In Situ Electrodeposition of Cobalt Sulfide Nanosheet Arrays on Carbon Cloth as a Highly Efficient Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution and Reduction Reactions

Sulfur-Vacancy Engineering Accelerates Rapid Surface Reconstruction in Ni-Co Bimetal Sulfide Nanosheet for Urea Oxidation Electrocatalysis

Developing a highly efficient catalyst for electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is not only beneficial for the degradation of urea pollutants in wastewater but also provides a benign route for hydrogen production. Herein, a sulfur-vacancy (Sv) engineering is proposed to accelerate the formation of metal (oxy)hydroxide on the surface of Ni-Co bimetal sulfide nanosheet arrays on nickel foam (Sv-CoNiS@NF) for boosting the urea oxidation electrocatalysis. As a result, the obtained Sv-CoNiS@NF demonstrates an outstanding electrocatalytic UOR performance, which requires a low potential of only 1.397 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode to achieve the current density of 100 mA cm-2. The ex situ Raman spectra and density functional theory calculations reveal the key roles of the Sv site and Co9S8 in promoting the electrocatalytic UOR performance. This work provides a new strategy for accelerating the transformation of electrocatalysts to active metallic (oxy)hydroxide for urea electrolysis via engineering the surface vacancies.

A Review of Transition Metal Boride, Carbide, Pnictide, and Chalcogenide Water Oxidation Electrocatalysts

Transition metal borides, carbides, pnictides, and chalcogenides (X-ides) have emerged as a class of materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Because of their high earth abundance, electrical conductivity, and OER performance, these electrocatalysts have the potential to enable the practical application of green energy conversion and storage. Under OER potentials, X-ide electrocatalysts demonstrate various degrees of oxidation resistance due to their differences in chemical composition, crystal structure, and morphology. Depending on their resistance to oxidation, these catalysts will fall into one of three post-OER electrocatalyst categories: fully oxidized oxide/(oxy)hydroxide material, partially oxidized core@shell structure, and unoxidized material. In the past ten years (from 2013 to 2022), over 890 peer-reviewed research papers have focused on X-ide OER electrocatalysts. Previous review papers have provided limited conclusions and have omitted the significance of "catalytically active sites/species/phases" in X-ide OER electrocatalysts. In this review, a comprehensive summary of (i) experimental parameters (e.g., substrates, electrocatalyst loading amounts, geometric overpotentials, Tafel slopes, etc.) and (ii) electrochemical stability tests and post-analyses in X-ide OER electrocatalyst publications from 2013 to 2022 is provided. Both mono and polyanion X-ides are discussed and classified with respect to their material transformation during the OER. Special analytical techniques employed to study X-ide reconstruction are also evaluated. Additionally, future challenges and questions yet to be answered are provided in each section. This review aims to provide researchers with a toolkit to approach X-ide OER electrocatalyst research and to showcase necessary avenues for future investigation.

Ultrafast and Scalable Fabrication of Coordination Polymer Films on Network Substrates via Thermal Current-Induced Dewetting

Coordination polymers are among the most favored active materials by researchers due to their broad application prospects. However, most of them are usually difficult to directly process into applicable devices because of their unsatisfied processability. One process of great concern for researchers is the in situ preparation of the coordination polymer on the applicable substrate, especially for the favored network substrates with good mechanical properties and 3D porous structure, which could provide obvious convenience and facilitation in the application process. Herein, we present an ultrafast and scalable thermal current-induced dewetting strategy to obtain uniform coordination polymer film in situ on network substrates, which could enable unprecedented convenience to obtain directly usable coordination polymer composites such as practical catalytic electrodes with excellent electrocatalytic performance. The proposed thermal current-induced dewetting method provides a highly adaptable and efficient practical production approach to integrate coordination polymer materials with network substrates and also provides new inspiration for understanding and applying the dewetting process on complex 3D network substrates.

Construction of Nitrogen-Doped Biphasic Transition-Metal Sulfide Nanosheet Electrode for Energy-Efficient Hydrogen Production via Urea Electrolysis

Urea-assisted hybrid water splitting is a promising technology for hydrogen (H₂ ) production, but the lack of cost-effective electrocatalysts hinders its extensive application. Herein, it is reported that Nitrogen-doped Co₉ S₈ /Ni₃ S₂ hybrid nanosheet arrays on nickel foam (N-Co₉ S₈ /Ni₃ S₂ /NF) can act as an active and robust bifunctional catalyst for both urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which could drive an ultrahigh current density of 400 mA cm^-2 at a low working potential of 1.47 V versus RHE for UOR, and gives a low overpotential of 111 mV to reach 10 mA cm^-2 toward HER. Further, a hybrid water electrolysis cell utilizing the synthesized N-Co₉ S₈ /Ni₃ S₂ /NF electrode as both the cathode and anode displays a low cell voltage of 1.40 V to reach 10 mA cm^-2 , which can be powered by an AA battery with a nominal voltage of 1.5 V. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations decipher that N-doped heterointerfaces can synergistically optimize Gibbs free energy of hydrogen and urea, thus accelerating the catalytic kinetics of HER and UOR. This work significantly advances the development of the promising cobalt-nickel-based sulfide as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for energy-saving electrolytic H₂ production and urea-rich innocent wastewater treatment.

