Abstract
The construction of flexible actuators with ultra-fast actuation and robust mechanical properties is crucial for soft robotics and smart devices, but still remains a challenge. Inspired by the unique mechanism of pinecones dispersing seeds in nature, a hygroscopic actuator with interlayer network-bonding connected gradient structure is fabricated. Unlike most conventional bilayer actuator designs, the strategy leverages biobased polyphenols to construct strong interfacial H-bonding networks between 1D cellulose nanofibers and 2D graphene oxide, endowing the materials with high tensile strength (172 MPa) and excellent toughness (6.64 MJ m-3). Furthermore, the significant difference in hydrophilicity between GO and rGO, along with the dense interlayer H-bonding, enables ultra-fast water exchange during water absorption and desorption processes. The resulted actuator exhibits ultra-fast driving speed (154° s-1), excellent pressure-resistant and cyclic stability. Taking advantages of these benefits, the actuator can be fabricated into smart devices (such as smart grippers, humidity control switches) with significant potential for practical applications. The presented approach to constructing interlayer H-bonding in gradient structures is instructive for achieving high performance and functionalization of biomass nanomaterials and the complex of 1D/2D nanomaterials.

Abstract
Biological species can walk, swim, fly, jump, and climb with fast response speeds and motion complexity. These remarkable functions are accomplished by means of soft actuation organisms, which are commonly composed of muscle tissue systems. To achieve the creation of their biomimetic artificial counterparts, various biomimetic stimuli-responsive materials have been synthesized and developed in recent decades. They can respond to various external stimuli in the form of structural or morphological transformations by actively or passively converting input energy into mechanical energy. They are the core element of soft actuators for typical smart devices like soft robots, artificial muscles, intelligent sensors and nanogenerators. Significant progress has been made in the development of bioinspired stimuli-responsive materials. However, these materials have not been comprehensively summarized with specific actuation mechanisms in the literature. In this review, we will discuss recent advances in biomimetic stimuli-responsive materials that are instrumental for soft actuators. Firstly, different stimuli-responsive principles for soft actuators are discussed, including fluidic, electrical, thermal, magnetic, light, and chemical stimuli. We further summarize the state-of-the-art stimuli-responsive materials for soft actuators and explore the advantages and disadvantages of using electroactive polymers, magnetic soft composites, photo-thermal responsive polymers, shape memory alloys and other responsive soft materials. Finally, we provide a critical outlook on the field of stimuli-responsive soft actuators and emphasize the challenges in the process of their implementation to various industries.

Abstract
Multivapor-responsive biocompatible soft actuators have immense potential for applications in soft robotics and medical technology. We report fast, fully reversible, and multivapor-responsive controlled actuation of a pure cassava-starch-based film. Notably, this starch-based actuator sustains its actuated state for over 60 min with a continuous supply of water vapor. The durability of the film and repeatability of the actuation performance have been established upon subjecting the film to more than 1400 actuation cycles in the presence of water vapor. The starch-based actuators exhibit intriguing antagonistic actuation characteristics when exposed to different solvent vapors. In particular, they bend upward in response to water vapor and downward when exposed to ethanol vapor. This fascinating behavior opens up new possibilities for controlling the magnitude and direction of actuation by manipulating the ratio of water to ethanol in the binary solution. Additionally, the control of the bending axis of the starch-based actuator, when exposed to water vapor, is achieved by imprinting-orientated patterns on the surface of the starch film. The effect of microstructure, postsynthesis annealing, and pH of the starch solution on the actuation performance of the starch film is studied in detail. Our starch-based actuator can lift 10 times its own weight upon exposure to ethanol vapor. It can generate force ∼4.2 mN upon exposure to water vapor. To illustrate the vast potential of our cassava-starch-based actuators, we have showcased various proof-of-concept applications, ranging from biomimicry to crawling robots, locomotion near perspiring human skin, bidirectional electric switches, ventilation in the presence of toxic vapors, and smart lifting systems. These applications significantly broaden the practical uses of these starch-based actuators in the field of soft robotics.

