Electronic Noses: From Gas-Sensitive Components and Practical Applications to Data Processing

Artificial olfaction, also known as an electronic nose, is a gas identification device that replicates the human olfactory organ. This system integrates sensor arrays to detect gases, data acquisition for signal processing, and data analysis for precise identification, enabling it to assess gases both qualitatively and quantitatively in complex settings. This article provides a brief overview of the research progress in electronic nose technology, which is divided into three main elements, focusing on gas-sensitive materials, electronic nose applications, and data analysis methods. Furthermore, the review explores both traditional MOS materials and the newer porous materials like MOFs for gas sensors, summarizing the applications of electronic noses across diverse fields including disease diagnosis, environmental monitoring, food safety, and agricultural production. Additionally, it covers electronic nose pattern recognition and signal drift suppression algorithms. Ultimately, the summary identifies challenges faced by current systems and offers innovative solutions for future advancements. Overall, this endeavor forges a solid foundation and establishes a conceptual framework for ongoing research in the field.

A review of piezoelectric MEMS sensors and actuators for gas detection application

Piezoelectric microelectromechanical system (piezo-MEMS)-based mass sensors including the piezoelectric microcantilevers, surface acoustic waves (SAW), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer (PMUT), and film bulk acoustic wave resonators (FBAR) are highlighted as suitable candidates for highly sensitive gas detection application. This paper presents the piezo-MEMS gas sensors' characteristics such as their miniaturized structure, the capability of integration with readout circuit, and fabrication feasibility using multiuser technologies. The development of the piezoelectric MEMS gas sensors is investigated for the application of low-level concentration gas molecules detection. In this work, the various types of gas sensors based on piezoelectricity are investigated extensively including their operating principle, besides their material parameters as well as the critical design parameters, the device structures, and their sensing materials including the polymers, carbon, metal-organic framework, and graphene.

Increased CO2 Affinity and Adsorption Selectivity in MOF-801 Fluorinated Analogues

The novel Zr^IV-based perfluorinated metal-organic framework (PF-MOF) [Zr₆O₄(OH)₄(TFS)₆] (ZrTFS) was prepared under solvent-free conditions using the commercially available tetrafluorosuccinic acid (H₂TFS) as a bridging ditopic linker. Since H₂TFS can be seen as the fully aliphatic and perfluorinated C₄ analogue of fumaric acid, ZrTFS was found to be isoreticular to zirconium fumarate (MOF-801). The structure of ZrTFS was solved and refined from X-ray powder diffraction data. Despite this analogy, the gas adsorption capacity of ZrTFS is much lower than that of MOF-801; in the former, the presence of bulky fluorine atoms causes a considerable window size reduction. To have PF-MOFs with more accessible porosity, postsynthetic exchange (PSE) reactions on (defective) MOF-801 suspended in H₂TFS aqueous solutions were carried out. Despite the different H₂TFS concentrations used in the PSE process, the exchanges yielded two mixed-linker materials of similar minimal formulae [Zr₆O₄(μ₃-OH)₄(μ₁-OH)_2.08(H₂O)_2.08(FUM)_4.04(HTFS)_1.84] (PF-MOF1) and [Zr₆O₄(μ₃-OH)₄(μ₁-OH)_1.83(H₂O)_1.83(FUM)_4.04(HTFS)_2.09] (PF-MOF2) (FUM^2- = fumarate), where the perfluorinated linker was found to fully replace the capping acetate in the defective sites of pristine MOF-801. CO₂ and N₂ adsorption isotherms collected on all samples reveal that both CO₂ thermodynamic affinity (isosteric heat of adsorption at zero coverage, Q_st) and CO₂/N₂ adsorption selectivity increase with the amount of incorporated TFS^2-, reaching the maximum values of 30 kJ mol^-1 and 41 (IAST), respectively, in PF-MOF2. This confirms the beneficial effect coming from the introduction of fluorinated linkers in MOFs on their CO₂ adsorption ability. Finally, solid-state density functional theory calculations were carried out to cast light on the structural features and on the thermodynamics of CO₂ adsorption in MOF-801 and ZrTFS. Due to the difficulties in modeling a defective MOF, an intermediate structure containing both linkers in the framework was also designed. In this structure, the preferential CO₂ adsorption site is the tetrahedral pore in the "UiO-66-like" structure. The extra energy stabilization stems from a hydrogen bond interaction between CO₂ and a hydroxyl group on the inorganic cluster.

