Design, Synthesis, and Electrofluorochromism of New Triphenylamine Derivatives with AIE-Active Pendent Groups

Exploiting Mixed Valence Charge Transfer for Electrochromic and Electrofluorochromic Use

An asymmetric mixed valence fluorophore with two different electron rich termini was investigated as a dual-role active material for electrochromism and electrofluorochromism. The fluorescence quantum yield (Φfl) and emission wavelength of the fluorophore were dependent on solvent polarity. The quantum yield of the material in an electrolyte gel, on a glass substrate and in a device was 40 %, 20 % and 13 % respectively. The fluorophore further underwent two near-simultaneous electrochemical oxidations. The first oxidation resulted in a 1000 nm red shift in the absorption to broadly absorb in the NIR, corresponding to the intervalence charge transfer (IVCT). Whereas the second oxidation led to a perceived green color at 715 nm with the extinction of the NIR absorbing IVCT. Owing to the dissymmetry of the fluorophore along with its two unique oxidation sites, the IVCT gives rise to a mixed valence transfer charge (MVCT). The coloration efficiency of the fluorophore in both solution and a device was 1433 and 200 cm2 C-1, respectively. The fluorescence intensity could be reversibly modulated electrochemically. The photoemission intensity of the fluorophore was modulated with applied potential in an operating electrochromic/electrofluorochromic device. Both the dual electrochromic and the electrofluorochromic behavior of the fluorophore were demonstrated.

Electrofluorochromic Switching of Heat-Induced Cross-Linkable Multi-Styryl-Terminated Triphenylamine and Tetraphenylethylene Derivatives

High-performance electrochromic (EC) and electrofluorochromic (EFC) materials have garnered considerable interest due to their diverse applications in smart windows, optoelectronics, optical displays, military camouflage, etc. While many different EC and EFC polymers have been reported, their preparation often requires multiple steps, and their polymer molecular weights are subjected to batch variation. In this work, we prepared two triphenylamine (TPA)-based and two tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based derivatives functionalized with terminal styryl groups via direct Suzuki coupling with (4-vinylphenyl)boronic acid and vinylboronic acid pinacol ester. The two novel TPE derivatives exhibited green-yellow aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The EC and EFC properties of pre- and post-thermally treated derivatives spin-coated onto ITO-glass substrates were studied. While all four derivatives showed modest absorption changes with applied voltages up to +2.4 V, retaining a high degree of optical transparency, they exhibited obvious EFC properties with the quenching of blue to yellow fluorescence with IOFF/ON contrast ratios of up to 7.0. The findings therefore demonstrate an elegant approach to preparing optically transparent, heat-induced, cross-linkable styryl-functionalized EFC systems.

Robust luminogens as cutting-edge tools for efficient light emission in recent decades

Blue luminogens play a vital role in white lighting and potential metal-free fluorescent materials and their high-lying excited states contribute to harvesting triplet excitons in devices. However, in TADF-OLEDs (ΔEST < 0.1 eV), although T1 excitons transfer to S1via RISC with 100% IQE, the longer lifetime of blue TADF suffers from efficiency roll-off (RO). In this case, hybridized local and charge transfer (HLCT) materials have attracted significant interest in lighting owing to their 100% hot exciton harvesting and enhanced efficiency. Both academics and industrialists widely use the HLCT strategy to improve the efficiency of fluorescent organic light-emitting diodes (FOLEDs) by harvesting dark triplet excitons through the RISC process. Aggregation-induced emissive materials (AIEgens) possess tight packing in the aggregation state, and twisted AIEgens with HLCT behaviour have a shortened conjugation length, inducing blue emission and making them suitable candidates for OLED applications. TTA-OLEDs are used in commercial BOLEDs because of their moderate efficiency and reasonable operation lifetime. In this review, we discuss the devices based on TTA fluorophores, TADF fluorophores, HLCT fluorophores, AIEgens and HLCT-sensitized fluorophores (HLCT-SF), which break through the statistical limitations.

