An Organic/Inorganic Nanocomposite of Cellulose Nanofibers and ZnO Nanorods for Highly Sensitive, Reliable, Wireless, and Wearable Multifunctional Sensor Applications

ZnO-rGO-based electrochemical biosensor for the detection of organophosphorus pesticides

The accurate determination of organophosphorus pesticide residues is of great importance for human disease monitoring and environmental safety. Numerous detection methods exist, among which sensitive monitoring of organophosphorus compounds using electrochemical sensors has gradually become a research hotspot. This paper used acetylcholinesterase (AChE) as an indicator anchored on a zinc oxide-reduced graphene oxide (ZnO-rGO) composite rich in active sites, in which green non-toxic zinc oxide (ZnO) nanomaterials were uniformly distributed on the reduced graphene for rapid detection of organophosphorus. The effects of different ratios of ZnO to reduced graphene on the performance of ZnO-rGO nanocomposites were investigated. The AChE/ZnO-rGO biosensor detects organophosphorus by electrochemical inhibition of acetylcholinesterase in the presence of organophosphorus. The developed electrochemical biosensor has high selectivity and good linearity, and the ZnO-rGO nanocomposite as a matrix for immobilization of acetylcholinesterase and detection of organophosphorus has the potential for highly sensitive pesticide detection.

Exploring the potential of cellulose autofluorescence for optical detection of tannin in red wines

The growing demand for opto-electronic devices within an automated landscape has opened up new opportunities for harnessing sustainable cellulose materials for sensors technology. Cellulose, a versatile material, enables its combination with other materials, but in most of these applications, cellulose is typically employed as support or substrate, while its inherent autofluorescence remains largely underexplored for sensors. In light of this context, this study delves into the autofluorescence characteristics of pristine cellulose nanocrystals extracted from wood via enzymatic route for optical sensors tailored to detect tannins. By fine-tuning the experimental setup, photoluminescence (PL) emission bands were scrutinized across three distinct spectral regions, namely 300-400 nm, 400-500 nm and 550-700 nm. The proposed mechanism reveals the occurrence of dynamic fluorescence quenching, which enabled the selective monitoring of tannins in red wines across a dynamic range spanning from 10 to 1060 μg mL-1. This sensing platform provided a limit of detection (LoD) of 6.1 μg mL-1. Notably, the sensing platform's efficacy was validated with remarkable recovery rates of 99.7 % and 95.3 % when subjected to testing with cabernet sauvignon and tannat wines. These findings emphasize the sensing platform's potential for monitoring tannic acids in beverages and food products.

Folic acid conjugated palygorskite/Au hybrid microgels: Temperature, pH and light triple-responsive and its application in drug delivery

Herein, folic acid conjugated poly (NIPAM-co-functional palygorskite-Au-co-acrylic acid) (FA-PNFA) hybrid microgels were fabricated by emulsion polymerization. The introduction of acrylic acid can increase the low critical solution temperature (LCST) of FA-PNFA from 36 °C at pH 5.5-42 °C at pH 7.4. Doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) was chosen as the load drug, the results show that the DOX release behavior is driven by temperature, pH and light. Cumulative drug release rate can reach 74 % at 37 °C and pH 5.5 while only 20 % at 37 °C and pH 7.4, which effectively avoided the early leakage of the drug. In addition, by exposing FA-PNFA hybrid microgels to laser irradiation, the cumulative release rate was increased by 5 % compared to the release rate under dark conditions. Functional palygorskite-Au as physical crosslinkers not only improves the drug loading content of microgels but also promotes the release of DOX through light drive. Methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay demonstrated that the FA-PNFA are nontoxic up to 200 μg mL-1 towards 4T1 breast cancer cell. Meanwhile, DOX-loaded FA-PNFA show more significant cytotoxicity than the free DOX. Confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) revealed that the DOX-loaded FA-PNFA could be efficiently taken by 4T1 breast cancer cells. FA-PNFA hybrid microgels not only improve the LCST of PNIPAM, but also endow the microgels with photostimulation responsiveness, which can release drugs in response to the triple stimulation response of temperature, pH and light, thus effectively reducing the activity of cancer cells, making them more promising for wider medical applications.

