High-Efficiency Metalenses with Switchable Functionalities in Microwave Region

Multi-spectral compatible metasurface with low infrared emissivity, independent microwave complex-amplitude control, and high visible transparency

With the rapid development of communication technology and detection technology, it is difficult for devices operating in a single spectrum to meet the application requirements of device integration and miniaturization, resulting in the exploration of multi-spectrum compatible devices. However, the functional design of different spectra is often contradictory and difficult to be compatible. In this work, a transparent slit circular metasurface with a high filling ratio is proposed to achieve the compatibility of microwave, infrared and visible light. In the microwave, based on the Pancharatnam-Berry phase theory, the continuous amplitude and binary phase can be customized only by rotating the slit angle to achieve an Airy beam function at 8-12 GHz. In the infrared, the mean infrared emissivity is reduced to 0.3 at 3-14 µm by maintaining high conductive filling ratio, and in visible light, based on the transparency of materials, the mean transmittance can achieve 50% at 400-800 nm. All the results can verify the multi-spectral compatibility performance, which can also verify the validity of our design method. Importantly, the multi-spectral compatible metasurface contributes an option for multifunctional integration, which can be further applied in communication, camouflage, and other fields.

Dual-functional metalenses for the polarization-controlled generation of focalized vector beams in the telecom infrared

The availability of static tiny optical devices is mandatory to reduce the complexity of optical paths that typically use dynamic optical components and/or many standard elements for the generation of complex states of light, leading to unprecedented levels of miniaturization and compactness of optical systems. In particular, the design of flat and integrated optical elements capable of multiple vector beams generation with high resolution in the visible and infrared range is very attractive in many fields, from life science to information and communication technology. In this regard, we propose dual-functional transmission dielectric metalenses that act simultaneously on the dynamic and geometric phases in order to manipulate independently right-handed and left-handed circularly polarized states of light and generate focused vector beams in a compact and versatile way. In the specific, starting from the mathematical fundamentals for the compact generation of vector beams using dual-functional optical elements, we provide the numerical algorithms for the computation of metaoptics and apply those techniques to the design and fabrication of silicon metalenses which are able to generate and focus different vector beams in the telecom infrared, depending on the linear polarization state in input. This approach provides new integrated optics for applications in the fields of high-resolution microscopy, optical manipulation, and optical communications, both in the classical and single-photon regimes.

Bifunctional Manipulation of Terahertz Waves with High-Efficiency Transmissive Dielectric Metasurfaces

Multifunctional terahertz (THz) devices in transmission mode are highly desired in integration-optics applications, but conventional devices are bulky in size and inefficient. While ultra-thin multifunctional THz devices are recently demonstrated based on reflective metasurfaces, their transmissive counterparts suffer from severe limitations in efficiency and functionality. Here, based on high aspect-ratio silicon micropillars exhibiting wide transmission-phase tuning ranges with high transmission-amplitudes, a set of dielectric metasurfaces is designed and fabricated to achieve efficient spin-multiplexed wavefront controls on THz waves. As a benchmark test, the photonic-spin-Hall-effect is experimentally demonstrated with a record high absolute efficiency of 92% using a dielectric metasurface encoded with geometric phases only. Next, spin-multiplexed controls on circularly polarized THz beams (e.g., anomalous refraction and focusing) are experimentally demonstrated with experimental efficiency reaching 88%, based on a dielectric meta-device encoded with both spin-independent resonant phases and spin-dependent geometric phases. Finally, high-efficiency spin-multiplexed dual holographic images are experimentally realized with the third meta-device encoded with both resonant and geometric phases. Both near-field and far-field measurements are performed to characterize these devices, yielding results in agreement with full-wave simulations. The study paves the way to realize multifunctional, high-performance, and ultra-compact THz devices for applications in biology sensing, communications, and so on.

Single-Layer Achiral Metasurface with Independent Amplitude-Phase Control for Both Left-Handed and Right-Handed Circular Polarizations

Amplitude-phase control for circular polarized (CP) waves is experiencing a research upsurge in electromagnetics owing to the kaleidoscopic electromagnetic responses and promising application prospects of circular polarizations, and chiral metasurfaces are more facile to achieve a series of intriguing chiral phenomena than natural materials. However, it is difficult for most existing chiral metasurfaces to independently tailor the amplitude and phase of left-handed circular polarized and right-handed circular polarized waves at the same frequency as they suffer the drawbacks of large thickness, multiple layers, and complex structure. Herein, an innovative strategy of single-layer achiral metasurfaces of thickness 0.13λ0 is proposed to independently and simultaneously manipulate the amplitude and phase of orthogonal CP waves. As a proof of concept, an amplitude and phase controlled dual-channel meta-hologram is designed to reconstruct diverse images with high fidelity under orthogonal CP illumination, and the simulated and experimental results collectively validate the availability of our methodology. Significantly, the meta-hologram is also applicable to full polarization states according to the decomposition of electromagnetic waves. The inspiring design of single-layer achiral metasurfaces provides a simple and effective approach to explore chiral effects, and they possess enormous application potential in multitudinous microwave devices.

