Moisture-Permeable, Humidity-Enhanced Gas Barrier Films Based on Organic/Inorganic Multilayers

Development of starch-cellulose composite films with antimicrobial potential

This study explored the structure and performance of starch-based antibacterial films reinforced with black tea cellulose nanocrystals (BT-CNCs). The optimal addition amount of BT-CNCs is 5 % (w/w Starch). This nanocrystal-infused film, incorporating chitosan (CS), ε-polylysine (ε-PL), and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONP) as antibacterial agents, exhibited a smooth, continuous surface. The addition of BT-CNCs and antibacterial agents did not change the group characteristic peaks of the film, but changed the crystallinity slightly. The films, namely St, St/CNCs, St/CNCs/CS, and St/CNCs/ε-P, maintained high light transmittance (above 80 %), except for the St/CNCs/ZnONP film, which effectively shielded UV radiation. The combined use of antibacterial agents and BT-CNCs enhanced the water and oxygen barrier properties of the film. Notably, the St/CNCs/CS film exhibited the lowest solubility (17.74 % ± 0.36) and the highest tensile strength (14.23 ± 0.16 MPa). The antibacterial efficacy of the films decreased in the order of St/CNCs/ZnONP, St/CNCs/ε-PL, and St/CNCs/CS, with a more pronounced inhibitory effect on E. coli compared to S. aureus. This study marries natural waste recycling with cutting-edge food packaging technology, setting a new benchmark for the development of sustainable packaging materials.

Starch-based biodegradable composites: Effects of in-situ re-extrusion on structure and performance

In this study, starch-based biodegradable composites (SDC) were prepared by extruding using thermoplastic starch (TPS, 65%wt), polylactic acid (PLA, 30%wt) and poly (butylene adipate co-terephthalate) (PBAT, 5%wt). Structure and properties of the SDC were compared by performing 1-, 2-, 3-times extrusion. The results show that in-situ re-extrusion refines the TPS in composites and reduces the size of the phase. As the number of extrusions increases, the ester bond of composites at 868 cm-1 disappears, the crystallinity increases, and the thermal stability decreases. Among the three types of composites, the mechanical properties and hydrophobic properties of the material obtained by the 2-times are the most outstanding. Compared with SDC, the elongation at break and Young's modulus of SDC-2 are significantly increased, with an increase of 8.01 % and 1.28 % in the machine direction and an increase of 11.02 % and 1.79 % in the transverse direction respectively. Additionally, water contact angle range of SDC-2 from 98.7° to 101.7°. Therefore, SDC prepared by 2-times in-situ re-extrusion has the best film properties and is an ideal packaging material. This study presents a novel method for fabricating starch-degradable composite films by in-situ re-extrusion, providing new insights into the development of starch packaging materials.

A review of cellulose-based derivatives polymers in fabrication of gas separation membranes: Recent developments and challenges

Due to low-cost, sustainability and good mechanical stability, cellulose-based materials are frequently used in fabrication of polymeric gas separation membrane as potential carbohydrate polymers to substitute traditional petrochemical-based materials. In this review, the performance of cellulose-based polymeric membranes i.e. cellulose acetate, cellulose diacetate, cellulose triacetate, ethyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose in the separation of different gases were investigated. This review paper provides the main features and advantages in the fabrication of cellulose-based gas separation membranes. The influence of the functionalization of cellulose on gas separation and permeability performance of related membranes is considered. Influence of different modification procedures such as blending with polymers, nanomaterials and ionic liquids on the gas separation ability of cellulose-based membranes were reviewed. Moreover, a brief inquiry of the potential of cellulose-based gas separation membranes for industrial applications, by examining the performance of different cellulose derivatives and identifying potential strategies for membrane modification and optimization are given, along with the current restrictions and the future perspectives are discussed.

Polylactic Acid/Calcium Stearate Hydrocharging Melt-Blown Nonwoven Fabrics for Respirator Applications

Non-biodegradable polypropylene, which poses a serious threat to the environment, is the most utilized material in air filtration systems. Moreover, under conditions of high temperature and high humidity, the electrostatic charge in melt-blown nonwoven fabrics treated with traditional corona electrets will quickly dissipate. Here, biodegradable polylactic acid, calcium stearate, and an innovative hydrocharging technique are reported to develop environmentally friendly polylactic acid/calcium stearate hydrocharging melt-blown nonwoven fabrics with high charge stability. Compared with polylactic acid melt-blown nonwoven fabrics, the crystallization structure and charge storage of polylactic acid/calcium stearate melt-blown nonwoven fabrics have been greatly improved due to the presence of calcium stearate. In PM0.3, it exhibited a high filtration efficiency (96.78%), a low pressure drop (65.20 Pa), and a good quality factor (0.053 Pa-1), which can meet the N95 respirator standard. Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that the filtration performance remained at a high level (>95.00%) after 2 months. Importantly, based on the test and analysis of surface electrostatic potential, crystallization, and charge storage and distribution, we proposed plausible charge generation and stable storage mechanisms. It demonstrated more potential for electret air filtration and smart respirators as the further possible step of research in the field.