Rational Design of Cellulosic Triboelectric Materials for Self-Powered Wearable Electronics

With the rapid development of the Internet of Things and flexible electronic technologies, there is a growing demand for wireless, sustainable, multifunctional, and independently operating self-powered wearable devices. Nevertheless, structural flexibility, long operating time, and wearing comfort have become key requirements for the widespread adoption of wearable electronics. Triboelectric nanogenerators as a distributed energy harvesting technology have great potential for application development in wearable sensing. Compared with rigid electronics, cellulosic self-powered wearable electronics have significant advantages in terms of flexibility, breathability, and functionality. In this paper, the research progress of advanced cellulosic triboelectric materials for self-powered wearable electronics is reviewed. The interfacial characteristics of cellulose are introduced from the top-down, bottom-up, and interfacial characteristics of the composite material preparation process. Meanwhile, the modulation strategies of triboelectric properties of cellulosic triboelectric materials are presented. Furthermore, the design strategies of triboelectric materials such as surface functionalization, interfacial structure design, and vacuum-assisted self-assembly are systematically discussed. In particular, cellulosic self-powered wearable electronics in the fields of human energy harvesting, tactile sensing, health monitoring, human-machine interaction, and intelligent fire warning are outlined in detail. Finally, the current challenges and future development directions of cellulosic triboelectric materials for self-powered wearable electronics are discussed.

ZnO microrods sandwiched between layered CNF matrix: Fabrication, stress transfer, and mechanical properties

Functional metal oxide particles are often added to the polymers to prepare flexible functional polymer composites with adequate mechanical properties. ZnO and cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) outstand among these metal oxides and the polymer matrices respectively due to their various advantages. Herein, we in situ prepare ZnO microrods in the presence of CNF, which resultes in a layered composite structure. The ZnO microrods are sandwiched between the CNF layers and strongly bind to highly charged CNF, which provides a better stress transfer during mechanical activity. Digital image correction (DIC) and finite element analysis-based computational homogenization methods are used to investigate the relationship between mechanical properties and composite structure, and the stress transfer to the ZnO microrods. Full-field strain measurements in DIC reveal that the in situ ZnO microrods preparation leads to their homogenous distribution in the CNF matrix unlike other methods, which require external means such as ultrasonication. The computational homogenization technique provides a fairly good insight into the stress transfer between constituents in microstructure as well as a good prediction of macroscopic mechanical properties, which otherwise, would be challenging to be assessed by any ordinary mechanical testing in the layered composites. Finally, we also demonstrate that these composites could be used as physiological motion sensors for human health monitoring.

Novel green flexible rice straw nanofibers/zinc oxide nanoparticles films with electrical properties

In the current work, rice straw nanofibers (RSNF) with the width of elementary fibrils (~ 4-5 nm) were isolated from rice straw. The isolated nanofibers were used with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) to prepare flexible nanopaper films. Tensile strength and electrical properties of the prepared RSNF/ZnONPs nanopaper were investigated. The addition of ZnONPs to RSNF nanopaper did not deteriorate its mechanical properties and showed a slight improvement in tensile strength and Young's modulus of about 14% and 10%, respectively, upon the addition of 5% of ZnONPs. Microscopy investigation using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed the inclusion of the ZnONPs within the RSNF. Electrical conductivity and dielectric properties as a function of frequency at different temperatures were studied. The ac-electrical conductivity increased with frequency and fitted with the power law equation. The dc- electrical conductivity of the samples verified the Arrhenius equation and the activation energies varied in the range from 0.9 to 0.42 eV. The dielectric constant decreased with increasing frequency and increased with increasing temperature, probably due to the free movement of dipole molecular chains within the RSNF nanopaper. The high values of the dielectric constant and conductivity of the prepared nanopaper films support their use in electronic components.

Nanocellulose as a promising substrate for advanced sensors and their applications

Nanocellulose has broad and promising applications owing to its low density, large specific surface area, high mechanical strength, modifiability, renewability. Recently, nanocellulose has been widely used to fabricate flexible, durable and environmental-friendly sensor substrates. In this contribution, the construction and characteristics of nanocellulose-based sensors are comprehensively reviewed. Various nanocellulose-based sensors are summarized and divided into colorimetric, fluorescent, electronic, electrochemical and SERS types according to the sensing mechanism. This review also introduces the applications of nanocellulose-based sensors in the fields of biomedicine, environmental monitoring, food safety, and wearable devices.