Graphene-Based Optically Transparent Metasurface Capable of Dual-Polarized Modulation for Electromagnetic Stealth

Microwave stealth technology with optical transparency is of great significance for solar-powered aircrafts (e.g., satellites or unmanned aerial vehicles) in increasingly complex electromagnetic environments. By coating them with optically transparent absorbing materials or devices, these large-sized solar panels could avoid detection by radar while maintaining highly efficient collection of solar energy. However, conventional microwave-absorbing materials/devices for solar panels suffer from bulky volume and fixed stealth performance that significantly hinders their practicality or multifunctionality. Particularly, dynamic modulation of microwave absorption for dual polarization remains a challenge. In this paper, we propose the design, fabrication, and characterization of an optically transparent and dynamically tunable microwave-absorbing metasurface that enables dual modulations (amplitude and frequency) independently for two orthogonal linearly polarized excitations. The tunability of the proposed metasurface is guaranteed by an elaborately designed anisotropic meta-atom composed of a patterned graphene structure whose electromagnetic responses for different polarizations can be dynamically and independently controlled via bias voltages. The dual tunability in such a graphene-based absorbing metasurface is experimentally measured, which agrees well with those numerical results. We further build an equivalent lumped circuit model to analyze the physical relation between the tunable sheet resistance of graphene and the polarization-independent modulations of the metasurface. Taking into account the advantages of optical transparency and flexibility, the proposed microwave-absorbing metasurface significantly enhances the multitasking stealth performance in complex scenarios and has the potential for advanced solar energy devices.

Simultaneous and independent regulation of circularly polarized terahertz wave based on metasurface

A single metasurface-based device possessing multiple functionalities is highly desirable for terahertz technology system. In this paper, we design a reflective metasurface to generate switchable vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), focusing beams, focusing beams with arbitrary positions, and vortex beams with arbitrary topological charges in the terahertz region. By combining the spin decoupling principle and the phase addition theorem, the superposition states of OAM and focusing beams with arbitrary positions can be independent manipulated under right-handed and left-handed circularly polarized (LCP/RCP) waves illumination. Such a diversified functionalities device provides a promising application in the field of terahertz communication and terahertz super-resolution imaging.

Perfect Control of Diffraction Patterns with Phase-Gradient Metasurfaces

Phase-gradient metasurfaces (PGMs) constitute an efficient platform for deflection of a beam in a desired direction. According to the generalized Snell's law, the direction of the reflected/refracted wave can be tuned by the spatial phase function provided by the PGMs. However, most studies on PGM focus only on a single diffraction order, that is, the incident wave can be reflected or refracted to a single target direction. Even in the case of multiple beams pointing in different directions, the beams are still in the same order mode, and the energy carried by different beams cannot be controlled. In addition, the energy ratio of multiple beams is generally uncontrollable. Here, we propose a general method to perfectly control diffraction patterns based on a multi-beam PGM. An analytical solution for arbitrarily controlling diffraction beams is derived through which the generation and energy distribution in high-order diffraction beams can be achieved. Three metasurfaces with different diffraction orders and energy ratios are designed and fabricated to demonstrate the proposed method. The efficiencies of diffraction for the desired channels are close to 100%. The simulated and measured far-field patterns are in good agreement with theoretical predictions, validating the proposed method that provides a new way to design multi-beam antennas and that has significance in wireless communication applications.

Generating diverse functionalities simultaneously and independently for arbitrary linear polarized illumination enabled by a chiral transmission-reflection-selective bifunctional metasurface

A multifunctional metasurface is capable of manipulating electromagnetic waves and achieving kaleidoscopic functions flexibly, which significantly improves the integration and utilization of a single metasurface and has become one of the hotspots in electromagnetics. However, the majority of designs to date can only operate for limited polarization states in half-space and are difficult to show diverse functions at the same time, which restrict the widespread applications of multifunctional metadevices. Herein, an inspiring strategy of a chiral transmission-reflection-selective bifunctional metasurface is proposed to generate two independent functions in co-polarized reflection channel for left-handed circular polarized (LCP) incidence utilizing rotation-induced geometric phase modulation and in co-polarized transmission channel for right-handed circular polarized (RCP) incidence utilizing scaling-induced propagation phase modulation, and both functions appear concurrently under arbitrary linear polarized (LP) incident waves. To verify the feasibility of this methodology, three proof-of-concept metadevices composed of a dual-mode orbital angular momentum (OAM) generator, a bifocal metalens and an integrated metadevice of OAM generator and metalens are constructed and their performances in simulations and experiments are in good accordance with the theoretical ones. This exotic design of bifunctional metasurface will open up a promising way for multifunctional metadevices in engineering applications.

Additively Manufactured Multi-Material Ultrathin Metasurfaces for Broadband Circular Polarization Decoupled Beams and Orbital Angular Momentum Generation

Controlling the wavefront and manipulating the polarization of the electromagnetic wave using an ultrathin flat device are highly desirable in many emerging fields. To shape the wavefront between two decoupled orthogonal circular polarization states, that is, the right-hand circular polarization (RCP) and the left-hand circular polarization (LCP), most state-of-the-art metasurfaces (MSs) combine the propagation phase and Pancharatnam-Berry phase into meta-atoms. This article proposes a different strategy to fully decouple the LCP and RCP and control their wavefronts independently. By taking advantage of the conductive and dielectric multi-material-integrated additive manufacturing technique, the proposed transmissive MS has an ultrathin thickness (0.11 free-space wavelength) and controls the LCP and RCP wavefronts independently under linearly polarized incidence illumination. The proposed meta-atom consists of a receiving antenna on the top, a transmitting antenna at the bottom with a strip-line connecting them. The strip-line introduces the same phase shifts for both RCP and LCP waves, while the transmitting antenna with in-plane rotation leads to the opposite phase shifts for RCP and LCP waves. Therefore, the phase delays from the strip-line and the angular rotation of the transmitting antenna provide two degrees of freedom, enabling independent beam shaping of LCP and RCP waves. Two MSs with different functionalities are printed for proof-of-concept, and the performances are experimentally verified.

