Abstract
Nonconjugated fluorescent polymers devoid of large π-π conjugated structures have received considerable attention due to their significant academic importance and broad application potentials in various fields. Herein, we report an effective strategy to fabricate multifunctional fluorescent amylopectin derivatives and reveal their unique aspects of aggregation-induced emission (AIE), cryogenic long-persistent phosphorescence (~6 s) and excellent processabilities characteristics, which are extremely different from traditional luminogens. These amylopectin-graft-poly(n-butyl acrylate-co-1-vinylimidazole) copolymers (Amylopectin-BVs) prepared by the grafting-from method employing RAFT and experienced subsequently with metal-ligand cross-linking. Specifically, clustering-triggered fluorescent emission or cryogenic long-persistent phosphorescence of amylopectin could be achieved by the aggregation of oxygen and nitrogen atoms along with conformation rigidification, which shows great promise in optoelectronic and biological applications.

Abstract
Herein, a polysaccharide-based fluorescent hydrogel with multi-responsiveness simply implemented by concurrent effects of ionic crosslinking/rehydration processes is presented. Specifically, the alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan are chosen to prepare the interpenetrating polymer matrix while a pair of metal cations has been selectively sequentially integrated to alter hydrogel mechanical and fluorescent properties. Experimental results indicate the hydrogels show tunable fluorescent emission in response to multiple cations and pH conditions, and display a reversible "ON/OFF" fluorescent response to Mn+/ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Moreover, this synergistic ionic crosslinking strategy is proved to be highly effective in preparing multifunctional metallohydrogels possessing robust/anisotropic mechanical properties, typical shape memory and cation/pH-responsive fluorescence performance, and a proof-of-application for bacterial detection and sterilization has also been demonstrated. Therefore, we believe this study would provide new insights into multifunctional luminescent hydrogels for advanced biomedical systems.

Abstract
Hydrogels capable of optical switching have recently become one of the most celebrated materials for information encryption and anti-counterfeiting. However, challenges still remain for developing versatile gel-based platforms with on-demand multistage patterning and multi-dimensional encryption capacities as well as long-term stability. Herein, elaborately designed programmable and multifunctional gels with fascinating anti-swelling (swelling ratios < 0.1%), anti-freezing (below -70 °C), and anti-dehydration (over 3 months) abilities, solvent-induced reversible transparence variations, adjustable fluorescence, self-healing (86% in stress and 94% in strain), Fe3+-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium (EDTA·2Na)-induced reversible shape memory, and fluorescence off/on switch capabilities are facilely fabricated based on glycidyl methacrylate functionalized graphene quantum dots and Al3+ cross-linked gelatin and polyacrylic acid. Employing a simple mask photopolymerization or welding technique, various patterns can be readily and hierarchically encrypted on-demand into a single gel label, which can be further fixed into complex multi-dimensional architectures while quenching fluorescence after the treatment with Fe3+ to achieve high-security-level information encryption originating from the synergistic effects of the above multifunctions. The encrypted multi-level information can only be stepwise decrypted by an authorized individual who has mastered all decryption keys. Therefore, the creative design strategy for programing multifunctional gels opens up the possibility for hierarchical and multi-dimensional information encryption and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract
The unique properties of self-healing materials hold great potential in many fields because they can repair themselves automatically and have an improved service time. In this study, polyacrylamide (PAAm) gels with complementary guanine and cytosine base pairs have been prepared. Herein, based on our previous research, cytosine (C) and guanine (G) (triple hydrogen) with biosafety were introduced to endow the PAAm with self-healing properties. Then, their self-healing properties were studied in detail and the results indicate that the optimized PAAm gel sample manifests a healing efficiency of 90% at room temperature. The excellent proportion of methacryloyloxyethyl isocyanate-cytosine/guanine (IEM-C/G) to AAm is 1 : 30, according to which the PAM-CG material exhibits enhanced stretchability and tensile strength. The major healing process occurs within 5 h at room temperature, and the material is completely healed after 20 h. Moreover, the healing time can be shortened at a higher temperature. The mechanical behaviors are tuned by changing the base pairs, and the gels exhibit recoverable mechanical performances. Therefore, this study provides a facile strategy for developing self-healing and biocompatible PAAm gels.