A new versatile x-y-z electrospinning equipment for nanofiber synthesis in both far and near field

This work describes a versatile electrospinning equipment with rapid, independent, and precise x–y–z movements for large-area depositions of electrospun fibers, direct writing or assembly of fibers into sub-millimeter and micron-sized patterns, and printing of 3D micro- and nanostructures. Its versatility is demonstrated thought the preparation of multilayered functional nanofibers for wound healing, nanofiber mesh for particle filtration, high-aspect ratio printed lines, and freestanding aligned nanofibers.

Sensor-Embedded Face Masks for Detection of Volatiles in Breath: A Proof of Concept Study

The correlation between breath volatilome and health is prompting a growing interest in the development of sensors optimized for breath analysis. On the other hand, the outbreak of COVID-19 evidenced that breath is a vehicle of infection; thus, the introduction of low-cost and disposable devices is becoming urgent for a clinical implementation of breath analysis. In this paper, a proof of concept about the functionalization of face masks is provided. Porphyrin-based sensors are among the most performant devices for breath analysis, but since porphyrins are scarcely conductive, they make use of costly and bulky mass or optical transducers. To overcome this drawback, we introduce here a hybrid material made of conducting polymer and porphyrins. The resulting material can be easily deposited on the internal surface of standard FFP face masks producing resistive sensors that retain the chemical sensitivity of porphyrins implementing their combinatorial selectivity for the identification of volatile compounds and the classification of complex samples. The sensitivity of sensors has been tested with respect to a set of seven volatile compounds representative of diverse chemical families. Sensors react to all compounds but with a different sensitivity pattern. Functionalized face masks have been tested in a proof-of-concept test aimed at identifying changes of breath due to the ingestion of beverages (coffee and wine) and solid food (banana- and mint-flavored candies). Results indicate that sensors can detect volatile compounds against the background of normal breath VOCs, suggesting the possibility to embed sensors in face masks for extensive breath analysis

Recent Development of Multifunctional Sensors Based on Low-Dimensional Materials

With the demand for accurately recognizing human actions and environmental situations, multifunctional sensors are essential elements for smart applications in various emerging technologies, such as smart robots, human-machine interface, and wearable electronics. Low-dimensional materials provide fertile soil for multifunction-integrated devices. This review focuses on the multifunctional sensors for mechanical stimulus and environmental information, such as strain, pressure, light, temperature, and gas, which are fabricated from low-dimensional materials. The material characteristics, device architecture, transmission mechanisms, and sensing functions are comprehensively and systematically introduced. Besides multiple sensing functions, the integrated potential ability of supplying energy and expressing and storing information are also demonstrated. Some new process technologies and emerging research areas are highlighted. It is presented that optimization of device structures, appropriate material selection for synergy effect, and application of piezotronics and piezo-phototronics are effective approaches for constructing and improving the performance of multifunctional sensors. Finally, the current challenges and direction of future development are proposed.

Polyaniline/Biopolymer Composite Systems for Humidity Sensor Applications: A Review

The development of polyaniline (PANI)/biomaterial composites as humidity sensor materials represents an emerging area of advanced materials with promising applications. The increasing attention to biopolymer materials as desiccants for humidity sensor components can be explained by their sustainability and propensity to absorb water. This review represents a literature survey, covering the last decade, which is focused on the interrelationship between the core properties and moisture responsiveness of multicomponent polymer/biomaterial composites. This contribution provides an overview of humidity-sensing materials and the corresponding sensors that emphasize the resistive (impedance) type of PANI devices. The key physicochemical properties that affect moisture sensitivity include the following: swelling, water vapor adsorption capacity, porosity, electrical conductivity, and enthalpies of adsorption and vaporization. Some key features of humidity-sensing materials involve the response time, recovery time, and hysteresis error. This work presents a discussion on various types of humidity-responsive composite materials that contain PANI and biopolymers, such as cellulose, chitosan and structurally related systems, along with a brief overview of carbonaceous and ceramic materials. The effect of additive components, such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), for film fabrication and their adsorption properties are also discussed. The mechanisms of hydration and proton transfer, as well as the relationship with conductivity is discussed. The literature survey on hydration reveals that the textural properties (surface area and pore structure) of a material, along with the hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) play a crucial role. The role of HLB is important in PANI/biopolymer materials for understanding hydration phenomena and hydrophobic effects. Fundamental aspects of hydration studies that are relevant to humidity sensor materials are reviewed. The experimental design of humidity sensor materials is described, and their relevant physicochemical characterization methods are covered, along with some perspectives on future directions in research on PANI-based humidity sensors.