Cuboid-like phosphorus-doped metal-organic framework-derived CoSe2 on carbon cloth as an advanced bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst for rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are regarded as attractive devices for electrochemical energy storage and conversion due to their outstanding electrochemical performance, low price, and high safety. However, it remains a challenge to design a stable and efficient bifunctional oxygen catalyst that can accelerate the reaction kinetics and improve the performance of ZABs. Herein, a phosphorus-doped transition metal selenide/carbon composite catalyst derived from metal-organic frameworks (P-CoSe₂/C@CC) is constructed by a self-supporting carbon cloth structure through a simple solvothermal process with subsequent selenization and phosphatization. The P-CoSe₂/C@CC exhibits a low overpotential of 303.1 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 toward the oxygen evolution reaction and an obvious reduction peak for the oxygen reduction reaction. The abovementioned electrochemical performances for the P-CoSe₂/C@CC are attributed to the specific architecture, the super-hydrophilic surface, and the P-doping effect. Remarkably, the homemade zinc-air battery based on our P-CoSe₂/C@CC catalyst shows an expected peak power density of 124.4 mW cm^-2 along with excellent cycling stability, confirming its great potential application in ZABs for advanced bifunctional electrocatalysis.

Tuning the d-Band States of Ni-Based Serpentine Materials via Fe3+ Doping for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The serpentine germanate materials are promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts due to their unique layered crystal structure and electronic structure. However, the catalytic activities still need to be improved to satisfy the practical applications. Adjusting the d-band center of metal active site to balance the adsorption and desorption of intermediates is considered an effective approach to improve the OER activity. In this work, an element dopant strategy was proposed to optimize the d-band state of Ni₃Ge₂O₅(OH)₄ serpentine to improve the OER activity. The density functional theory calculations revealed that Fe³⁺ doping increased the d-band center of the Ni₃Ge₂O₅(OH)₄ serpentine, which optimized the adsorption strength of intermediates on surface Ni and Fe atoms so that the Fe³⁺ doped Ni₃Ge₂O₅(OH)₄ (Ni_2.25Fe_0.75Ge₂O₅(OH)₄) exhibited much reduced Gibbs free energy changes in the rate-determining step compared with pristine serpentine. Inspired by the theoretical calculations, the Ni_xFe_3-xGe₂O₅(OH)₄ nanosheets with different amounts of doped Fe³⁺ were designed and synthesized. The structural characterizations indicated that Fe³⁺ was successfully doped into Ni₃Ge₂O₅(OH)₄ and replaced the Ni²⁺. The Fe³⁺ doped Ni_xFe_3-xGe₂O₅(OH)₄ nanosheets showed greatly improved OER activity than Ni₃Ge₂O₅(OH)₄ and Fe₃Ge₂O₅(OH)₄. Further electrochemical analysis illustrated that Fe³⁺ doping reduced the adsorptive/formative resistance of intermediates and the charge transfer resistance and facilitated the kinetic process of OER. The in situ Raman spectra indicated that the Fe³⁺ doped Ni₃Ge₂O₅(OH)₄ possesses a more active Ni-O bond than pristine Ni₃Ge₂O₅(OH)₄. This work provides an effective strategy to tune the d-band center of serpentines for efficient electrocatalytic OER.

Electrochemical preparation of nano/micron structure transition metal-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction

Electrochemical water splitting is a promising technology for hydrogen production and sustainable energy conversion, but the existing electrolytic cells lack a sufficient number of robust and highly active anodic electrodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Electrochemical synthesis technology provides a feasible route for the preparation of independent OER electrodes with high utilization of active sites, fast mass transfer, and a simple preparation process. A comprehensive review of the electrochemical synthesis of nano/microstructure transition metal-based OER materials is provided. First, some fundamentals of electrochemical synthesis are introduced, including electrochemical synthesis strategies, electrochemical synthesis substrates, the electrolyte used in electrochemical synthesis, and the combination of electrochemical synthesis and other synthesis methods. Second, the morphology and properties of electrochemical synthetic materials are summarized and introduced from the viewpoint of structural design. Then, the latest progress regarding the development of transition metal-based OER electrocatalysts is reviewed, including the classification of metals/alloys, oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, phosphides, selenides, and other transition metal compounds. In addition, the oxygen evolution mechanism and rate-determining steps of transition metal-based catalysts are also discussed. Finally, the advantages, challenges, and opportunities regarding the application of electrochemical techniques in the synthesis of transition metal-based OER electrocatalysts are summarized. This review can provide inspiration for researchers and promote the development of water splitting technology.

