Tailoring Coral-Like Fe7Se8@C for Superior Low-Temperature Li/Na-Ion Half/Full Batteries: Synthesis, Structure, and DFT Studies

Superior sodiophilicity and molecule crowding of crown ether boost the electrochemical performance of all-climate sodium-ion batteries

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) as one of the promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries have achieved remarkable progress in the past. However, the all-climate performance is still very challenging for SIBs. Herein, 15-Crown-5 (15-C-5) is screened as an electrolyte additive from a number of ether molecules theoretically. The good sodiophilicity, high molecule rigidity, and bulky size enable it to reshape the solvation sheath and promote the anion engagement in the solvated structures by molecule crowding. This change also enhances Na-ion transfer, inhibits side reactions, and leads to a thin and robust solid-electrolyte interphase. Furthermore, the electrochemical stability and operating temperature windows of the electrolyte are extended. These profits improve the electrochemical performance of SIBs in all climates, much better than the case without 15-C-5. This improvement is also adopted to μ-Sn, μ-Bi, hard carbon, and MoS2. This work opens a door to prioritize the potential molecules in theory for advanced electrolytes.

Challenges and Breakthroughs in Enhancing Temperature Tolerance of Sodium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-based batteries (LBBs) have been highly researched and recognized as a mature electrochemical energy storage (EES) system in recent years. However, their stability and effectiveness are primarily confined to room temperature conditions. At temperatures significantly below 0 °C or above 60 °C, LBBs experience substantial performance degradation. Under such challenging extreme contexts, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) emerge as a promising complementary technology, distinguished by their fast dynamics at low-temperature regions and superior safety under elevated temperatures. Notably, developing SIBs suitable for wide-temperature usage still presents significant challenges, particularly for specific applications such as electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and deep-space/polar explorations, which requires a thorough understanding of how SIBs perform under different temperature conditions. By reviewing the development of wide-temperature SIBs, the influence of temperature on the parameters related to battery performance, such as reaction constant, charge transfer resistance, etc., is systematically and comprehensively analyzed. The review emphasizes challenges encountered by SIBs in both low and high temperatures while exploring recent advancements in SIB materials, specifically focusing on strategies to enhance battery performance across diverse temperature ranges. Overall, insights gained from these studies will drive the development of SIBs that can handle the challenges posed by diverse and harsh climates.

Structural Engineering of Anode Materials for Low-Temperature Lithium-Ion Batteries: Mechanisms, Strategies, and Prospects

The severe degradation of electrochemical performance for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) at low temperatures poses a significant challenge to their practical applications. Consequently, extensive efforts have been contributed to explore novel anode materials with high electronic conductivity and rapid Li+ diffusion kinetics for achieving favorable low-temperature performance of LIBs. Herein, we try to review the recent reports on the synthesis and characterizations of low-temperature anode materials. First, we summarize the underlying mechanisms responsible for the performance degradation of anode materials at subzero temperatures. Second, detailed discussions concerning the key pathways (boosting electronic conductivity, enhancing Li+ diffusion kinetics, and inhibiting lithium dendrite) for improving the low-temperature performance of anode materials are presented. Third, several commonly used low-temperature anode materials are briefly introduced. Fourth, recent progress in the engineering of these low-temperature anode materials is summarized in terms of structural design, morphology control, surface & interface modifications, and multiphase materials. Finally, the challenges that remain to be solved in the field of low-temperature anode materials are discussed. This review was organized to offer valuable insights and guidance for next-generation LIBs with excellent low-temperature electrochemical performance.

Vanadium fluorophosphates: advanced cathode materials for next-generation secondary batteries

Next-generation secondary batteries including sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are considered the most promising candidates for application to large-scale energy storage systems due to their abundant, evenly distributed and cost-effective sodium/potassium raw materials. The electrochemical performance of SIBs (PIBs) significantly depends on the inherent characteristics of the cathode material. Among the wide variety of cathode materials, sodium/potassium vanadium fluorophosphate (denoted as MVPF, M = Na and K) composites are widely investigated due to their fast ion transportation and robust structure. However, their poor electron conductivity leads to low specific capacity and poor rate capacity, limiting the further application of MVPF cathodes in large-scale energy storage. Accordingly, several modification strategies have been proposed to improve the performance of MVPF such as conductive coating, morphological regulation, and heteroatomic doping, which boost the electronic conductivity of these cathodes and enhance Na (K) ion transportation. Furthermore, the development and application of MVPF cathodes in SIBs at low temperatures are also outlined. Finally, we present a brief summary of the remaining challenges and corresponding strategies for the future development of MVPF cathodes.

