Scalable Approach to Construct Self-Assembled Graphene-Based Films with An Ordered Structure for Thermal Management

Graphene-based polymer composites in thermal management: materials, structures and applications

Graphene, with its high thermal conductivity (k), excellent mechanical properties, and thermal stability, is an ideal filler for developing advanced high k and heat dissipation materials. However, creating graphene-based polymer nanocomposites (GPNs) with high k remains a significant challenge to meet the demand for efficient heat dissipation. Here, the effects of graphene material and structure on thermal properties are investigated from both microscopic and macroscopic perspectives. Initially, it briefly introduces the influence of graphene structural parameters on its intrinsic k, along with summarizing methods to adjust these parameters. Various techniques for establishing different thermal conductivity pathways at the macroscopic scale (including filler hybridization, 3D networks, horizontal alignment, and vertical alignment) are reviewed, along with their respective advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, we discuss the applications of GPNs as thermal interface materials (TIMs), phase change materials (PCMs), and smart responsive thermal management materials in the field of thermal management. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives of GPN research are discussed. This review offers researchers a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in GPNs for thermal management and guidance for developing the next generation of thermally conductive polymer composites.

High-Performance Thermal Interface Materials with Magnetic Aligned Carbon Fibers

Thermal interface materials with high thermal conductivity and low hardness are crucial to the heat dissipation of high-power electronics. In this study, a high magnetic field was used to align the milled carbon fibers (CFs, 150 μm) in silicone rubber matrix to fabricate thermal interface materials with an ordered and discontinuous structure. The relationship among the magnetic field density, the alignment degree of CFs, and the properties of the resulting composites was explored by experimental study and theoretical analysis. The results showed higher alignment degree and enhanced thermal conductivity of composites under increased magnetic flux density within a certain curing time. When the magnetic flux density increased to 9 T, the CFs showed perfect alignment and the composite showed a high thermal conductivity of 11.76 W/(m·K) with only 20 vol% CF loading, owing to the ordered structure. Meanwhile, due to the low filler loading and discontinuous structure, a low hardness of 60~70 (shore 00) was also realized. Their thermal management performance was further confirmed in a test system, revealing promising applications for magnetic aligned CF–rubber composites in thermal interface materials.

Recent Progress in Graphene/Polymer Nanocomposites

Nanocomposites, multiphase solid materials with at least one nanoscaled component, have been attracting ever-increasing attention because of their unique properties. Graphene is an ideal filler for high-performance multifunctional nanocomposites in light of its superior mechanical, electrical, thermal, and optical properties. However, the 2D nature of graphene usually gives rise to highly anisotropic features, which brings new opportunities to tailor nanocomposites by making full use of its excellent in-plane properties. Here, recent progress on graphene/polymer nanocomposites is summarized with emphasis on strengthening/toughening, electrical conduction, thermal transportation, and photothermal energy conversion. The influence of the graphene configuration, including layer number, defects, and lateral size, on its intrinsic properties and the properties of graphene/polymer nanocomposites is systematically analyzed. Meanwhile, the role of the interfacial interaction between graphene and polymer in affecting the properties of nanocomposites is also explored. The correlation between the graphene distribution in the matrix and the properties of the nanocomposite is discussed in detail. The key challenges and possible solutions are also addressed. This review may provide a constructive guidance for preparing high-performance graphene/polymer nanocomposite in the future.

Modern evolution of paper-based analytical devices for wearable use: from disorder to order

Paper devices have attracted great attention for their rapid development in multiple fields, such as life sciences, biochemistry, and materials science. When manufacturing paper chips, flexible materials, such as cellulose paper or other porous flexible membranes, can offer several advantages in terms of their flexibility, lightweight, low cost, safety and wearability. However, traditional cellulose paper sheets with chaotic cellulose fiber constitutions do not have special structures and optical characteristics, leading to poor repeatability and low sensitivity during biochemical sensing, limiting their wide application. Recent evidence showed that the addition of ordered structure provides a promising method for manufacturing intelligent flexible devices, making traditional flexible devices with multiple functions (microfluidics, motion detection and optical display). There is an urgent need for an overall summary of the evolution of paper devices so that readers can fully understand the field. Hence, in this review, we summarized the latest developments in intelligent paper devices, starting with the fabrication of paper and smart flexible paper devices, in the fields of biology, chemistry, electronics, etc. First, we outlined the manufacturing methods and applications of both traditional cellulose paper devices and modern smart devices based on pseudopaper (order paper). Then, considering different materials, such as cellulose, nitrocellulose, nature sourced photonic crystals (photonic crystals sourced from nature directly) and artificial photonic crystals, we summarized a new type of smart flexible device containing an ordered structure. Next, the applications of paper devices in biochemical sensing, wearable sensing, and cross-scale sensing were discussed. Finally, we summarized the development direction of this field. The aim of this review is to take an integral cognition approach to the development of smart flexible paper devices in multiple fields and promote communications between materials science, biology, chemistry and electrical science.

Highly Thermally Conductive Fluorinated Graphene Films with Superior Electrical Insulation and Mechanical Flexibility

Graphene-based heat-spreading films have captured high attention in academic study and commercial applications because of their extremely high thermal conductivity and desired flexibility. However, the electrical conductivity limits their utilizations in many electronic fields. Herein, to address this problem, fluorinated graphene (F-graphene) that is exfoliated from commercial fluorinated graphite was first used to prepare the flexible free-standing composite film via vacuum filtration of uniform poly(vinyl alcohol)-assisted F-graphene suspension. The well-organized alignment of F-graphene lamellas makes the composite film show an ultrahigh in-plane thermal conductivity of 61.3 W m^-1 K^-1 at 93 wt % F-graphene. Despite at such high filler loading, the fabricated F-graphene film still possesses a superior electrical insulation property. Therefore, these results suggest that F-graphene, as the novel thermally conductive filler, demonstrates fascinating characters in the preparation of a thermally conductive yet electrically insulating nanocomposite.
