Aerobic Cleavage of Alkenes and Alkynes into Carbonyl and Carboxyl Compounds

C=C Dissociative Imination of Styrenes by a Photogenerated Metallonitrene

Photolysis of a platinum(II) azide complex in the presence of styrenes enables C=C double bond cleavage upon dissociative olefin imination to aldimido (PtII-N=CHPh) and formimido (PtII-N=CH2) complexes as the main products. Spectroscopic and quantum chemical examinations support a mechanism that commences with the decay of the metallonitrene photoproduct (PtII-N) via bimolecular coupling and nitrogen loss as N2. The resulting platinum(I) complex initiates a radical chain mechanism via a dinuclear radical-bridged species (PtII-CH2CHPhN•-PtII) as a direct precursor to C-C scission. The preference for the PtI mediated route over styrene aziridination is attributed to the distinct nucleophilicity of the triplet metallonitrene.

Synergistic catalysis: cobalt-catalyzed cascade reaction for the oxidative cleavage of olefins to access esters

An efficient strategy for the oxidative cleavage of CC bonds in olefins to form esters with one or multiple carbon atoms less over heterogeneous cobalt/nitrogen-doped carbon catalyst with dioxygen as the oxidant was described. The protocol features a wide substrate range including the challenging inactive aliphatic and long-chain alkyl aryl olefins. The reactivity of the catalyst did not decrease after reused for seven times. Characterization and control experiments reveal that synergistic effects between the metallic Co nanoparticles and Co-Nx sites provide access to the excellent catalytic activity.

Water mediated redox-neutral cleavage of arylalkenes via photoredox catalysis

Cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds remains a challenging task in organic synthesis. Traditional methods for splitting Csp2=Csp2 bonds into two halves typically involve non-redox (metathesis) or oxidative (ozonolysis) mechanisms, limiting their synthetic potential. Disproportionative deconstruction of alkenes, which yields one reduced and one oxidized fragment, remains an unexplored area. In this study, we introduce a redox-neutral approach for deleting a Csp2 carbon unit from substituted arylalkenes, resulting in the formation of an arene (reduction) and a carbonyl product (oxidation). This transformation is believed to proceed through a mechanistic sequence involving visible-light-promoted anti-Markovnikov hydration, followed by photoredox cleavage of Csp3-Csp3 bond in the alcohol intermediate. A crucial consideration in this design is addressing the compatibility between the highly reactive oxy radical species in the latter step and the required hydrogen-atom-transfer (HAT) reagent for both steps. We found that ethyl thioglycolate serves as the optimal hydrogen-atom shuttle, offering remarkable chemoselectivity among multiple potential HAT events in this transformation. By using D2O, we successfully prepared dideuteromethylated (-CD2H) arenes with good heavy atom enrichment. This work presents a redox-neutral alternative for alkene deconstruction, with considerable potential in late-stage modification of complex molecules.

Recent Advances in Photoinduced Oxidative Cleavage of Alkenes

Oxidative cleavage of alkenes leading to valuable carbonyl derivatives is a fundamental transformation in synthetic chemistry. In particular, ozonolysis is the mainstream method for the oxidative cleavage of alkenes that has been widely implemented in the synthesis of natural products and pharmaceutically relevant compounds. However, due to the toxicity and explosive nature of ozone, alternative approaches employing transition metals and enzymes in the presence of oxygen and/or strong oxidants have been developed. These protocols are often conducted under harsh reaction conditions that limit the substrate scope. Photochemical approaches can provide milder and more practical alternatives for this synthetically useful transformation. In this review, we outline recent visible-light-promoted oxidative cleavage reactions that involve photocatalytic activation of oxygen via electron transfer and energy transfer. Also, an emerging field featuring visible-light-promoted oxidative cleavage under anaerobic conditions is discussed. The methods highlighted in this review represent a transformative step toward more sustainable and efficient strategies for the oxidative cleavage of alkenes.