High-purity orbital angular momentum vortex beam generator using an amplitude-and-phase metasurface

In this Letter, we propose an approach to generate high-purity orbital angular momentum (OAM) vortex waves using an amplitude-and-phase metasurface (APM). By varying the square split ring opening and orientation angles, the cross-polarized reflection response of the proposed structure can yield full phase and amplitude coverage. Based on the traditional phase-only metasurface (POM), the Chebyshev synthesis method (CSM) is applied to array the metasurface amplitude distribution. Metasurfaces with modes l of 1, 2, 3, and 4 are designed. Compared with the POM, the APM can effectively improve the vortex beam quality and OAM mode purity. The measured results agree well with full-wave simulations. The presented method provides a new, to the best of our knowledge, way to design high-purity OAM generators based on metasurfaces.

Broadband surface wave coupler with low infrared emission and microwave reflection

Metasurfaces possess excellent capabilities to flexibly manipulate electromagnetic waves in multiple frequency domains, which show great potential application in multispectral stealth. Herein, a broadband surface waves coupler based on the design of thin Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase gradient metasurfaces (PGMs) of thickness 0.12λ₀ is proposed to reduce infrared emission and microwave reflection simultaneously. Low infrared emission results from the high filling ratio of the indium-tin-oxide (ITO) on the surface, and low microwave reflection results from the conversion from propagating waves to surface waves. Intriguingly, this design is also capable of acting as a simple circular polarized (CP) discriminator because orthogonal CP waves are coupled into surface waves propagating along opposite directions. A proof-of-concept prototype is simulated and measured to validate the effectiveness of our methodology. The results indicate that the broadband surface waves coupler shows low infrared emissivity less than 0.28 from 3 to 14 µm and has microwave reflection reduction larger than 10 dB in 7.3-9.5 GHz. The exceptional performances of the proposed broadband surface waves coupler make us believe that our design offers an alternative strategy for multispectral stealth and multifunctional application.

Simultaneous reduction of microwave reflection and infrared emission enabled by a phase gradient metasurface

Metasurfaces have shown promising applications in radar-infrared compatible stealth because of its superior electromagnetic wave control capabilities, but, to date, the majority of designs still suffer from the defects of large thickness, limited working bandwidth, relatively high infrared emissivity and so on. Here, an exotic phase gradient metasurface (PGM) is proposed to achieve low microwave reflection and low infrared emission concurrently, which has a small thickness of about 0.10λ₀. The microwave reflection reduction larger than 10 dB in 14-20 GHz is attributed to the anomalous reflection for arbitrary LP incident waves, and the infrared emissivity less than 0.28 from 3 to 14 µm is due to the indium-tin-oxide (ITO) with low infrared emissivity and high filling ratio. Also, the designed PGM can also realize beam deflection for orthogonal CP waves because of the meta-atoms' isotropic characteristics. Our methodology is fully verified by numerous simulations and experiments and may open a new avenue for radar-infrared compatible stealth research.

Polarization induced reconfigurable multiple OAM vortex waves through a composite meta-surface beam former

We demonstrate a composite meta-surface beam former to generate reconfigurable multiple orbital angular momentum (OAM) vortex waves by integrating a polarization conversion meta-mirror with a multi-functional anisotropic meta-lens. More specifically, electromagnetic fields from the feed would be firstly reflected by the meta-mirror, and then transmit through the meta-lens to form the well converged OAM vortex waves with tailored beam numbers, radiation directions and topological charges. Especially, we show that the anisotropic characteristics of the meta-lens would create different multiple OAM vortex waves when the meta-mirror is rotated or equipped with active circuits to have different polarized illuminations on the meta-lens. Our design should pave the way for the reconfigurable design of generating multiple OAM vortex waves to further expand the communication capacity.

3D Printed Sub-Terahertz All-Dielectric Lens for Arbitrary Manipulation of Quasi-Nondiffractive Orbital Angular Momentum Waves

Terahertz (THz) vortex waves carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) hold great potential in dealing with the capacity crunch in wireless high-speed communication systems. Nevertheless, it is quite a challenge for the widespread applications of OAM in the THz regime due to the beam divergence and stringent alignment requirement. To address this issue, an all-dielectric lens (ADL) is proposed for the arbitrary manipulation of quasi-nondiffractive THz OAM waves (QTOWs). On the basis of the concept of the optical conical lens and the multivorticity metasurface, the beam number, the topological charge (TC), and the deflection angle as well as the nondiffractive depth of the generated THz OAM waves are controllable. For proof-of-concept, two ADLs are 3D printed to create single and dual deflected QTOWs, respectively. Remarkably, measured by a THz imaging camera, the desired QTOWs with high mode purity are observed in predesigned directions with a nondiffractive depth predefined theoretically. The proposed designs and experiments, for the first time, verified that the QTOWs could be achieved with a nondiffractive range of 55.58λ_g (λ_g = wavelength at 140 GHz) and large deflection angles of 30° and 45°.

Dynamic switching of coaxial focus based on terahertz meta-lens

We propose an active meta-lens that can dynamically switch the coaxial focus on three statuses with the external optical pump. The meta-lens composes of two concentric sets of complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR) arrays, which function at different focal lengths, atop the silicon on sapphire substrate. With specifically structured phase distribution, the meta-lens can form completely separated double foci simultaneously. Through illuminating the internal or external CSRR arrays individually with patterned optical pump, the meta-lens switches to single focus at different points. The proposed design provides a new avenue for developing terahertz multifunctional devices applied in microscope imaging and tomography.

