Sacrificial Cu Layer Mediated the Formation of an Active and Stable Supported Iridium Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalyst

Vertically Stacked Amorphous Ir/Ru/Ir Oxide Nanosheets for Boosted Acidic Water Splitting

Integrating multiple functional components into vertically stacked heterostructures offers a prospective approach to manipulating the physicochemical properties of materials. The synthesis of vertically stacked heterogeneous noble metal oxides remains a challenge. Herein, we report a surface segregation approach to create vertically stacked amorphous Ir/Ru/Ir oxide nanosheets (NSs). Cross-sectional high-angle annular darkfield scanning transmission electron microscopy images demonstrate a three-layer heterostructure in the amorphous Ir/Ru/Ir oxide NSs, with IrOx layers located on the upper and lower surfaces, and a layer of RuOx sandwiched between the two IrOx layers. The vertically stacked heterostructure is a result of the diffusion of Ir atoms from the amorphous IrRuOx solid solution to the surface. The obtained A-Ir/Ru/Ir oxide NSs display an ultralow overpotential of 191 mV at 10 mA cm-2 toward acid oxygen evolution reaction and demonstrate excellent performance in a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer, which requires only 1.63 V to achieve 1 A cm-2 at 60 °C, with virtually no activity decay observed after a 1300 h test.

Revealing the construction of CuOCe interfacial sites via increased support utilization for enhanced CO2 electroreduction and Li-CO2 batteries

Leveraging designed electronic oxide-metal interactions (EOMI), cerium-supported copper demonstrates remarkable competitiveness in the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). Nevertheless, the limited utilization efficiency of conventional cerium oxide (CeO2) support hampers the EOMI effect. Furthermore, a comprehensive understanding of the influence of distinct crystalline surfaces of CeO2 on the loaded active copper (Cu) species remains elusive. Herein, oxide carriers with diverse crystal facets are acquire for loading to load Cu species through the incorporation of cerium-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) precursors. Simultaneously, owing to the elevated specific surface area conferred by MOF precursors, Cu/CeO2 hosts ample catalytically active sites for carbon dioxide (CO2) electrocatalytic reactions and as catalytic cathodes for lithium-CO2 (Li-CO2) batteries. Furthermore, the carbon converted from organic ligands in MOFs precursors not only proficiently immobilizes and disperses the active sites, but also enhances the inherent conductive stability of the oxide while augmenting energy utilization efficiency. Leveraging these advantages, the electrocatalyst derived from MOFs achieves a peak CO2-to-methane Faradaic efficiency of 57.9 %, whereas the assembled Li-CO2 batteries exhibit notable activity and durability, boasting a substantial full-discharge capacity of 8907 mAh/g, a discharge voltage of 2.65 V, and an extended cycle life exceeding 1000 h. Mechanistic investigations were conducted using density functional theory (DFT) calculations to thoroughly explore the impact of CeO2 carrier crystal facets, specifically (111), (100), and (110), on the loaded copper species. Notably, (110) was identified as the optimal facet due to its favorable contributions to electronic structure optimization and stability enhancement.

"Nano Lab" Advanced Characterization Platform for Studying Electrocatalytic Iridium Nanoparticles Dispersed on TiOxNy Supports Prepared on Ti Transmission Electron Microscopy Grids

Aiming at speeding up the discovery and understanding of promising electrocatalysts, a novel experimental platform, i.e., the Nano Lab, is introduced. It is based on state-of-the-art physicochemical characterization and atomic-scale tracking of individual synthesis steps as well as subsequent electrochemical treatments targeting nanostructured composites. This is provided by having the entire experimental setup on a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grid. Herein, the oxygen evolution reaction nanocomposite electrocatalyst, i.e., iridium nanoparticles dispersed on a high-surface-area TiO_xN_y support prepared on the Ti TEM grid, is investigated. By combining electrochemical concepts such as anodic oxidation of TEM grids, floating electrode-based electrochemical characterization, and identical location TEM analysis, relevant information from the entire composite's cycle, i.e., from the initial synthesis step to electrochemical operation, can be studied. We reveal that Ir nanoparticles as well as the TiO_xN_y support undergo dynamic changes during all steps. The most interesting findings made possible by the Nano Lab concept are the formation of Ir single atoms and only a small decrease in the N/O ratio of the TiO_xN_y-Ir catalyst during the electrochemical treatment. In this way, we show that the precise influence of the nanoscale structure, composition, morphology, and electrocatalyst's locally resolved surface sites can be deciphered on the atomic level. Furthermore, the Nano Lab's experimental setup is compatible with ex situ characterization and other analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and identical location scanning electron microscopy, hence providing a comprehensive understanding of structural changes and their effects. Overall, an experimental toolbox for the systematic development of supported electrocatalysts is now at hand.

