Nanosheet-Engineered NH2-MIL-125 with Highly Active Facets for Enhanced Solar CO2 Reduction

Metal-Organic Frameworks Derived Carbon-Supported Metal Electrocatalysts for Energy-Related Reduction Reactions

Electrochemical reduction reactions, as cathodic processes in many energy-related devices, significantly impact the overall efficiency determined mainly by the performance of electrocatalysts. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived carbon-supported metal materials have become one of star electrocatalysts due to their tunable structure and composition through ligand design and metal screening. However, for different electroreduction reactions, the required active metal species vary in phase component, electronic state, and catalytic center configuration, hence requiring effective customization. From this perspective, this review comprehensively analyzes the structural design principles, metal loading strategies, practical electroreduction performance, and complex catalytic mechanisms, thereby providing insights and guidance for the future rational design of such electroreduction catalysts.

Layered (AlO)2OH·VO3 composite superstructures for ultralong lifespan aqueous zinc-ion batteries

The unique superstructures electrode materials are of dominant significance for improving the performance of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). In this work, using nano MIL-96 (Al) as the precursor, a series of the layered (AlO)2OH·VO3 composite superstructures with different morphologies and V-oxide contents were prepared by combining calcination and hydrothermal synthesis. Among which, the HBC650·V4 superstructure is composed of the amorphous Al2O3/C, V-oxide, and the fluffy structure of (AlO)2OH, thus the superstructure can enhance the stability, increase the active center, and shorten Zn2+ diffusion, respectively. It is commendable that, the HBC650·V4 superstructure exhibits a high specific capacity of 180.1 mAh·g-1 after 300 cycles at 0.5 A·g-1. Furthermore, the capacity retention can be as high as 99.6 % after 5000 cycles at a high current density of 5.0 A·g-1, showing superior long cycling stability. Importantly, the in-situ XRD patterns and ex-situ analysis revealed the structural changes and reaction mechanisms of the HBC650·V4 superstructure during Zn2+ insertion/extraction. Therefore, the HBC650·V4 superstructure prepared using Al-MOF exhibits the advanced AZIBs performance. The preparation of nano-MOF into multifunctional superstructures through innovative strategies will be development trend in this field, which opens a new way to design AZIBs cathode materials.

Engineering of Ultra-Thin Layer of MIL-125(Ti) Nanosheet\Zn-Tetracarboxy-Phthalocyanine S-Scheme Heterojunction as Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction Catalyst

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with ultrathin 2D structure have attracted remarkable attention in photocatalytic application owing to the accessibility of abundant active sites on the surface. But high charge recombination results in poor photocatalytic activity. Herein, the synthesis of ultrathin MIL-125(Ti) nanosheets is reported with a thickness of 1.3 nm through a simple chemical reaction route of precursor solution aging and subsequent solvothermal process for photocatalytic CO2 production. The maximal CO evolution rate achieves 200.8 µmol g-1 h-1, which is prominently higher than that (78.6 µmol g-1 h-1) of the bulk MIL-125(Ti) counterpart. Furthermore, the structurally stable Zn (II) tetracarboxy phthalocyanine (ZnTcPc) molecules assembly on ultrathin MIL-125(Ti) nanosheet (NS) to form MIL-125(Ti) NS\ZnTcPc S-scheme heterojunction through the strong interaction between the Ti3+ in MIL-125(Ti) and the COOH in ZnTcPc. The introduction of ZnTcPc greatly extends light absorption range and increases charge separation rate. The experimental and density functional theory calculation results validate that the MIL-125(Ti) NS\ZnTcPc S-scheme heterojunction can favor CO2 adsorption and effectively depress the formation energy of the intermediates, achieving a high CO evolution rate of 450.8 µmol g-1 h-1. This work provides a strategy of engineering 2D MOF-based heterostructure systems for photocatalytic application.

