Plasmon-Enhanced Oxidase-Like Activity and Cellular Effect of Pd-Coated Gold Nanorods

Chiral Au-Pd Alloy Nanorods with Tunable Optical Chirality and Catalytically Active Surfaces

Integrating the plasmonic chirality with excellent catalytic activities in plasmonic hybrid nanostructures provides a promising strategy to realize the chiral nanocatalysis toward many chemical reactions. However, the controllable synthesis of catalytically active chiral plasmonic nanoparticles with tailored geometries and compositions remains a significant challenge. Here it is demonstrated that chiral Au-Pd alloy nanorods with tunable optical chirality and catalytically active surfaces can be achieved by a seed-mediated coreduction growth method. Through manipulating the chiral inducers, Au nanorods selectively transform into two different intrinsically chiral Au-Pd alloy nanorods with distinct geometric chirality and tunable optical chirality. By further adjusting several key synthetic parameters, the optical chirality, composition, and geometry of the chiral Au-Pd nanorods are fine-tailored. More importantly, the chiral Au-Pd alloy nanorods exhibit appealing chiral catalytic activities as well as polarization-dependent plasmon-enhanced nanozyme catalytic activity, which has great potential for chiral nanocatalysis and plasmon-induced chiral photochemistry.

Single-atom nanozymes shines diagnostics of gastrointestinal diseases

Various clinical symptoms of digestive system, such as infectious, inflammatory, and malignant disorders, have a profound impact on the quality of life and overall health of patients. Therefore, the chase for more potent medicines is both highly significant and urgent. Nanozymes, a novel class of nanomaterials, amalgamate the biological properties of nanomaterials with the catalytic activity of enzymes, and have been engineered for various biomedical applications, including complex gastrointestinal diseases (GI). Particularly, because of their distinctive metal coordination structure and ability to maximize atom use efficiency, single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) with atomically scattered metal centers are becoming a more viable substitute for natural enzymes. Traditional nanozyme design strategies are no longer able to meet the current requirements for efficient and diverse SAzymes design due to the diversification and complexity of preparation processes. As a result, this review emphasizes the design concept and the synthesis strategy of SAzymes, and corresponding bioenzyme-like activities, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), oxidase (OXD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Then the various application of SAzymes in GI illnesses are summarized, which should encourage further research into nanozymes to achieve better application characteristics.

Activation of Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway exacerbates cholestatic liver injury

Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor-2 (Nrf2) antioxidant signaling is involved in liver protection, but this generalization overlooks conflicting studies indicating that Nrf2 effects are not necessarily hepatoprotective. The role of Nrf2/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in cholestatic liver injury (CLI) remains poorly defined. Here, we report that Nrf2/HO-1 activation exacerbates liver injury rather than exerting a protective effect in CLI. Inhibiting HO-1 or ameliorating bilirubin transport alleviates liver injury in CLI models. Nrf2 knockout confers hepatoprotection in CLI mice, whereas in non-CLI mice, Nrf2 knockout aggravates liver damage. In the CLI setting, oxidative stress activates Nrf2/HO-1, leads to bilirubin accumulation, and impairs mitochondrial function. High levels of bilirubin reciprocally upregulate the activation of Nrf2 and HO-1, while antioxidant and mitochondrial-targeted SOD2 overexpression attenuate bilirubin toxicity. The expression of Nrf2 and HO-1 is elevated in serum of patients with CLI. These results reveal an unrecognized function of Nrf2 signaling in exacerbating liver injury in cholestatic disease.

Ultrasmall metal alloy nanozymes mimicking neutrophil enzymatic cascades for tumor catalytic therapy

Developing strategies that emulate the killing mechanism of neutrophils, which involves the enzymatic cascade of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and myeloperoxidase (MPO), shows potential as a viable approach for cancer therapy. Nonetheless, utilizing natural enzymes as therapeutics is hindered by various challenges. While nanozymes have emerged for cancer treatment, developing SOD-MPO cascade in one nanozyme remains a challenge. Here, we develop nanozymes possessing both SOD- and MPO-like activities through alloying Au and Pd, which exhibits the highest cascade activity when the ratio of Au and Pd is 1:3, attributing to the high d-band center and adsorption energy for superoxide anions, as determined through theoretical calculations. The Au1Pd3 alloy nanozymes exhibit excellent tumor therapeutic performance and safety in female tumor-bearing mice, with safety attributed to their tumor-specific killing ability and renal clearance ability caused by ultrasmall size. Together, this work develops ultrasmall AuPd alloy nanozymes that mimic neutrophil enzymatic cascades for catalytic treatment of tumors.

