Strong Oxide–Support Interactions Accelerate Selective Dehydrogenation of Propane by Modulating the Surface Oxygen

Promoting effect of FeOx addition on the mechanochemically prepared vanadium-based catalyst for real PCDD/Fs removal and mechanism insight

Industrial-use VOx-based catalysts usually have a higher active temperature window (> 250-300°C), which becomes a "bottleneck" for the practical application of PCDD/Fs catalytic degradation technology. In this work, VOx-FeOx/TiO2 catalyst prepared via mechanochemically method was investigated for the catalytic removal of PCDD/Fs. The removal efficiency of 1,2-DCBz, pure PCDD/Fs gas generated in the lab, PCDD/Fs from actual flue gas, long-term were studied, and the degradation mechanism was explored using FTIR and TOFMS. The degradation efficiency of 1,2-DCBz and PCDD/Fs on VOx-FeOx/TiO2 were higher than that of VOx/TiO2 catalyst, and the optimal FeOx addition ratio was 3 wt.%. The characterization results show that the addition of FeOx can effectively improve the pore structure, surface acidity, and VOx dispersion of the catalyst, thus contributing to increasing the V5+ content and surface-active oxygen, which is conducive to the improvement of adsorption and redox performance of the catalyst. Under the actual MSWI (municipal solid waste incineration) flue gas, the PCDD/Fs removal efficiency over VTi-3Fe-MC maintained long-term stability, higher than 85% for 240 min. This result was not significantly reduced compared with the data obtained in the laboratory. According to the analysis results of intermediate products by FTIR and GC-TOFMS, it can be inferred that the epoxidation fracture of benzene ring is the rate-limiting step of dioxin catalytic degradation reaction. This work gives an in-depth view into the PCDD/Fs removal over VOx-FeOx/TiO2 catalysts and could provide guidelines for the rational design of reliable catalysts for industrial applications.

Palladium Encapsulated by an Oxygen-Saturated TiO2 Overlayer for Low-Temperature SO2 -Tolerant Catalysis during CO Oxidation

The development of oxidation catalysts that are resistant to sulfur poisoning is crucial for extending the lifespan of catalysts in real-working conditions. Herein, we describe the design and synthesis of oxide-metal interaction (OMI) catalyst under oxidative atmospheres. By using organic coated TiO2 , an oxide/metal inverse catalyst with non-classical oxygen-saturated TiO2 overlayers were obtained at relatively low temperature. These catalysts were found to incorporate ultra-small Pd metal and support particles with exceptional reactivity and stability for CO oxidation (under 21 vol % O2 and 10 vol % H2 O). In particular, the core (Pd)-shell (TiO2 ) structured OMI catalyst exhibited excellent resistance to SO2 poisoning, yielding robust CO oxidation performance at 120 °C for 240 h (at 100 ppm SO2 and 10 vol % H2 O). The stability of this new OMI catalyst was explained through density functional theory (DFT) calculations that interfacial oxygen atoms at Pd-O-Ti sites (of oxygen-saturated overlayers) serve as non-metal active sites for low-temperature CO oxidation, and change the SO2 adsorption from metal(d)-to-SO2 (π*) back-bonding to much weaker σ(Ti-S) bonding.

Surface Chemistry and Catalytic Reactivity of Borocarbonitride in Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane

Borocarbonitride (BCN) materials are newly developed oxidative dehydrogenation catalysts that can efficiently convert alkanes to alkenes. However, BCN materials tend to form bulky B2 O3 due to over-oxidation at the high reaction temperature, resulting in significant deactivation. Here, we report a series of super stable BCN nanosheets for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) reaction. The catalytic performance of the BCN nanosheets can be easily regulated by changing the guanine dosage. The control experiment and structural characterization indicate that the introduction of a suitable amount of carbon could prevent the formation of excessive B2 O3 from BCN materials and maintain the 2D skeleton at a high temperature of 520 °C. The best-performing catalyst BCN exhibits 81.9 % selectivity towards olefins with a stable propane conversion of 35.8 %, and the propene productivity reaches 16.2 mmol h-1  g-1 , which is much better than hexagonal BN (h-BN) catalysts. Density functional theory calculation results show that the presence of dispersed rather than aggregated carbon atoms can significantly affect the electronic microenvironment of h-BN, thereby boosting the catalytic activity of BCN.