Highly selective detection of 2,4-dinitrophenol by fluorescent NH2-MIL-125(Ti) via dual-parameter sensing technology

The organic contaminant 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) is widely prevalent and poses significant risks to human health. Although numerous in-depth studies having been reported on the highly sensitive detection of 2,4-DNP, there are still challenges to its selective detection. Here, the fluorescence intensity ratio (I0/I) and emission peak shift (Δλ) were utilized for selective detection of 2,4-DNP by NH2-MIL-125(Ti). Notably, the emission peak of the NH2-MIL-125(Ti) suspension exhibited a remarkable red shift in the presence of 2,4-DNP (Δλ = 26 nm), accompanied by the blue shift or weak red shift of analogs, which provided a solid basis for selective detection of 2,4-DNP. Meanwhile, the I0/I ratio of the NH2-MIL-125(Ti) suspension exhibited a robust linear correlation with 2,4-DNP at the low concentration range (0-70 μM). The interaction of the analyte with NH2-MIL-125(Ti) was revealed to involve intermolecular charge transfer (ICT) and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) through XPS, FTIR, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Additionally, we achieved the detection of 2,4-DNP using a smartphone by recognizing both the blue (B) values and the luminance (L) values. The obtained results demonstrated that the NH2-MIL-125(Ti) probe based on dual-parameter sensing technology exhibited excellent potential for selectively detecting 2,4-DNP in water environments, thereby offering significant prospects for its application in water quality assessment.

S-scheme Cu3P/TiO2 heterojunction for outstanding photocatalytic water splitting

TiO2 photocatalysts are of great interest in the fields of environmental purification, new energy and so on, because of their non-toxicity, high stability, high redox ability and low cost. However, the photogenerated carriers are severely recombined, which limits the application of TiO2 photocatalysts. Herein, S-scheme Cu3P/TiO2 heterojunction composites were successfully synthesized by a simple and efficient microwave hydrothermal method, and the results show that the hydrogen production rate of Cu3P/TiO2 is 5.83 mmol∙g-1∙h-1 under simulated sunlight irradiation, which is 7.3 and 83.3 times higher than that of pure TiO2 and Cu3P, respectively. This excellent performance is derived from the internal electric field (IEF) and energy band bending generated by the S-scheme heterojunction formed between Cu3P and TiO2. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that the Cu3P possess smaller work function and more negative conduction band (CB) position than that of TiO2, which is very conducive to greatly improve the H+ reduction ability and hydrogen production performance. This work provides a new idea for the reveal of electron transfer paths and active sites in S-scheme heterojunctions and deepens the mechanism understanding.

Blocking Accretion Enables Dimension Reduction of Metal-Organic Framework for Photocatalytic Performance

The evolution and formation process of two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) primarily arise from the anisotropic growth of crystals, leading to variations in photocatalytic performance. It is crucial to achieve a synergistic combination of anisotropic electron transfer direction and dimension reduction strategies. In this study, a novel approach that effectively blocks crystal growth accretion through the coordination of solvent molecules is presented, achieving the successful synthesis of impurity-free two-dimensional nanosheet Zn-PTC with exceptional hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance (15.4 mmol g-1  h-1 ). The structural and photophysical characterizations validate the successful prevention of crystal accretion, while establishing correlation between structural anisotropy and intrinsic charge transfer mode through transient spectroscopy. These findings unequivocally demonstrate that electron transfer along the [001] direction plays a pivotal role in the redox performance of nano-Zn-PTC. Subsequently, by coupling the photocatalytic performance and density functional theory (DFT) simulation calculations, the carrier diffusion kinetics is explored, revealing that effective dimension reduction along the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) direction is the key to achieving superior photocatalytic performance.