Abstract
Flexible actuators have garnered significant interest in the domains of biomedical devices, human-machine interfaces, and smart wearables. However, the mechanical properties of existing materials are not sufficiently robust, and the expensive and time-consuming pretreatment process and the ambiguous high-degree-of-freedom deformation mechanism make it difficult to meet the demands of industrialized production. Hence, drawing inspiration from the adaptable movement of living organisms in the natural world, this research created and engineered a fully textile-based humidity-sensitive flexible actuator (TbHs-FA) using high-cost-effective viscose/PET fibers as raw materials. The breakthrough development in actuation performance is covered, including substantial contraction force (92.53 cN), high actuation curvature (16.78 cm-1), and fast response (264 cN s-1 and 46.61 cm-1 s-1). Additionally, the programmable stiffness system and weave structure give TbHs-FAs low hysteresis and fatigue resistance, narrowing the gap between the conceptual laboratory-scale design of existing fully textile-based humidity-sensitive flexible actuators and actual textiles. The high-degree-of-freedom and large bending deformation mechanisms are elucidated for the first time by combining microscopic mechanical structure simulation and macroscopic energy conversion analysis. The novel humidity-sensitive flexible actuator possesses strong mechanical qualities, making it suitable for applications such as flexible robots, medicinal devices, and smart wearables.

Abstract
As an important branch of robotics, soft robots have the advantages of strong flexibility, a simple structure, and high safety. These characteristics enable soft robots to be widely used in various fields such as biomedicine, military reconnaissance, and micro space exploration. However, contemporary soft crawling robots still face problems such as the single drive mode and complex external equipment. In this study, we propose an innovative design of an inchworm-like soft crawling robot utilizing the synergistic interaction of electricity and moisture for its hybrid dual-drive locomotion. The legs of the soft robot are mainly made of GO-CNT/PE composite film, which can convert its own volume expansion into a corresponding bending motion after being stimulated by electricity or moisture. Unlike other drive methods, it requires less power and precision from external devices. The combination of the two driving methods greatly improves the environmental adaptability of the soft robot, and we developed visible light as the driving method on the basis of the dual drive. Finally, we also verified the robot's excellent load capacity, climbing ability, and optical drive effect, which laid the foundation for the application of soft robots in the future.

Abstract
Polyurethane (PU) refers to the polymer containing carbamate groups in its molecular structure, generally obtained by the reaction of isocyanate and alcohol. Because of its flexible formulation, diverse product forms, and excellent performance, it has been widely used in mechanical engineering, electronic equipment, biomedical applications, etc. Through physical or chemical methods, ionic groups are introduced into PU, which gives PU electrical conductivity, flame-retardant, and antistatic properties, thus expanding the application fields of PU, especially in flexible devices such as sensors, actuators, and functional membranes for batteries and gas absorption. In this review, we firstly introduced the characteristics of PU in chemical and microphase structures and their related physical and chemical performance. To improve the performance of PU, ionic liquids (ILs) were applied in the processing or synthesis of PU, resulting in a new type of PU called ionic PU. In the following part of this review, we mainly summarized the fabrication methods of IL-modified PUs via physical blending and the chemical copolymerization method. Then, we summarized the research progress of the applications for IL-modified PUs in different fields, including sensors, actuators, transistors, antistatic films, etc. Finally, we discussed the future development trends and challenges faced by IL-modified PUs.

Abstract
Water-responsive (WR) materials, due to their controllable mechanical response to humidity without energy actuation, have attracted lots of attention to the development of smart actuators. WR material-based smart actuators can transform natural humidity to a required mechanical motion and have been widely used in various fields, such as soft robots, micro-generators, smart building materials, and textiles. In this paper, the development of smart actuators based on different WR materials has been reviewed systematically. First, the properties of different biological WR materials and the corresponding actuators are summarized, including plant materials, animal materials, and microorganism materials. Additionally, various synthetic WR materials and their related applications in smart actuators have also been introduced in detail, including hydrophilic polymers, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, and other synthetic materials. Finally, the challenges of the WR actuator are analyzed from the three perspectives of actuator design, control methods, and compatibility, and the potential solutions are also discussed. This paper may be useful for the development of not only soft actuators that are based on WR materials, but also smart materials applied to renewable energy.