Ultrabright Dibenzofluoran-Based Polymer Dots with NIR-IIa Emission Maxima and Unusual Large Stokes Shifts for 3D Rotational Stereo Imaging

Emerging organic molecules with emissions in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) region are garnering significant attention. Unfortunately, achieving accountable organic emission intensity over the NIR-IIa (1300 nm) region faces challenges due to the intrinsic energy gap law. Up to the current stage, all reported organic NIR-IIa emitters belong to polymethine-based dyes with small Stokes shifts (<50 nm) and low quantum yield (QY; ≤0.015%). However, such polymethines have proved to cause self-absorption with constrained emission brightness, limiting advanced development in deep-tissue imaging. Here a new NIR-IIa scaffold based on rigid and highly conjugated dibenzofluoran core terminated by amino-containing moieties that reveal emission peaks of 1230-1305 nm is designed. The QY is at least 10 times higher than all synthesized or reported NIR-IIa polymethines with extraordinarily large Stokes shifts of 370-446 nm. DBF-BJ is further prepared as a polymer dot to demonstrate its in vivo 3D stereo imaging of mouse vasculature with a 1400 nm long-pass filter.

Photophysical Analysis of Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) Luminogens Based on Triphenylamine and Thiophene: Insights into Emission Behavior in Solution and PMMA Films

Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) luminogens have garnered significant interest due to their distinctive applications in different applications. Among the diverse molecular architectures, those based on triphenylamine and thiophene hold prominence. However, a comprehensive understanding of the deactivation mechanism both in solution and films remains lacking. In this study, we synthesized and characterized spectroscopically two AIE luminogens: 5-(4-(bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amino)phenyl)thiophene-2-carbaldehyde (TTY) and 5'-(4-(bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amino)phenyl)-[2,2'-bithiophene]-5-carbaldehyde (TTO). Photophysical and theoretical analyses were conducted in both solution and PMMA films to understand the deactivation mechanism of TTY and TTO. In diluted solutions, the emission behavior of TTY and TTO is influenced by the solvent, and the deactivation of the excited state can occur via locally excited (LE) or twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state. In PMMA films, rotational and translational movements are constrained, necessitating emission solely from the LE state. Nevertheless, in the PMMA film, excimers-like structures form, resulting in the emergence of a longer wavelength band and a reduction in emission intensity. The zenith of emission intensity occurs when molecules are dispersed at higher concentrations within PMMA, effectively diminishing the likelihood of excimer-like formations. Luminescent Solar Concentrators (LSC) were fabricated to validate these findings, and the optical efficiency was studied at varying concentrations of luminogen and PMMA.

Palladium-Catalyzed C2-Selective Direct Arylation of Benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-Dioxides with Arylboronic Acids

A novel oxidative cross-coupling of benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxides with arylboronic acids was reported. The efficient reaction occurred at the C2-position via C-H activation, followed by Pd(II)-catalyzed arylation. Furthermore, a series of C2-arylated products with significant photoluminescence properties have been synthesized and characterized, which illustrates the potential applications of our method in the aggregation-induced emission field.

Aroyl-S,N-Ketene Acetals: Luminous Renaissance of a Class of Heterocyclic Compounds

Aroyl-S,N-ketene acetals represent a peculiar class of heterocyclic merocyanines, compounds bearing pronounced and rather short dipoles with great push-pull characteristics that define their rich properties. They are accessible via a wide array of synthetic concepts and procedures, ranging from addition-elimination and condensation procedures up to rearrangement and metal-mediated reactions. With our work from 2020, aroyl-S,N-ketene acetals have been identified as powerful and promising dyes with pronounced and vastly tunable solid-state emission and aggregation-induced emission properties. One characteristic trademark of this class of dye molecules is the level of control that could be exerted, and which was thoroughly explored. Based on these results, the field was opened to extend the system to bi- and multichromophoric systems by the full toolkit of synthetic organic chemistry thus giving access to even more exciting properties and manifolded substance libraries capitalizing on the AIE properties. This review aims at outlining the reaction-based principles that allow for a swift and facile access to aroyl-S,N-ketene acetals, their methodical and structural evolution and the plethora of fluorescence and aggregation properties.