Multifunctional ultrathin reflective metasurface via polarization-decoupled phase for arbitrary circularly or elliptically polarized waves

Metasurface offers a promising platform in the design of multifunctional devices owing to its unique ability for EMWs manipulation. However, wave-manipulation capabilities for metasurfaces face challenges in manipulating orthogonal EMWs with arbitrary circularly or elliptically polarized EMWs in the microwave region. Herein, single-layer reflective metasurfaces are proposed for independent manipulation of an arbitrary set of orthogonal circularly or elliptically polarized EMWs via polarization-decoupled phase. Taking advantage of single-layer anisotropic meta-atoms, the proposed metasurface can act as a tandem phase modulator, which introduces polarization-decoupled phase profiles for arbitrary circularly and elliptically polarized EMWs based on the Jones matrix. In this way, the proposed metasurface can distinguish a set of orthogonal EMWs with circular or elliptical polarization states and impose arbitrary phase profiles on them independently and simultaneously. For proof-of-concept, bifunctional metasurfaces operating in the microwave region are presented for independent manipulation of three different sets of orthogonal circularly or elliptically polarized EMWs. They create dual independent channels associated with a pair of orthogonal polarization states, performing functions including polarization beam splitting and orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing. Measured and simulated results show a good agreement, confirming that the proposed single-layer reflective metasurfaces are efficient devices that enable meta-devices to independently control arbitrary circular and elliptical polarized EMWs, achieving arbitrary functionalities.

Coupling Plasmonic System for Efficient Wavefront Control

Efficient and flexible manipulation of electromagnetic waves using metasurfaces has attracted continuous attention in recent years. However, previous studies mainly apply sole resonance effect to accomplish the task. Here, we show that introducing a meta-coupling effect would reveal further physical insights in the electromagnetic wave control. To demonstrate this, a reflection-type coupling system composed by two identical linear resonances in a metal-insulator-metal configuration is theoretically proposed using the coupled-mode theory, whose phase diagram can be well controlled upon the coupling changes. Such intriguing optical property is verified by a double C-shaped resonator in the terahertz regime, where the coupling effect can be tuned by changing their either relative distance or rotation. More importantly, the reflection phase shift around the working frequency can be efficiently engineered without having to change the dimensions of the resonators. Two efficient anomalous metasurface deflectors are designed and experimentally characterized, whose maximum measured efficiency is more than 70%. The proposed controlling strategy further enriches the designing freedoms of metasurfaces and may find broad applications in realizing efficient and tunable functional devices.

Simple design of efficient broadband multifunctional polarization converter for X-band applications

A simple design of a broadband multifunctional polarization converter using an anisotropic metasurface for X-band application is proposed. The proposed polarization converter consists of a periodic array of the two-corner-cut square patch resonators based on the FR-4 substrate that achieves both cross-polarization and linear-to-circular polarization conversions. The simulated results show that the polarization converter displays the linear cross-polarization conversion in the frequency range from 8 to 12 GHz with the polarization conversion efficiency above 90%. The efficiency is kept higher than 80% with wide incident angle up to 45°. Moreover, the proposed design achieves the linear-to-circular polarization conversion at two frequency bands of 7.42–7.6 GHz and 13–13.56 GHz. A prototype of the proposed polarization converter is fabricated and measured, showing a good agreement between the measured and simulated results. The proposed polarization converter exhibits excellent performances such as simple structure, multifunctional property, and large cost-efficient bandwidth and wide incident angle insensitivity in the linear cross polarization conversion, which can be useful for X-band applications. Furthermore, this structure can be extended to design broadband polarization converters in other frequency bands.

Tunable broadband polarization converters based on coded graphene metasurfaces

In this paper, two optimization algorithms (randomly initialized hill climbing and genetic algorithms) are considered to design broadband polarization converters based on coded metasurfaces. A pixeled graphene patch with an elliptic structure is proposed for the initial solution. Each pixel can be 1 and 0 which represents the presence and absence of the graphene. The initial guess tends to the optimum configuration after several optimization processes. Four broadband polarization converters are designed utilizing the optimization algorithms. By changing the chemical potential of graphene, the operation frequency of the polarization converters can be adjusted. Furthermore, the effects of relaxation time of graphene and incident angle on the polarization conversion bandwidth of the four designed structures are investigated.

Robust tunable plasmon induced transparency in coupled-resonance finite array of metasurface nanostructure

Robust and dynamically polarization-controlled tunable plasmon induced transparency (PIT) resonance in designed finite-array nanostructures metasurface is demonstrated, where sharp resonance is guaranteed by design and protected against large geometrical imperfections even for micro-zone sub-array. By employing the explicit analysis of near-field characteristic in the reciprocal-space based on the momentum matching, and the far-field radiation features with point-scattering approach in real-space sparked from Huygens’s principles, the physics of interference resonance for plane-wave optical transmission and reflection of the metasurface is theoretically and thoroughly investigated. The distinctive polarization-selective and Q-tunable PIT shows robust features to performance degradations in traditional PIT system caused by inadvertent fabrication flaws or geometry asymmetry-variations, which paves way for the development of reconfigurable and flexible metasurface and, additionally, opens new avenues in robust and multifunctional controllable nanophotonics device design and applications.

