Photochemically Enhanced Selective Adsorption of Gold Ions on Tannin-Coated Porous Polymer Microspheres

Solvothermal Preparation of Microporous Polyureas for Au(III) Adsorption

The enrichment and recovery of gold from wastewater are an alternative method to obtain this noble metal, which benefits reducing hazardous emissions from the conventional ore mining process and reserving natural gold for sustainable development. Inspired by our previous work (Lei et al., Macromol. Rapid Comm. 2022, 2200712), four families of microporous polyureas (mPPUs) with a large surface area (690 m2 g-1) and abundant heteroatom sites have been prepared via the factor-optimized solvothermal protocol. The resultant sample NPU-A starting from 1,5-naphthalene diisocyanate (NDI) and tri(4-aminophenyl) amine (TAPA) exhibits the maximum Au(III) adsorption capacity of 1300 mg g-1 and high selectivity even when the Au(III) concentration is as low as 0.1 mg L-1. This study not only demonstrates the robustness of the high-throughput synthetic strategy but also promotes the investigation of the structure-activity correlation between the mPPU chemical structure and Au(III) adsorption performance.

Tannin complexation with metal ions and its implication on human health, environment and industry: An overview

Tannins, also known as plant polyphenols (PPs), are secondary metabolites widely existing in higher plants and are a kind of natural renewable resource with wide distribution, variety and quantity. Tannin has become an important class of fine chemicals due to the easily modified molecular structure and the properties of antibacterial and antioxidant, combining with protein and complexing with metal ion. Besides being used for tanning leather, tannins are also widely used in wood adhesive, concrete water-reducing agents, oil drilling fluid viscosity-reducing agents, pharmaceutical, mineral processing, water treatment, gas desulfurization, metal anticorrosion, wood anticorrosion, printing and dyeing, liquor clarification, oil antioxidant, daily chemical products and other products preparation. There are two groups of tannins: condensed tannins (CTs) (flavonoid-derived proanthocyanidins) and hydrolysable tannins (HTs) (gallic acid ester-derived). Tannins can form complexes with metals through the ortho-dihydroxyphenolic group(s), especially with transition metals. The structure-activity relationships, stoichiometry, and origin of the insolubility of which were emphasized. Furthermore, this paper proposed an in-depth discussion of the associations of tannins-metal complexes in human health, environment and industries.

Tannin-Assisted Synthesis of Nanocomposites Loaded with Silver Nanoparticles and Their Multifunctional Applications

Nanocomposites have been widely used in many important areas due to their particular physical/chemical properties; however, just though a simple technology, endowing multiple functions into a single nanomaterial for realizing their multifunctional applications is still a challenge. Here, we report a robust method for the facile synthesis of Ag-based multifunctional nanocomposites via using tannin-coated phenol-formaldehyde resin nanospheres (TA-PFRN) as silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) carriers. The thickness of the tannin coating is readily tuned from 50 to 320 nm by regulating the concentration of tannin added. Under the optimal conditions, the TA-PFRN has a 23.8 wt % of Ag NPs loading capacity with only 17.2 nm Ag NP layers. Consequently, the novel TA-PFRN@Ag nanocomposites possess multiple functions and integrated characteristics. As catalysts, the catalytic efficiency of TA-PFRN@Ag is nearly 6 times higher than that of the PFRN@Ag. As highly effective free radical initiators, TA-PFRN@Ag nanocomposites can trigger ultrafast acrylic acid (AA)/acrylamide (AM) polymerization at room temperature (in only a few minutes). As nano-reinforced fillers, the addition of 0.04 wt % nanocomposites can improve the tensile strength of PVA film from 60 to 153.2 MPa. In addition, the nanocomposites can also serve as antibacterial agents, efficiently inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus); as antiultraviolet agents, the presence of TA-PFRN@Ag nanocomposites endows the film/hydrogel materials excellent ultraviolet (UV) shielding. This work provides a novel strategy for the green synthesis of Ag-based multifunctional nanocomposites that show promising applications in catalysis, nanomaterials, and biomedicine.