Alloying as a Strategy to Boost the Stability of Copper Nanocatalysts during the Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Reaction

Copper nanocatalysts are among the most promising candidates to drive the electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR). However, the stability of such catalysts during operation is sub-optimal, and improving this aspect of catalyst behavior remains a challenge. Here, we synthesize well-defined and tunable CuGa nanoparticles (NPs) and demonstrate that alloying Cu with Ga considerably improves the stability of the nanocatalysts. In particular, we discover that CuGa NPs containing 17 at. % Ga preserve most of their CO₂RR activity for at least 20 h while Cu NPs of the same size reconstruct and lose their CO₂RR activity within 2 h. Various characterization techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, suggest that the addition of Ga suppresses Cu oxidation at open-circuit potential (ocp) and induces significant electronic interactions between Ga and Cu. Thus, we explain the observed stabilization of the Cu by Ga as a result of the higher oxophilicity and lower electronegativity of Ga, which reduce the propensity of Cu to oxidize at ocp and enhance the bond strength in the alloyed nanocatalysts. In addition to addressing one of the major challenges in CO₂RR, this study proposes a strategy to generate NPs that are stable under a reducing reaction environment.

Iridium oxide nanoribbons with metastable monoclinic phase for highly efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Metastable metal oxides with ribbon morphologies have promising applications for energy conversion catalysis, however they are largely restricted by their limited synthesis methods. In this study, a monoclinic phase iridium oxide nanoribbon with a space group of C2/m is successfully obtained, which is distinct from rutile iridium oxide with a stable tetragonal phase (P42/mnm). A molten-alkali mechanochemical method provides a unique strategy for achieving this layered nanoribbon structure via a conversion from a monoclinic phase K_0.25IrO₂ (I2/m (12)) precursor. The formation mechanism of IrO₂ nanoribbon is clearly revealed, with its further conversion to IrO₂ nanosheet with a trigonal phase. When applied as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction in acidic condition, the intrinsic catalytic activity of IrO₂ nanoribbon is higher than that of tetragonal phase IrO₂ due to the low d band centre of Ir in this special monoclinic phase structure, as confirmed by density functional theory calculations.

Iridium Stabilizes Ceramic Titanium Oxynitride Support for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Decreasing iridium loading in the electrocatalyst presents a crucial challenge in the implementation of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. In this respect, fine dispersion of Ir on electrically conductive ceramic supports is a promising strategy. However, the supporting material needs to meet the demanding requirements such as structural stability and electrical conductivity under harsh oxygen evolution reaction (OER) conditions. Herein, nanotubular titanium oxynitride (TiON) is studied as a support for iridium nanoparticles. Atomically resolved structural and compositional transformations of TiON during OER were followed using a task-specific advanced characterization platform. This combined the electrochemical treatment under floating electrode configuration and identical location transmission electron microscopy (IL-TEM) analysis of an in-house-prepared Ir-TiON TEM grid. Exhaustive characterization, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, demonstrates and confirms that both the Ir nanoparticles and single atoms induce a stabilizing effect on the ceramic support via marked suppression of the oxidation tendency of TiON under OER conditions.

Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysts for the Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer: Challenges on Stability

Hydrogen generated by proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer holds a promising potential to complement the traditional energy structure and achieve the global target of carbon neutrality for its efficient, clean, and sustainable nature. The acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), owing to its sluggish kinetic process, remains a bottleneck that dominates the efficiency of overall water splitting. Over the past few decades, tremendous efforts have been devoted to exploring OER activity, whereas most show unsatisfying stability to meet the demand for industrial application of PEM electrolyzer. In this review, systematic considerations of the origin and strategies based on OER stability challenges are focused on. Intrinsic deactivation of the material and the extrinsic balance of plant-induced destabilization are summarized. Accordingly, rational strategies for catalyst design including doping and leaching, support effect, coordination effect, strain engineering, phase and facet engineering are discussed for their contribution to the promoted OER stability. Moreover, advanced in situ/operando characterization techniques are put forward to shed light on the OER pathways as well as the structural evolution of the OER catalyst, giving insight into the deactivation mechanisms. Finally, outlooks toward future efforts on the development of long-term and practical electrocatalysts for the PEM electrolyzer are provided.

Supported Iridium-based Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts - Recent Developments

The commercialization of acidic proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE) is heavily hindered by the price and scarcity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst, i. e. iridium and its oxides. One of the solutions to enhance the utilization of this precious metal is to use a support to distribute well dispersed Ir nanoparticles. In addition, adequately chosen support can also impact the activity and stability of the catalyst. However, not many materials can sustain the oxidative and acidic conditions of OER in PEMWE. Hereby, we critically and extensively review the different materials proposed as possible supports for OER in acidic media and the effect they have on iridium performances.

Interrelations of Oxygen Evolution and Iridium Dissolution Mechanisms

The widespread utilization of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers currently remains uncertain, as they rely on the use of highly scarce iridium as the only viable catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is known to present the major energy losses of the process. Understanding the mechanistic origin of the different activities and stabilities of Ir‐based catalysts is, therefore, crucial for a scale‐up of green hydrogen production. It is known that structure influences the dissolution, which is the main degradation mechanism and shares common intermediates with the OER. In this Minireview, the state‐of‐the‐art understanding of dissolution and its relationship with the structure of different iridium catalysts is gathered and correlated to different mechanisms of the OER. A perspective on future directions of investigation is also given.