Deciphering the Mechanisms of Photo-Enhanced Catalytic Activities in Plasmonic Pd-Au Heteromeric Nanozymes for Colorimetric Analysis

The growing demand for highly active nanozymes in various fields has led to the development of several strategies to enhance their activity. Plasmonic enhancement, a strategy used in heterogenous catalysis, represents a promising strategy to boost the activity of nanozymes. Herein, Pd-Au heteromeric nanoparticles (Pd-Au dimers) with well-defined heterointerfaces have been explored as plasmonic nanozymes. As a model system, the Pd-Au dimers with integrated peroxidase (POD)-like activity and plasmonic activity are used to investigate the effect of plasmons on enhancing the activity of nanozymes under visible light irradiation. Mechanistic studies revealed that the generation of hot electron-hole pairs plays a dominant role in plasmonic effect, and it greatly enhances the decomposition of H2 O2 to the reactive oxygen species (ROS) intermediates (•OH, •O2 - and 1 O2 ), leading to elevated POD-like activity of the Pd-Au dimers. Finally, the Pd-Au dimers are applied in the plasmon-enhanced colorimetric method for the detection of alkaline phosphatase, exhibiting broad linear range and low detection limit. This study not only provides a straightforward approach for regulating nanozyme activity through plasmonic heterostructures but also sheds light on the mechanism of plasmon-enhanced catalysis of nanozymes.

Elucidating Surface Plasmon Damping and Fano Resonance Induced by Epitaxial Growth of Palladium on Single Gold Nanorods

Plasmon damping and Fano resonance induced in the growth of palladium (Pd) on gold nanorods (AuNRs) have been poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the optical properties and morphologies of single AuNRs@Pd (core@shell) synthesized using epitaxial Pd growth at different Pd concentrations. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) spectra of single AuNRs@Pd showed characteristic subradiant and superradiant peaks as well as Fano resonance as a spectral dip, which was highly influenced by the Pd shell thickness. The occurrence of the Fano resonance during the Pd growth was further verified by in situ real-time observation experiments. We then elucidated time-dependent, real-time variations in LSPR peak wavelength, metal-induced surface damping, and Fano resonance mode of single AuNRs@Pd during Pd shell formation in three successive phases: Pd reduction, nucleation, and growth. Therefore, this study provides new insights into metal interface damping, the Fano resonance, and optical tunability by engineering the Fano resonance energy and Pd shell thickness.

Antioxidant and Prooxidant Nanozymes: From Cellular Redox Regulation to Next-Generation Therapeutics

Nanozymes, nanomaterials with enzyme-mimicking activity, have attracted tremendous interest in recent years owing to their ability to replace natural enzymes in various biomedical applications, such as biosensing, therapeutics, drug delivery, and bioimaging. In particular, the nanozymes capable of regulating the cellular redox status by mimicking the antioxidant enzymes in mammalian cells are of great therapeutic significance in oxidative-stress-mediated disorders. As the distinction of physiological oxidative stress (oxidative eustress) and pathological oxidative stress (oxidative distress) occurs at a fine borderline, it is a great challenge to design nanozymes that can differentially sense the two extremes in cells, tissues and organs and mediate appropriate redox chemical reactions. In this Review, we summarize the advances in the development of redox-active nanozymes and their biomedical applications. We primarily highlight the therapeutic significance of the antioxidant and prooxidant nanozymes in various disease model systems, such as cancer, neurodegeneration, and cardiovascular diseases. The future perspectives of this emerging area of research and the challenges associated with the biomedical applications of nanozymes are described.

