Synthesis of Submicron PEDOT Particles of High Electrical Conductivity via Continuous Aerosol Vapor Polymerization

Sensitive and selective electrochemical aptasensing method for the voltammetric determination of dopamine based on AuNPs/PEDOT-ERGO nanocomposites

In this study, the effects of phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and graphene oxide (GO) as supporting electrolytes and dopants on the electropolymerization process of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) were investigated. It was found that the PEDOT-ERGO nanocomposites obtained by a simple one-step electrochemical redox polymerization method using GO as the only supporting electrolyte and dopant possess excellent electrochemical properties. Then, the PEDOT-ERGO nanocomposites were used as electrode substrate to further modify with AuNPs, and an electrochemical aptasensor based on AuNPs/PEDOT-ERGO nanocomposites was successfully constructed for the sensitive and selective determination of dopamine (DA). Comparison of the cyclic voltammetric response of different neurotransmitters before and after aptamer assembly showed that the aptamer significantly improved the selectivity of the sensor for DA. The low detection limit of 1.0 μM (S/N = 3) indicated the good electrochemical performance of the PEDOT-ERGO nanocomposite film. Moreover, the aptasensor showed good recoveries in 50-fold diluted fetal bovine serum with RSD values all less than 5 % (n = 5), indicating that the PEDOT-ERGO nanocomposites and the electrochemical aptasensor have promising applications in other neurochemicals assay and biomedical analysis.

Conducting Polymer Nanoparticles with Intrinsic Aqueous Dispersibility for Conductive Hydrogels

Conductive hydrogels are promising materials with mixed ionic-electronic conduction to interface living tissue (ionic signal transmission) with medical devices (electronic signal transmission). The hydrogel form factor also uniquely bridges the wet/soft biological environment with the dry/hard environment of electronics. The synthesis of hydrogels for bioelectronics requires scalable, biocompatible fillers with high electronic conductivity and compatibility with common aqueous hydrogel formulations/resins. Despite significant advances in the processing of carbon nanomaterials, fillers that satisfy all these requirements are lacking. Herein, intrinsically dispersible acid-crystalized PEDOT:PSS nanoparticles (ncrys-PEDOTX ) are reported which are processed through a facile and scalable nonsolvent induced phase separation method from commercial PEDOT:PSS without complex instrumentation. The particles feature conductivities of up to 410 S cm-1 , and when compared to other common conductive fillers, display remarkable dispersibility, enabling homogeneous incorporation at relatively high loadings within diverse aqueous biomaterial solutions without additives or surfactants. The aqueous dispersibility of the ncrys-PEDOTX particles also allows simple incorporation into resins designed for microstereolithography without sonication or surfactant optimization; complex biomedical structures with fine features (< 150 µm) are printed with up to 10% particle loading . The ncrys-PEDOTX particles overcome the challenges of traditional conductive fillers, providing a scalable, biocompatible, plug-and-play platform for soft organic bioelectronic materials.

In situ engineering of Au-Ag alloy embedded PEDOT nanohybrids at a solvent/non-solvent interface for the electrochemical enzyme-free detection of histamine

Steadfast efforts have been made to develop novel materials and incorporate them into functional devices for practical applications, pushing the research on electroactive materials to the forefront of nano electronics. Liquid/liquid interface-assisted polymerization offers a scalable methodology to fabricate hybrid materials with multifunctional applications, in contrast to the conventional and ubiquitous routes. Here, we explored this efficient and versatile approach toward the in situ tailoring of Au-Ag alloy nanostructures with a conducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene) (PEDOT). With the appropriate choice of organic and inorganic phases for the distribution of monomer and oxidant, the miscibility restraints of the reactants in a single phase were alleviated. Effective nanostructure tuning of highly crystalline and electroactive PEDOT/Au-Ag alloy has been achieved by varying the molar ratio of Au³⁺/Ag⁺ in the reaction mixture. The as-synthesized composite is further explored to detect neuromodulator histamine (HA), which displays high sensitivity with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.5 nM, and selectivity even in the presence of various interfering analogs of 10-fold concentration. Subsequently, density functional theory (DFT) simulations are employed to assess the mode of interaction between HA and the electroactive surfaces. The competency to detect HA in preserved food entails its potential in food spoilage monitoring. Furthermore, the detection of histamine generated by sub-cultured human neuronal cells SH-SY5Y proves its practical viability in health monitoring devices.