A Hydrotalcite-Based PET Composites with Enhanced Properties for Liquid Milk Packaging Applications

In the present work, the two-phase mixture (HTLc) of hydrotalcite and its oxide were used to improve the barrier properties, UV resistance and antimicrobial activity of Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) for their application in liquid milk packaging. Firstly, CaZnAl-CO₃-LDHs with a two-dimensional layered structure were synthesized by hydrothermal method. CaZnAl-CO₃-LDHs precursors were characterized by XRD, TEM, ICP and dynamic light scattering. A series of PET/HTLc composite films were then prepared, characterized by XRD, FTIR and SEM, and a possible mechanism of the composite films with hydrotalcite was proposed. Barrier properties to water vapor and oxygen have been studied in PET nanocomposites, as well as their antibacterial efficacy by the colony technique and their mechanical properties after exposure to UV irradiation for 24 h. By the presence of 1.5 wt% HTLc in the PET composite film, the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) was reduced by 95.27%, the water vapor transmission rate was reduced by 72.58% and the inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was 83.19% and 52.75%. Moreover, a simulation of the migration process in dairy products was used to prove the relative safety. This research first proposes a safe technique for fabricating hydrotalcite-based polymer composites with a high gas barrier, UV resistance and effective antibacterial activity.

Eco-friendly chitosan@silver/plant fiber membranes for masks with thermal comfortability and self-sterilization

The surgical masks have been essential consumables for public in the COVID-19 pandemic. However, long-time wearing masks will make wearers feel uncomfortable and massive discarded non-biodegradable masks lead to a heavy burden on our environment. In this paper, we adopt degradable chitosan@silver (CS@Ag) core-shell fibers and plant fibers to prepare an eco-friendly mask with excellent thermal comfort, self-sterilization, and antiviral effects. The thermal network of CS@Ag core-shell fibers highly improves the in-plane thermal conductivity of masks, which is 4.45 times higher than that of commercial masks. Because of the electrical conductivity of Ag, the fabricated mask can be electrically heated to warm the wearer in a cold environment and disinfect COVID-19 facilely at room temperature. Meanwhile, the in-situ reduced silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) endow the mask with superior antibacterial properties. Therefore, this mask shows a great potential to address the urgent need for a thermally comfortable, antibacterial, antiviral, and eco-friendly mask.

Mechanically Strong, Thermally Stable Gas Barrier Polyimide Membranes Derived from Carbon Nanotube-Based Nanofluids

Gas barrier membranes with impressive moisture permeability are highly demanded in air or nature gas dehumidification. We report a novel approach using polyetheramine oligomers covalently grafted on the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to engineer liquid-like CNT nanofluids (CNT NFs), which are incorporated into a polyimide matrix to enhance the gas barrier and moisture permeation properties. Benefiting from the featured liquid-like characteristic of CNT NFs, a strong interfacial compatibility between CNTs and the polyimide matrix is achieved, and thus, the resulting membranes exhibit high heat resistance and desirable mechanical strength as well as remarkable fracture toughness, beneficially to withstanding creep, impact, and stress fatigue in separation applications. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy measurements indicate a significant decrease in fractional free volume within the resulting membranes, leading to greatly enhanced gas barrier properties while almost showing full retention of moisture permeability compared to that of the pristine membrane. For membranes with 10 wt % CNT NFs, the gas transmission rates, respectively, decrease 99.9% for CH₄, 94.4% for CO₂, 99.2% for N₂, and 97.9% for O₂ compared with that of the pristine membrane. Most importantly, with the increasing amount of CNT NFs, the hybrid membranes demonstrate a simultaneous increase of barrier performance and permselectivity for H₂O/CH₄, H₂O/N₂, H₂O/CO₂, and H₂O/O₂. All these results make these membranes potential candidates for high-pressure natural gas or hyperthermal air dehydration.

