Electrosynthesis of 5-Aminocoumaran Derivatives from Olefins and Aminophenols

The electrochemical synthesis of 5-aminocoumaran derivatives from easily oxidizable aminophenols and readily available olefins is described. The reaction efficiently produces 5-aminocoumarans in high yield under mild and environmentally friendly conditions without the necessity of catalysts, additives, oxidizing agents, or sacrificial reagents. Hydrogen as the sole byproduct of the reaction makes the method clean, highly atom-efficient, and step-economical.

Electrochemical Wastewater Refining: A Vision for Circular Chemical Manufacturing

Wastewater is an underleveraged resource; it contains pollutants that can be transformed into valuable high-purity products. Innovations in chemistry and chemical engineering will play critical roles in valorizing wastewater to remediate environmental pollution, provide equitable access to chemical resources and services, and secure critical materials from diminishing feedstock availability. This perspective envisions electrochemical wastewater refining─the use of electrochemical processes to tune and recover specific products from wastewaters─as the necessary framework to accelerate wastewater-based electrochemistry to widespread practice. We define and prescribe a use-informed approach that simultaneously serves specific wastewater-pollutant-product triads and uncovers a mechanistic understanding generalizable to broad use cases. We use this approach to evaluate research needs in specific case studies of electrocatalysis, stoichiometric electrochemical conversions, and electrochemical separations. Finally, we provide rationale and guidance for intentionally expanding the electrochemical wastewater refining product portfolio. Wastewater refining will require a coordinated effort from multiple expertise areas to meet the urgent need of extracting maximal value from complex, variable, diverse, and abundant wastewater resources.

Designed Nanomaterials for Electrocatalytic Organic Hydrogenation Using Water as the Hydrogen Source

ConspectusThe hydrogenation reaction is one of the most frequently used transformations in organic synthesis. Electrocatalytic hydrogenation by using water (H₂O) as the hydrogen source offers an efficient and sustainable approach to synthesize hydrogenated products under ambient conditions. Such a technique can avoid the use of high-pressure and flammable hydrogen gas or other toxic/expensive hydrogen donors, which usually cause environmental, safety, and cost concerns. Interestingly, utilizing easily available heavy water (D₂O) for deuterated syntheses is also attractive due to the widespread applications of deuterated molecules in organic synthesis and the pharmaceutical industry. Despite impressive achievements, electrode selection mainly relies on trial-and-error modes, and how electrodes dictate reaction outcomes remains elusive. Therefore, the rational design of nanostructured electrodes for driving the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of a series of organics via H₂O electrolysis is developed.In this Account, we review recent advances in the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of different types of organic functional groups, including C≡C, C≡N, C═C, C═O, and C-Br/I bonds, -NO₂, and N-heterocycles, with H₂O over nanostructured cathodes. First, the general reaction steps (reactant/intermediate adsorption, active atomic hydrogen (H*) formation, surface hydrogenation reaction, product desorption) are analyzed, and key factors are proposed to optimize hydrogenation performance (e.g., selectivity, activity, Faradaic efficiency (FE), reaction rate, and productivity) and inhibit side reactions. Then, ex situ and in situ spectroscopic tools to study key intermediates and interpret mechanisms are introduced. Third, based on the knowledge of key reaction steps and mechanisms, we introduce catalyst design principles in detail on how to optimize the adoption of reactants and key intermediates, promote the formation of H* from water electrolysis, inhibit hydrogen evolution and side reactions, and improve the selectivity, reaction rate, FEs, and space-time productivity of products. We then introduce some typical examples. (i) P- and S-modified Pd can decrease C═C adsorption and promote H* formation, enabling semihydrogenation of alkynes with high selectivity and FEs at lower potentials. Then, creating high-curvature nanotips to concentrate the substrates further speeds up the hydrogenation process. (ii) By introducing low-coordination sites into Fe and combining low-coordination sites and surface fluorine to modify Co to optimize the adsorption of intermediates and facilitate H* formation, hydrogenation of nitriles and N-heterocycles with high activity and selectivity is obtained. (iii) By forming isolated Pd sites to induce a specific σ-alkynyl adsorption of alkynes and steering S vacancies of Co₃S_4-x to preferentially adsorb -NO₂, hydrogenation of easily reduced group-decorated alkynes and nitroarenes with high chemoselectivity is realized. (iv) For gas reactant participated reactions, by designing hydrophobic gas diffusion layer-supported ultrasmall Cu nanoparticles to enhance mass transfer, improve H₂O activation, inhibit H₂ formation, and decrease ethylene adsorption, ampere-level ethylene production with a 97.7% FE is accomplished. Finally, we provide an outlook on the current challenges and promising opportunities in this area. We believe that the electrode selection principles summarized here provide a paradigm for designing highly active and selective nanomaterials to achieve electrocatalytic hydrogenation and other organic transformations with fascinating performances.