Copper-Zinc Bimetallic Single-Atom Catalysts with Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance-Enhanced Photothermal Effect and Catalytic Activity for Melanoma Treatment and Wound-Healing

Nanomaterials with photothermal combined chemodynamic therapy (PTT-CDT) have attracted the attention of researchers owing to their excellent synergistic therapeutic effects on tumors. Thus, the preparation of multifunctional materials with higher photothermal conversion efficiency and catalytic activity can achieve better synergistic therapeutic effects for melanoma. In this study, a Cu-Zn bimetallic single-atom (Cu/PMCS) is constructed with augmented photothermal effect and catalytic activity due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. Density functional theory calculations confirmed that the enhanced photothermal effect of Cu/PMCS is due to the appearance of a new d-orbital transition with strong spin-orbit coupling and the induced LSPR. Additionally, Cu/PMCS exhibited increased catalytic activity in the Fenton-like reaction and glutathione depletion capacity, further enhanced by increased temperature and LSPR. Consequently, Cu/PMCS induced better synergistic anti-melanoma effects via PTT-CDT than PMCS in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, compared with PMCS, Cu/PMCS killed bacteria more quickly and effectively, thus facilitating wound healing owing to the enhanced photothermal effect and slow release of Cu2+ . Cu/PMCS promoted cell migration and angiogenesis and upregulated the expression of related genes to accelerate wound healing. Cu/PMCS has potential applications in treating melanoma and repairing wounds with its antitumor, antibacterial, and wound-healing properties.

Plasmonic Nanozymes: Leveraging Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance to Boost the Enzyme-Mimicking Activity of Nanomaterials

Nanozymes, a type of nanomaterials that function similarly to natural enzymes, receive extensive attention in biomedical fields. However, the widespread applications of nanozymes are greatly plagued by their unsatisfactory enzyme-mimicking activity. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), a nanoscale physical phenomenon described as the collective oscillation of surface free electrons in plasmonic nanoparticles under light irradiation, offers a robust universal paradigm to boost the catalytic performance of nanozymes. Plasmonic nanozymes (PNzymes) with elevated enzyme-mimicking activity by leveraging LSPR, emerge and provide unprecedented opportunities for biocatalysis. In this review, the physical mechanisms behind PNzymes are thoroughly revealed including near-field enhancement, hot carriers, and the photothermal effect. The rational design and applications of PNzymes in biosensing, cancer therapy, and bacterial infections elimination are systematically introduced. Current challenges and further perspectives of PNzymes are also summarized and discussed to stimulate their clinical translation. It is hoped that this review can attract more researchers to further advance the promising field of PNzymes and open up a new avenue for optimizing the enzyme-mimicking activity of nanozymes to create superior nanocatalysts for biomedical applications.

Enhanced Peroxidase-like Activity of CuS Hollow Nanocages by Plasmon-Induced Hot Carriers and Photothermal Effect for the Dual-Mode Detection of Tannic Acid

High catalytic activity is one of the necessary parameters for nanozymes to substitute for natural enzymes. It remains a great challenge to improve the specific enzyme-like activity of nanozymes as much as possible using the characteristics of nanomaterials for avoiding complexity and introducing additional uncertainties. Here, by combining the peroxidase (POD)-like activity and plasmon properties of CuS hollow nanocages (CuS HNCs), we demonstrate the feasibility of modulating the catalytic activity of nanozymes by the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. Rough surfaces and hollow-cage structures endow CuS HNCs with abundant hot spots to produce strong LSPR in the near-infrared (NIR) region, which makes the CuS HNCs simultaneously generate plentiful high-energy hot carriers and thermal effect to mediate H₂O₂ cleavage to yield the reactive oxide species (ROS) as well as speed up the reaction, leading to a dramatically enhanced POD-like activity. Based on the light-enhanced catalytic activity and high photothermal efficiency of the reaction system, a dual-mode strategy for detecting tannic acid (TA) is developed and successfully applied to determine the content of TA in different kinds of teas. This work not only provides a novel path for tuning the specific enzyme-like activity of nanomaterials but also shows a perspective for dual-mode sensing based on a photoinduced plasmon-enhanced effect.