Energy Transfer in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Fluorescence Sensing

The development of materials with outstanding performance for sensitive and selective detection of multiple analytes is essential for the development of human health and society. Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) have controllable surface and pore sizes and excellent optical properties. Therefore, a variety of LMOF-based sensors with diverse detection functions can be easily designed and applied. Furthermore, the introduction of energy transfer (ET) into LMOFs (ET-LMOFs) could provide a richer design concept and a much more sensitive and accurate sensing performance. In this review, we focus on the recent five years of advances in ET-LMOF-based sensing materials, with an emphasis on photochemical and photophysical mechanisms. We discuss in detail possible energy transfer processes within a MOF structure or between MOFs and guest materials. Finally, the possible sensing applications of the ET-LMOF-based sensors are highlighted.

Material Screening for Gas Sensing Using an Electronic Nose: Gas Sorption Thermodynamic and Kinetic Considerations

To detect multiple gases in a mixture, one must employ an electronic nose or sensor array, composed of several materials, as a single material cannot resolve all the gases in a mixture accurately. Given the many candidate materials, choosing the right combination of materials to be used in an array is a challenging task. In a sensor whose sensing mechanism depends on a change in mass upon gas adsorption, both the equilibrium and kinetic characteristics of the gas-material system dictate the performance of the array. The overarching goal of this work is twofold. First, we aim to highlight the impact of thermodynamic characteristics of gas-material combination on array performance and to develop a graphical approach to rapidly screen materials. Second, we aim to highlight the need to incorporate the gas sorption kinetic characteristics to provide an accurate picture of the performance of a sensor array. To address these goals, we have developed a computational test bench that incorporates a sensor model and a gas composition estimator. To provide a generic study, we have chosen, as candidate materials, hypothetical materials that exhibit equilibrium characteristics similar to those of metal-organic frameworks. Our computational studies led to key learnings, namely, (1) exploit the shape of the sensor response as a function of gas composition for material screening purposes for gravimetric arrays; (2) incorporate both equilibrium and kinetics for gas composition estimation in a dynamic system; and (3) engineer the array by accounting for the kinetics of the materials, the feed gas flow rate, and the size of the device.

Non-injective gas sensor arrays: identifying undetectable composition changes

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are nanoporous materials with good prospects as recognition elements for gas sensors owing to their adsorptive sensitivity and selectivity. A gravimetric, MOF-based sensor functions by measuring the mass of gas adsorbed in a MOF. Changes in the gas composition are expected to produce detectable changes in the mass of gas adsorbed in the MOF. In practical settings, multiple components of the gas adsorb into the MOF and contribute to the sensor response. As a result, there are typically many distinct gas compositions that produce the same single-sensor response. The response vector of a gas sensor array places multiple constraints on the gas composition. Still, if the number of degrees of freedom in the gas composition is greater than the number of MOFs in the sensor array, the map from gas compositions to response vectors will be non-injective (many-to-one). Here, we outline a mathematical method to determine undetectable changes in gas composition to which non-injective gas sensor arrays are unresponsive. This is important for understanding their limitations and vulnerabilities. We focus on gravimetric, MOF-based gas sensor arrays. Our method relies on a mixed-gas adsorption model in the MOFs comprising the sensor array, which gives the mass of gas adsorbed in each MOF as a function of the gas composition. The singular value decomposition of the Jacobian matrix of the adsorption model uncovers (i) the unresponsive directions and (ii) the responsive directions, ranked by sensitivity, in gas composition space. We illustrate the identification of unresponsive subspaces and ranked responsive directions for gas sensor arrays based on Co-MOF-74 and HKUST-1 aimed at quantitative sensing of CH₄/N₂/CO₂/C₂H₆mixtures relevant to natural gas sensing.