Disentangling Local Interfacial Confinement and Remote Spillover Effects in Oxide-Oxide Interactions

Supported oxides are widely used in many important catalytic reactions, in which the interaction between the oxide catalyst and oxide support is critical but still remains elusive. Here, we construct a chemically bonded oxide-oxide interface by chemical deposition of Co3O4 onto ZnO powder (Co3O4/ZnO), in which complete reduction of Co3O4 to Co0 has been strongly impeded. It was revealed that the local interfacial confinement effect between Co oxide and the ZnO support helps to maintain a metastable CoOx state in CO2 hydrogenation reaction, producing 93% CO. In contrast, a physically contacted oxide-oxide interface was formed by mechanically mixing Co3O4 and ZnO powders (Co3O4-ZnO), in which reduction of Co3O4 to Co0 was significantly promoted, demonstrating a quick increase of CO2 conversion to 45% and a high selectivity toward CH4 (92%) in the CO2 hydrogenation reaction. This interface effect is ascribed to unusual remote spillover of dissociated hydrogen species from ZnO nanoparticles to the neighboring Co oxide nanoparticles. This work clearly illustrates the equally important but opposite local and remote effects at the oxide-oxide interfaces. The distinct oxide-oxide interactions contribute to many diverse interface phenomena in oxide-oxide catalytic systems.

Role of the Support Effects in Single-Atom Catalysts

In recent years, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have received a significant amount of attention due to their high atomic utilization, low cost, high reaction activity, and selectivity for multiple catalytic reactions. Unfortunately, the high surface free energy of single atoms leads them easily migrated and aggregated. Therefore, support materials play an important role in the preparation and catalytic performance of SACs. Aiming at understanding the relationship between support materials and the catalytic performance of SACs, the support effects in SACs are introduced and reviewed herein. Moreover, special emphasis is placed on exploring the influence of the type and structure of supports on SAC catalytic performance through advanced characterization and theoretical research. Future research directions for support materials are also proposed, providing some insight into the design of SACs with high efficiency and high loading.

Unraveling the Active Vanadium Sites and Adsorbate Dynamics in VOx/CeO2 Oxidation Catalysts Using Transient IR Spectroscopy

The oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane over supported vanadia catalysts is an attractive route toward propene (propylene) with the potential of industrial application and has been extensively studied over decades. Despite numerous mechanistic studies, the active vanadyl site of the reaction has not been elucidated. In this work, we unravel the ODH reaction mechanism, including the nuclearity-dependent vanadyl and surface dynamics, over ceria-supported vanadia (VO_x/CeO₂) catalysts by applying (isotopic) modulation excitation IR spectroscopy supported by operando Raman and UV-vis spectroscopies. Based on our loading-dependent analysis, we were able to identify two different mechanisms leading to propylene, which are characterized by isopropyl- and acrylate-like intermediates. The modulation excitation IR approach also allows for the determination of the time evolution of the vanadia, hydroxyl, and adsorbate dynamics, underlining the intimate interplay between the surface vanadia species and the ceria support. Our results highlight the potential of transient IR spectroscopy to provide a detailed understanding of reaction mechanisms in oxidation catalysis and the dynamics of surface catalytic processes in general.

Dynamic transformation between bilayer islands and dinuclear clusters of Cr oxide on Au(111) through environment and interface effects

SignificanceFor oxide catalysts, it is important to elucidate and further control their atomic structures. In this work, well-defined CrO2 bilayer islands and Cr2O7 dinuclear clusters have been grown on Au(111) and unambiguously identified by scanning tunneling microscopy and theoretical calculations. Upon cycled redox treatments, the two kinds of oxide nanostructures can be reversibly transformed. It is interesting to note that both Cr oxides do not exist in bulk but need to be stabilized by the metal surface and the specific environment. Our results suggest that both redox atmosphere and interface confinement effects can be used to construct an oxide nanostructure with the specific chemical state and structure.