Emerging nanozyme-based multimodal synergistic therapies in combating bacterial infections

Pathogenic infections have emerged as major threats to global public health. Multidrug resistance induced by the abuse of antibiotics makes the anti-infection therapies to be a global challenge. Thus, it is urgent to develop novel, efficient and biosafe antibiotic alternatives for future antibacterial therapy. Recently, nanozymes have emerged as promising antibiotic alternatives for combating bacterial infections. More significantly, the multimodal synergistic nanozyme-based antibacterial systems open novel disinfection pathways. In this review, we are mainly focusing on the recent research progress of nanozyme-based multimodal synergistic therapies to eliminate bacterial infections. Their antibacterial mechanism, the synergistic antibacterial systems are systematically summarized and discussed according to the combination of mechanisms and the purpose to improve their antibacterial efficiency, biosafety and specificity. Finanly, the current challenges and prospects of the multimodal synergistic antibacterial systems are proposed.

A nanomedicine enables synergistic chemo/photodynamic therapy for pancreatic cancer treatment

Pancreatic cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Gemcitabine (Gem) has been a key chemotherapy agent for pancreatic cancer treatment by suppressing cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis. However, the overexpression of inhibitors of apoptosis (IAP) family of proteins during the carcinogenesis of pancreatic cancer can develop resistance to chemotherapy treatment and result in poor efficacy. To achieve the synergistic combinations of multiple strategies for this dismal disease, we developed a robust nanomedicine system, consisting of a photodynamic therapeutic agent (chlorine e6, Ce6) and a pro-apoptotic peptide-Gem conjugate. To have spatiotemporally controlled drug release, the pro-apoptotic peptide-Gem conjugate was designed to have a vinyldithioether linker that was sensitive to reactive oxygen species (ROS). The nanomedicine was fabricated by the direct self-assembly of the pro-apoptotic peptide-Gem conjugate with Ce6. After being delivered into tumors, the nanomedicine disassembled and rapidly released Gem, Ce6, and the pro-apoptotic peptide upon light illumination (660 nm). Both in vitro and in vivo studies in pancreatic cancer models confirmed the tumor inhibition efficacy with low systemic toxicity to animals.

Gold Nanorods/Metal-Organic Framework Hybrids: Photo-Enhanced Peroxidase-Like Activity and SERS Performance for Organic Dyestuff Degradation and Detection

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely used to mimic enzymes for catalyzing chemical reactions; however, low enzyme activity limit their large-scale application. In this work, gold nanorods/metal-organic frameworks (Au NRs/Fe-MOF) hybrids were successfully synthesized for photo-enhanced peroxidase-like catalysis and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The enzyme-like activity of Au NRs/Fe-MOF hybrids was significantly enhanced under localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), because the hot electrons produced on Au NRs surface were transferred into Fe-MOF, activating the Fenton reaction by Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ conversion and preventing the recombination of hot electrons and holes. This photo-enhanced enzyme-like catalytic performance was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), electrochemical analysis, activation energy measurement, and in situ Raman spectroscopy. Afterward, Methylene Blue (MB) was chosen to demonstrate the photo-enhanced peroxidase-like performance of Au NRs/Fe-MOFs. The Au NRs/Fe-MOF caused chemical and electromagnetic enhancement of Raman signals and exhibited a great potential for the detection of toxic chemicals and biological molecules. The detection limit of MB concentration is 9.3 × 10^-12 M. In addition, the Au NRs/Fe-MOF hybrids also showed excellent stability and reproducibility for photo-enhanced peroxidase-like catalysis. These results show that nanohybrids have great potential in many fields, such as sensing, cancer therapy, and energy harvesting.

Multitarget Reaction Programmable Automatic Diagnosis and Treatment Logic Device

Accurate diagnosis and precise and effective treatment are currently the two magic weapons for dealing with cancer. However, a single marker is often associated with multiple cellular events, which is not conducive to accurate diagnosis, and overly mild treatment methods often make the treatment effect unsatisfactory. In this paper, we construct a Au/Pd octopus nanoparticle-DNA nanomachine (Au/Pd ONP-DNA nanomachine) as a fully automatic diagnosis and treatment logic system. In this system, multiple DNA components are targeting detection units, Au/Pd ONPs act as carriers, and Au/Pd ONPs with an 808 nm laser is the treatment unit. In order to achieve the purpose of precise treatment, we will detect two secondary markers under the premise of detecting one major tumor marker. When all of the designated targets are detected (the logic system input is (1, 1, 1), and the output is (1, 1)), the 808 nm laser can be programmed to automatically radiate tumors and perform photothermal therapy and photodynamic therapy. In vivo and in vitro experiments show that this logic system not only can accurately identify tumor cells but also has considerable therapeutic effects.

