Bio-Inspired Stretchable and Contractible Tough Fiber by the Hybridization of GO/MWNT/Polyurethane

Rapid-Response Water-Shrink Films with High Output Work Density Based on Polyethylene Oxide and α-Cyclodextrin for Autonomous Wound Closure

Conventional wound closure methods, including sutures and tissue adhesives, present significant challenges for self-care treatment, particularly in the context of bleeding wounds. Existing stimuli-responsive contractile materials designed for autonomous wound closure frequently lack sufficient output work density to generate the force needed to bring the wound edges into proximity or necessitate stimuli that are not compatible with the human body. Here, semi-transparent, flexible, and water-responsive shrinkable films, composed of poly(ethylene oxide) and α-cyclodextrin, are reported. These films exhibit remarkable stability under ambient conditions and demonstrate significant contraction (≈50%) within 6 s upon exposure to water, generating substantial contractile stress (up to 6 MPa) and output work density (≈1028 kJ m-3), which is 100 times larger than that of conventional hydrogel and 25 times larger than that of skeletal muscles. Remarkably, upon hydration, these films are capable of lifting objects 10 000 times their own weight. Leveraging this technology, water-shrink tapes, which, upon contact with water, effectively constrict human skin and autonomously close bleeding wounds in animal models within 10 seconds, are developed further. This work offers a novel approach to skin wound management, showing significant potential for emergency and self-care scenarios.

Water-Responsive Self-Contractive Silk-Based Skin Anti-Aging Tensioners with Customizable Biofunctions

Skin anti-aging treatments have become increasingly popular. Currently, the prevalent treatment method involves implanting skin tension regulation threads (skin lifting threads) under the skin, and radiofrequency treatments. In this study, inspired by the natural supercontraction of spider silk, the molecular structure of silk fibroin fibers is modulated into an oriented configuration. This modification endows silk proteins with water-responsive self-contraction capabilities, leading to the development of innovative self-contracting silk-based skin tensioners (SSSTs). To align with clinical requirements, skin tension regulation materials are functionalized by testing for their self-contraction, near-infrared laser heating function, and bacteriostatic properties. The SSSTs exhibited remarkable self-contraction properties, drug-loading and sustained-release capabilities, notable antibacterial effects, controllable degradation, and good biocompatibility. Moreover, the near-infrared light heating function effectively increased subcutaneous temperature, demonstrating its potential for enhancing and prolonging skin lifting effects. Therefore, SSSTs can be applied for skin tension regulation to improve and delay skin aging. The results may pave the way for novel strategies in skin rejuvenation, with broad implications for the field of skin anti-aging.

Water-responsive supercontractile polymer films for bioelectronic interfaces

Connecting different electronic devices is usually straightforward because they have paired, standardized interfaces, in which the shapes and sizes match each other perfectly. Tissue-electronics interfaces, however, cannot be standardized, because tissues are soft1-3 and have arbitrary shapes and sizes4-6. Shape-adaptive wrapping and covering around irregularly sized and shaped objects have been achieved using heat-shrink films because they can contract largely and rapidly when heated7. However, these materials are unsuitable for biological applications because they are usually much harder than tissues and contract at temperatures higher than 90 °C (refs. 8,9). Therefore, it is challenging to prepare stimuli-responsive films with large and rapid contractions for which the stimuli and mechanical properties are compatible with vulnerable tissues and electronic integration processes. Here, inspired by spider silk10-12, we designed water-responsive supercontractile polymer films composed of poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(ethylene glycol)-α-cyclodextrin inclusion complex, which are initially dry, flexible and stable under ambient conditions, contract by more than 50% of their original length within seconds (about 30% per second) after wetting and become soft (about 100 kPa) and stretchable (around 600%) hydrogel thin films thereafter. This supercontraction is attributed to the aligned microporous hierarchical structures of the films, which also facilitate electronic integration. We used this film to fabricate shape-adaptive electrode arrays that simplify the implantation procedure through supercontraction and conformally wrap around nerves, muscles and hearts of different sizes when wetted for in vivo nerve stimulation and electrophysiological signal recording. This study demonstrates that this water-responsive material can play an important part in shaping the next-generation tissue-electronics interfaces as well as broadening the biomedical application of shape-adaptive materials.

Fibrous wearable and implantable bioelectronics

Fibrous wearable and implantable devices have emerged as a promising technology, offering a range of new solutions for minimally invasive monitoring of human health. Compared to traditional biomedical devices, fibers offer a possibility for a modular design compatible with large-scale manufacturing and a plethora of advantages including mechanical compliance, breathability, and biocompatibility. The new generation of fibrous biomedical devices can revolutionize easy-to-use and accessible health monitoring systems by serving as building blocks for most common wearables such as fabrics and clothes. Despite significant progress in the fabrication, materials, and application of fibrous biomedical devices, there is still a notable absence of a comprehensive and systematic review on the subject. This review paper provides an overview of recent advancements in the development of fibrous wearable and implantable electronics. We categorized these advancements into three main areas: manufacturing processes, platforms, and applications, outlining their respective merits and limitations. The paper concludes by discussing the outlook and challenges that lie ahead for fiber bioelectronics, providing a holistic view of its current stage of development.