Survey of Recent Advances in Molecular Fluorophores, Unconjugated Polymers, and Emerging Functional Materials Designed for Electrofluorochromic Use

In this review, recent advances that exploit the intrinsic emission of organic materials for reversibly modulating their intensity with applied potential are surveyed. Key design strategies that have been adopted during the past five years for developing such electrofluorochromic materials are presented, focusing on molecular fluorophores that are coupled with redox-active moieties, intrinsically electroactive molecular fluorophores, and unconjugated emissive organic polymers. The structural effects, main challenges, and strides toward addressing the limitations of emerging fluorescent materials that are electrochemically responsive are surveyed, along with how these can be adapted for their use in electrofluorochromic devices.

Four-Winged Propeller-Shaped Indole-Modified and Indole-Substituted Tetraphenylethylenes: Greenish-Blue Emitters with Aggregation-Induced Emission Features for Conventional Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is an extraordinary photochemical phenomenon described by Tang's group in 2001, where the aggregation of some organic molecules enhances their light emission by limiting intramolecular activity in the aggregate state. This phenomenon offers new opportunities for researchers due to its potential applications in optoelectronics, energy, and biophysics. Tetraphenylethylenes (TPEs) are reliable AIE luminogens with a wide range of successful applications in material chemistry. To expand the library of AIE-active TPEs, both a series of TPE analogues, in which the phenyl rotor has been replaced by the indole ring, and indole-substituted TPE derivatives were designed and synthesized through vinyl-aryl and aryl-aryl bond formations using the Suzuki coupling reaction. Efficient synthetic routes that delivered indole-modified and indole-substituted TPEs have been developed, and almost all heterocyclic TPE analogues have demonstrated AIE behavior. Furthermore, to test whether the indole ring can be diversified, two title compounds were converted to a series of bis(indolyl)methane (BIM), and these BIM-TPE materials showed typical AIE properties. Interestingly, two compounds indicated a solvent vapor fuming reversible switch between bright blue emission and greenish-yellow emission. Upon fuming with dichloromethane, their fluorescence spectra showed 8 and 32 nm red-shift and could return to the original state after fuming with hexane. Furthermore, we have explored the effects of replacing the phenyl ring in TPE with indole together with the substitution of TPE with indole ring(s) on the performance of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) device applications. In addition, density functional theory calculations; the optical, electrochemical, light emission, electroluminescence characteristics; and admittance spectroscopic analysis of OLED devices of four representative TPEs have been investigated in detail. As a result, the indole-TPEs are potential blue emitters with AIE features for conventional OLEDs, which is a significant color in displays and lighting.

Highly sensitive detection of Tb3+ and ATP based on a novel asymmetric anthracene derivative

A novel fluorescent sensor based on an asymmetric anthracene derivative (SSAPA) was designed and synthesized. Using this molecule, a rapid and sensitive assay for detecting Tb³⁺ and ATP in aqueous solutions was established. The SSAPA molecule had excellent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) performance and good aqueous dispersion ability. This molecule could coordinate with Tb³⁺ and the fluorescence quenched linearly with the increase in the concentration of Tb³⁺ from 0.005 to 1.2 μM. Since both Tb³⁺ and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) have strong binding ability, ATP can compete with Tb³⁺ from the SSAPA/Tb³⁺ complex leading to fluorescence recovery. In this way, a brand-new fluorescent "turn-on" assay for ATP in the range from 0.01 to 0.4 μM was developed using the Tb³⁺-based complex probe. The detection limits for Tb³⁺ and ATP both reached single-digit nanomole per millilitre (2.8 nM and 4.5 nM, respectively), which demonstrated that this method has high sensitivity. Besides, Tb³⁺ and ATP also could be well detected in other complex environments such as real water samples or serum samples. This study provides a feasible assay for detecting trace amounts of Tb³⁺ and ATP in aqueous solutions.

Gel-Based Luminescent Conductive Materials and Their Applications in Biosensors and Bioelectronics

The gel is an ideal platform for fabricating materials for bio-related applications due to its good biocompatibility, adjustable mechanical strength, and flexible and diversified functionalization. In recent decades, gel-based luminescent conductive materials that possess additional luminescence and conductivity simultaneously advanced applications in biosensors and bioelectronics. Herein, a comprehensive overview of gel-based luminescent conductive materials is summarized in this review. Gel-based luminescent conductive materials are firstly outlined, highlighting their fabrication methods, network structures, and functions. Then, their applications in biosensors and bioelectronics fields are illustrated. Finally, challenges and future perspectives of this emerging field are discussed with the hope of inspire additional ideas.