An ultra-thin double-functional metasurface patch antenna for UHF RFID applications

An ultra-thin double-functional metasurface patch antenna (MPA) was proposed, where it can operate not only in the antenna mode but also can simultaneously act as perfect absorber for normal incident waves, suitable for RFID applications in the 868 MHz band. The MPA structure consists of a typical coaxially-fed patch antenna merged, for the first time, with a metasurface absorber acting as artificial ground. A methodology for the unit-cell design of the metasurface is proposed followed by an equivalent circuit model analysis, which makes it possible to transform a low-loss ([Formula: see text]) unit-cell with highly-reflective characteristics to a perfect absorber for normal incident waves. It is based on modifying the critical external coupling by properly introducing slits on the unit-cell, allowing to design an ultra-thin ([Formula: see text] at 868 MHz) and a very compact structure in comparison to previously developed designs. For validation purposes, the MPA was fabricated and its performances in both functional modes were characterized numerically and experimentally. It is demonstrated that merging the absorber with the patch not only allows obtaining a well-matched ([Formula: see text] dB) antenna with an enhanced gain (by 175.6% compared to a typical patch) at the desired frequency but also leads to an overall thickness of only 2.5 mm ([Formula: see text] at 868 MHz). With an absorber size limited to the MPA dimensions, a reasonable 1.3 dB reduction in powers reflected by the MPA was achieved compared to a similar size metallic sheet. Whilst having the lowest profile among the so far reported RFID readers, the proposed MPA can be conveniently fitted for example within the required volume of smart shelf RFID readers or used in portable RFID readers while being capable of mitigating multipath reflection issues and incorrect reading of RFID.

High numerical aperture microwave metalens

The numerical aperture (NA) of a lens determines its focusing resolution capability and the maximum light collection or emission angle. In this Letter, an ultrathin high NA metalens operating in the microwave band is designed and demonstrated both numerically and experimentally. The proposed element is constructed by a multi-layer complementary split ring resonator, which can cover full 2π phase shift simultaneously with high transmission magnitude by varying its radius gradually. The numerical and experimental results reveal that the designed ultrathin (thickness is only ∼0.23λ) metalens can focus normal incident microwave efficiently to a spot of full width at half-maximum (FWHM) as small as ∼0.54λ with a corresponding high NA exceeding 0.9. Besides, the high NA metalens also possesses a relatively large focusing efficiency with a peak 48% within considered broad frequency range from 7.5 to 10 GHz. The performances of the presented metalens can be comparable or even superior to nowadays high-quality optical metalenses and represent an important step to develop a high-performance metalens in low spectrum. Besides, it can greatly facilitate the development of some novel miniaturized devices like a high-gain low profile scanning antenna, an ultra-compact retroreflector, and cloaks.

Power balance and efficiency of metasurface antennas

This paper presents two methods for the efficient evaluation of the power balance in circular metasurface (MTS) antennas implementing arbitrary modulated surface impedances on a grounded dielectric slab. Both methods assume the surface current in the homogenized MTS to be known. The first technique relies on the surface current expansion with Fourier-Bessel basis functions (FBBF) and proceeds by integration of the Poynting vector on a closed surface. The second method is based on the evaluation of the residue of the electric field spectrum at the surface-wave (SW) pole, and is demonstrated by using a current expansion in Gaussian ring basis functions (GRBF). The surface current expansions can be directly obtained either by analyzing the antenna with a Method of Moments (MoM) tool for homogenized MTSs based on FBBF or GRBF, or derived by a projection process. From there, the power contributions, namely the total power delivered by the feed, the radiated power, the SW power, and the Ohmic power losses in the dielectric are computed. Several efficiency metrics are presented and discussed: tapering efficiency, conversion efficiency, loss factor, and diffraction factor. Since the MTS apertures at hand are leaky-wave (LW) antennas, the designer must find a compromise between the aperture efficiency and the conversion efficiency. This requires accurate and fast computational techniques for the efficiency. The present paper demonstrates for the first time that the efficiency of MTS antenna devices can be accurately evaluated in a few minutes. The compromise that should be made during the design process between the tapering efficiency and the conversion efficiency is highlighted. The impact on the efficiency of isotropic versus anisotropic MTS, uniform versus non-uniform modulation index, is analyzed. An excellent agreement is obtained between both approaches, commercial software, and experimental data.

Metasurfaces for efficient digital noise absorption

We numerically demonstrate two types of metasurface absorbers to efficiently absorb digital signals. First, we show that the digital waveforms used in this study contain not only a fundamental wave but also nonnegligible harmonic waves, which limits the absorption performance of a conventional metasurface absorber operating in only a single, finite frequency band. The first type of the proposed absorbers is designed using two kinds of unit cells, each of which absorbs either a fundamental frequency or third harmonic of an incident digital waveform. This dual-band metasurface absorber exhibits absorption performance exceeding that of the conventional metasurface absorber and more strongly dissipates the energy of a digital waveform. In addition, the second type of absorber exploits the concept of nonlinear analogous circuits to convert an incoming wave to a different waveform, specifically, a triangular waveform that has a larger magnitude at a fundamental frequency. Therefore, the incoming waveform is more effectively absorbed by this waveform-conversion metasurface absorber as well. Although still there remain some issues to put these digital signal absorbers into practice, including experimental validation, our results contribute to mitigating electromagnetic interference issues caused by digital noise and realising physically smaller, lighter digital signal processing products for the next generation.