Synthesis of unsymmetrical ketones via dual catalysed cross-coupling of α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids with aryldiazonium salts

A visible light-enabled synthesis of unsymmetrical ketones has been accomplished by the cross-coupling of α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids and aryldiazonium salts embracing a synergistic eosin Y and Co(OAc)2·4H2O catalysis. The reaction involves decarboxylative aerobic CC bond cleavage, and is endowed with the creation of new C-C and C-O bonds with good substrate scope.

Carbon-Carbon Bond Cleavage for Late-Stage Functionalization

Late-stage functionalization (LSF) introduces functional group or structural modification at the final stage of the synthesis of natural products, drugs, and complex compounds. It is anticipated that late-stage functionalization would improve drug discovery's effectiveness and efficiency and hasten the creation of various chemical libraries. Consequently, late-stage functionalization of natural products is a productive technique to produce natural product derivatives, which significantly impacts chemical biology and drug development. Carbon-carbon bonds make up the fundamental framework of organic molecules. Compared with the carbon-carbon bond construction, the carbon-carbon bond activation can directly enable molecular editing (deletion, insertion, or modification of atoms or groups of atoms) and provide a more efficient and accurate synthetic strategy. However, the efficient and selective activation of unstrained carbon-carbon bonds is still one of the most challenging projects in organic synthesis. This review encompasses the strategies employed in recent years for carbon-carbon bond cleavage by explicitly focusing on their applicability in late-stage functionalization. This review expands the current discourse on carbon-carbon bond cleavage in late-stage functionalization reactions by providing a comprehensive overview of the selective cleavage of various types of carbon-carbon bonds. This includes C-C(sp), C-C(sp2), and C-C(sp3) single bonds; carbon-carbon double bonds; and carbon-carbon triple bonds, with a focus on catalysis by transition metals or organocatalysts. Additionally, specific topics, such as ring-opening processes involving carbon-carbon bond cleavage in three-, four-, five-, and six-membered rings, are discussed, and exemplar applications of these techniques are showcased in the context of complex bioactive molecules or drug discovery. This review aims to shed light on recent advancements in the field and propose potential avenues for future research in the realm of late-stage carbon-carbon bond functionalization.

Donor-Acceptor Covalent Organic Frameworks as a Heterogeneous Photoredox Catalyst for Scissoring Alkenes to Carbonyl Constituents

The conversion of alkenes to carbonyl constituents via the cleavage of the C═C bond is unique due to its biological and pharmacological significance. Though a number of oxidative C═C cleavage protocols have been demonstrated for terminal and electron-rich alkene systems, none of them were optimized for electron-deficient and conjugated alkenes. In this work, a covalent organic framework containing triphenylamine and triazine units was revealed to cleave the C═C bond of alkenes under very mild conditions involving visible light irradiation due to its photoredox property. The alkenes can be conveniently broken across the double bond to their constituent carbonyl derivatives on light irradiation in the presence of air and the covalent organic framework photocatalyst. This protocol is applicable for a wide range of alkenes in an aqueous acetonitrile medium with high functional group tolerance and regioselectivity. Though the electron-deficient alkenes required tetramethylethylene diamine as a sacrificial donor, the electron-rich alkenes do not demand any additives.

Iron-Promoted Catalytic Activity of Selenium Endowing the Aerobic Oxidative Cracking Reaction of Alkenes

Oxidative cracking of alkenes is a significant process in industry. In this work, it was found that catalyzed by Se/Fe via hybrid mechanisms, the carbon-carbon double bond in alkenes can break to produce carbonyls under mild conditions. Since O2 can be used as a partial oxidant, the employed H2O2 amount can be reduced (90 mol % vs 250 mol %) to avoid the peroxide residues, making the process even safer for operation.

Oxidative Cleavage and Fluoromethylthiolation of C═C Bonds: A General Route toward Mono-, Di-, and Trifluoromethylthioesters from Alkenes

A novel oxidative cleavage and fluoromethylthiolation reaction of C═C bonds has been developed that represents the first and general method for the preparation of mono-, di-, and trifluoromethylthioesters from alkenes. The protocol features excellent product selectivity and substrate suitability. Various observations suggested that the protocol proceeded via a two-step radical process and that aldehyde was the key intermediate. What's more meaningful is that this route provides a new direction for converting alkenes into higher-value-added carbonyl-containing chemicals.