Metal-Supported Biochar Catalysts for Sustainable Biorefinery, Electrocatalysis and Energy Storage Applications: A Review

Biochar (BCH) is a carbon-based bio-material produced from thermochemical conversion of biomass. Several activation or functionalization methods are usually used to improve physicochemical and functional properties of BCHs. In the context of green and sustainable future development, activated and functionalized biochars with abundant surface functional groups and large surface area can act as effective catalysts or catalyst supports for chemical transformation of a range of bioproducts in biorefineries. Above the well-known BCH applications, their use as adsorbents to remove pollutants are the mostly discussed, although their potential as catalysts or catalyst supports for advanced (electro)catalytic processes has not been comprehensively explored. In this review, the production/activation/functionalization of metal-supported biochar (M-BCH) are scrutinized, giving special emphasis to the metal-functionalized biochar-based (electro)catalysts as promising catalysts for bioenergy and bioproducts production. Their performance in the fields of biorefinery processes, and energy storage and conversion as electrode materials for oxygen and hydrogen evolutions, oxygen reduction, and supercapacitors, are also reviewed and discussed.

Defect Engineering of Carbon-based Electrocatalysts for Rechargeable Zinc-air Batteries

Rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are considered as one of the most promising electrochemical energy devices due to their various unique advantages. Oxygen electrocatalysis, involving the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), determines the overall performance of zinc-air batteries. Therefore, the development of highly efficient bifunctional ORR/OER catalysts is critical for the large-scale application of ZABs. Carbon-based nanomaterials have been widely reported to be efficient electrocatalysts toward both ORR and OER. The enhanced activity of these electrocatalysts are usually attributed to different doping defects, synergistic effects and even the intrinsic carbon defects. Herein, an overview of the defect engineering in carbon-based electrocatalysts for ORR and OER is provided. The different types of intrinsic carbon defects and strategies for the generation of other defects in carbon-based electrocatalysts are presented. The interaction of heteroatoms doped carbon and transition metals (TMs) is also explored. In the end, the existing challenges and future perspectives on defect engineering are discussed.

Recent Advances on Self-Supported Arrayed Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysts for Flexible Solid-State Zn-Air Batteries

Flexible solid-state Zn-air batteries have been rapidly developed benefiting from the uprising demand for wearable electronic devices, wherein the air electrode integrated with efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts plays an important role to achieve high performance. Binder-free self-supported bifunctional catalysts can provide large active surface area, fast electron transport path, easy ion diffusion, and excellent structural stability and flexibility, thus acting as promising flexible air cathodes. In this review, recent advances on the application of nanoarrayed electrocatalysts as air cathodes in flexible Zn-air batteries are reviewed. Especially, various types of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts, including carbonaceous material arrays, transition metal compound arrays, transition metal/carbon arrays, transition metal compound/carbon arrays, and other hybrid arrays, are discussed. The applications of flexible Zn-air batteries with two configurations (i.e., planar stacks and cable fibers) are also introduced. Finally, perspectives on the optimization of arrayed air cathodes for future development to achieve high-performance flexible Zn-air batteries are shared.

Organic template-based ZnO embedded Mn3O4 nanoparticles: synthesis and evaluation of their electrochemical properties towards clean energy generation

To deal with fossil fuel depletion and the rise in global temperatures caused by fossil fuels, cheap and abundant materials are required, in order to fulfill energy demand by developing high-performance fuel cells and electrocatalysts. In this work, a natural organic agent has been used to synthesize nano-structured ZnO/Mn₃O₄ with high surface area and enhanced electrocatalytic performance. Upon pre-annealing treatment, mixed metal oxide precipitates are formed due to the complex formation between a metal oxide and organic extract. The thermally annealed mixed oxide ZnO/Mn₃O₄ was characterized by XRD diffractometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified methyldecylamine as a major stabilizing agent of the synthesized nanomaterial. Using a Tauc plot, the calculated band energy for the synthesized ZnO/Mn₃O₄ mixed metal oxide was 1.65 eV. Moreover, we have demonstrated the effects of incorporated organic compounds on the surface chemistry, morphology and electrochemical behavior of ZnO/Mn₃O₄. The phyto-functionalized ZnO/Mn₃O₄ was deposited on Ni-foam for electrocatalytic studies. The fabricated electrode revealed good performance with low over-potential and Tafel slope, suggesting it to be suitable as a potential catalyst for water splitting application, in particular for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The overall findings of the current study provide a cost-effective and efficient organic template for functionalization and sustainable fabrication of ZnO/Mn₃O₄ nanomaterial for application as an electrocatalyst.

Amorphous FeNi-bimetallic infinite coordination polymers as advanced electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction

Amorphous bimetallic coordination polymers have been prepared by a mild room temperature solution phase method and utilized as an OER electrocatalyst. Their excellent performance with an overpotential of 228 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and a Tafel slope of 30.3 mV dec^-1 exhibits their great potential in the field of the OER.