Photo-Electroswitchable Arylaminoazobenzenes

Azobenzenes appended with a redox-active arylamino group (redox auxiliary, RA) are prepared and shown to undergo fast, complete, and catalytic Z→E azo isomerization upon electron loss from the RA unit of the azobenzene. The RA-azo structures can be reversibly (E→Z→E)_n cycled by sequential photo- and electrostimulation. Due to the robust nature of the RA^•+-azo radical cation chain carrying species, initiation of electron transfer (ET) catalysis occurs at low levels (1.0-0.04 mol %) of catalytic loading and is effective even at Z-RA-azo concentrations of 10^-4-10^-5 M, yielding TONs (turnover numbers) of 100-2300 under such dilute conditions. The RA-azo Z→E conversion is demonstrated using chemical oxidation (redox switching), electrochemical oxidation (electro switching), and photochemical oxidation (photoredox switching). The Z→E acceleration is shown to be at least 2 × 10⁹-fold for RA-azo 5. DFT calculations on methyl yellow suggest that a N-centered radical cation of the RA group stabilizes the Z→E N-N twist transition state of the RA^•+-azo, yielding a large reduction in the barrier for RA^•+-azo compared to neutral RA-azo. The RA-azo structure class has nanomechanical features that can be toggled with photo- and electrostimulation, the latter offering a quick switch for complete Z→E conversion.

Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Gels: Fabrications, Functions, and Applications

Chromophores that exhibit aggregation-induced emission (i.e., aggregation-induced emission luminogens [AIEgens]) emit intense fluorescence in their aggregated states, but show negligible emission as discrete molecular species in solution due to the changes in restriction and freedom of intramolecular motions. As solvent-swollen quasi-solids with both a compact phase and a free space, gels enable manipulation of intramolecular motions. Thus, AIE-active gels have attracted significant interest owing to their various distinctive properties and promising application potential. Herein, a comprehensive overview of AIE-active gels is provided. The fabrication strategies employed are detailed, and the applications of AIEgens are summarized. In addition, the gel functions arising from the AIE moieties are revealed, along with their structure-property relationships. Furthermore, the applications of AIE-active gels in diverse areas are illustrated. Finally, ongoing challenges and potential means to address them are discussed, along with future perspectives on AIE-active gels, with the overall aim of inspiring research on novel materials and ideas.

Simultaneously achieving high capacity storage and multilevel anti-counterfeiting using electrochromic and electrofluorochromic dual-functional AIE polymers

With the advent of the big data era, information storage and security are becoming increasingly important. However, high capacity information storage and multilevel anti-counterfeiting are typically difficult to achieve simultaneously. To address this challenge, herein, two electrochromic and electrofluorochromic dual-functional polymers with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics were rationally designed and facilely prepared. Upon applying voltages, the absorption and fluorescence spectra of the AIE polymers can undergo reversible changes, accompanied by variation of their color and emission. By utilizing the controllable characteristics of the polymers, dual-mode display devices were fabricated via a simple spraying technique. More interestingly, a four-dimensional color code device was constructed by adding color change multiplexing to the two-dimensional space, thereby achieving high capacity information storage. Moreover, the color code device can also be applied in the multilevel anti-counterfeiting area. The encrypted information can be dynamically converted under different voltages. Thus, the AIE polymers show great promise for applications in multidimensional information storage and dynamic anti-counterfeiting, and the design strategy may provide a new avenue for advanced information storage and high security technology.