Neutral Nitrogen Donor Ligand-based MOFs for Sensing Applications

Neutral nitrogen donor (N-donor) ligand-based MOFs, with their enticing features inclusive of facile synthesis, labile metal-ligand bond, framework flexibility, atomic level tunability renders them appealing in molecular recognition-based studies. Intriguingly, the flexibility in such systems (owing to weaker metal-nitrogen bonds) promote maximization of host-analyte interactions, which is critical for the manifestation of a signaling response. Such host-analyte interactions can be tapped by discerning any change in the physical properties associated with the system, such as optical, fluorometric, chemiresistive, magnetic, dielectric constant, mass. This minireview presents a brief discussion on the various types of signal transduction pathways unveiled hitherto using neutral N-donor ligand-based MOFs and the fundamental insight into the signal's origin. Moreover, an elaborate compilation of the recent examples in this field has been presented. Also, the untapped prospects have been highlighted, which may serve as a beacon to drive future research.

Tailorable infrared emission of microelectromechanical system-based thermal emitters with NiO films for gas sensing

Infrared gas sensors hold great promise in the internet of things and artificial intelligence. Making infrared light sources with miniaturized size, reliable and tunable emission is essential but remains challenging. Herein, we present the tailorability of radiant power and the emergence of new emission wavelength of microelectromechanical system (MEMS)-based thermal emitters with nickel oxide (NiO) films. The coating of NiO on emitters increases top surface emissivity and induces the appearance of new wavelengths between 15 and 19 µm, all of which have been justified by spectroscopic methods. Furthermore, a sensor array is assembled for simultaneous monitoring of concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), humidity, and temperature. The platform shows selective and sensitive detection at room temperature toward CO₂ and CH₄ with detection limits of around 50 and 1750 ppm, respectively, and also shows fast response/recovery and good recyclability. The demonstrated emission tailorability of MEMS emitters and their usage in sensor array provide novel insights for designing and fabricating optical sensors with good performance, which is promising for mass production and commercialization.

A Highly Efficient and Stable Composite of Polyacrylate and Metal-Organic Framework Prepared by Interface Engineering for Direct Air Capture

We present a kilogram-scale experiment for assessing the prospects of a novel composite material of metal-organic framework (MOF) and polyacrylates (PA), namely NbOFFIVE-1-Ni@PA, for trace CO₂ capture. Through the interfacial enrichment of metal ions and organic ligands as well as heterogeneous crystallization, the sizes of microporous NbOFFIVE-1-Ni crystals are downsized to 200-400 nm and uniformly anchored on the macroporous surface of PA via interfacial coordination, forming a unique dual-framework structure. Specifically, the NbOFFIVE-1-Ni@PA composite with a loading of 45.8 wt % NbOFFIVE-1-Ni yields a superior CO₂ uptake (ca. 1.44 mol·kg^-1) compared to the pristine NbOFFIVE-1-Ni (ca. 1.30 mol·kg^-1) at 400 ppm and 298 K, indicating that the adsorption efficiency of NbOFFIVE-1-Ni has been raised by 2.42 times. Meanwhile, the time cost for realizing a complete adsorption/desorption cycle in a fluidized bed has been shortened to 25 min, and the working capacity (ca. 0.84 mol·kg^-1) declines only by 1.3% after 2000 cycles. The device is capable of harvesting 2.1 kg of CO₂ per kilogram of composite daily from simulated air with 50% relatively humidity (RH). To the best of our knowledge, the excellent adsorption/desorption performances of NbOFFIVE-1-Ni@PA position it as the most advantageous and practically applicable candidate for trace CO₂ capture.

Functionalized Reduced Graphene Oxide Thin Films for Ultrahigh CO2 Gas Sensing Performance at Room Temperature