Oxidative Cleavage and Ammoxidation of Unsaturated Hydrocarbons via Heterogeneous Auto-Tandem Catalysis

The oxidative cleavage and functionalization of unsaturated C-C bonds are important processes for synthesis of carbonyl compounds from hydrocarbon feedstocks, yet there has been no report of direct amidation of unsaturated hydrocarbons via an oxidative cleavage of unsaturated C-C bonds with molecular oxygen as an environmentally benign oxidant. Herein, for the first time, we describe a manganese oxide-catalyzed auto-tandem catalysis strategy that enables direct synthesis of amides from unsaturated hydrocarbons by coupling oxidative cleavage with amidation. With oxygen as an oxidant and ammonia as a nitrogen source, a wide range of structurally diverse mono- and multisubstituted activated and unactivated alkenes or alkynes can smoothly undergo unsaturated C-C bond cleavage to deliver one- or multiple-carbon shorter amides. Moreover, a slight modification of the reaction conditions also allows for the direct synthesis of sterically hindered nitriles from alkenes or alkynes. This protocol features excellent functional group tolerance, a broad substrate scope, flexible late-stage functionalization, facile scalability, and a cost-effective and recyclable catalyst. Detailed characterizations reveal that the high activity and selectivity of the manganese oxides are attributed to the large specific surface area, abundant oxygen vacancies, better reducibility, and moderate acid sites. Mechanistic studies and density functional theory calculations indicate that the reaction proceeds through divergent pathways depending on the structure of substrates.

New iron(iii) complex of bis-bidentate-anchored diacyl resorcinol on a Fe3O4 nanomagnet: C-H bond oxygenation, oxidative cleavage of alkenes and benzoxazole synthesis

We have synthesized a novel, bis-bidentate, covalently anchored, 4,6-diacetyl resorcinol (DAR) ligand on silica-coated magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and the corresponding bi-metallic iron(iii) complex (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-APTESFe₂L^DAR). Both the chemical nature and the structure of the homogeneously heterogenized catalyst were investigated using physico-chemical techniques. The results obtained by XPS, XRD, FT-IR, TGA, VSM, SEM, TEM, EDX, ICP and AAS revealed a magnetic core, a silica layer and the grafting of a binuclear iron complex on the Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-APTES, as well as its thermodynamic stability. Despite many reports of metal complexes on different supports, there are no reports of anchored, bi-metallic complexes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a bi-active site catalyst covalently attached to a support. This study focuses on the catalytic activity of an as-synthesized, bi-active site catalyst for C-H bond oxygenation, the oxidative cleavage of alkenes, and the multicomponent, one-pot synthesis of benzoxazole derivatives with excellent yields from readily available starting materials. Our results indicated high conversion rates and selectivity under mild reaction conditions and simple separation using a magnetic field. The leaching and recyclability tests of the catalyst were investigated for the above processes, which indicated that all the reactions proceed via a heterogeneous pathway and that the catalyst is recyclable without any tangible loss in catalytic activity for at least 8, 5 and 5 cycles for C-H bond oxygenation, C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond cleavage and benzoxazole synthesis, respectively.

Electrochemical Oxidative Cleavage of Alkynes to Carboxylic Acids

A sustainable method for converting terminal alkynes into their corresponding carboxylic acids is reported using synthetic electrolysis in an undivided cell at room temperature. This protocol, avoiding transition metal catalysis and stoichiometric chemical oxidants, tolerates a variety of aryl, heteroaryl, and alkyl akynes. Preliminary mechanistic studies demonstrate that sodium nitrite serves a triple role as the electrolyte, nitryl radical precursor, and a nitrosating reagent.

