In Vitro Osteocompatibility and Enhanced Biocorrosion Resistance of Diammonium Hydrogen Phosphate-Pretreated/Poly(ether imide) Coatings on Magnesium for Orthopedic Application

Facile preparation of high-performance plywood adhesive from gelatinized corn starch crosslinked with ammonium dihydrogen phosphate

A flame retardant high-performance gelatinized starch (GS)-ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) wood adhesive, named GS-ADP adhesive was prepared by condensation of GS and ADP under acidic condition. The preparation process of GS-ADP adhesive is very simple by mixing and stirring GS and ADP evenly at room temperature. The results revealed that the GS-ADP adhesive has good storage stability and water resistance, and its wet shear strength is much higher than that of phenolic resin (PF) adhesive. Markedly, the cone calorimeter test results show that G-ADP adhesive has good flame retardancy, and the plywood based on GS-ADP adhesive has good flame retardancy. Meanwhile, it can be seen from dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) that GS-ADP has excellent modulus of elasticity (MOE), high glass transition temperature (Tg) and good thermal stability. The findings suggest that GS-ADP could be a viable substitute for PF resin in structural wood fabrication.

Effect of Microstructure Refinement on the Corrosion Behavior of the Bioresorbable Mg-1Zn-0.2Ca and Mg-1Ca Alloys

This paper presents a comprehensive study of the effect of the processing by high-pressure torsion (HPT) on the corrosion behavior in Ringer's solution for two popular bioresorbable magnesium alloys-Mg-1Ca and Mg-1Zn-0.2Ca. Three states were studied for each alloy-the initial homogenized state, the as-HPT-processed state and the state after subsequent annealing at 250 and 300 °C. It is shown that HPT processing results in a very strong grain refinement in both alloys down to a mean grain size of about 210 nm for the Mg-1Ca alloy and 90 nm for the Mg-1Zn-0.2Ca alloy, but their corrosion resistance values differ significantly (by an order of magnitude). The conducted precision scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction studies demonstrate that such a difference in the corrosion behavior is conditioned by a difference in the morphology and origin of the nano-sized particles of second phases, as well as by a change in the electrochemical properties of the "particle-α-Mg" pair. The obtained results are discussed from the perspective of the innovative applications of biodegradable Mg alloys for the manufacture of advanced medical implants and products.

Clinical translation and challenges of biodegradable magnesium-based interference screws in ACL reconstruction

As one of the most promising fixators developed for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, biodegradable magnesium (Mg)-based interference screws have gained increasing attention attributed to their appropriate modulus and favorable biological properties during degradation after surgical insertion. However, its fast degradation and insufficient mechanical strength have also been recognized as one of the major causes to limit their further application clinically. This review focused on the following four parts. Firstly, the advantages of Mg or its alloys over their counterparts as orthopaedic implants in the fixation of tendon grafts in ACL reconstruction were discussed. Subsequently, the underlying mechanisms behind the contributions of Mg ions to the tendon-bone healing were introduced. Thirdly, the technical challenges of Mg-based interference screws towards clinical trials were discussed, which was followed by the introduction of currently used modification methods for gaining improved corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Finally, novel strategies including development of Mg/Titanium (Ti) hybrid fixators and Mg-based screws with innovative structure for achieving clinically customized therapies were proposed. Collectively, the advancements in the basic and translational research on the Mg-based interference screws may lay the foundation for exploring a new era in the treatment of the tendon-bone insertion (TBI) and related disorders.

Tuning the Biointerface: Low-Temperature Surface Modification Strategies for Orthopedic Implants to Enhance Osteogenic and Antimicrobial Activity

As both the average life expectancy and incidence of bone tissue reconstruction increases, development of load-bearing implantable materials that simultaneously enhance osseointegration while preventing postoperative infection is crucial. To address this need, significant research efforts have been dedicated to developing surface modification strategies for metallic load-bearing implants and scaffolds. Despite the abundance of strategies reported, many address only one factor, for example, surface chemistry or topography. Furthermore, the incorporation of surface features to increase osteocompatibility can increase the probability of infection, by encouraging the formation of bacterial biofilms. To truly advance this field, research efforts must focus on developing multifunctional coatings that concurrently address these complex and competing requirements. In addition, particular emphasis should be placed on utilizing surface modification processes that are versatile, low cost, and scalable, for ease of translation to mass manufacturing and clinical use. The aim of this short Review is to highlight recent advances in scalable and multifunctional surface modification techniques that obtain a programmed response at the bone tissue/implant interface. Low-temperature approaches based on macromolecule immobilization, electrochemical techniques, and solution processes are discussed. Although the strategies discussed in this Review have not yet been approved for clinical use, they show great promise toward developing the next generation of ultra-long-lasting biomaterials for joint and bone tissue repair.

Construction of tantalum/poly(ether imide) coatings on magnesium implants with both corrosion protection and osseointegration properties

Poly(ether imide) (PEI) has shown satisfactory corrosion protection capability with good adhesion strength as a coating for magnesium (Mg), a potential candidate of biodegradable orthopedic implant material. However, its innate hydrophobic property causes insufficient osteoblast affinity and a lack of osseointegration. Herein, we modify the physical and chemical properties of a PEI-coated Mg implant. A plasma immersion ion implantation technique is combined with direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering to introduce biologically compatible tantalum (Ta) onto the surface of the PEI coating. The PEI-coating layer is not damaged during this process owing to the extremely short processing time (30 s), retaining its high corrosion protection property and adhesion stability. The Ta-implanted layer (roughly 10-nm-thick) on the topmost PEI surface generates long-term surface hydrophilicity and favorable surface conditions for pre-osteoblasts to adhere, proliferate, and differentiate. Furthermore, in a rabbit femur study, the Ta/PEI-coated Mg implant demonstrates significantly enhanced bone tissue affinity and osseointegration capability. These results indicate that Ta/PEI-coated Mg is promising for achieving early mechanical fixation and long-term success in biodegradable orthopedic implant applications.