Recent advance in the fabrication of carbon nanofiber-based composite materials for wearable devices

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) exhibit the advantages of high mechanical strength, good conductivity, easy production, and low cost, which have shown wide applications in the fields of materials science, nanotechnology, biomedicine, tissue engineering, sensors, wearable electronics, and other aspects. To promote the applications of CNF-based nanomaterials in wearable devices, the flexibility, electronic conductivity, thickness, weight, and bio-safety of CNF-based films/membranes are crucial. In this review, we present recent advances in the fabrication of CNF-based composite nanomaterials for flexible wearable devices. For this aim, firstly we introduce the synthesis and functionalization of CNFs, which promote the optimization of physical, chemical, and biological properties of CNFs. Then, the fabrication of two-dimensional and three-dimensional CNF-based materials are demonstrated. In addition, enhanced electric, mechanical, optical, magnetic, and biological properties of CNFs through the hybridization with other functional nanomaterials by synergistic effects are presented and discussed. Finally, wearable applications of CNF-based materials for flexible batteries, supercapacitors, strain/piezoresistive sensors, bio-signal detectors, and electromagnetic interference shielding devices are introduced and discussed in detail. We believe that this work will be beneficial for readers and researchers to understand both structural and functional tailoring of CNFs, and to design and fabricate novel CNF-based flexible and wearable devices for advanced applications.

White-rot fungus mediated green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles and their impregnation on cellulose to develop environmental friendly antimicrobial fibers

An economic, eco-friendly and efficient synthesis route for Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) using fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium has been explored along with the single-step impregnation of these nanoparticles on cellulose fibers. The transmission electron microscopy confirmed 50 nm as an average size of ZnO NPs and showed the presence of hexagonal phases. ZnO NPs-cellulose composite was fabricated by amending sugarcane bagasse-extracted cellulose in the reaction mixture during the nanoparticle synthesis. The composite was characterized using Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction patterns, Scanning electron microscopy, and Energy dispersive spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and also evaluated for its antimicrobial potential. The analyses revealed that well-dispersed hexagonal wurtzite ZnO NPs were present on the surface of the cellulose fibers. ZnO NPs-cellulose demonstrated antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger , Geotrichum candidum, and Phanerochaete chrysosporium. Thus, the study demonstrated an environmental friendly synthesis of ZnO NPs-cellulose composite using an economic and efficient method, which can be used for developing antimicrobial cellulosic fabric for numerous applications.

Environment-Friendly Zinc Oxide Nanorods-Grown Cellulose Nanofiber Nanocomposite and Its Electromechanical and UV Sensing Behaviors

This paper reports a genuine environment-friendly hybrid nanocomposite made by growing zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods on cellulose nanofiber (CNF) film. The nanocomposite preparation, characterizations, electromechanical property, and ultraviolet (UV) sensing performance are explained. CNF was extracted from the pulp by combining the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO) oxidation and the aqueous counter collision (ACC) methods. The CNF film was fabricated using doctor blade casting, and ZnO nanorods were grown on the CNF film by seeding and by a hydrothermal method. Morphologies, optical transparency, mechanical and electromechanical properties, and UV sensing properties were examined. The nanocomposite's optical transparency was more than 80%, and the piezoelectric charge constant d31 was 200 times larger than the CNF film. The UV sensing performance of the prepared ZnO-CNF nanocomposites was tested in terms of ZnO concentration, UV irradiance intensity, exposure side, and electrode materials. A large aspect ratio of ZnO nanorods and a work function gap between ZnO nanorods and the electrode material are essential for improving the UV sensing performance. However, these conditions should be compromised with transparency. The use of CNF for ZnO-cellulose hybrid nanocomposite is beneficial not only for electromechanical and UV sensing properties but also for high mechanical properties, renewability, biocompatibility, flexibility, non-toxicity, and transparency.