Abstract
Shape-morphing hydrogels have drawn great attention due to their wide applications as soft actuators, while asymmetric responsive shape-morphing behavior upon encountering external stimuli is fundamental for the development of hydrogel actuators. Therefore, in this work, bilayer hydrogels were prepared and the shrinkage ratios (LA/LN) of the AAm/AAc layer to the NIPAM layer immersed in different metal ion solutions, leading to bending in different directions, were investigated. The difference in the shrinkage ratio was attributed to the synergistic effect of the osmolarity difference between the inside and outside of the hydrogels and the interaction difference between the ion and hydrogel polymer chains. Additionally, under thermal stimuli, the hydrogel actuator would bend toward the NIPAM layer due to the shrinkage of the hydrogel networks caused by the hydrophilic–hydrophobic phase transition of NIPAM blocks above the LCST. This indicates that metal ion and thermal-responsive shape-morphing hydrogel actuators with good mechanical properties could be used as metal ion or temperature-controllable switches or other smart devices.

Abstract
Fluorescent hydrogels have attracted tremendous attention recently in the field of information security due to the booming development of information technology. Along this line, it is highly desired to improve the security level of concealed information by the advancements of materials and encryption technologies. Here we report multi-level encryption of information in a bilayer hydrogel with shape-morphing ability and patterned fluorescence. This hydrogel is composed of a fluorescence layer containing chromophore units in the poly(acrylic acid) network and an active layer with UV-absorption agents in the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) network. The former layer exhibits tunable fluorescence tailored by UV light irradiation to induce unimer-to-dimer transformation of the chromophores, facilitating the write-in of information through photolithography. The latter layer is responsive to temperature, enabling morphing of the bilayer hydrogel. Therefore, the bilayer hydrogel encoded with patterned fluorescent patterns can deform into three-dimensional configurations at room temperature to conceal the information, which is readable only after successive procedures of shape recovery at an appropriate temperature and under UV light irradiation from the right direction. The combination of morphing materials and patterned fluorescence as a new avenue to improve the encryption level of information should merit the design of other smart materials with integrated functions for specific applications.

Abstract
Amine-functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold great potential in diversified applications. However, the synthesis is dominated by postsynthetic modification, while the de novo synthesis allowing for direct installation of amine groups remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we develop a site-selective synthetic strategy for the facile preparation of amine-functionalized hydrazone-linked COF for the first time. A new monomer 2-aminoterephthalohydrazide (NH2-Th) bearing both amine and hydrazide functionalities is designed to react with benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (Bta). Remarkably, the different activity of amine and hydrazide groups toward aldehyde underpin the highly site-selective synthesis of an unprecedented NH2-Th-Bta COF with abundant free amine groups anchored in the well-defined pore channels. Interestingly, NH2-Th-Bta COF exhibits dramatically enhanced iodine uptake capacity (3.58 g g-1) in comparison to that of the nonfunctionalized Th-Bta COF counterpart (0.68 g g-1), and many reported porous adsorbents, despite its low specific surface area. Moreover, NH2-Th-Bta COF possesses exceptional cycling capability and retained high iodine uptake, even after six cycles. This work not only provides a simple and straightforward route for the de novo synthesis of amine-functionalized COFs but also uncovers the great potential of amine-functionalized COFs as adsorbents in the efficient removal of radioiodine and beyond.

