has been considered as a practical way for the development of high-performance structural composites. Over the past years, many techniques have been developed to fabricate multifunctional nacre-mimetic materials, including freeze casting, layer-by-layer assembly, vacuum filtration, 3D printing and so on. Among them, freeze casting, especially bidirectional freeze casting, as an environmentally friendly and scalable method, has attracted extensive attention recently. In this review, we begin with the introduction and discussion of various fabrication techniques comparing their advantages and disadvantages, focusing on the most recent advances of the bidirectional freeze casting technique. Then, we summarize representative examples of applying the bidirectional freeze casting technique to assemble various building blocks into multifunctional nacre-mimetic materials and their wide applications. At the end, we discuss the future direction of using bidirectional freeze casting to make nacre-mimetic materials.

Highly Thermal Conductivities, Excellent Mechanical Robustness and Flexibility, and Outstanding Thermal Stabilities of Aramid Nanofiber Composite Papers with Nacre-Mimetic Layered Structures

Aramid nanofiber (ANF) paper has shown potential applications in flexible electronics. However, its inherent low thermal conductivity coefficient (λ) values might threaten the safety of devices under a high-power working condition. In this work, polydopamine-functionalized boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS@PDA)/ANF thermally conductive composite papers with nacre-mimetic layered structures were prepared via highly efficient vacuum-assisted filtration followed by hot pressing. For a given BNNS loading, the surface functionalization of BNNS could further enhance the thermal conductivities and mechanical properties of BNNS@PDA/ANF composite papers. BNNS@PDA/ANF composite papers presented anisotropic thermal conductivities, and the through-plane (λ_⊥) and in-plane (λ_∥) values of the 50 wt % BNNS@PDA/ANF composite papers reached 0.62 and 3.94 W/mK, 181.8 and 196.2% higher than those of original ANF paper, respectively, which were also higher than those of 50 wt % BNNS/ANF composite papers (λ_⊥ = 0.52 W/mK and λ_∥ = 3.33 W/mK). The tensile strength of the 50 wt % BNNS@PDA/ANF composite papers reached 36.8 MPa, 30.5% higher than that of 50 wt % BNNS/ANF composite papers (28.2 MPa). In addition, the heat resistance index (T_HRI) of the 50 wt % BNNS@PDA/ANF composite papers was further increased to 223.1 °C. Overall, our fabricated BNNS@PDA/ANF composite papers possess highly thermal conductivities, excellent mechanical robustness and flexibility, and outstanding thermal stabilities, showing great potential applications in the fields of intelligent wearable equipment, flexible supercapacitors, and flexible electronics.

Interface design for high energy density polymer nanocomposites

This review provides a detailed overview on the latest developments in the design and control of the interface in polymer based composite dielectrics for energy storage applications. The methods employed for interface design in composite systems are described for a variety of filler types and morphologies, along with novel approaches employed to build hierarchical interfaces for multi-scale control of properties. Efforts to achieve a close control of interfacial properties and geometry are then described, which includes the creation of either flexible or rigid polymer interfaces, the use of liquid crystals and developing ceramic and carbon-based interfaces with tailored electrical properties. The impact of the variety of interface structures on composite polarization and energy storage capability are described, along with an overview of existing models to understand the polarization mechanisms and quantitatively assess the potential benefits of different structures for energy storage. The applications and properties of such interface-controlled materials are then explored, along with an overview of existing challenges and practical limitations. Finally, a summary and future perspectives are provided to highlight future directions of research in this growing and important area.

Simultaneously enhanced discharge energy density and efficiency in nanocomposite film capacitors utilizing two-dimensional NaNbO3@Al2O3 platelets

With rapid developments in the consumer electronics market, electrostatic capacitors need to store as much energy as possible within a rather restricted space. In this work, nanocomposite films combining two-dimensional core-shell NaNbO3@Al2O3 platelets (2D NN@AO Ps) and poly(vinylidene-fluoride hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)), featuring excellent energy storage capability, high efficiency, and ultrafast discharge performance, are designed and fabricated. Both the experimental results and finite element simulations confirm the superiority of these 2D NN@AO Ps nanocomposite films in improving the breakdown strength (Eb) and energy storage capability. In particular, the introduction of 3 vol% 2D NN@AO Ps results in much enhanced discharge energy density of 14.59 J cm-3 and outstanding discharge efficiency of 70.1% in NN@AO Ps/P(VDF-HFP) nanocomposite films, which is much greater than that of pure P(VDF-HFP) (7.74 J cm-3). The corresponding nanocomposite films exhibit excellent reliability in energy storage performance under consecutive cycling. Therefore, this research could reveal a new chapter in the study and application of polymer nanocomposites in energy-storage dielectric capacitors.