Allyl halide induced electrochemical degradation of lignin into double-bonded phenolic monomers

Lignin is one of the major macromolecule in nature that contains an aromatic ring structure, and also a potential source of high-value products such as biofuels and chemicals. However, Lignin is a kind of complex heterogeneous polymer which can produce many degradation products during processing or treatment. These degradation products are difficult to separate, making it challenging to use lignin directly for high-value applications. This study proposes an electrocatalytic method to degrade lignin by using allyl halides to induce double-bonded phenolic monomers, while avoiding separation. In an alkaline solution, the three basic structural units (G, S, and H) of lignin were transformed into phenolic monomers by introducing allyl halide, which could effectively expand lignin application space. This reaction was achieved using a Pb/PbO₂ electrode as the anode and copper as the cathode. It was further confirmed that double-bonded phenolic monomers were obtained by degradation. 3-allylbromide has more active allyl radicals and significantly higher product yields than 3-allylchloride. The yields of 4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol, 4-allyl-2,6-dimethoxyphenol and 2-allylphenol could reach 17.21 g/kg-lignin, 7.75 g/kg-lignin, and 0.67 g/kg-lignin respectively. These mixed double-bond monomers can be used as monomer materials for in-situ polymerization without further separation, which lays the foundation for high value-added applications of lignin.

Recent Advances in Catalytic and Technology-Driven Radical Addition to N,N-Disubstituted Iminium Species

Recently, radical chemistry has grown exponentially in the toolbox of organic synthetic chemists. Upon the (re)introduction of modern catalytic and technology-driven strategies, the implementation of highly reactive radical species is currently facilitated while expanding the scope of numerous synthetic methodologies. In this context, this review intends to cover the recent advances in radical-based transformations of N,N-disubstituted iminium substrates that encompass unique reactivities with respect to imines or protonated iminium salts. In particular, we have focused on the literature concerning the dipole type substrates, such as nitrones or azomethine imines, together with the chemistry of N⁺-X^- (X = O, NR) azaarenium dipoles, which proved to be very versatile platforms in that field of research. The N-alkylazaarenium salts were been considered, which demonstrated specific reactivity profiles in radical chemistry.

Unexpected Direct Synthesis of Tunable Redox-Active Benzil-Linked Polymers via the Benzoin Reaction

Strategies for the sustainable synthesis of redox-active organic polymers could lead to next-generation organic electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage, electrocatalysis, and electro-swing chemical separations. Among redox-active moieties, benzils or aromatic 1,2-diones are particularly attractive due to their high theoretical gravimetric capacities and fast charge/discharge rates. Herein, we demonstrate that the cyanide-catalyzed polymerization of simple dialdehyde monomers unexpectedly leads to insoluble redox-active benzil-linked polymers instead of the expected benzoin polymers, as supported by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and electrochemical characterization. Mechanistic studies suggest that cyanide-mediated benzoin oxidation occurs by hydride transfer to the solvent, and that the insolubility of the benzil-linked polymers protects them from subsequent cyanolysis. The thiophene-based polymer poly(BTDA) is an intriguing organic electrode material that demonstrates two reversible one-electron reductions with monovalent cations such as Li+ and Na+ but one two-electron reduction with divalent Mg2+. As such, the tandem benzoin-oxidation polymerization reported herein represents a sustainable method for the synthesis of highly tunable and redox-active organic materials.

Romo AI, Pudar S, Putnam ST, Bustos E, Rodríguez-López J. Real-Time Detection of Hydroxyl Radical Generated at Operating Electrodes via Redox-Active Adduct Formation Using Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

The hydroxyl radical (•OH) is one of the most attractive reactive oxygen species due to its high oxidation power and its clean (photo)(electro)generation from water, leaving no residues and creating new prospects for efficient wastewater treatment and electrosynthesis. Unfortunately, in situ detection of •OH is challenging due to its short lifetime (few ns). Using lifetime-extending spin traps, such as 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) to generate the [DMPO-OH]• adduct in combination with electron spin resonance (ESR), allows unambiguous determination of its presence in solution. However, this method is cumbersome and lacks the necessary sensitivity and versatility to explore and quantify •OH generation dynamics at electrode surfaces in real time. Here, we identify that [DMPO-OH]• is redox-active with E0 = 0.85 V vs Ag|AgCl and can be conveniently detected on Au and C ultramicroelectrodes. Using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), a four-electrode technique capable of collecting the freshly generated [DMPO-OH]• from near the electrode surface, we detected its generation in real time from operating electrodes. We also generated images of [DMPO-OH]• production and estimated and compared its generation efficiency at various electrodes (boron-doped diamond, tin oxide, titanium foil, glassy carbon, platinum, and lead oxide). Density functional calculations, ESR measurements, and bulk calibration using the Fenton reaction helped us unambiguously identify [DMPO-OH]• as the source of redox activity. We hope these findings will encourage the rapid, inexpensive, and quantitative detection of •OH for conducting informed explorations of its role in mediated oxidation processes at electrode surfaces for energy, environmental, and synthetic applications.