Photocatalyzed oxidative cleavage of CC bond to carbonyl compounds by a recyclable homogeneous carbon nitride semiconductor/aqueous system

The development of methods based on direct oxidative cleavage of alkynes to carbonyls is an extremely challenging task. In this work, we describe a UV light-driven, potassium/sodium poly(heptazine imide) (K,Na-PHI)-catalyzed protocol for the selective oxidative cleavage of alkynes to acids under an O₂ atmosphere using water as a solvent. Various aromatic alkynes can be selectively cleaved to afford aromatic acids in good to high yield under clean, mild conditions. Mechanistic investigation indicates that the photogenerated hydroxyl radicals in situ act as green oxidation active species. Moreover, this protocol could be further developed as a sequential oxidative cleavage/esterification process for the preparation of aryl esters. Notably, the KNaPHI-II/water catalyst system could be used several times without significant loss of activity.

Photoexcited Nitroarenes for the Oxidative Cleavage of Alkenes

The oxidative cleavage of alkenes is an integral process that converts feedstock materials into high-value synthetic intermediates^1,2,3. The most viable method to achieve this in one chemical step is with ozone^4,5,6,7, which however poses technical and safety challenges owing to the explosive nature of ozonolysis products^8,9. Herein, we disclose an alternative approach to achieve oxidative cleavage of alkenes using nitroarenes and purple light irradiation. We demonstrate that photoexcited nitroarenes are effective ozone surrogates that undergo facile radical [3+2] cycloaddition with alkenes. The resulting "N-doped" ozonides are safe to handle and lead to the corresponding carbonyl products under mild hydrolytic conditions. These features have enabled the controlled cleavage of all types of alkenes in the presence of a broad array of commonly used organic functionalities. Furthermore, by harnessing electronic, steric, and mediated polar effects, the structural and functional diversity of nitroarenes has provided a modular platform to obtain site-selectivity in substrates containing more than one alkene.

Copper-Catalyzed Oxidative C-C Bond Cleavage of Alkyl-(Hetero)arenes Enabling Direct Access to Nitriles

The cleavage and functionalization of C-C bonds has emerged as a powerful tool for discovery of new transformations. Herein, we report a protocol that enables direct synthesis of nitriles via copper-catalyzed oxidative cleavage and cyanation of C-C bonds in a wide variety of multicarbon alkyl-substituted (hetero)arenes. Detailed mechanistic studies reveal that a tandem oxidative process is involved in this transformation.

Scalable Electrochemical Aerobic Oxygenation of Indoles to Isatins without Electron Transfer Mediators by Merging with an Oxygen Reduction Reaction

An approach to electrochemical oxygenation of indoles leading to isatins was developed by merging with a complementary cathode oxygen reduction reaction. The features of this green protocol include the use of molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant, it being free of an electron transfer mediator, and gram-scale preparation. Mechanistic studies suggested a radical process, and the two oxygen atoms in the isatins were both most likely from molecular oxygen. A detailed mechanism of the reaction utilizing density functional theory calculations was elucidated.

Photochemical Organocatalytic Aerobic Cleavage of C═C Bonds Enabled by Charge-Transfer Complex Formation

A novel visible-light-driven organocatalytic protocol to access aerobic oxidative cleavage of olefins, promoted by sodium benzene sulfinate, is described herein. An array of alkenes smoothly delivered the corresponding aldehydes and ketones under transition-metal-free conditions. Notably, α-halo-substituted styrenes proceeded with photoinduced oxidation to finally afford α-halo-acetophenones with halogen migration. Crucial to this oxidation was the formation of charge-transfer complexes between sodium benzene sulfinate with molecular O₂ to ultimately deliver the carbonyl products.

Cu-catalyzed, Mn-mediated propargylation and allenylation of aldehydes with propargyl bromides

A simple, practical, and high chemo-selective method for the synthesis of propargyl alcohol and allenyl alcohols via Cu-catalyzed, Mn-mediated propargylation and allenylation of aldehydes with propargyl bromides has been established. When 3-bromo-1-propyne was conducted under the standard condition, the aldehydes were transformed to the corresponding propargylation products completely, while when 1-bromo-2-pentyne was used, allenic alcohol was the only product. Variety of homopropargyl alcohols and allenyl alcohols were obtained in high yields and the reaction is compatible with broad substrate scopes. In addition, the large-scale reaction could also be proceeded smoothly indicating the potential synthetic applications of this transformation.

