Charge-Transfer Mechanism in Oxygen Reduction over Co Porphyrins: Single-Site Molecular Electrocatalysts to Macromolecular Frameworks

Experimentally validating sabatier plot by molecular level microenvironment customization for oxygen electroreduction

Microenvironmental modifications on metal sites are crucial to tune oxygen reduction catalytic behavior and decrypt intrinsic mechanism, whereas the stochastic properties of traditional pyrolyzed single-atom catalysts induce vague recognition on structure-reactivity relations. Herein, we report a theoretical descriptor relying on binding energies of oxygen adsorbates and directly associating the derived Sabatier volcano plot with calculated overpotential to forecast catalytic efficiency of cobalt porphyrin. This Sabatier volcano plot instructs that electron-withdrawing substituents mitigate the over-strong *OH intermediate adsorption by virtue of the decreased proportion of electrons in bonding orbital. To experimentally validate this speculation, we implement a secondary sphere microenvironment customization strategy on cobalt porphyrin-based polymer nanocomposite analogs. Systematic X-ray spectroscopic and in situ electrochemical characterizations capture the pronounced accessible active site density and the fast interfacial/outward charge migration kinetics contributions for the optimal carboxyl group-substituted catalyst. This work offers ample strategies for designing single-atom catalysts with well-managed microenvironment under the guidance of Sabatier volcano map.

Engineering organic polymers as emerging sustainable materials for powerful electrocatalysts

Cost-effective and high-efficiency catalysts play a central role in various sustainable electrochemical energy conversion technologies that are being developed to generate clean energy while reducing carbon emissions, such as fuel cells, metal-air batteries, water electrolyzers, and carbon dioxide conversion. In this context, a recent climax in the exploitation of advanced earth-abundant catalysts has been witnessed for diverse electrochemical reactions involved in the above mentioned sustainable pathways. In particular, polymer catalysts have garnered considerable interest and achieved substantial progress very recently, mainly owing to their pyrolysis-free synthesis, highly tunable molecular composition and microarchitecture, readily adjustable electrical conductivity, and high stability. In this review, we present a timely and comprehensive overview of the latest advances in organic polymers as emerging materials for powerful electrocatalysts. First, we present the general principles for the design of polymer catalysts in terms of catalytic activity, electrical conductivity, mass transfer, and stability. Then, the state-of-the-art engineering strategies to tailor the polymer catalysts at both molecular (i.e., heteroatom and metal atom engineering) and macromolecular (i.e., chain, topology, and composition engineering) levels are introduced. Particular attention is paid to the insightful understanding of structure-performance correlations and electrocatalytic mechanisms. The fundamentals behind these critical electrochemical reactions, including the oxygen reduction reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, and hydrogen oxidation reaction, as well as breakthroughs in polymer catalysts, are outlined as well. Finally, we further discuss the current challenges and suggest new opportunities for the rational design of advanced polymer catalysts. By presenting the progress, engineering strategies, insightful understandings, challenges, and perspectives, we hope this review can provide valuable guidelines for the future development of polymer catalysts.

Conservation of Nickel Ion Single-Active Site Character in a Bottom-Up Constructed π-Conjugated Molecular Network

On-surface chemistry holds the potential for ultimate miniaturization of functional devices. Porphyrins are promising building-blocks in exploring advanced nanoarchitecture concepts. More stable molecular materials of practical interest with improved charge transfer properties can be achieved by covalently interconnecting molecular units. On-surface synthesis allows to construct extended covalent nanostructures at interfaces not conventionally available. Here, we address the synthesis and properties of covalent molecular network composed of interconnected constituents derived from halogenated nickel tetraphenylporphyrin on Au(111). We report that the π-extended two-dimensional material exhibits dispersive electronic features. Concomitantly, the functional Ni cores retain the same single-active site character of their single-molecule counterparts. This opens new pathways when exploiting the high robustness of transition metal cores provided by bottom-up constructed covalent nanomeshes.