Abstract
Soft hydrogel materials can be applied for use in biosensors, wearable electronics, artificial skin, soft robots, and so on. Practical applications require the materials to have various properties such as high conductivity, toughness, self-healing, stretchability, and so on. However, achieving all these features in a single material remains challenging at present. Herein, the fabrication of novel composite carboxymethylcellulose/poly(acrylic acid)/polypyrrole/Al(III) (CMC/PAA/PPy/Al(III)) multifunctional hydrogels using a simple method is described. The mechanical and electrical self-healing properties are attained by multiple dynamic coordinations between Al3+ ions and carboxyl groups from CMC and PAA together with the hydrogen bonding between PPy and the -OH of CMC and/or the -COOH of PAA. The electrical conductivity is achieved by the conductive polymer PPy, free ions, and the synergistic effect between the PPy particles and the free ions. Moreover, desirable mechanical properties, such as stretchability (1344%), toughness, and mouldability are realized by establishing a balance between the chemical and physical crosslinking networks, and the nanostructure of PPy. Thus, the resultant hydrogels have potential applications in electronic skin, biomedical implants, and wearable electronic devices in the future.

Abstract
Shape-memory and self-healing polymers have been a hotspot of research in the field of smart polymers in the past decade. Under external stimulation, shape-memory and self-healing polymers can complete programed shape transformation, and they can spontaneously repair damage, thereby extending the life of the materials. In this review, we focus on the progress in polymers with shape-memory and self-healing properties in the past decade. The physical or chemical changes in the materials during the occurrence of shape memory as well as self-healing were analyzed based on the polymer molecular structure. We classified the polymers and discussed the preparation methods for shape-memory and self-healing polymers based on the dynamic interactions which can make the polymers exhibit self-healing properties including dynamic covalent bonds (DA reaction, disulfide exchange reaction, imine exchange reaction, alkoxyamine exchange reaction, and boronic acid ester exchange reaction) and dynamic noncovalent interactions (crystallization, hydrogen bonding, ionic interaction, metal coordination interaction, host-guest interactions, and hydrophobic interactions) and their corresponding triggering conditions. In addition, we discussed the advantages and the mechanism that the shape-memory property promotes self-healing in polymers, as well as the future trends in shape-memory and self-healing polymers.

Abstract
Materials capable of shape-morphing and/or fluorescence imaging have practical significances in the fields of anti-counterfeiting, information display, and information protection. However, it's challenging to realize these functions in hydrogels due to the poor mechanical properties and lack of tunable fluorescence. A tough hydrogel with good shape-memory ability and phototunable fluorescence is reported here, which affords reprogrammable shape designing and information encoding for dual-encryption. This hydrogel is prepared by incorporating donor-acceptor chromophore units into a poly(1-vinylimidazole-co-methacrylic acid) network, in which the dense intra- and interchain hydrogen bonds lead to desirable features including high stiffness, high toughness, and temperature-mediated shape-memory property. Additionally, the hydrogel shows photomediated tunable fluorescence through a unimer-to-dimer transformation of the chromophores. By combining photolithography and origami/kirigami designs, hydrogel sheets encoded with fluorescent patterns can deform into specific 3D configurations. The geometrically encrypted fluorescent information in the architected hydrogels is readable only after sequential shape recovery and UV light irradiation. As demonstrated by proof-of-concept experiments, both the fluorescent pattern and the 3D configuration are reprogrammable, facilitating repeated information protection and display. The design of tough hydrogels with rewritable fluorescent patterns and reconfigurable shapes should guide the future development of smart materials with improved security and wider applications in aqueous environments.

Abstract
Supramolecular hydrogels are attracting soft materials with potential applications. In this study, we synthesized a facile gelator (named 2-QF) based on phenylalanine derivative with a Quinoline group. 2-QF can assemble to form hydrogels at room temperature in different colors under low pH values. Moreover, 2-QF was triggered to form a yellow metallohydrogel (2-QF-Zn) at high pH by the coordination between 2-QF and Zn2+. 2-QF-Zn metallohydrogel showed excellent multi-stimuli responsiveness, especially the reversible "on-off" luminescence switching, as induced by base/acid. In addition, at a low concentration, 2-QF can selectively and visibly identify Zn2+ through fluorescence enhancement, and can detect Zn2+ at physiological pH as a chemosensor. Remarkably, 2-QF and 2-QF-Zn exhibited an excellent biocompatibility without cell cytotoxicity, and 2-QF is able to penetrate live HeLa cells and image intracellular Zn2+ by a turn-on fluorescent response, which makes it a potential candidate for biomedical applications.