Heterometallic CeIV/ VV Oxo Clusters with Adjustable Catalytic Reactivities

Heterometallic Ce^IV/M oxo clusters are underexplored yet and can benefit from synergistic properties from combining cerium and other metal cations to produce efficient redox catalysts. Herein, we designed and synthesized a series of new Ce₁₂V₆ oxo clusters with different capping ligands: Ce₁₂V₆-SO₄, Ce₁₂V₆-OTs (OTs: toluenesulfonic acid), and Ce₁₂V₆-NBSA (NBSA: nitrobenzenesulfonic acid). Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) for all three structures reveals a Ce₁₂V₆ cubane core formulated [Ce₁₂(VO)₆O₂₄]¹⁸⁺ with cerium on the edges of the cube, vanadyl capping the faces, and sulfate on the corners. While infrared spectroscopy (IR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) proved the successful coordination of the organic ligands to the Ce₁₂V₆ core, liquid phase ⁵¹V NMR and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) confirmed the integrity of the clusters in the organic solutions. Furthermore, functionalization of the Ce₁₂V₆ core with organic ligands both provides increased solubility in term of homogeneous application and introduces porosity to the assemblies of Ce₁₂V₆-OTs and Ce₁₂V₆-NBSA in term of heterogeneous application, thus allowing more catalytic sites to be accessible and improving reactivity as compared to the nonporous and less soluble Ce₁₂V₆-SO₄. Meanwhile, the coordinated ligands also influenced the electronic environment of the catalytic sites, in turn affecting the reactivity of the cluster, which we probed by the selective oxidation of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES). This work provides a strategy to make full use of the catalytic sites within a class of inorganic sulfate capped clusters via organic ligand introduction.

Support Effects in Electrocatalysis and Their Synchrotron Radiation-Based Characterizations

Electrocatalysis is recognized as a significant process for energy conversion. In fact, numerous factors, including the variable electronic structure of electrocatalysts, rich intermediates, and mutable active phases, have important but complex influences on the catalytic process. In addition, the support of electrocatalysts is considered as one of key factors that correlate to the final catalytic performance. In this Perspective, some recent advances regarding the support effects in electrocatalysis are briefly summarized. Synchrotron radiation-based characterizations are introduced to reveal the support-induced modulation in electrocatalysts. Recent in situ/operando studies are emphasized for better understanding of the real interaction between catalysts and support, together with visualizing the dynamic catalytic process. Some perspectives are proposed that may accelerate more attention being given to the support's optimization for future practical applications.

A combined computational and experimental study of methane activation during oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) by surface metal oxide catalysts

The experimentally validated computational models developed herein, for the first time, show that Mn-promotion does not enhance the activity of the surface Na2WO4 catalytic active sites for CH4 heterolytic dissociation during OCM. Contrary to previous understanding, it is demonstrated that Mn-promotion poisons the surface WO4 catalytic active sites resulting in surface WO5 sites with retarded kinetics for C-H scission. On the other hand, dimeric Mn2O5 surface sites, identified and studied via ab initio molecular dynamics and thermodynamics, were found to be more efficient in activating CH4 than the poisoned surface WO5 sites or the original WO4 sites. However, the surface reaction intermediates formed from CH4 activation over the Mn2O5 surface sites are more stable than those formed over the Na2WO4 surface sites. The higher stability of the surface intermediates makes their desorption unfavorable, increasing the likelihood of over-oxidation to CO x , in agreement with the experimental findings in the literature on Mn-promoted catalysts. Consequently, the Mn-promoter does not appear to have an essential positive role in synergistically tuning the structure of the Na2WO4 surface sites towards CH4 activation but can yield MnO x surface sites that activate CH4 faster than Na2WO4 surface sites, but unselectively.

Crystal plane effect of ceria on supported copper catalyst for liquid-phase hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehyde

Ceria has been widely used as catalyst support displaying a size- or shape-dependent catalytic performance due to the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) effect with active metal. Almost all the studies on the SMSI effect of ceria-supported metal catalysts are involved generally in gas-phase reaction, but rarely in the liquid-phase reaction system. In this work, Cu/CeO₂-P (copper loaded on nano-polyhedral CeO₂ with (111) terminated surface) was investigated its catalytic performance on liquid-phase hydrogenation and studied the SMSI effect by comparing with the catalysts supported on nano-rod and nano-cube CeO₂. It was found that Cu was highly dispersed on the external surface of ceria in the Cu/CeO₂-P catalyst via a moderate SMSI effect. Furthermore, the degree of the interaction showed great influence on the chemical state of Cu species, and the ratio of (Cu⁺+Cu⁰)/Cu²⁺ in Cu/CeO₂-P was higher than Cu/CeO₂-R (Cu loaded on nano-rod CeO₂ with (110) plane) and Cu/CeO₂-C (Cu loaded on nano-cube CeO₂ with (100) facet). As a result, the Cu/CeO₂-P catalyst showed the best catalytic performance among three types of catalysts. Based on series of catalytic investigations, the catalytic performance in liquid-phase hydrogenation was intrinsically relevant to the crystal plane effect and reduced Cu proportion induced by an appropriate SMSI effect, which was completely different from gas-phase hydrogenation.