Review of the Electrospinning Process and the Electro-Conversion of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into Added-Value Chemicals

Electrochemical converters (electrolyzers, fuel cells, and batteries) have gained prominence during the last decade for the unavoidable energy transition and the sustainable synthesis of platform chemicals. One of the key elements of these systems is the electrode material on which the electrochemical reactions occur, and therefore its design will impact their performance. This review focuses on the electrospinning method by examining a number of features of experimental conditions. Electrospinning is a fiber-spinning technology used to produce three-dimensional and ultrafine fibers with tunable diameters and lengths. The thermal treatment and the different analyses are discussed to understand the changes in the polymer to create usable electrode materials. Electrospun fibers have unique properties such as high surface area, high porosity, tunable surface properties, and low cost, among others. Furthermore, a little introduction to the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) electrooxidation coupled to H₂ production was included to show the benefit of upgrading biomass derivates in electrolyzers. Indeed, environmental and geopolitical constraints lead to shifts towards organic/inorganic electrosynthesis, which allows for one to dispense with polluting, toxic and expensive reagents. The electrooxidation of HMF instead of water (OER, oxygen evolution reaction) in an electrolyzer can be elegantly controlled to electro-synthesize added-value organic chemicals while lowering the required energy for CO₂-free H₂ production.

Interfacing single-atom catalysis with continuous-flow organic electrosynthesis

The global warming crisis has sparked a series of environmentally cautious trends in chemistry, allowing us to rethink the way we conduct our synthesis, and to incorporate more earth-abundant materials in our catalyst design. "Single-atom catalysis" has recently appeared on the catalytic spectrum, and has truly merged the benefits that homogeneous and heterogeneous analogues have to offer. Further still, the possibility to activate these catalysts by means of a suitable electric potential could pave the way for a true integration of diverse synthetic methodologies and renewable electricity. Despite their esteemed benefits, single-atom electrocatalysts are still limited to the energy sector (hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction, etc.) and numerous examples in the literature still invoke the use of precious metals (Pd, Pt, Ir, etc.). Additionally, batch electroreactors are employed, which limit the intensification of such processes. It is of paramount importance that the field continues to grow in a more sustainable direction, seeking new ventures into the space of organic electrosynthesis and flow electroreactor technologies. In this piece, we discuss some of the progress being made with earth abundant homogeneous and heterogeneous electrocatalysts and flow electrochemistry, within the context of organic electrosynthesis, and highlight the prospects of alternatively utilizing single-atom catalysts for such applications.

Catalysis for e-Chemistry: Need and Gaps for a Future De-Fossilized Chemical Production, with Focus on the Role of Complex (Direct) Syntheses by Electrocatalysis

The prospects, needs and limits in current approaches in catalysis to accelerate the transition to e-chemistry, where this term indicates a fossil fuel-free chemical production, are discussed. It is suggested that e-chemistry is a necessary element of the transformation to meet the targets of net zero emissions by year 2050 and that this conversion from the current petrochemistry is feasible. However, the acceleration of the development of catalytic technologies based on the use of renewable energy sources (indicated as reactive catalysis) is necessary, evidencing that these are part of a system of changes and thus should be assessed from this perspective. However, it is perceived that the current studies in the area are not properly addressing the needs to develop the catalytic technologies required for e-chemistry, presenting a series of relevant aspects and directions in which research should be focused to develop the framework system transformation necessary to implement e-chemistry.

Paired Electrolysis Enabled Ni-Catalyzed Unconventional Cascade Reductive Thiolation Using Sulfinates

Herein, we have reported a nickel-catalyzed cascade reductive thiolation of aryl halides with sulfinates driven by paired electrolysis. This protocol uses sulfinates as the sulfur source, and various thioethers could be synthesized under mild conditions. By mechanism exploration, we find that a cascade chemical step is allowed on the electrode interface and could alter the reaction pathway in paired electrolysis, whose findings could help the discovery of novel cascade reactions with unique reactivity.

Electrocatalysis as an enabling technology for organic synthesis

Electrochemistry has recently gained increased attention as a versatile strategy for achieving challenging transformations at the forefront of synthetic organic chemistry. Electrochemistry's unique ability to generate highly reactive radical and radical ion intermediates in a controlled fashion under mild conditions has inspired the development of a number of new electrochemical methodologies for the preparation of valuable chemical motifs. Particularly, recent developments in electrosynthesis have featured an increased use of redox-active electrocatalysts to further enhance control over the selective formation and downstream reactivity of these reactive intermediates. Furthermore, electrocatalytic mediators enable synthetic transformations to proceed in a manner that is mechanistically distinct from purely chemical methods, allowing for the subversion of kinetic and thermodynamic obstacles encountered in conventional organic synthesis. This review highlights key innovations within the past decade in the area of synthetic electrocatalysis, with emphasis on the mechanisms and catalyst design principles underpinning these advancements. A host of oxidative and reductive electrocatalytic methodologies are discussed and are grouped according to the classification of the synthetic transformation and the nature of the electrocatalyst.