Polyelectrolyte-Assisted Dispersions of Reduced Graphite Oxide Nanoplates in Water and Their Gas-Barrier Application

Dispersion of graphene and related materials in water is needed to enable sustainable processing of these 2D materials. In this work, we demonstrate the capability of branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) to stabilize reduced graphite oxide (rGO) dispersions in water. Atomic force microscopy colloidal probe measurements were carried out to investigate the interaction mechanisms between rGO and the polyelectrolytes (PEs). Our results show that for positive PEs, the interaction appears electrostatic, originating from the weak negative charge of graphene in water. For negative PEs, however, van der Waals forces may result in the formation of a PE shell on rGO. The PE-stabilized rGO dispersions were then used for the preparation of coatings to enhance gas barrier properties of polyethylene terephthalate films using the layer-by-layer self-assembly. Ten bilayers of rGO_BPEI/rGO_PAA resulted in coatings with excellent barrier properties as demonstrated by oxygen transmission rates below detection limits [<0.005 cm³/(m² day atm)]. The observed excellent performance is ascribed to both the high density of the deposited coating and its efficient stratification. These results can enable the design of highly efficient gas barrier solutions for demanding applications, including oxygen-sensitive pharmaceutical products or flexible electronic devices.

Cephalopods-Inspired Rapid Self-Healing Nanoclay Composite Coatings with Oxygen Barrier and Super-Bubble-Phobic Properties

Polymeric coatings with oxygen barrier properties are an important technology in food packaging that can extend the shelf life of food products and reduce waste. Although a typical technology in practical use is the deposition of metal or inorganic materials between multilayer films to reduce the oxygen transmission rate, once the film is damaged, oxygen permeates through the damaged area, damaging the packaged food. In addition, nanobrick wall structures consisting of nanoplatelet bricks have the potential to replace barrier films made of inorganic materials; however, they similarly lack repair performance or have slow repair speed despite having repair performance. Inspired by the rapid self-repair mechanism of cephalopods, the study develops a nanoclay-containing coating that can rapidly repair surface damage via water within 10 s. By introducing CaCl₂-derived counterions and montmorillonite for nanobrick wall structures into polyelectrolyte multilayers stacked by layer-by-layer self-assembly, the noncovalent polymer network is increased, resulting in mimicking a strong cephalopod-derived β-sheet structure and noncovalent intermolecular interactions derived from cephalopods. The high water retention at the surface showed super-bubble-phobicity in water and inhibited gas permeation. The oxygen permeability of the coatings with more than a certain amount of montmorillonite was less than 1/100 of that of bare polyethylene. The ultrafast self-healing gas barrier coating has the potential to be used not only for food products but also for electronics and pharmaceutical packaging and gas separation applications. The key technology developed in this study provides novel insights into the construction of self-healing membranes made of composite materials and will contribute to the formation of a sustainable society.

High-efficiency CO2 separation using hybrid LDH-polymer membranes

Membrane-based gas separation exhibits many advantages over other conventional techniques; however, the construction of membranes with simultaneous high selectivity and permeability remains a major challenge. Herein, (LDH/FAS)_n-PDMS hybrid membranes, containing two-dimensional sub-nanometre channels were fabricated via self-assembly of unilamellar layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets and formamidine sulfinic acid (FAS), followed by spray-coating with a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) layer. A CO₂ transmission rate for (LDH/FAS)₂₅-PDMS of 7748 GPU together with CO₂ selectivity factors (SF) for SF(CO₂/H₂), SF(CO₂/N₂) and SF(CO₂/CH₄) mixtures as high as 43, 86 and 62 respectively are observed. The CO₂ permselectivity outperforms most reported systems and is higher than the Robeson or Freeman upper bound limits. These (LDH/FAS)_n-PDMS membranes are both thermally and mechanically robust maintaining their highly selective CO₂ separation performance during long-term operational testing. We believe this highly-efficient CO₂ separation performance is based on the synergy of enhanced solubility, diffusivity and chemical affinity for CO₂ in the sub-nanometre channels.

Synthesis, DFT studies, fabrication, and optical characterization of the [ZnCMC]TF polymer (organic/inorganic) as an optoelectronic device

Nano-Brick Wall Architectures Account for Super Oxygen Barrier PET Film by Quadlayer Assembly of Polyelectrolytes and α-ZrP Nanoplatelets

Nanobrick wall hybrid coating with super oxygen barrier properties were fabricated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film using a quadlayer (QL) assembly of polyelectrolytes and nanoplateles. A quadlayer assembly consists of three repeat units of polyacrylic acid (PAA), poly (dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA) and layered α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP). PDDA with positive charges can assemble alternatively with both α-ZrP and PAA with negative charges to form nanobrick wall architectures on the surface of PET film via the electrostatic interaction. The lamellar structure of α-ZrP platelets and the dense QL assembly coating can greatly reduce the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of PET film. Compared to pristine PET film, the OTR of PET (QL)19 is reduced from 57 to 0.87 cc/m²/day. Moreover, even with 19 QLs coating, PET (QL)19 composite film is still with an optical transparency higher than 90% and a haze lower than 10%. Therefore, the transparent PET (QL)n composite films with super oxygen barrier properties show great potential application in food packaging and flexible electronic packaging.