Solution-Processable PEDOT Particles for Coatings of Untreated 3D-Printed Thermoplastics

Lack of solution processability is the main bottleneck in research progression and commercialization of conducting polymers. The current strategy of employing a water-soluble dopant (such as PEDOT:PSS) is not feasible with organic solvents, thus limiting compatibility on hydrophobic surfaces, such as three-dimensional (3D) printable thermoplastics. In this article, we utilize a colloidal dispersion of PEDOT particles to overcome this limitation and formulate an organic paint demonstrating conformal coating on 3D-printed objects. We start with synthesizing PEDOT particles that possess a low electrical resistance (gap resistance of 4.2 ± 0.5 Ω/mm). A particle-based organic paint is formulated and applied via brush painting. Coated objects show a surface resistance of 1 kΩ/cm, comparable to an object printed by commercial conductive filaments. The coating enables the fabrication of pH and strain sensors. Highly conductive PEDOT particles also absorb light strongly, especially in the near-infrared (NIR) range due to the high concentration of charge carriers on the polymer's conjugated backbones (i.e., polarons and bipolarons). PEDOT converts light to heat efficiently, resulting in a superior photothermal activity that is demonstrated by the flash ignition of a particle-impregnated cotton ball. Consequently, painted 3D prints are highly effective in converting NIR light to heat, and a 5 s exposure to a NIR laser (808 nm, 0.8 mW/cm²) leads to a record high-temperature increase (194.5 °C) among PEDOT-based coatings.

Electrochemical sensor formed from poly(3,4-ethylenedioxyselenophene) and nitrogen-doped graphene composite for dopamine detection

In this study, an electrochemical sensor for dopamine (DA) detection has been developed by a composite of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxyselenophene) (PEDOS) and nitrogen-doped graphene (PEDOS/N-Gr) using an in situ polymerization method. Its structure and properties were then compared with those of the composites of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/nitrogen-doped graphene (PEDOT/N-Gr), which were prepared by the same methods. FT-IR, Raman, UV-vis, XPS, mapping and SEM investigated the structure and morphology of these composites. These revealed that PEDOS/N-Gr had a higher conjugation degree than PEDOT/N-Gr. The synergetic effect between PEDOS and N-Gr was beneficial for the formation of a homogenous surface coating. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) methods were conducted for electrochemical detection of DA. Compared with PEDOT/N-Gr, the PEDOS/N-Gr displayed an enhanced sensitivity and electrocatalytic performance for DA detection with linear ranges of 0.008-80 μM (PEDOT/N-Gr: 0.04-70 μM) and limits of detection (LOD) of 0.0066 μM (S/N = 3) (PEDOT/N-Gr: 0.018 μM (S/N = 3)).

Spray characteristics of an ultrasonic microdroplet generator with a continuously variable operating frequency

Droplet spraying is utilized in diverse industrial processes and biomedical applications, including nanomaterial synthesis, biomaterial handling, and inhalation drug delivery. Ultrasonic droplet generators transfer energy into bulk liquids using acoustic waves to disrupt the free liquid surface into fine microdroplets. We previously established a method combining ultrasonic actuation, resonant operation, and acoustic wave focusing for efficient spraying of various liquids (e.g., low surface tension fuels, high viscosity inks, and suspensions of biological cells). The microfabricated device comprises a piezoelectric transducer, sample reservoir, and an array of acoustic horn structures terminated by microscale orifices. Orifice size roughly dictates droplet diameter, and a fixed reservoir height prescribes specific device resonant frequencies of operation. Here, we incorporate a continuously variable liquid reservoir height for dynamic adjustment of operating parameters to improve spray efficiency in real-time and potentially tune the droplet size. Computational modeling predicts the system harmonic response for a range of reservoir heights from 0.5 to 3 mm (corresponding to operating frequencies from ∼500 kHz to 2.5 MHz). Nozzle arrays with 10, 20, and 40 μm orifices are evaluated for spray uniformity and stability of the active nozzles, using model predictions to explain the experimental observations.

Solid-State Precursor Impregnation for Enhanced Capacitance in Hierarchical Flexible Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene) Supercapacitors

Increasing capacitance and energy density is a major challenge in developing supercapacitors for flexible portable electronics. A thick electrode with a high mass loading of active electronic material leads to high areal capacitance; however, the higher the loading, the higher the mechanical stiffness and ion diffusion resistance, thereby hampering development of flexible supercapacitors. Here, we show a chemical strategy that leads to a hierarchical electrode structure producing devices with both an exceedingly high areal capacitance and superior flexibility. We utilize α-Fe₂O₃ particles as an oxidant precursor for controlling oxidative radical polymerization of the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) from the vapor phase. Our approach impregnates carbon cloth with α-Fe₂O₃ particles prior to monomer vapor exposure, resulting in state-of-the-art flexible nanofibrillar PEDOT supercapacitors possessing high areal capacitance (2243 mF/cm² for two-electrode vs 6210 mF/cm² for three-electrode) and high areal energy density (412 μWh/cm²).

Electropolymerization in a confined nanospace: synthesis of PEDOT nanoparticles in emulsion droplet reactors

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is an important material widely used in electronics for its hole conducting property. A novel strategy for the synthesis of nanoparticulate PEDOT was developed by emulsion droplet electrochemistry. Taking advantage of the space confinement in emulsions, PEDOT nanoparticles were size controllable without use of a separate template. Potential applications were investigated by implementing the PEDOT nanoparticle decorated electrodes as a supercapacitor and a hole transport layer in an organic light emitting diode.