Understanding the Role of Titanium Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets in Modulating Anode Chemistry for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries have attracted a continually increasing level of interest for large-scale energy storage because they are highly safe and have high energy density and abundant reserves. However, Zn anodes face significant challenges such as severe dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We here propose an efficient Zn2+ sieve strategy for modulating the anode chemistry using two-dimensional NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets. Theoretical investigations reveal the crucial role of the Ti MOF in regulating Zn2+ solvation structures for fast diffusion and uniform deposition and decreasing HER reactivity. The structure of the nanosheets enables abundant accessible desolvation sites and shortened ionic pathways. As a result, the MOF nanosheet-protected Zn anode exhibited greatly improved cycling stability in both symmetric cells and full cells. Operando optical monitoring and postmortem analysis revealed effective suppression of dendrite growth and HER by Ti MOF nanosheets. This anti-HER MOF-enabled Zn2+ sieve strategy provides a viable Zn anode and provides new insights for optimizing aqueous batteries.

Vitamin B12 and a metal-organic framework enable the photocatalytic generation of alkyl radicals

A versatile Co-catalyst-vitamin B12 (cobalamin)-can be photochemically reduced to its catalytically active Co(I) form under visible light irradiation, in the presence of MIL-125-NH2(Ti) as a photocatalyst and utilized for the generation of alkyl radicals. The prior reduction of cobalamin to the Co(II) form is not required in this method.

The Effect of Linker-to-Metal Energy Transfer on the Photooxidation Performance of an Isostructural Series of Pyrene-Based Rare-Earth Metal-Organic Frameworks

The tetratopic linker, 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoic acid)pyrene (H4 TBAPy) along with rare-earth (RE) ions is used for the synthesis of 9 isostructures of a metal-organic framework (MOF) with shp topology, named RE-CU-10 (RE = Y(III), Gd(III), Tb(III), Dy(III), Ho(III), Er(III), Tm(III), Yb(III), and Lu(III)). The synthesis of each RE-CU-10 analogue requires different reaction conditions to achieve phase pure products. Single crystal X-ray diffraction indicates the presence of a RE9 -cluster in Y- to Tm-CU-10, while a RE11 -cluster is observed for Yb- and Lu-CU-10. The photooxidation performance of RE-CU-10 analogues is evaluated, observing competition between linker-to-metal energy transfer versus the generation of singlet oxygen. The singlet oxygen produced is used to detoxify a mustard gas simulant 2-chloroethylethyl sulfide, with half-lives ranging from 4.0 to 5.8 min, some of the fastest reported to date using UV-irradiation and < 1 mol% catalyst, in methanol under O2 saturation.

Guest-Induced Multilevel Charge Transport Strategy for Developing Metal-Organic Frameworks to Boost Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Encapsulating photogenerated charge-hopping nodes and space transport bridges within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a promising method of boosting the photocatalytic performance. Herein, this work embeds electron transfer media (9,10-bis(4-pyridyl)anthracene (BPAN)) in MOF cavities to build multi-level electron transfer paths. The MOF cavities are accurately regulated to investigate the significance of the multi-level electron transfer paths in the process of CO2 photoreduction by evaluating the difference in the number of guest media. The prepared MOFs, {[Co(BPAN)(1,4-dicarboxybenzene)(H2 O)2 ]·BPAN·2H2 O} and {[Co(BPAN)2 (4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid)2 (H2 O)2 ]·2BPAN·2H2 O} (denoted as BPAN-Co-1 and BPAN-Co-2), exhibit efficient visible-light-driven CO2 conversion properties. The CO photoreduction efficacy of BPAN-Co-2 (5598 µmol g-1  h-1 ) is superior to that of most reported MOF-based catalysts. In addition, the enhanced CO2 photoreduction ability is supported by density functional theory (DFT). This work illustrates the feasibility of realizing charge separation characteristics in MOF catalysts at the molecular level, and provides new insight for designing high-performance MOFs for artificial photosynthesis.