Stimuli-Responsive Ion Adsorbents for Sustainable Separation Applications

Stimuli-responsive ion absorbents (SRIAs) with reversible ion adsorption and desorption properties have recently attracted immense attention due to their outstanding functionalities for sustainable separation applications. Over the past decade, a series of SRIAs that respond to single or multiple external stimuli (e.g., pH, gas, temperature, light, magnetic, and voltage) have been reported to achieve excellent ion adsorption capacity and selectivity while simultaneously allowing for their reusability. In contrast to traditional adsorbents that are mainly regenerated through chemical additives, SRIAs allow for reduced chemical and even chemical-free regeneration capacities, thereby enabling environmentally friendly and energy-efficient separation technologies. In this review, we systematically summarize the materials and strategies reported to date for synthesizing single-, dual-, and multiresponsive ion adsorbents. Following a discourse on the fundamental mechanisms that govern their adsorption and desorption under various external stimuli, we provide a concise discussion of the regeneration capacity and application of these responsive ion adsorbents for sustainable water desalination, toxic ion removal, and valuable ion extract and recovery. Finally, we discuss the challenges in developing and deploying these promising multifunctional responsive ion adsorbents together with strategies to overcome these limitations and provide prospects for their future.

Highly efficient metal-organic frameworks adsorbent for Pd(II) and Au(III) recovery from solutions: Experiment and mechanism

With the boom of modern industry, the demand for precious metals palladium (Pd) and gold (Au) is increasing. However, the discharge of Pd(II) and Au(III) wastewater has caused environmental pollution and shortage of resources. Here, a new metal-organic frameworks adsorbent (MOF-AFH) was synthesized to efficiently separate Pd(II) and Au(III) from the water. The adsorption behavior of Pd(II) and Au(III) was explored at the same time. When gold and palladium are adsorbed separately, the adsorption capacity of gold and palladium is 389.02 mg/g and 191.27 mg/g, respectively. The equilibration time is 3 h. When gold and palladium coexist, the adsorption capacities of Au(III) and Pd(II) are 238.71 and 115.02 mg/g, respectively. The experimental results show that the adsorption of Pd(II) and Au(III) on MOF-AFH is a single-layer chemical adsorption, which is an endothermic process. MOF-AFH has excellent selectivity and after MOF-AFH is repeatedly used 4 times, the removal effect can still reach more than 90%. The adsorption mechanisms include reduction reaction and chelation with N and O-containing functional groups on the adsorbent. There is also electrostatic interaction for Au(III) adsorption. The adsorbent can be used to efficiently recover gold and palladium from wastewater.

Metal Ion-Directed Functional Metal-Phenolic Materials

Metal ions are ubiquitous in nature and play significant roles in assembling functional materials in fields spanning chemistry, biology, and materials science. Metal-phenolic materials are assembled from phenolic components in the presence of metal ions through the formation of metal-organic complexes. Alkali, alkali-earth, transition, and noble metal ions as well as metalloids interacting with phenolic building blocks have been widely exploited to generate diverse hybrid materials. Despite extensive studies on the synthesis of metal-phenolic materials, a comprehensive summary of how metal ions guide the assembly of phenolic compounds is lacking. A fundamental understanding of the roles of metal ions in metal-phenolic materials engineering will facilitate the assembly of materials with specific and functional properties. In this review, we focus on the diversity and function of metal ions in metal-phenolic material engineering and emerging applications. Specifically, we discuss the range of underlying interactions, including (i) cation-π, (ii) coordination, (iii) redox, and (iv) dynamic covalent interactions, and highlight the wide range of material properties resulting from these interactions. Applications (e.g., biological, catalytic, and environmental) and perspectives of metal-phenolic materials are also highlighted.

Highly Efficient and Selective Gold Recovery Based on Hypercross-Linking and Polyamine-Functionalized Porous Organic Polymers