Abstract
Multiresponsive and high-performance flexible actuators with a simple configuration, high mechanical strength, and low-power consumption are highly desirable for soft robotics. Here, a novel mechanically robust and multiresponsive Ti3C2Tx MXene-based actuator with high actuation performance via dual-mechanism synergistic effect driven by the hygroexpansion of bacterial cellulose (BC) layer and the thermal expansion of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) layer is developed. The actuator is flexible and shows an ultrahigh tensile strength of 195 MPa. Unlike the conventional bimorph-structured actuators based on a single-mechanism, the actuator developed provides a favorable architecture for dual-mechanism synergism, resulting in exceptionally reversible actuation performance under electricity and near-infrared (NIR) light stimuli. Typically, the developed actuator can produce the largest bending angle (∼400°) at the lowest voltage (≤4 V) compared with that reported previously for single mechanism soft actuators. Furthermore, the actuator also can be driven by a NIR light at a 2 m distance, displaying an excellent long-distance photoresponsive property. Finally, various intriguing applications are demonstrated to show the great potential of the actuator for soft robotics.

Abstract
Inspired by the sophisticated design of biological systems, interest in soft intelligent actuators has increased significantly in recent years, providing attractive strategies for the design of elaborate soft mechanical systems. For the construction of those soft actuators, carbon nanomaterials were extensively and successfully explored for the properties of highly conductive, electrothermal, and photothermal conversion. This review aims to trace the recent achievements for the material and structural design as well as the general mechanisms of the soft actuators, paying particular attention to the contribution of carbon nanomaterials resulted from their diversified interplaying properties, which realized the flexible and dexterous deformation responding to various environmental stimuli, including light, electricity and humidity. The properties and mechanisms of soft actuators are summarized and the potential for future applications and research are presented.

Abstract
Colloidal self-assembly refers to a solution-processed assembly of nanometer-/micrometer-sized, well-dispersed particles into secondary structures, whose collective properties are controlled by not only nanoparticle property but also the superstructure symmetry, orientation, phase, and dimension. This combination of characteristics makes colloidal superstructures highly susceptible to remote stimuli or local environmental changes, representing a prominent platform for developing stimuli-responsive materials and smart devices. Chemists are achieving even more delicate control over their active responses to various practical stimuli, setting the stage ready for fully exploiting the potential of this unique set of materials. This review addresses the assembly of colloids into stimuli-responsive or smart nanostructured materials. We first delineate the colloidal self-assembly driven by forces of different length scales. A set of concepts and equations are outlined for controlling the colloidal crystal growth, appreciating the importance of particle connectivity in creating responsive superstructures. We then present working mechanisms and practical strategies for engineering smart colloidal assemblies. The concepts underpinning separation and connectivity control are systematically introduced, allowing active tuning and precise prediction of the colloidal crystal properties in response to external stimuli. Various exciting applications of these unique materials are summarized with a specific focus on the structure-property correlation in smart materials and functional devices. We conclude this review with a summary of existing challenges in colloidal self-assembly of smart materials and provide a perspective on their further advances to the next generation.