A Stable Triphenylamine-Based Zn(II)-MOF for Photocatalytic H2 Evolution and Photooxidative Carbon-Carbon Coupling Reaction

Efficient charge transfer has always been a challenge in heterogeneous MOF-based photoredox catalysis due to the poor electrical conductivity of the MOF photocatalyst, the toilless electron-hole recombination, and the uncontrollable host-guest interactions. Herein, a propeller-like tris(3'-carboxybiphenyl)amine (H₃TCBA) ligand was synthesized to fabricate a 3D Zn₃O cluster-based Zn(II)-MOF photocatalyst, Zn₃(TCBA)₂(μ₃-H₂O)H₂O (Zn-TCBA), which was applied to efficient photoreductive H₂ evolution and photooxidative aerobic cross-dehydrogenation coupling reactions of N-aryl-tetrahydroisoquinolines and nitromethane. In Zn-TCBA, the ingenious introduction of the meta-position benzene carboxylates on the triphenylamine motif not only promotes Zn-TCBA to exhibit a broad visible-light absorption with a maximum absorption edge of 480 nm but also causes special phenyl plane twists with dihedral angles of 27.8-45.8° through the coordination to Zn nodes. The semiconductor-like Zn clusters and the twisted TCBA^3- antenna with multidimensional π interaction sites facilitate photoinduced electron transfer to render Zn-TCBA a good photocatalytic H₂ evolution efficiency of 27.104 mmol·g^-1·h^-1 in the presence of [Co(bpy)₃]Cl₂ under visible-light illumination, surpassing many non-noble-metal MOF systems. Moreover, the positive enough excited-state potential of 2.03 V and the semiconductor-like characteristics of Zn-TCBA endow Zn-TCBA with double oxygen activation ability for photocatalytic oxidation of N-aryl-tetrahydroisoquinoline substrates with a yield up to 98.7% over 6 h. The durability of Zn-TCBA and the possible catalytic mechanisms were also investigated by a series of experiments including PXRD, IR, EPR, and fluorescence analyses.

Designing Heteroatom-Codoped Iron Metal-Organic Framework for Promotional Photoreduction of Carbon Dioxide to Ethylene

Rational engineering active sites and vantage defects of catalysts are promising but grand challenging task to enhance photoreduction CO₂ to high value-added C2 products. In this study, we designed an N,S-codoped Fe-based MIL-88B catalyst with well-defined bipyramidal hexagonal prism morphology via a facile and effective process, which was synthesized by addition of appropriate 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one (BIT) and acetic acid to the reaction solution. Under simulated solar irradiation, the designed catalyst exhibits high C₂ H₄ evolution yield of 17.7 μmol g^-1 ⋅h, which has been rarely achieved in photocatalytic CO₂ reduction process. The synergistic effect of Fe-N coordinated sites and reasonable defects in the N,S-codoped photocatalyst can accelerate the migration of photogenerated carriers, resulting in high electron density, and this in turn helps to facilitate the formation and dimerization of C-C coupling intermediates for C₂ H₄ effectively.

Amino-functionalized MIL-125(Ti) for photodenitrification of pyridine in fuels via coordination activation by unsaturated Ti4+ centers

Due to their explicit structure, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been supposed to be credible platforms to research the micro-mechanism of heterogeneous photocatalysis. In this study, amino-functionalized MOFs (MIL-125(Ti)-NH₂ (denoted as MTi), UiO-66(Zr)-NH₂ (denoted as UZr) and MIL-68(In)-NH₂ (denoted as MIn)) with three different metal centers were synthesized and applied for the denitrification of simulated fuels under visible light irradiation, during which pyridine was used as a typical nitrogen-containing compound. The results showed that MTi had the best activity among the above three MOFs, and the denitrogenation rate increased to 80% after 4 h of visible light irradiation. On the grounds of the theoretical calculation of pyridine adsorption and actual activity experiments, it can be presumed that the unsaturated Ti⁴⁺ metal centers should be the key active sites. Meanwhile, the XPS and in situ infrared results verified that the coordinatively unsaturated Ti⁴⁺ sites facilitate the activation of pyridine molecules through the surface -N⋯Ti- coordination species. The coordination-photocatalysis synergism promotes the efficiency of photocatalytic performance and the corresponding mechanism is proposed.