Abstract
Hydrogels, as a kind of soft materials, are good candidates for smart skin-like materials. A double network is usually fabricated to improve the mechanical properties of hydrogels, and involves two different kinds of networks. In this work, a novel strategy for preparing single network double cross-linker (SNDCL) hydrogels was proposed and the prepared hydrogels exhibited excellent mechanical properties, including stretchability, compressibility, self-recovery, adhesion, shape memory and mechanical strength. N,N'-Methylenebisacrylamide forms covalent bonds with the network, while citric acid can form multiple weak interactions due to the polycarboxylic structure. This improves the tensile properties (6564%) and compressive properties of the hydrogel, and the hydrogels also exhibit long-lasting self-adhesion ability on various substrates. In addition, the hydrogels with multiple properties can be used as flexible strain sensors, allowing the monitoring of body movements. The hydrogels can hopefully be used in wearable electronic sensor devices and for healthcare monitoring.

Abstract
In this work, we reported a multi-responsive luminescent hydrogel with properties of encryption, naked eye sensing of glucose, shape memory, self-healing, and antibacterial activity. The hydrogel (GA/CCS/DNSA/Eu3+) was obtained by mixing phenylboronic acid-modified gelatin (GA-DBA), catechol-modified carboxymethyl chitosan (CCS-PCA), 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNSA), and Eu3+ ions through a facile heating-cooling process. The resultant hydrogel exhibits reversible luminescence and color and phase changes in response to temperature, acid/base, salt, and redox stimuli. Based on the multiple responsiveness, information encryption and decryption, naked eye sensing of glucose, remarkable shape memory, and enhanced mechanical properties of the as-prepared hydrogel were realized. In addition, the self-healing capacity was also achieved due to the dynamic bonds in GA/CCS/DNSA/Eu3+ hydrogels. Specifically, the GA/CCS/DNSA/Eu3+ hydrogels possess antibacterial activity owing to the bacteriostasis of the CCS-PCA and DNSA/Eu3+ complex. Thus, GA/CCS/DNSA/Eu3+ hydrogels have potential applications in the fields of anticounterfeiting, wearable devices, biomedicine, sensing, etc.

Abstract
Smart materials with multiple shape memory capacities have gradually attracted the interest of a lot of researchers due to their potential application in textiles, smart actuators, and aerospace engineering. However, the design and sustainable synthesis of multiple shape memory polymers (SMPs) simultaneously possessing robust mechanical strength, reprocessability, and reconfigurability still remain full of challenges. Starting from a readily available biomass material cellulose, a well-defined SMP, cellulose-graft-poly(n-butyl acrylate-co-1-vinylimidazole) copolymer (Cell-g-(BA-co-VI)) was facilely synthesized by addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) and the subsequent metallosupramolecular cross-linking. Taking advantage of the dynamic bonding, i.e., the rapid reversible fragmentation and the formation of metal ion-imidazole coordination, polymer networks with highly tunable mechanical properties, excellent solid-state plasticity, and quadruple-shape memory capacity are handily attainable. Microscopically, the metal-ligand clusters have a strong tendency to phase segregate from the soft grafted copolymers indicated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and these serve as netpoints to construct novel SMPs. This article represents our new exploration of the next-generation SMPs based on cellulose backbone where carrying with supramolecular cross-linked soft grafted copolymers. This architecture design allows achieving robust, reprocessable, and reconfigurable thermoplastic SMPs that are difficult to realize by many other methods. Integrating these properties into one system in a synergetic manner also provides a novel approach to the high value addition application of cellulose in the fabrication of advanced functional materials.