Electrochemical Aerobic Oxidative Cleavage of (sp3)C-C(sp3)/H Bonds in Alkylarenes

An electrochemistry-promoted oxidative cleavage of (sp³)C-C(sp³)/H bonds in alkylarenes was developed. Various aryl alkanes can be smoothly converted into ketones/aldehydes under aerobic conditions using a user-friendly undivided cell setup. The features of air as oxidant, scalability, and mild conditions make them attractive in synthetic organic chemistry.

PhIO-Mediated Oxidative C═C Bond Cleavage and Reassembly toward Highly Functionalized Oxazolones

An efficient PhIO-mediated oxidative C═C bond cleavage and reassembly of enaminone toward oxazolone with high regioselectivity has been reported. DFT calculations revealed that the reaction proceeded through an oxygen atom transfer, C═C bond cleavage, alkylthio migration, and reassembly cascade. This strategy is highlighted by high atom and step economy with formation of five bonds in one pot and generation of a high-valued oxazolone skeleton under mild conditions.

BF3·OEt2 catalyzed chemoselective CC bond cleavage of α,β-enones: an unexpected synthesis of 3-alkylated oxindoles and spiro-indolooxiranes

A BF₃·OEt₂ catalyzed highly chemoselective formal CC double bond cleavage reaction of α,β-enones with diazoamides for the synthesis of 3-alkylated oxindoles is developed. Boron trifluoride etherate is found to be an effective catalyst for the chemoselective C_α-C_β cleavage of enones to obtain 3-alkylated oxindoles. The product formation indicates a selective β-carbon elimination pathway of α,β-enones using the inexpensive BF₃·OEt₂ as a catalyst, transition metal-free conditions, an open-air environment, good functional tolerance and broad substrate scope. The synthetic utility of this protocol is highlighted by synthesizing spiro-indolooxiranes.

Visible-Light-Driven Oxidative Cleavage of Alkenes Using Water-Soluble CdSe Quantum Dots

The oxidative cleavage of C=C bonds is an important chemical reaction, which is a popular reaction in the photocatalytic field. However, high catalyst-loading and low turnover number (TON) are general shortcomings in reported visible-light-driven reactions. Herein, the direct oxidative cleavage of C=C bonds through water-soluble CdSe quantum dots (QDs) is described under visible-light irradiation at room temperature with high TON (up to 3.7×10⁴ ). Under the same conditions, water-soluble CdSe QDs could also oxidize sulfides to sulfoxides with 51-84 % yields and TONs up to 3.4×10⁴ . The key features of this photocatalytic protocol include high TONs, wide substrates scope, low catalyst loadings, simple and mild reaction conditions, and molecular O₂ as the oxidant.

A computational study of the reaction mechanism of 2,2-azobis(isobutyronitrile)-initiated oxidative cleavage of geminal alkenes

A computational study of 2,2-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN)-initiated aerobic oxidative cleavage of alkenes is carried out employing density functional theory (DFT) and high-level coupled-cluster methods, such as coupled-cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples [CCSD(T)]. Our computations show that the barriers for the formation of dioxetane derivatives suggested by Xu and co-workers (J. Org. Chem., 2014, 79, 7220-7225) for the reaction mechanism of aerobic oxidative cleavage of alkenes are computed to be higher than 65 kcal mol^-1. This barrier is relatively high under the reaction conditions. Our results for the Xu mechanism indicate that the reaction does not proceed via the formation of a dioxetane ring under the reaction conditions. Our results demonstrate that the reaction of aerobic oxidative cleavage of geminal alkenes in the presence of AIBN is initiated by the peroxyl radical 9, contrary to the isobutyronitrile radical 2. Our results show that the 2-(2-hydroxyl-1,1-diarylethoxy)-2-methylpropanenitrile radical (15) does not appear throughout the reaction scheme and the reaction progresses over the 2-(2-hydroxyl-2,2-diarylethoxy)-2-methylpropanenitrile radical (13) rather than the 2-(2-hydroxyl-1,1-diarylethoxy)-2-methylpropanenitrile radical (15). Our results are in agreement with the experimental results for the aerobic oxidative cleavage of the geminal disubstituted alkenes. Our results also demonstrate that the epoxide derivatives can be formed as an intermediate under the reaction conditions. This reaction is not applicable for pyridine derivatives due to the conversion of vinylpyridine derivatives to N-oxide derivatives.