With the continuous increase of electronic products, there is an urgent need to effectively recover gold from e-waste and other secondary resources other than the original mine. Here, hypercross-linking and polyamine-functionalized porous organic polymers (Pc-POSS-POP) were designed and facially synthesized based on multiple azo-coupling polymerizations between 2,9,16,23-tetraaminophthalocyanine (H₂Pc(NH₂)₄) and octa(aminophenyl)-t8-silsesquioxane (OAPS) for the first time. The reaction requires no metal as a catalyst, thereby benefiting the purification of the product and the industrial scalability. Pc-POSS-POPs possess a hypercross-linking structure, highly conjugated frameworks, nitrogen-rich active sites, and extensively visible and near-infrared light absorption, which was utilized as an absorbent to retrieve Au (III). The results demonstrated that Pc-POSS-POPs have a high adsorption capacity (862.07 mg g^-1) and a rapid adsorption rate toward gold recycling. The maximum adsorption capacity could reach up to 1026.87 mg g^-1 as in the case of light irradiation. Due to the strong N coordination sites and the electronic interaction between the -NH₄⁺ groups of Pc-POSS-POPs and AuCl₄^-, Pc-POSS-POPs also exhibited excellent selectivity toward gold over several coordinated metals [Cr (VI), Co (II), Cd (II), Ni (II), and Hg (II)]. These properties together with the good regenerative ability and superior recyclability demonstrated that Pc-POSS-POPs possess promising potential as hypercross-linking polymers for capturing and recycling of Au (III).

Miniaturization of Anthracene-Containing Nonapeptides for Selective Precipitation/Recovery of Metallic Gold from Aqueous Solutions Containing Gold and Platinum Ions

The separation and recovery of noble metals is increasingly of interest, in particular the recovery of gold nanocrystals, which have applications in medicine and industry. Typically, metal recovery is performed using liquid–liquid extraction or electrowinning. However, it is necessary to develop noble metal recovery systems providing high selectivity in conjunction with a one-pot setup, ready product recovery, and the use of dilute aqueous solutions. In prior work, our group developed a selective gold recovery process using peptides. This previous research showed that RU065, a nonapeptide containing an anthracene moiety (at a concentration of 2.0 × 10−4 M), is capable of selective reduction of HAuCl4 to recover gold from a solution of HAuCl4 and H2PtCl6, each at 5.0 × 10−5 M. However, peptide molecules are generally costly to synthesize, and therefore it is important to determine the minimum required structural features to design non-peptide anthracene derivatives that could reduce operational costs. In this study, we used RU065 together with 23 of its fragment peptides and investigated the selective precipitation/recovery of metallic gold. RU0654–8, a fragment peptide comprising five amino acid residues (having two lysine, one L-isoleusine, and one L-alanine residue (representing six amide groups) along with an L-2-anthrylalanine residue) provided an Au/Pt atomic ratio of approximately 8, which was comparable to that for the full-length original RU065. The structural features identified in this study are expected to contribute to the design of non-peptide anthracene derivatives for low-cost, one-pot selective gold recovery.

Selective Gold Recovery from Homogenous Aqueous Solutions Containing Gold and Platinum Ions by Aromatic Amino Acid-Containing Peptides

There is increasing interest in the development of noble metal separation/recovery processes, especially for applications to “urban mining”. Common separation/recovery processes for noble metals use a solvent (liquid-liquid) extraction technique in hydrometallurgy. However, these processes are time-consuming and not environmentally friendly, because they use organic solvents for sequential metal ion extractions. Electrowinning is an alternative approach for selective metal precipitation that involves controlling the redox potentials of electrodes but requires specialized equipment and generates hydrogen as a byproduct at the cathode surface under dilute conditions. In the present study, we investigated selective gold recovery from a homogenous aqueous solution containing a mixture of dilute HAuCl₄ and H₂PtCl₆ (5.0 × 10⁻⁵ M each) and aromatic amino acid-containing peptides (2.0 × 10⁻⁴ M each). Gold selectivity was determined by analyzing the compositions of the solids and supernatants obtained from the reaction mixtures. A much higher gold selectivity (gold/platinum (Au/Pt) atomic ratio = 7.5) was obtained using an anthracene-containing peptide compared to peptides containing one or two naphthalene ring(s). Our proposed approach is applicable to the sequential separation of several noble metal ions, such as Au, palladium (Pd), Pt, iridium (Ir) and rhodium (Rh), and simply requires developing aromatics suitable for each noble metal of interest.

In situ reduction of chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) for generation of catalytic Au nanoparticle embedded triazine based covalent organic polymer networks

A facile synthetic route was applied to generate Au@COPN-1 hybrids via in situ reduction of Au³⁺ with no additional reducing agent. Au@COPN-1 is a promising catalyst platform and good biocompatibility confirmed by dynamic real-time cell analysis.