Electromagnetic surface waves supported by a resistive metasurface-covered metamaterial structure

This study examines the analytical and numerical solution of electromagnetic surface waves supported by a resistive metasurface-covered grounded metamaterial structure. To simulate the metamaterial, the Kramers-Kronig relation based on the causality principle is used, while the modeling of the resistive metasurface has been done by implementing the impedance boundary conditions. The analytical expressions for the field phasors of surface waves are developed for the transverse magnetic (TM) polarized mode and transverse electric (TE) polarized mode. The characteristic equations are computed for both modes, and the unknown propagation constant is evaluated numerically in the kernel. After computation, the dispersion curves, electric field profiles, effective mode index ([Formula: see text]), and phase speeds ([Formula: see text]) are presented for both the TM and TE polarized modes. To study the tunability of surface waves, the influence of the thickness of the metamaterial slab ([Formula: see text]), effective permittivity of the metamaterial ([Formula: see text]), thickness of the resistive metasurface ([Formula: see text]), and effective permittivity of the metasurface ([Formula: see text]) on all the numerical results has been studied. However, the geometrical parameters are found to be more sensitive to the effective mode index ([Formula: see text]) and phase speed ([Formula: see text]) of the surface waves. The results are consistent with the published results, which reflects the accuracy of the work. It is concluded that the appropriate choice of parameters can be used to achieve surface waves with the desired characteristics in the GHz range. The present work may have potential applications in surface waveguide design, surface wave speed controllers, surface communication devices, and light trapping configurations.

Dynamically Self-Reconfigurable Multifunctional All-Passive Metasurface

Reconfigurable metasurfaces have shown their great potentials and are needed in multiple applications, such as radar, wireless communication systems, and security. To date, however, it is challenging to realize low-cost and simple reconfigurable and multifunctional metasurfaces. In this proposed work, we present a low-cost and simple multifunctional all-passive metasurface that achieves a self-switching characteristic relying on a modulating incident wave without additional supporting devices. As proof-of-principle application examples, we realize a prototype of the proposed all-passive metasurface with an antenna for radome applications, that can achieve self-switching operation between a high directional antenna at the transmitting mode, and radar absorbing structure and reflector at the receiving mode. The reported strategy will open up a new avenue for future smart devices and could extend to some smarter applications such as high-power pulse skin protection for electronic devices and self-reconfigurable beam switching metasurface.

A Fully Phase-Modulated Metasurface as An Energy-Controllable Circular Polarization Router

Geometric metasurfaces primarily follow the physical mechanism of Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phases, empowering wavefront control of cross-polarized reflective/transmissive light components. However, inherently accompanying the cross-polarized components, the copolarized output components have not been attempted in parallel in existing works. Here, a general method is proposed to construct phase-modulated metasurfaces for implementing functionalities separately in co- and cross-polarized output fields under circularly polarized (CP) incidence, which is impossible to achieve with solely a geometric phase. By introducing a propagation phase as an additional degree of freedom, the electromagnetic (EM) energy carried by co- and cross-polarized transmitted fields can be fully phase-modulated with independent wavefronts. Under one CP incidence, a metasurface for separate functionalities with controllable energy repartition is verified by simulations and proof-of-principle microwave experiments. A variety of applications can be readily expected in spin-selective optics, spin-Hall metasurfaces, and multitasked metasurfaces operating in both reflective and transmissive modes.

Helicity-switched hologram utilizing a polarization-free multi-bit coding metasurface

In this work, a polarization-free coding metasurface is proposed to manipulate circularly polarized waves. Compared to a Pancharatnam-Berry phase metasurface, the proposed design not only allows for overcoming anti-symmetrical response characteristics between orthogonal circularly polarized states to enable achieving identical functionality under both right-handed and left-handed circularly polarized wave illuminations and avoiding polarization-conversion losses but also offers additional degree of freedom in the control of handedness. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a polarization-free multi-bit coding metasurface is designed to realize helicity-switched holograms in the microwave region. Experimental measurements performed on a fabricated prototype reveal outstanding imaging quality with extremely high imaging efficiency above 76% for arbitrary polarizations at 10 GHz. Our proposed method expands the route in manipulating circularly polarized waves and can be applied over the whole electromagnetic spectrum for wavefront manipulation.

Computational imaging with low-order OAM beams at microwave frequencies

With the distinguished wavefront characteristics of vortex electromagnetic wave carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), the OAM beams have been exploited for radar imaging in recent years. In this paper, the computational imaging model is built using OAM wave, which enables the target reconstruction with limited measurements. The measurement matrix is designed, and the target reconstruction method is proposed in the Cartesian coordinate. Simulation results indicate that the proposed computational imaging approach is robust against noise influence. Furthermore, the outdoor experiments are carried out, for the first time, to validate the super-resolution imaging ability of this novel technique. Experimental results show good agreement with theoretical analyses. This work can advance the development of OAM-based sensing technology.

Frequency-Domain and Spatial-Domain Reconfigurable Metasurface

The recently proposed digital reconfigurable metasurfaces make it possible to manipulate electromagnetic (EM) waves flexibly. However, most existing reconfigurable metasurfaces can only exhibit a relatively single performance in the spatial domain. Here, we propose a general frequency- and spatial-domain reconfigurable metasurface (FSRM) that can manipulate the EM waves and realize reconfigurable functions in multifrequency bands. In the frequency domain, FSRM can convert different linearly polarized (LP) incident waves into left- and right-hand circularly polarized reflected waves, in which PIN diodes are used to switch the polarization conversions in different frequency bands. When the polarization direction of the incident LP wave is 45° from the +x-axis, the FSRM modulates the incident waves as a 1-bit programmable metasurface in the spatial domain. Two-dimensional beam scanning, vortex beams with orbital angular momentums, and specific beams with desired transmission directions are demonstrated via real-time adjustment of the digital coding state. To validate the modulation methodology, an FSRM prototype is fabricated and measured, which could respond to different functions for different polarization incidences. The measured results agree well with the theoretical analyses. The proposed FSRM will provide new opportunities for smart material designs.