Transferrin guided quasi-nanocuboid as tetra-enzymic mimics and biosensing applications

Given the promising prospect of nanozymes system with multi-enzyme mimetic activities, it is also a challenge for designing a controllable nanostructure as multi-enzymes mimics by protein-guided strategy. Here, transferrin (Trf)-directed manganese oxide with 3D nanomorphology was developed. Trf-Mn₃O₄ quasi-nanocuboids (NCs) was obtained by improved conditions for biomineralization, which employing Trf as biotemplate and Mn²⁺ as metal source in alkaline solution. Fortunately, not only was the controllable structure discovered, but Trf-Mn₃O₄ NCs also showed tetra-enzyme mimic activities involving peroxidase-, ascorbic acid oxidase-, catalase- and superoxide dismutase-mimic activities. Further, the catalytic properties and steady-state kinetic of Trf-Mn₃O₄ NCs was explored, systematically. Moreover, we develop simple colorimetric sensor based on the peroxidase-mimic activity of Trf-Mn₃O₄ NCs for the detection of gallic acid (GA) with the linear range within 0.1-40 μΜ, and the limit of detection was 41.2 nM (S/N = 3). Besides, a novel fluorimetric sensor for the detection of AA based on the ascorbic acid oxidase-mimic activity was proposed with the linear range of 0.5 μM-10 μM (R² = 0.9906) and 10 μM-5 mM (R² = 0.9927), and LOD of 0.24 μM (S/N = 3) was obtained. Both the proposed sensors showed outstanding detection performance, accuracy and repeatability, which realized the detection of GA and AA in real sample, respectively. The as-synthesized tetra-enzymic mimics not only enriched the species of nanozymes, particularly for the nanozymes with multi-enzyme mimic activities, the proposed sensors showed promising potential applications for biosensor in complex samples.

Delineating the Role of Tailored Gold Nanostructures at the Biointerface

Gold (Au) has emerged as a superior element, because of its widespread applications in electronic and medical fields. The desirable physical, chemical, optical, and inherent enzyme-like properties of Au are efficiently exploited for detection, diagnostic, and therapeutic purposes. Au offers a unique advantage of fabricating gold nanostructures (GNS) having exact physical, chemical, optical, and enzyme-like properties required for the specific biomedical application. In this Review, the emerging trend of GNS for various biomedical applications is highlighted. Some notable structural and chemical modifications achieved for the detection of biomolecules, pathogens, diagnosis of diseases, and therapeutic applications are discussed in brief. The limitations of GNS during biomedical usage are highlighted and the way forward to overcome these limitations are discussed.

Chemical design of nanozymes for biomedical applications

With the advancement of nanochemistry, artificial nanozymes with high catalytic stability, low manufacturing and storage cost, and greater design flexibility over natural enzymes, have emerged as a next-generation nanomedicine. The catalytic activity and selectivity of nanozymes can be readily controlled and optimized by the rational chemical design of nanomaterials. This review summarizes the various chemical approaches to regulate the catalytic activity and selectivity of nanozymes for biomedical applications. We focus on the in-depth correlation between the physicochemical characteristics and catalytic activities of nanozymes from several aspects, including regulating chemical composition, controlling morphology, altering the size, surface modification and self-assembly. Furthermore, the chemically designed nanozymes for various biomedical applications such as biosensing, infectious disease therapy, cancer therapy, neurodegenerative disease therapy and injury therapy, are briefly summarized. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives of nanozymes are discussed from a chemistry point of view. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: As a kind of nanomaterials that performs enzyme-like properties, nanozymes perform high catalytic stability, low manufacturing and storage cost, attracting the attention of researchers from various fields. Notably, chemically designed nanozymes with robust catalytic activity, tunable specificity and multi-functionalities are promising for biomedical applications. It's crucial to define the correlation between the physicochemical characteristics and catalytic activities of nanozymes. To help readers understand this rapidly expanding field, in this review, we summarize various chemical approaches that regulate the catalytic activity and selectivity of nanozymes together with the discussion of related mechanisms, followed by the introduction of diverse biomedical applications using these chemically well-designed nanozymes. Hopefully our review will bridge the chemical design and biomedical applications of nanozymes, supporting the extensive research on high-performance nanozymes.

