Performance Deficiency Improvement of CNT-Based Strain Sensors by Magnetic-Induced Patterning

As one of the most promising candidates, ubiquitous cycling degradation seriously affects the accuracy of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based sensors, and the reason for which is still unclear. Herein, the cycling degradation mechanism of CNT-based strain sensors has been detected by comparatively investigating the difference between the sensing behavior of CNT- and silver nanowire (Ag-NW)-based sensors, from which the microcrack-disconnection and unfolding-tunneling effects have been clarified as the sensing mechanism for Ag-NWs and CNT-based strain sensors, respectively. Furthermore, sliding and unfolding behaviors resulting from the weak interaction between CNTs have been proven to cause degradation. Correspondingly, a creative magnetically induced patterning method is proposed by utilizing magnetic nanoparticles as obstacles to prevent the CNTs from relative sliding. Benefiting from the advantageous factor, the performance deficiency of the CNT-based sensor has been overcome, and the sensitivity was significantly improved up to 5.2 times with accurate human activity detection. The competitive sensing performance of the CNTs demonstrates the reference value of the deficiency mechanism and solution scheme obtained in this study.

Flexible Hybrid Electronics Nanofiber Electrodes with Excellent Stretchability and Highly Stable Electrical Conductivity for Smart Clothing

In this paper, a side-by-side, dual-nozzle electrospinning process was used to prepare a flexible hybrid electronics (FHE) material with excellent stretchable properties. A highly stable electrical conductivity was also imparted to the resulting membrane electrodes using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and carbon-based nanomaterials of different structures. The AgNP/carbon-based nanomaterials were coated onto bicomponent polymer nanofibers (composed of polyurethane (PU) and polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)) on the nanofiber membrane. The FHE nanofiber electrodes were finally integrated into clothing designed to accurately measure human body sensing signals (e.g., electrocardiography (ECG) and electromyography (EMG) signals). To effectively increase the high electrical conductivity, a polymer-type dispersant (polyisobutylene-b-poly(oxyethylene)-b-polyisobutylene, a triblock copolymer) was used to effectively and stably disperse AgNPs with different particle sizes and carbon-based nanomaterials with different geometric dimensions (e.g., zero-dimensional carbon black, one-dimensional carbon nanotubes, and two-dimensional graphene) through non-covalent adsorption. Moreover, the bicomponent PVDF-PU nanofibers were immersed in a mixed dispersant of AgNPs and carbon-based nanomaterials at low concentrations, and thermal post-treatment was conducted to improve the electrical conductivity. The AgNP/graphene oxide (GO) nanofiber electrode exhibited a continuous phase with a stable material microstructure after 5000 repetitions of 50% tension-tension fatigue testing. The waveform pattern obtained from the proposed AgNP/GO nanofiber electrode was compared with those of traditional ECG and EMG electrodes. The nanofiber web electrode treated with organic/inorganic mixed dispersants and verified via tests of its electrical and fatigue properties was found to be suitable for long-term ECG and EMG monitoring, and it has excellent potential in wearable smart sensors.

Flexible Cotton Fiber-Based Composite Films with Excellent Bending Stability and Conductivity at Cryogenic Temperature

The commonly used metal thin film or resin-based flexible composites cannot meet the requirement of cryogenic flexible conductive functional devices, which may be used in space exploration, biomedicine, and other science and technology fields facing a very low temperature environment, because of their poor fatigue and anti-bending properties at cryogenic temperature. In this work, a composite based on functionalized cotton fibers is proposed to achieve the application requirement of flexible electrical systems at cryogenic temperature. A conductive composite film with optimized strength and flexibility was obtained by controlling the size distribution of cotton fibers and adjusting the interaction force among the cotton fibers. The obtained composite film could endure over 10,000 times of bending at 77 K (-196 °C), with the resistance changing less than ±5%, indicating its excellent mechanical flexibility and electrical stability at cryogenic temperature. Finally, a demonstration was successfully conducted by applying the composite film as a flexible electrical connection to a robot arm, which worked at 77 K. This work might be a reference significance for the application of flexible conductors from room temperature to cryogenic temperature.