Multifunctionality in Nature: Structure-Function Relationships in Biological Materials

Modern material design aims to achieve multifunctionality through integrating structures in a diverse range, resulting in simple materials with embedded functions. Biological materials and organisms are typical examples of this concept, where complex functionalities are achieved through a limited material base. This review highlights the multiscale structural and functional integration of representative natural organisms and materials, as well as biomimetic examples. The impact, wear, and crush resistance properties exhibited by mantis shrimp and ironclad beetle during predation or resistance offer valuable inspiration for the development of structural materials in the aerospace field. Investigating cyanobacteria that thrive in extreme environments can contribute to developing living materials that can serve in places like Mars. The exploration of shape memory and the self-repairing properties of spider silk and mussels, as well as the investigation of sensing-actuating and sensing-camouflage mechanisms in Banksias, chameleons, and moths, holds significant potential for the optimization of soft robot designs. Furthermore, a deeper understanding of mussel and gecko adhesion mechanisms can have a profound impact on medical fields, including tissue engineering and drug delivery. In conclusion, the integration of structure and function is crucial for driving innovations and breakthroughs in modern engineering materials and their applications. The gaps between current biomimetic designs and natural organisms are also discussed.

Spider Silk-Inspired Artificial Fibers

Spider silk is a natural polymeric fiber with high tensile strength, toughness, and has distinct thermal, optical, and biocompatible properties. The mechanical properties of spider silk are ascribed to its hierarchical structure, including primary and secondary structures of the spidroins (spider silk proteins), the nanofibril, the "core-shell", and the "nano-fishnet" structures. In addition, spider silk also exhibits remarkable properties regarding humidity/water response, water collection, light transmission, thermal conductance, and shape-memory effect. This motivates researchers to prepare artificial functional fibers mimicking spider silk. In this review, the authors summarize the study of the structure and properties of natural spider silk, and the biomimetic preparation of artificial fibers from different types of molecules and polymers by taking some examples of artificial fibers exhibiting these interesting properties. In conclusion, biomimetic studies have yielded several noteworthy findings in artificial fibers with different functions, and this review aims to provide indications for biomimetic studies of functional fibers that approach and exceed the properties of natural spider silk.

Strategy to Fabricate a Strong and Supertough Bio-Inspired Fiber with Organic-Inorganic Networks in a Green and Scalable Way

Green and scalable production of some fibrous materials with higher fracture energy has long been the goal of researchers. Although some progress has been made in recent years in the research of materials with high fracture energy, inspired by the fiber structure of spider silk, it is still a great challenge to produce artificial fibers with extremely high toughness using a simple and green process. Here, we use the molecular and nanoscale engineering of calcium phosphate oligomers (CaP, < 1 nm) and waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) macromolecules that have strong interactions to form organic-inorganic networks just like β-sheet crystalline and flexible amorphous regions in spider silk. Through a simple and green route based on widespread paper string processing techniques, we fabricate a strong and supertough bioinspired fiber with a high strength (442 MPa), which is 7-15 times higher than the strength of counterpart PU (20-30 MPa), and a super toughness (640 MJ m^-3), which is 2-3.5 times higher than the toughness of spider dragline silk. This technique provides a strategy for industrially manufacturing spider fiber-like artificial fibers with a super toughness.

Biomimetic cell-actuated artificial muscle with nanofibrous bundles

Biohybrid artificial muscle produced by integrating living muscle cells and their scaffolds with free movement in vivo is promising for advanced biomedical applications, including cell-based microrobotic systems and therapeutic drug delivery systems. Herein, we provide a biohybrid artificial muscle constructed by integrating living muscle cells and their scaffolds, inspired by bundled myofilaments in skeletal muscle. First, a bundled biohybrid artificial muscle was fabricated by the integration of skeletal muscle cells and hydrophilic polyurethane (HPU)/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanofibers into a fiber shape similar to that of natural skeletal muscle. The HPU/CNT nanofibers provided a stretchable basic backbone of the 3-dimensional fiber structure, which is similar to actin-myosin scaffolds. The incorporated skeletal muscle fibers contribute to the actuation of biohybrid artificial muscle. In fact, electrical field stimulation reversibly leads to the contraction of biohybrid artificial muscle. Therefore, the current development of cell-actuated artificial muscle provides great potential for energy delivery systems as actuators for implantable medibot movement and drug delivery systems. Moreover, the innervation of the biohybrid artificial muscle with motor neurons is of great interest for human-machine interfaces.