Recent Progress and Perspective: Na Ion Batteries Used at Low Temperatures

With the rapid development of electric power, lithium materials, as a rare metal material, will be used up in 50 years. Sodium, in the same main group as lithium in the periodic table, is abundant in earth's surface. However, in the study of sodium-ion batteries, there are still problems with their low-temperature performance. Its influencing factors mainly include three parts: cathode material, anode material, and electrolyte. In the cathode, there are Prussian blue and Prussian blue analogues, layered oxides, and polyanionic-type cathodes in four parts, as this paper discusses. However, in the anode, there is hard carbon, amorphous selenium, metal selenides, and the NaTi₂(PO₄)₃ anode. Then, we divide the electrolyte into four parts: organic electrolytes; ionic liquid electrolytes; aqueous electrolytes; and solid-state electrolytes. Here, we aim to find electrode materials with a high specific capacity of charge and discharge at lower temperatures. Meanwhile, high-electrical-potential cathode materials and low-potential anode materials are also found. Furthermore, their stability in air and performance degradation in full cells and half-cells are analyzed. As for the electrolyte, despite the aspects mentioned above, its electrical conductivity in low temperatures is also reported.

In-situ fabrication of active interfaces towards FeSe as advanced performance anode for sodium-ion batteries

Transition metal selenides have gained enormous interest as anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Nonetheless, their large volume expansion causing poor rate and inferior cycle stability during Na⁺ insertion/extraction process hinders their further applications in SIBs. Herein, a confined-regulated interfacial engineering strategy towards the synthesis of FeSe microparticles coated by ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) is demonstrated (FeSe@NC). The strong interfacial interaction between FeSeand NC endows FeSe@NC with fast electron/Na⁺ transport kinetics and outstanding structural stability, delivering unexceptionable rate capability (364 mAh/gat 10 A/g) and preeminent cycling durability (capacity retention of 100 % at 1 A/g over 1000 cycles). Furthermore, variousex situcharacterization techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been applied to demonstrate the Na⁺ storage mechanism of FeSe@NC. The assembled Na₃V₂(PO₄)₂F₃@rGO//FeSe@NC full cell also displays a high capacity of 241 mAh/gat 1 A/g with the capacity retention of nearly 100 % over 2000 cycles, and delivers a supreme energy density of 135 Wh kg^-1 and a topmost power density of 495 W kg^-1, manifesting the latent applications of FeSe@NC in the fast charging SIBs.

Innovative Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion

The metal chalcogenides (MCs) for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have gained increasing attention owing to their low cost and high theoretical capacity. However, the poor electrochemical stability and slow kinetic behaviors hinder its practical application as anodes for SIBs. Hence, various strategies have been used to solve the above problems, such as dimensions reduction, composition formation, doping functionalization, morphology control, coating encapsulation, electrolyte modification, etc. In this work, the recent progress of MCs as electrodes for SIBs has been comprehensively reviewed. Moreover, the summarization of metal chalcogenides contains the synthesis methods, modification strategies and corresponding basic reaction mechanisms of MCs with layered and non-layered structures. Finally, the challenges, potential solutions and future prospects of metal chalcogenides as SIBs anode materials are also proposed.

Two-Dimensional Room-Temperature Magnetic Nonstoichiometric Fe7Se8 Nanocrystals: Controllable Synthesis and Magnetic Behavior

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials have attracted significant attention for promising applications in energy-saving logic and robust memory devices. However, most 2D magnets discovered so far typically feature drawbacks for practical applications due to low critical temperatures. Herein, we synthesize ultrathin room-temperature (RT) magnetic Fe₇Se₈ nanoflakes via the space-confined chemical vapor deposition method. It is found that the appropriate supply and control of Se concentration in the reaction chamber is crucial for synthesizing high-quality nonstoichiometric Fe₇Se₈ nanoflakes. Cryogenic electrical and magnetic characterizations reveal the emergence of spin reorientation at ∼130 K and the survival of long-range magnetic ordering up to room temperature. The RT magnetic domain structures with different thicknesses are also uncovered by magnetic force microscopy. Moreover, theoretical calculations confirm the spin configuration and metallic band structure. The outstanding characteristics exhibited by Fe₇Se₈ nanoflakes, including RT magnetism, spin reorientation property, and good electrical conductivity, make them a potential candidate for RT spintronics.

Scalable One-Pot Synthesis of Hierarchical Bi@C Bulk with Superior Lithium-Ion Storage Performances

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the most successful commercial energy storage devices, are now widespread in our daily life. However, the lack of appropriate electrode materials with long lifespan and superior rate capability is the urgent bottleneck for the development of high-performance LIBs. Herein, a hierarchical Bi@C bulk is developed via a scalable pyrolysis method. Due to the ultrafine size of Bi nanoparticles and in situ generated porous carbon framework, this Bi@C anode evidently facilitates the diffusion of Li⁺/electron, availably inhibits the agglomeration of active nano-Bi, and effectively mitigates the volume fluctuation. This hierarchical Bi@C bulk exhibits stable cycling performance for both LIBs (256 mAh g^-1 at 1.0 A g^-1 over 1400 cycles) and potassium-ion batteries (271 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1 for 200 cycles). More importantly, when coupled with a commercial LiCoO₂ cathode, the assembled LiCoO₂//Bi@C cells provide an output voltage of 2.9 V and retain a capacity of 202 mAh g^-1 at 0.15 A g^-1. Moreover, kinetic analysis and in situ X-ray diffraction characterization reveal that the Bi@C anode displays a dominated pseudocapacitance behavior and a typical alloying storage mechanism during the cycling process.