Recent Advances on Fabrication of Polymeric Composites Based on Multicomponent Reactions for Bioimaging and Environmental Pollutant Removal

As the core of polymer chemistry, manufacture of functional polymers is one of research hotspots over the past several decades. Various polymers are developed for diverse applications due to their tunable structures and unique properties. However, traditional step-by-step preparation strategies inevitably involve some problems, such as separation, purification, and time-consuming. The multicomponent reactions (MCRs) are emerging as environmentally benign synthetic strategies to construct multifunctional polymers or composites with pendant groups and designed structures because of their features, such as efficient, fast, green, and atom economy. This mini review summarizes the latest advances about fabrication of multifunctional fluorescent polymers or adsorptive polymeric composites through different MCRs, including Kabachnik-Fields reaction, Biginelli reaction, mercaptoacetic acid locking imine reaction, Debus-Radziszewski reaction, and Mannich reaction. The potential applications of these polymeric composites in biomedical and environmental remediation are also highlighted. It is expected that this mini-review will promote the development preparation and applications of functional polymers through MCRs.

A Versatile Aggregation-induced Emission Fluorescent Probe for Visible Detection of pH

By tactfully structuring a luminescent molecule as an accurate pH probe with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature, it is significant to overcome aggregation-caused quenching of emitted light in practice. Herein, we present a simple AIE-active fluorescence probe for pH detection on the basis of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) with wide response range and high sensitivity reaction. The donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) style probe utilized a conjugated structural hybrid of the electron-withdrawing nitrile group and electron-donating hydroxyl as well as dimethylamino groups for fluorescent platform. The AIE-active probe possesses good fluorescence under water fraction up to 90% in mixed MeOH/water system. Furthermore, it can be used in profiling and visualization of pH detection in MeOH/water system at f_w = 90% under UV 365 nm lamp. What's more, the probe can be employed to be a broad range test paper of pH detection, paving the way for low-cost practical applications.

Multicolored Cathodically Coloring Electrochromism and Electrofluorochromism in Regioisomeric Star-Shaped Carbazole Dibenzofurans

In this work, a series of fluorescent cathodically coloring electrochromic (EC) small molecules o-, m-, and p-DBFDCz with 3,5-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzene (DCz) linked to dibenzofuran (DBF) at different substitutional positions were synthesized and fully characterized. These compounds are electroactive and undergo quasi-reversible two-step single-electron reduction generating radical anions and dianions. The absorptions of o-, m-, and p-DBFDCz in the neutral states lie in the UV region (λ_onset ≈ 350 nm), showing high transparency, while the absorption of their reduced states can be largely tuned across the visible region through driving voltage and substitutional positions. Initially generated spectroelectrochemically radical anions show absorption in the short-wavelength region of ∼380-500 nm with weak broad absorptions at longer wavelengths. On further reduction, these bands disappear on the cost of growing intense bands from dianions at longer wavelengths of 500-700 nm with some tail absorptions in the shorter-wavelength region. This renders the colors of the EC devices based on these materials, which are changed from green to red, yellow to magenta, and light to deep blue for o-, m-, and p-DBFDCz, respectively, covering four legs of the L*a*b* color space. Besides excellent optical contrast (>90%) and high coloration efficiency (up to 504 cm² C^-1), the fluorescence observed in solution of neutral o-, m-, and p-DBFDCz can be modulated between the fluorescence and quenched states by direct electrochemical redox reactions. Both EC and electrofluorochromic (EFC) processes are reversible on cycling. This research demonstrates the feasibility of developing multifunctional EC/EFC materials with multicolored electrochromism through exploiting electrochemical properties of traditional fluorescent small molecules.

Amplified electrochemiluminescence signals promoted by the AIE-active moiety of D-A type polymer dots for biosensing

Three-component conjugated polymers of a strong donor-acceptor (D-A) type could be synthesized by Pd-catalyzed Suzuki coupling polymerization reaction of 1,2-bis(4-bromophenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene (M-1) with 9-octyl-3,6-bis(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)-9H-carbazole (M-2) and 4,6-bis((E)-4-bromostyryl)-2,2-difluoro-5-phenyl-2H-1l3,3,2l4-dioxaborinine (M-3). Among them, P-1 and P-2 with high TPE ratios at 0.95 and 0.9 showed obvious aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior; in contrast P-3 with a low TPE ratio at 0.8 showed an aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) phenomenon. In particular, the three resulting polymer dots (P-1 to P-3 Pdots) exhibited a 200 mV lower electrochemiluminescence (ECL) potential due to their strong D-A electronic structure. Most importantly, the ECL signals of Pdots could be enhanced as high as 3 times by increasing their AIE-active TPE moiety ratios from 0.8 (P-3) to 0.95 (P-1) via the band gap emission process. Herein, P-1 Pdots with the strongest ECL signal were successfully used as ECL biosensors for the detection of catechol, epinephrine and dopamine with detection limits of 1, 7 and 3 nM, respectively. This work provides a new strategy for developing highly sensitive ECL biosensors by the smart structure design of the AIE-active Pdots.