1,2-Dibutoxyethane-Promoted Oxidative Cleavage of Olefins into Carboxylic Acids Using O2 Under Clean Conditions

Herein, we report the first example of an effective and green approach for the oxidative cleavage of olefins to carboxylic acids using a 1,2-dibutoxyethane/O₂ system under clean conditions. This novel oxidation system also has excellent functional-group tolerance and is applicable for large-scale synthesis. The target products were prepared in good to excellent yields by a one-pot sequential transformation without an external initiator, catalyst, and additive.

Oxidative Cleavage of Alkenes by O2 with a Non-Heme Manganese Catalyst

The oxidative cleavage of C=C double bonds with molecular oxygen to produce carbonyl compounds is an important transformation in chemical and pharmaceutical synthesis. In nature, enzymes containing the first-row transition metals, particularly heme and non-heme iron-dependent enzymes, readily activate O₂ and oxidatively cleave C=C bonds with exquisite precision under ambient conditions. The reaction remains challenging for synthetic chemists, however. There are only a small number of known synthetic metal catalysts that allow for the oxidative cleavage of alkenes at an atmospheric pressure of O₂, with very few known to catalyze the cleavage of nonactivated alkenes. In this work, we describe a light-driven, Mn-catalyzed protocol for the selective oxidation of alkenes to carbonyls under 1 atm of O₂. For the first time, aromatic as well as various nonactivated aliphatic alkenes could be oxidized to afford ketones and aldehydes under clean, mild conditions with a first row, biorelevant metal catalyst. Moreover, the protocol shows a very good functional group tolerance. Mechanistic investigation suggests that Mn–oxo species, including an asymmetric, mixed-valent bis(μ-oxo)-Mn(III,IV) complex, are involved in the oxidation, and the solvent methanol participates in O₂ activation that leads to the formation of the oxo species.

Thiol-initiated photocatalytic oxidative cleavage of the CC bond in olefins and its extension to direct production of acetals from olefins

Oxidative cleavage of a broad scope of olefins is realized over ZnIn₂S₄ under visible light, using air as oxidant and thiol as initiator. Coupled with the condensation between aldehydes/ketones and alcohols, this strategy can be used to yield acetals directly from olefins.

Selective Dealkenylative Functionalization of Styrenes via C-C Bond Cleavage

As a readily available feedstock, styrene with about 25 million tons of global annual production serves as an important building block and organic synthon for the synthesis of fine chemicals, polystyrene plastics, and elastomers. Thus, in the past decades, many direct transformations of this costless styrene feedstock were disclosed for the preparation of high-value chemicals, which to date, generally performed on the functionalization of styrenes through the allylic C-H bond, C(sp²)-H bond, or the C=C double bond cleavage. However, the dealkenylative functionalization of styrenes via the direct C-C single bond cleavage is so far challenging and still unknown. Herein, we report the novel and efficient C-C amination and hydroxylation reactions of styrenes for the synthesis of valuable aryl amines and phenols via the site-selective C(Ar)-C(alkenyl) single bond cleavage. This chemistry unlocks the new transformation and application of the styrene feedstock and provides an efficient protocol for the late-stage modification of substituted styrenes with the site-directed dealkenylative amination and hydroxylation.

Arylacetylenes as two-carbon synthons: synthesis of eight-membered rings via C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C bond cleavage

The first synthesis of eight-membered N-containing heterocycles by oxidative bicyclization/ring extension of arylacetylenes and aryl amines has been achieved. This protocol uses arylacetylene as an unusual two-carbon synthon by incorporating the two parts of the cracked C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C bond into the final product, which provides a new method for using arylacetylenes as two-carbon synthons and further enriches C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C bond cleavage methodology. Moreover, this multi-component reaction can provide diverse fused elegant eight-membered N-heterocycles under mild conditions with wide substrate scopes.