Generation of orbital angular momentum modes via holographic leaky-wave metasurfaces

Recently, electromagnetic (EM) waves carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) has received considerable attention in increasingly many different realms, such as communication systems, super-resolution imaging, optical communications and quantum state manipulation. In this paper, two different kinds of two dimensional (2-D) holographic leaky-wave metasurfaces with a single OAM mode at a single frequency (18 GHz) are introduced through designs and experiments. The classic leaky-wave and a microwave holography theorem are combined to construct the holographic leaky-wave metasurfaces. The leaky wave metasurfaces-based holographic concept are implemented with isotropic artificial surface impedances and made of hexagonal metallic patches. By varying the size of the metallic patches, the effective impedances may be realized. The monopole launchers are utilized for the excitation of TM surface mode, whereby their wave functions can be approximated by the Hankel function of the second kind. The objective waves represented by the desired beams carrying different orbital angular momentum modes. Electromagnetic full-wave simulations and experimental measurements have been performed to substantiate the proposed method.

Binary geometric phase metasurface for ultra-wideband microwave diffuse scatterings with optical transparency

Diffuse scatterings of electromagnetic (EM) waves by thin-thickness metasurfaces have promising prospects in many fields due to their abilities of significantly reducing the backward scatterings of targets. One of the major challenges is to further improve the working bandwidth. Here, we propose a binary geometric phase metasurface with high optical transparency to realize ultra-wideband backward scattering reduction through diffuse scatterings. A multi-layered reflective meta-structure is used as the basic building block while its out-of-phase counterpart is achieved through a geometric rotating operation. The proposed metasurface shows a polarization-insensitive wave-diffusion property with about 10 dB scattering reduction in an ultra-wide frequency band from 3.5 GHz to 16.6 GHz, reaching a fractional bandwidth of 130%. As the experimental demonstration, prototype is fabricated and measured that is in agreement with simulated results. The proposed metasurface provides an efficient way to tailor the exotic scattering features with simultaneously high optical transmittance, which can offer crucial benefits in many practical uses, for example, window stealth applications.

Double-arrow metasurface for dual-band and dual-mode polarization conversion

We present experimentally a double-arrow metasurface for high-efficiently manipulating the polarization states of electromagnetic waves in the dual-band. The metasurface is capable of converting a linearly polarized (LP) incident wave into a circularly polarized (CP) wave or its cross-polarized LP wave at different frequencies. It is numerically shown that in the two bands from 14.08 to 15.71 GHz and from 17.63 to 19.55 GHz the metasurface can convert the LP wave into CP wave, of which the axis ratio is lower than 3 dB. Meanwhile, the proposed metasurface also can convert the LP wave into its cross-polarized LP wave at 13.39 GHz and 20.29 GHz. To validate the theoretical analysis and simulated results, a prototype is fabricated and measured. The experimental results are reasonably consistent with the theoretical and simulated results, which demonstrates that such a metasurface can successfully achieve dual-band and dual-mode polarization conversion.

Dual-frequency dual orthogonal polarization wave multiplexing using decoupled pixels based on Holographic technique

The holographic technique is a promising way to manipulate light distribution and wave-front in the optical regime. In recent years, many researchers have extended this concept to microwave regime to manipulate phase, amplitude, and polarization of waves in a convenient way revealing diverse intriguing applications. Unlike the previous studies with optimization-based schemes, in this paper, we propose a simple route to design dual frequency dual-polarization holographic metasurfaces with negligible interference between the operating (lower and upper) frequencies. For this purpose, a Jerusalem-shape unit-cell is used to realize two distinct impedance distributions which yield two decoupled field profiles over the aperture of the metasurface at each frequency band. Consequently, the proposed metasurface radiator can operate in two frequency bands, independently. Each set of horizontal (vertical) cross-bars of the Jerusalem-shape unit-cell is illuminated by a vertical (horizontal) feeding network from one side of the metasurface. Side feeding has a null-free advantage, this undesired null emerges in central feeding metasurfaces and leads to an undesirable rabbit's ears phenomenon. As the proof-of-concept, a prototype of the metasurface radiator for operating at 11.5 GHz and 14 GHz is fabricated and measured. The experimental results depict a good agreement with the full-wave simulations.

Optically tunable terahertz chiral metasurface based on multi-layered graphene

Active manipulation of the polarization states at terahertz frequencies is crucially helpful for polarization-sensitive spectroscopy, having significant applications such as non-contact Hall measurements, vibrational circular dichroism measurements and anisotropy imaging. The weakness of polarization manipulation provided by natural materials can be overcomed by chiral metamaterials. Chiral metamaterials have a huge potential to achieve the necessary polarization effects, hence they provide the basis for applications such as ultracompact polarization components. Terahertz chiral metamaterials that allow dynamic polarization modulation of terahertz waves are of great practical interest and still challenging. Here, we show that terahertz metasurface based on the four conjugated “petal” resonators integrated with multi-layered graphene (MLG) can enable dynamically tunable chiroptical response using optical pumping. In particular, a change of ellipticity angle of 20° is observed around 0.76 THz under optical pumping by a 980 nm continuous wave (CW) laser. Furthermore, using temporal coupled-mode theory, our study also reveals that the chiroptical response of the proposed multi-layered graphene-based metasurface is strongly dependent on the influence of optical pumping on the loss parameters of resonance modes, leading to actively controllable polarization states of the transmitted terahertz waves. The present work paves the way for the realization of fundamental terahertz components capable for active polarization manipulation.