Photo-enhanced enzyme-like activities of BiOBr/PtRu hybrid nanostructures

The combination of semiconductor and metal nanocomponents represents an effective way for design of photocatalysts with high efficiency. It is expected that this strategy can be applied to design photo-regulated nanozymes. To prove this concept, BiOBr/PtRu hybrid nanostructures have been fabricated by depositing PtRu nanoparticles on BiOBr nanosheets through a templating co-reduction method. The formation of BiOBr/PtRu hybrid nanostructures was confirmed by TEM, XRD and XPS. BiOBr/PtRu hybrid nanostructures exhibited excellent enzyme-like activities (peroxidase, oxidase, ferroxidase) as well as the ability to scavenge DPPH free radicals. When exposed to light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), it was found that BiOBr/PtRu hybrid nanostructures not only exhibit improved photocatalytic degradation, but also exhibit enhanced peroxidase- and oxidase-like activity. Due to the photocatalytic effect and the higher charge separation and utilization efficiency caused by heterojunctions, a light-enhanced enzyme-like activity mechanism was proposed. These results will be of value to design high efficiency nanozymes using light for biological and environmental applications.

Porous manganese-cobalt oxide microspheres with tunable oxidase mimicking activity for sulfide ion colorimetric detection

Here, we report the controllable synthesis of porous MnxCo1-xO microspheres and tunable catalytic activity in the oxidase mimicking reaction. Mn0.6Co0.4O possesses the best oxidase mimicking activity and can be used successfully in sulfide ion colorimetric detection with a low detection limit of 0.1 μM.

Gold Nanorod-Based Nanoplatform Catalyzes Constant NO Generation and Protects from Cardiovascular Injury

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death, and one of the effective therapeutic strategies for cardiovascular disease is to provide a controlled, constant supply of nitric oxide (NO) in a mild manner; however, this has proved challenging in the clinic. To address this problem, we built a nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-like nanoplatform (NanoNOS) that consists of a noble metal nanoparticle core and a mesoporous silica shell and demonstrated the ability of NanoNOS to catalyze production of NO in vitro. Mechanistic studies show that the catalysis consists of a three-step reaction: the oxidation of NADPH to produce O₂^-via oxidase-like activity and the subsequent dismutation of O₂^- to H₂O₂via SOD-like activity, followed by H₂O₂-mediated oxidation of l-arginine to produce NO via a nonenzymatic pathway. The generation of NO is precisely regulated by both the content of the NanoNOS species and the plasmon excitation. We found that NanoNOS greatly suppressed injury-driven monocyte-endothelial cell adhesion, suggesting the NanoNOS treatment could help prevent cardiovascular disease. With such a design as well as plasmon excitation that allows for controlled and constant catalytic activity, NanoNOS technology could have a variety of biomedical applications.

Hot Carriers and Photothermal Effects of Monolayer MoOx for Promoting Sulfite Oxidase Mimetic Activity

Local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-enhanced catalysis has brought a substantial amount of opportunities across various disciplines such as photocatalysis, photodetection, and photothermal therapeutics. Plasmon-induced photothermal and hot carriers effects have also been utilized to activate the enzyme-like reactions. Compared with natural enzymes, the relatively low catalytic performance of nanozymes severely hampered the potential applications in the field of biomedicine. For these issues mentioned above, herein, we demonstrate a highly efficient sulfite oxidase (SuO_x) mimetic performance of plasmonic monolayer MoO_x (ML-MoO_x) upon LSPR excitation. We also established that the considerable photothermal effect and the injection of hot carriers induced by LSPR are responsible for promoting the SuO_x activity of ML-MoO_x. The high transient local temperature on the surface of ML-MoO_x generated by the photothermal effect facilitates to impact the reaction velocity and feed the SuO_x-like activity, while the generation of hot carriers which are suggested as predominant effects catalyzes the oxidation of sulfite to sulfate through significantly decreasing the activation energy for the SuO_x-like reaction. These investigations present a contribution to the basic understanding of plasmon-enhanced enzyme-like reaction and provided an insight into the optimization of the SuO_x mimetic performance of nanomaterials.