Oxidation of Long-Chain α-Olefins Using Environmentally-Friendly Oxidants

Studies on the oxidation of α-olefins via the two-stage method are presented. The new method consisted of oxidizing C30+ α-olefins with hydrogen peroxide (2 equiv.) and subsequent oxidation with oxygen. Products with high acid numbers (29–82 mgKOH/g) and saponification numbers (64–140 mgKOH/g) were obtained and compared with products obtained using only hydrogen peroxide or oxygen. It was demonstrated that H₂O₂ can be partially replaced by oxygen in the oxidative cleavage reaction of α-olefins. N-hydroxyphthalimide in combination with Co(acac)₂ demonstrated high activity in the oxidation stage using oxygen.

Computational Study for the Reaction Mechanism of N-Hydroxyphthalimide-Catalyzed Oxidative Cleavage of Alkenes

A computational study of N-hydroxyphthalimide-catalyzed aerobic oxidative cleavage of alkenes is carried out employing density functional theory and high-level coupled-cluster methods, such as coupled-cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples [CCSD(T)]. Our results demonstrate that the reaction proceeds through the alkoxyl radicals, as opposed to the mechanism suggested by Jiao and co-workers (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 4158-4161), in which the reaction proceeds via formation of the dioxetane ring. The barriers for the formation of dioxetane derivatives are computed to be higher than 50 kcal mol^-1, while the barriers for the formation of alkoxyl radicals are as low as 13 kcal mol^-1. Our results also demonstrate that epoxide derivatives can be formed as intermediates or byproducts under the reaction conditions.

Amphiphilic Carbon Quantum Dots as a Bridge to a Pseudohomogeneous Catalyst for Selective Oxidative Cracking of Alkenes to Aldehydes: A Nonmetallic Oxidation System

The oxidative cleavage of alkenes to the corresponding aldehydes using new amphiphilic carbon quantum dots (A-CQDs) as a pseudohomogeneous carbocatalyst is achieved for the first time through green and sustainable chemical processes. In this work, we successfully design a recyclable pseudohomogeneous catalyst based on A-CQDs, which is decorated with 1-aminopropyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride and stearic acid. The functionalization is conducted to introduce a hydrophilic/hydrophobic functionality on the surface of the catalyst to achieve high catalyst availability in polar and nonpolar media with the green goal of eliminating organic (co)solvents and additives. This amphiphilic carbocatalyst provides high mass transferability to the biphasic system, which is beneficial to promoting the oxidative cracking of a variety of olefins into corresponding aldehydes with a substrate/A-CQD ratio of 150. Around 87% of the substrates are converted to the related aldehydes using the carbocatalyst in the presence of H₂O₂, in pure water, without using a phase-transfer catalyst or any additives and organic solvents, which is comparable with the current metal-based cleavage systems. Surprisingly, A-CQDs exhibit high catalytic activity for the scission of electron-deficient C═C bond of coumarin derivatives, accompanied by the cleavage of C-O bonds to produce the corresponding salicylaldehyde derivatives without overoxidation to acid. As a brief conclusion, A-CQDs exhibit high conversion efficiency without significant loss of activity even after six catalytic cycles. The conversion of alkenes into aldehydes is fast and high-throughput without overoxidation to acids and is accompanied by excellent solubility and stability in various solvents. Moreover, the product and the catalyst are recoverable from the reaction medium by simple extraction. So, this pseudohomogeneous carbocatalyst promises new horizons in imminent "catalytic age". All in all, this paper provides a significant and novel advancement in carbocatalyst chemistry.

Oxidation of Alkynyl Boronates to Carboxylic Acids, Esters, and Amides

A general efficient protocol was developed for the synthesis of carboxylic acids, esters, and amides through oxidation of alkynyl boronates, generated directly from terminal alkynes. This protocol represents the first example of C(sp)-B bond oxidation. This approach displays a broad substrate scope, including aryl and alkyl alkynes, and exhibits excellent functional group tolerance. Water, primary and secondary alcohols, and amines are suitable nucleophiles for this transformation. Notably, amino acids and peptides can be used as nucleophiles, providing an efficient method for the synthesis and modification of peptides. The practicability of this methodology was further highlighted by the preparation of pharmaceutical molecules.