A Review of Orbital Angular Momentum Vortex Beams Generation: From Traditional Methods to Metasurfaces

In this paper, we review the generation of vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum in the microwave domain. We firstly present the theory of Laguerre–Gaussian beams where it is demonstrated that they carry such type of momentum. We further provide an overview of the classical methods used to generate orbital angular momentum vortex beams, which rely on two main methods; plane wave to vortex wave conversion and direct generation using radiating antennas. Then, we present recent progress in the physics of metasurfaces devoted to the generation of vortex beams with a discussion about reflective and transmissive metasurfaces for plane wave to vortex wave conversion as well as methods to reduce the intrinsic divergence characteristics of vortex beams. Finally, we conclude on this rapidly developing research field.

Emission of orbital angular momentum based on spoof localized surface plasmons

An approach to producing the orbital angular momentum (OAM) based on spoof localized surface plasmons (spoof LSPs) in microwave frequencies is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally. The fundamental and high-order modes of spoof LSPs occur when a textured metallic surface is excited with a microstrip line. Two orthogonal modes of spoof LSPs with +90° or -90° phase retardation are superimposed, resulting in a OAM-vortex mode. In the proposed design, two separate feeding ports are employed to excite the orthogonal resonant modes simultaneously, and a hybrid coupler is used to provide the required ±90° phase retardation. By loading a circularly arranged dipole array on the spoof LSPs, the confined surface waves of the spoof LSPs can be converted into radiated vortex waves. To verify this idea, an OAM-mode emitter with indices of ±3 is fabricated and measured. Experimental near-field distributions and far-field radiation patterns show excellent agreement with the simulated results.

Generation of wideband vortex beam with different OAM modes using third-order meta-frequency selective surface

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam generators have attracted tremendous interests recently due to their excellent performance and potential applications in wireless communication. However, the existing transmissive OAM generators suffer from several limitations, such as narrow bandwidth, high profile and low efficiency. In this study, a new wideband third-order meta-frequency selective surface (meta-FSS) for generating focusing vortex beam is developed. The proposed meta-FSS element is designed at X- band with a third-order band-pass filter property, which exhibits the merits of low profile, high transmissivity, and large angular stability. By employing the proposed meta-FSS element, prototypes of OAM generators for + 1 and -2 modes are designed, fabricated, and measured. Experimental results verify the ability of the proposed design to convert an incident left/right-handed circularly polarized (L/RHCP) spherical wave into a transmitted R/LHCP vortex carrying OAM wave from 9.0 GHz to 11.0 GHz with high mode purity. A good agreement is achieved between the experimental and numerical results, which demonstrates that the proposed structure paves the wave for generating desired OAM modes, and provides new possibility for designing novel low-profile wireless communication devices.

Electronically-engineered metasurface for directional beaming of electromagnetic waves through a subwavelength aperture

Controlling diffracted waves has attracted extensive research interests these last years particularly for the potential application of beaming functionality. In this paper, we propose to realize on-axis beaming of diffracted electromagnetic waves by using a phase- gradient metasurface. The structure is optimally designed in order to transform surface waves to propagating waves and to enhance transmission through a subwavelength aperture. Both numerical simulations and near-field measurements are performed at microwave frequencies to validate the proposed concept. Furthermore, the metasurface is frequency-tunable and can be controlled by an external DC bias voltage. Consequently, by adjusting the electromagnetic response of each unit cell through the bias voltage, different phase gradients can be tailored, enabling broadband operation spanning from 9 GHz to 12 GHz.

Tunable and Anisotropic Dual-Band Metamaterial Absorber Using Elliptical Graphene-Black Phosphorus Pairs

We numerically propose a dual-band absorber in the infrared region based on periodic elliptical graphene-black phosphorus (BP) pairs. The proposed absorber exhibits near-unity anisotropic absorption for both resonances due to the combination of graphene and BP. Each of the resonances is independently tunable via adjusting the geometric parameters. Besides, doping levels of graphene and BP can also tune resonant properties effectively. By analyzing the electric field distributions, surface plasmon resonances are observed in the graphene-BP ellipses, contributing to the strong and anisotropic plasmonic response. Moreover, the robustness for incident angles and polarization sensitivity are also illustrated.

Metasurface Loaded High Gain Antenna based Microwave Imaging using Iteratively Corrected Delay Multiply and Sum Algorithm

In this paper, the design consideration is investigated for a cylindrical system with low-cost and low-loss dielectric materials for the detection of breast tumor using iteratively corrected delay multiply and sum (IC- DMAS) algorithm. Anomaly in breast tissue is one of the most crucial health issues for women all over the world today. Emergency medical imaging diagnosis can be harmlessly managed by microwave-based analysis technology. Microwave Imaging (MI) has been proved to be a reliable health monitoring approach that can play a fundamental role in diagnosing anomaly in breast tissue. An array of 16 high gain microstrip antennas loaded by Index Near-Zero (INZ) metasurfaces (MS), having the impedance bandwidth of 8.5 GHz (2.70-11.20 GHz) are used as transceivers for the system. The MS is used to increase the electrical length of the signal that results in the gain enhancements. The antennas are mounted in a cylindrical arrangement on a mechanical rotating table along with a phantom mounting podium. A non-reflective positive control switching matrix is used for transmitting and receiving microwave signals. A set of lab-made realistic heterogeneous breast phantoms containing skin, fat, glandular, and tumor tissue dielectric properties in individual layers are used to verify the performance of the proposed technique. The control of the mechanical unit, data collection, and post-processing is conducted via MATLAB. The system can detect multiple tumor objects. The imaging results and numerical Signal to Mean Ratio (SMR) values of the experiment validate the system efficiency and performance that can be a viable solution for tumor detections.
