Facile Fabrication of Semiconducting Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Patterns on Flexible Substrate Based on a Photoimmobilization Technique

High-Performance Semiconducting Carbon Nanotube Transistors Using Naphthalene Diimide-Based Polymers with Biaxially Extended Conjugated Side Chains

Polymer-wrapped single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are a potential method for obtaining high-purity semiconducting (sc) SWNT solutions. Conjugated polymers (CPs) can selectively sort sc-SWNTs with different chiralities, and the structure of the polymer side chains influences this sorting capability. While extensive research has been conducted on modifying the physical, optical, and electrical properties of CPs through side-chain modifications, the impact of these modifications on the sorting efficiency of sc-SWNTs remains underexplored. This study investigates the introduction of various conjugated side chains into naphthalene diimide-based CPs to create a biaxially extended conjugation pattern. The CP with a branched conjugated side chain (P3) exhibits reduced aggregation, resulting in improved wrapping ability and the formation of larger bundles of high-purity sc-SWNTs. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction analysis confirms that the potential interaction between sc-SWNTs and CPs occurs through π-π stacking. The field-effect transistor device fabricated with P3/sc-SWNTs demonstrates exceptional performance, with a significantly enhanced hole mobility of 4.72 cm2 V-1 s-1 and high endurance/bias stability. These findings suggest that biaxially extended side-chain modification is a promising strategy for improving the sorting efficiency and performance of sc-SWNTs by using CPs. This achievement can facilitate the development of more efficient and stable electronic devices.

One-step fabrication of three-dimensional macropore copolymer-modified polycarbonate array by photo-crosslinking for protein immunoassay

A photocross-linked copolymer was prepared, and could rapidly form a macropore structure in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) without the addition of porogen. The photo-crosslinking process contained the crosslinking of the copolymer itself and that with the polycarbonate substrate. The three-dimensional (3D) surface was achieved through one-step photo-crosslinking of the macropore structure. The macropore structure can be finely regulated by multiple dimensions, including monomer structure of the copolymer, PBS and copolymer concentration. Compared with the two-dimensional (2D) surface, the 3D surface has a controllable structure, a high loading capacity (59 μg cm^-2) and immobilization efficiency (92%), and the effect of inhibiting the coffee ring for protein immobilization. Immunoassay results show that a 3D surface immobilized by IgG has high sensitivity (LOD value of 5 ng mL^-1) and broader dynamic range (0.005-50 μg mL^-1). This simple and structure-controllable method for preparing 3D surfaces modified by macropore polymer has great potential applications in the fields of biochips and biosensing.

Tuning the Optical Properties and Conductivity of Bundles in Networks of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

The films of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are a promising material for flexible transparent electrodes, which performance depends not only on the properties of individual nanotubes but also, foremost, on bundling of individual nanotubes. This work investigates the impact of densification on optical and electronic properties of SWCNT bundles and fabricated films. Our ab initio analysis shows that the optimally densified bundles, consisting of a mixture of quasi-metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs, demonstrate quasi-metallic behavior and can be considered as an effective conducting medium. Our density functional theory calculations indicate the band curving and bandgap narrowing with the reduction of the distance between nanotubes inside bundles. Simulation results are consistent with the observed conductivity improvement and shift of the absorption peaks in SWCNT films densified in isopropyl alcohol. Therefore, not only individual nanotubes but also the bundles should be considered as building blocks for high-performance transparent conductive SWCNT-based films.

Biofiber waste derived zwitterionic and photocatalytic dye adsorbent: Switchable selectivity, in-situ degradation and multi-tasking application

Dye wastewater and discarded biofiber have brought huge pressure to sustainable developments of ecology and economy. By utilizing dopamine chemistry and benzophenone mediated "grafting onto" atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), this work reported a biomass adsorbent containing discarded wool substrate, photocatalytic PDA coating and zwitterionic polymer brushes for dyes removal. The grafted zwitterionic polymer brushes impart the material with not only high adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate, but also switchable adsorption selectivity and pH-controlled regeneration capability. Benefiting from such outstanding adsorption performance and excellent free-standing property, the adsorbent could fulfill diversified needs of both static and dynamic adsorptions. Under daylight, the constructed photocatalytic PDA coating could in-situ degrade the captured pollutant, thus achieving consecutive adsorption-degradation-regeneration utilization. Furthermore, through simple dip-coating and cleaner UV-irradiation techniques, the preparation process could be scaled up. This work contributes to both the upcycling of discarded biofiber waste and the development of advanced biomass adsorbent.

Excess Polymer in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Thin-Film Transistors: Its Removal Prior to Fabrication Is Unnecessary

Ultrapure semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube (sc-SWNT) dispersions produced through conjugated polymer sorting are ideal candidates for the fabrication of solution-processed organic electronic devices on a commercial scale. Protocols for sorting and dispersing ultrapure sc-SWNTs with conjugated polymers for thin-film transistor (TFT) applications have been well refined. Conventional wisdom dictates that removal of excess unbound polymer through filtration or centrifugation is necessary to produce high-performance TFTs. However, this is time-consuming, wasteful, and resource-intensive. In this report, we challenge this paradigm and demonstrate that excess unbound polymer during semiconductor film fabrication is not necessarily detrimental to device performance. Over 1200 TFT devices were fabricated from 30 unique polymer-sorted SWNT dispersions, prepared using two different alternating copolymers. Detailed Raman spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies of the random-network semiconductor films demonstrated that a simple solvent rinse during TFT fabrication was sufficient to remove unbound polymer from the sc-SWNT films, thus eliminating laborious polymer removal before TFT fabrication. Furthermore, below a threshold polymer concentration, the presence of excess polymer during fabrication did not significantly impede TFT performance. Preeminent performance was achieved for devices prepared from native polymer-sorted SWNT dispersions containing the "original" amount of excess unbound polymer (immediately following enrichment). Lastly, we developed an open-source Machine Learning algorithm to quantitatively analyze AFM images of SWNT films for surface coverage, number of tubes, and tube alignment.

Nanoscale Patterning of Carbon Nanotubes: Techniques, Applications, and Future

Carbon nanotube (CNT) devices and electronics are achieving maturity and directly competing or surpassing devices that use conventional materials. CNTs have demonstrated ballistic conduction, minimal scaling effects, high current capacity, low power requirements, and excellent optical/photonic properties; making them the ideal candidate for a new material to replace conventional materials in next-generation electronic and photonic systems. CNTs also demonstrate high stability and flexibility, allowing them to be used in flexible, printable, and/or biocompatible electronics. However, a major challenge to fully commercialize these devices is the scalable placement of CNTs into desired micro/nanopatterns and architectures to translate the superior properties of CNTs into macroscale devices. Precise and high throughput patterning becomes increasingly difficult at nanoscale resolution, but it is essential to fully realize the benefits of CNTs. The relatively long, high aspect ratio structures of CNTs must be preserved to maintain their functionalities, consequently making them more difficult to pattern than conventional materials like metals and polymers. This review comprehensively explores the recent development of innovative CNT patterning techniques with nanoscale lateral resolution. Each technique is critically analyzed and applications for the nanoscale-resolution approaches are demonstrated. Promising techniques and the challenges ahead for future devices and applications are discussed.