Abstract
Fabrication of superhydrophobic films with large and sensitive deformed actuations driven by light stimuli for the emerging application fields such as biomimetic devices, artificial muscles, soft robotics, electric switches, and water-droplet manipulation remains challenging. Herein, a facile strategy is proposed to fabricate a light stimuli-responsive superhydrophobic film (LSSF) by integrating a bottom carbon nanotube/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (CNT/PVDF) layer, a middle chitosan (CS) layer, and a top superhydrophobic fumed silica-chitosan (SiO2/CS) layer modified with 1H,1H,2H,2H-heptafluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (FAS). Under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation, the LSSF quickly bent toward the CS layer with a large bending angle (>200°), high sensitivity (∼7 °C change), and great repeatability (>1000 cycles), which was attributed to the significant difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between CS and PVDF and the water desorption-induced volume shrinking in the CS layer. Furthermore, the LSSF also exhibited superhydrophobicity with a high water contact angle of 165° and a low water sliding angle of 2.8°. Importantly, owing to the high light absorption of CNTs, the LSSF-based biomimetic flower was able to not only bloom under NIR light exposure but also normally work when applying sunlight irradiation. Thanks to the electric conductivity and excellent water repellency, the LSSF was capable of being designed as an electric switch to remotely turn on/off the circuit even under a watery environment, and the LSSF was further successfully applied in water-droplet manipulation. The findings conceivably provided a new strategy to fabricate light stimuli-responsive superhydrophobic films for versatile applications.

Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO), which has many oxygen functional groups, is a promising candidate for use in moisture-responsive sensors and actuators due to the strong water-GO interaction and the ultrafast transport of water molecules within the stacked GO sheets. In the last 5 years, moisture-responsive actuators based on GO have shown distinct advantages over other stimuli-responsive materials and devices. Particularly, inspired by nature organisms, various moisture-enabled soft robots have been successfully developed via rational assembly of the GO-based actuators. Herein, the milestones in the development of moisture-responsive soft robots based on GO are summarized. In addition, the working mechanisms, design principles, current achievement, and prospects are also comprehensively reviewed. In particular, the GO-based soft robots are at the forefront of the advancement of automatable smart devices.

Abstract
Microactuators, which can transform external stimuli into mechanical motion at microscale, have attracted extensive attention because they can be used to construct microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and/or microrobots, resulting in extensive applications in a large number of fields such as noninvasive surgery, targeted delivery, and biomedical machines. In contrast to classical 2D MEMS devices, 3D microactuators provide a new platform for the research of stimuli-responsive functional devices. However, traditional planar processing techniques based on photolithography are inadequate in the construction of 3D microstructures. To solve this issue, researchers have proposed many strategies, among which 3D laser printing is becoming a prospective technique to create smart devices at the microscale because of its versatility, adjustability, and flexibility. Here, we review the recent progress in stimulus-responsive 3D microactuators fabricated with 3D laser printing depending on different stimuli. Then, an outlook of the design, fabrication, control, and applications of 3D laser-printed microactuators is propounded with the goal of providing a reference for related research.

Abstract
Stimulus-responsive soft actuators show great potential in intelligent robot systems for their various virtues, such as arbitrary shape morphing, outstanding adaptability to environment, and multidegrees of freedom. However, it is extremely challenging to achieve a combination of excellent actuating performance and robust mechanical strength as well as self-healing property. Herein we report a near-infrared light-responsive soft actuator based on the synergistic effects of a crystalline physical cross-linked network and a hydrogen bonding supramolecular network. The actuator exhibits outstanding comprehensive performance including fast and reliable light-responsive behavior (bending angle over 90° within 1.6 s), robust mechanical strength (12.52 MPa), superfast self-healing speed (2 s), and satisfactory self-healing efficiency in both mechanical (87.68%) and actuating (99.50%) performance. In addition, it is convenient to fabricate and reconfigure the actuators by a mild-temperature molding strategy to acquire various three-dimensional structures, thus achieving diverse actuating locomotion. This work provides a powerful and facile strategy to prepare soft actuators with intriguing performance, allowing significant progress in broadening their practical application.

Abstract
Achieving broadband and sensitive mechanical wave detection with fast time response remains a great challenge. Here, we exploited the polarization-sensitive absorption characteristics and ultrafast photoelectric response of graphene to construct a broadband and ultrasensitive detector with a nanosecond response for mechanical wave detection. The unprecedented performance of the graphene-based detector allowed us to detect high-frequency mechanical waves over 100 MHz with a detection limit of 0.18 kPa. Moreover, we applied the detector in high-contrast photoacoustic imaging of human hairs and a mouse hindlimb to demonstrate its capability in detection of photoacoustic waves. This device could also find application in other areas such as THz detection and modulation.