Luminescence Tunable Europium and Samarium Complexes: Reversible On/Off Switching and White-Light Emission

Single-molecule functional materials with luminescence tunable by external stimuli are of increasing interest due to their application in sensors, display devices, biomarkers, and switches. Herein, new europium and samarium complexes with ligands having triphenylamine (TPA) groups as the redox center and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) as the coordinating groups and diketonate (tta) as the second ligand have been constructed. The complexes show white-light emission in selected solvents for proper mixtures of the emission from Ln³⁺ ions and the ligands. Meanwhile, they exhibit reversible luminescence switching on/off properties by controlling the external potential owing to intramolecular energy transfer from the Ln³⁺ ions to the electrochemically generated radical cation of TPA^•+. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations have been performed to study the electronic spectra. The proposed intramolecular energy transfer processes have been verified by density functional theory (DFT) studies.

A novel triphenylamine-based bis-Schiff bases fluorophores with AIE-Activity as the hydrazine fluorescence turn-off probes and cell imaging in live cells

Developing a specific and sensitive method for endogenous hydrazine detection in living systems is valuable to understand its various pathological events. In this work, two novel fluorescent chemosensors (C1, C3) based on triphenylamine Schiff-base derivative and reference dyes (C2, C4) were prepared in relatively high yield (more than 72% yield). The aggregation induced emission (AIE) properties of sensors were investigated through UV-Visible, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction, fluorescence spectrophotometric analyses as well as scanning electron microscope images (SEM). The results indicated that probes C1 and C3 exhibited strong AIE property in DMF/H₂O (1:1, v/v) mixture system with brilliant yellow fluorescence emission (560 nm) observed under 365 nm UV lamp. The experiments of sensing indicated that probes C1 and C3 possessed the sequentially detecting abilities for hydrazine with high sensitivity, specificity as well as an extremely low detection limit (55.1 nM), which was due to blocking of AIE process of probes C1 and C3 by special chemical reaction (-CHN- moiety transformed into -CH₂-NH- group) after hydrazine addition, resulting in the increase in water solubility and a weak emission in aqueous media. Furthermore, ¹H NMR, SEM and fluorescence titration experiment was also conducted to confirm the sensing mechanism. For biological application, probes C1 and C3 presented a good bio-imaging performance and showed the similar fluorescence quenching after adding hydrazine. Therefore, the probes are suitable for the fluorescence imaging of exogenous hydrazine in HeLa cells.

Towards blue AIE/AIEE: Synthesis and Applications in OLEDs of Tetra-/Triphenylethenyl Substituted 9,9-Dimethylacridine Derivatives

Aiming to design blue fluorescent emitters with high photoluminescence quantum yields in solid-state, nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic 9,9-dimethylacridine was refined by tetraphenylethene and triphenylethene. Six tetra-/triphenylethene-substituted 9,9-dimethylacridines were synthesized by the Buchwald-Hartwig method with relatively high yields. Showing effects of substitution patterns, all emitters demonstrated high fluorescence quantum yields of 26–53% in non-doped films and 52–88% in doped films due to the aggregation induced/enhanced emission (AIE/AIEE) phenomena. In solid-state, the emitters emitted blue (451–481 nm) without doping and deep-blue (438–445 nm) with doping while greenish-yellow emission was detected for two compounds with additionally attached cyano-groups. The ionization potentials of the derivatives were found to be in the relatively wide range of 5.43–5.81 eV since cyano-groups were used in their design. Possible applications of the emitters were demonstrated in non-doped and doped organic light-emitting diodes with up to 2.3 % external quantum efficiencies for simple fluorescent devices. In the best case, deep-blue electroluminescence with chromaticity coordinates of (0.16, 0.10) was close to blue color standard (0.14, 0.08) of the National Television System Committee.