The demand for carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas detection is increasing nowadays. However, its fast detection at room temperature (RT) is a major challenge. Graphene is found to be the most promising sensing material for RT detection, owing to its high surface area and electrical conductivity. In this work, we report a highly edge functionalized chemically synthesized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) thin films to achieve fast sensing response for CO₂ gas at room temperature. The high amount of edge functional groups is prominent for the sorption of CO₂ molecules. Initially, rGO is synthesized by reduction of GO using ascorbic acid (AA) as a reducing agent. Three different concentrations of rGO are prepared using three AA concentrations (25, 50, and 100 mg) to optimize the material properties such as functional groups and conductivity. Thin films of three different AA reduced rGO suspensions (AArGO25, AArGO50, AArGO100) are developed and later analyzed using standard FTIR, XRD, Raman, XPS, TEM, SEM, and four-point probe measurement techniques. We find that the highest edge functionality is achieved by the AArGO25 sample with a conductivity of ~1389 S/cm. The functionalized AArGO25 gas sensor shows recordable high sensing properties (response and recovery time) with good repeatability for CO₂ at room temperature at 500 ppm and 50 ppm. Short response and recovery time of ~26 s and ~10 s, respectively, are achieved for 500 ppm CO₂ gas with the sensitivity of ~50 Hz/µg. We believe that a highly functionalized AArGO CO₂ gas sensor could be applicable for enhanced oil recovery, industrial and domestic safety applications.

Evaluating the Fitness of Combinations of Adsorbents for Quantitative Gas Sensor Arrays

Robust, high-performance gas-sensing technology has applications in industrial process monitoring and control, air quality monitoring, food quality assessment, medical diagnosis, and security threat detection. Nanoporous materials (NPMs) could be utilized as recognition elements in a gas sensor because they selectively adsorb gas. Imitating mammalian olfaction, sensor arrays of NPMs use measurements of the adsorbed mass of gas in a set of distinct NPMs to infer the gas composition. Modular and adjustable NPMs, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), offer a vast material space to sample for combinations to comprise a sensor array that produces a response pattern rich with information about the gas composition. Herein, we frame quantitative gas sensing, using arrays of NPMs, as an inverse problem, which equips us with a method to evaluate the fitness of a proposed combination of NPMs in a sensor array. While the (routine) forward problem is to use an adsorption model to predict the mass of gas adsorbed in each NPM when immersed in a gas mixture of a given composition, the inverse problem is to predict the gas composition from the observed masses of adsorbed gas in the NPMs of the array. The fitness of a given combination of NPMs for gas sensing is then determined by the conditioning of its inverse problem: the prediction of the gas composition provided by a fit (unfit) combination of NPMs is insensitive (sensitive) to inevitable errors in the measurements of the mass of gas adsorbed in the NPMs. For illustration, we use experimentally measured adsorption data to analyze the conditioning of the inverse problem associated with a (IRMOF-1 and HKUST-1) CH₄/CO₂ sensor array.

Highly Selective Metal-Organic Framework Textile Humidity Sensor

The increase in demand and popularity of smart textiles brings new and innovative ideas to develop a diverse range of textile-based devices for our daily life applications. Smart textile-based sensors (TEX sensors) become attractive due to the potential to replace current solid-state sensor devices with flexible and wearable devices. We have developed a smart textile sensor for humidity detection using a metal-organic framework (MOF) as an active thin-film layer. We show for the first time the use of the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique for the deposition of a MIL-96(Al) MOF thin film directly onto the fabrics containing interdigitated textile electrodes for the fabrication of a highly selective humidity sensor. The humidity sensors were made from two different types of textiles, namely, linen and cotton, with the linen-based sensor giving the best response due to better coverage of MOF. The TEX sensor showed a reproducible response after multiple cycles of measurements. After 3 weeks of storage, the sensor showed a moderate decrease in response. Moreover, TEX sensors showed a high level of selectivity for the detection of water vapors in the presence of several volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Interestingly, the selectivity is superior to some of the previously reported MOF-coated solid-state interdigitated electrode devices and textile sensors. The method herein described is generic and can be extended to other textiles and coating materials for the detection of toxic gases and vapors.

Realization of an Ultrasensitive and Highly Selective OFET NO2 Sensor: The Synergistic Combination of PDVT-10 Polymer and Porphyrin-MOF

Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are emerging as competitive candidates for gas sensing applications due to the ease of their fabrication process combined with the ability to readily fine-tune the properties of organic semiconductors. Nevertheless, some key challenges remain to be addressed, such as material degradation, low sensitivity, and poor selectivity toward toxic gases. Appropriately, a heterojunction combination of different sensing layers with multifunctional capabilities offers great potential to overcome these problems. Here, a novel and highly sensitive receptor layer is proposed encompassing a porous 3D metal-organic framework (MOF) based on isostructural-fluorinated MOFs acting as an NO₂ specific preconcentrator, on the surface of a stable and ultrathin PDVT-10 organic semiconductor on an OFET platform. Here, with this proposed combination we have unveiled an unprecedented 700% increase in sensitivity toward NO₂ analyte in contrast to the pristine PDVT-10. The resultant combination for this OFET device exhibits a remarkable lowest detection limit of 8.25 ppb, a sensitivity of 680 nA/ppb, and good stability over a period of 6 months under normal laboratory conditions. Further, a negligible response (4.232 nA/%RH) toward humidity in the range of 5%-90% relative humidity was demonstrated using this combination. Markedly, the obtained results support the use of the proposed novel strategy to achieve an excellent sensing performance with an OFET platform.

Curating Metal-Organic Frameworks To Compose Robust Gas Sensor Arrays in Dilute Conditions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), tunable, nanoporous materials, are alluring recognition elements for gas sensing. Mimicking human olfaction, an array of cross-sensitive, MOF-based sensors could enable analyte detection in complex, variable gas mixtures containing confounding gas species. Herein, we address the question: given a set of MOF candidates and their adsorption properties, how do we select the optimal subset to compose a sensor array that accurately and robustly predicts the gas composition via monitoring the adsorbed mass in each MOF? We first mathematically formulate the MOF-based sensor array problem under dilute conditions. Instructively, the sensor array can be viewed as a linear map from gas composition space to sensor array response space defined by the matrix H of Henry coefficients of the gases in the MOFs. Characterizing this mapping, the singular value decomposition of H is a useful tool for evaluating MOF subsets for sensor arrays, as it determines the sensitivity of the predicted gas composition to measurement error, quantifies the magnitude of the response to changes in composition, and recovers which direction in gas composition space elicits the largest/smallest response. To illustrate, on the basis of experimental adsorption data, we curate MOFs for a sensor array with the objective of determining the concentration of CO₂ and SO₂ in the gas phase.

Methanol and Humidity Capacitive Sensors Based on Thin Films of MOF Nanoparticles

The successful development of modern gas sensing technologies requires high sensitivity and selectivity coupled to cost effectiveness, which implies the necessity to miniaturize devices while reducing the amount of sensing material. The appealing alternative of integrating nanoparticles of a porous metal-organic framework (MOF) onto capacitive sensors based on interdigitated electrode (IDE) chips is presented. We report the deposition of MIL-96(Al) MOF thin films via the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method on the IDE chips, which allowed the study of their gas/vapor sensing properties. First, sorption studies of several organic vapors like methanol, toluene, chloroform, etc. were conducted on bulk MOF. The sorption data revealed that MIL-96(Al) presents high affinity toward water and methanol. Later on, ordered LB monolayer films of MIL-96(Al) particles of ∼200 nm were successfully deposited onto IDE chips with homogeneous coverage of the surface in comparison to conventional thin film fabrication techniques such as drop-casting. The sensing tests showed that MOF LB films were selective for water and methanol, and short response/recovery times were achieved. Finally, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of a porous thin film of Parylene C (thickness ∼250-300 nm) was performed on top of the MOF LB films to fabricate a thin selective layer. The sensing results showed an increase in the water selectivity and sensitivity, while those of methanol showed a huge decrease. These results prove the feasibility of the LB technique for the fabrication of ordered MOF thin films onto IDE chips using very small MOF quantities.

Dual Functionalized CuMOF-Based Composite for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Herein, we utilized our previously reported highly porous CuMOF, {[Cu₂(L)(H₂O)₂]·(5DMF)·(4H₂O)}_n, decorated with amine and trifluoromethyl functional groups for energy storage application. This robust framework in CuMOF enhances the chemical and thermal stabilities as well as improves the interfacial binding interactions. The poor conductivity of CuMOF usually restricts its practical utility in energy storage systems, due to which rGO was introduced along with CuMOF to form a CuMOF/rGO composite (1) through a facile ultrasonication technique. The synergistic effects between CuMOF and rGO induce a dramatic enhancement in specific capacitance (462 F g^-1 at 0.8 A g^-1) of 1 with a cycle life of 93.75% up to 1000 cycles. The results highlight 1 as an emerging contestant for next generation supercapacitors.
