Ortho-Selective C–H Borylation of Aromatic Ethers with Pinacol-borane by Organo Rare-Earth Catalysts

A Recyclable Inorganic Lanthanide Cluster Catalyst for Chemoselective Aerobic Oxidation of Thiols

Optimizing lanthanide catalyst performance with organic ligands often encounters significant challenges, including susceptibility to water or oxygen and complex synthesis pathways. To address these issues, our research focuses on developing inorganic lanthanide clusters with enhanced stability and functionality. In this study, we introduce the [Sm6O(OH)8(H2O)24]I8(H2O)8 cluster (Sm-OC) as a sustainable and efficient catalyst for the aerobic oxidation of thiols under heating conditions. The Sm-OC catalyst demonstrated remarkable stability, outstanding recyclability, and excellent chemoselectivity across a diverse range of functional groups in 38 different tests. Notably, it enables efficient unsymmetrical disulfide synthesis and prevents the formation of over-oxidized by-products, highlighting its superior performance. This Sm-OC catalyst provides a practical and robust tool for the precise construction of versatile disulfides, thus establishing a template for the broader use of lanthanide clusters in organic synthesis.

Synthesis of Alkyl and Aryl Boronate Esters via CeO2-Catalyzed Borylation of Alkyl and Aryl Electrophiles Including Alkyl Chlorides

A recyclable protocol using a CeO2-nanorod catalyst for borylation of alkyl halides with B2pin2 (pin = OCMe2CMe2O) is reported. A wide range of synthetically useful alkyl boronate esters are readily obtained from primary and secondary alkyl electrophiles, including unactivated alkyl chlorides, demonstrating broad utility and functional group tolerance. Preliminary investigation revealed an involvement of in situ formed catalytically active boryl species. The catalyst can be reused for up to six runs without appreciable loss in activity. In addition, we have demonstrated the use of this recyclable catalyst for the borylation of aryl halides with B2pin2, providing valuable aryl boronate esters under neat conditions.

Enantioselective Synthesis of 1-Aminoindanes via [3 + 2] Annulation of Aldimines with Alkenes by Scandium-Catalyzed C-H Activation

Multisubstituted chiral 1-aminoindanes are important components in many pharmaceuticals and bioactive molecules. Therefore, the development of efficient and selective methods for the synthesis of chiral 1-aminoindanes is of great interest and importance. In principle, the asymmetric [3 + 2] annulation of aldimines with alkenes through C-H activation is the most atom-efficient and straightforward route for the construction of chiral 1-aminoindanes, but such a transformation has remained undeveloped to date probably due to the lack of suitable catalysts. Herein, we report for the first time the enantioselective [3 + 2] annulation of a wide range of aromatic aldimines and alkenes via ortho-C(sp2)-H activation by chiral half-sandwich scandium catalysts, which provides a straightforward route for the synthesis of multisubstituted chiral 1-aminoindanes. This protocol features 100% atom-efficiency, broad functional group compatibility, and high regio-, diastereo-, and enantioselectivity (up to >19:1 dr and 99:1 er). Remarkably, by fine-tuning the sterics of the chiral ligand around the catalyst metal center, the diastereodivergent asymmetric [3 + 2] annulation of aldimines and styrenes has been achieved with a high level of diastereo- and enantioselectivity, offering an efficient method for the synthesis of both the trans and cis diastereomers of a novel class of chiral 1-aminoindane derivatives containing two contiguous stereocenters from the same set of starting materials. Moreover, the asymmetric [3 + 2] annulation of aldimines with aliphatic α-olefins, norbornene, and 1,3-dienes has also been achieved.

Regioselective C-H alkylation of anisoles with olefins by cationic imidazolin-2-iminato scandium(iii) alkyl complexes

A new type of rare-earth alkyl complexes supported by monoanionic imidazolin-2-iminato ligands were synthesised and structurally characterised by X-ray diffraction and NMR analyses. The utility of these imidazolin-2-iminato rare-earth alkyl complexes in organic synthesis was demonstrated by their performance in highly regioselective C-H alkylation of anisoles with olefins. With as low as 0.5 mol% catalyst loading, various anisole derivatives without ortho-substitution or 2-methyl substituted anisoles reacted with several alkenes under mild conditions, producing the corresponding ortho-Csp2-H and benzylic Csp3-H alkylation products in high yield (56 examples, 16-99% yields). Control experiments revealed that rare-earth ions, ancillary imidazolin-2-iminato ligands, and basic ligands were crucial for the above transformations. Based on deuterium-labelling experiments, reaction kinetic studies, and theoretical calculations, a possible catalytic cycle was provided to elucidate the reaction mechanism.

Metal-catalysed C-H bond activation and borylation

Transition metal-catalysed direct borylation of hydrocarbons via C-H bond activation has received a remarkable level of attention as a popular reaction in the synthesis of organoboron compounds owing to their synthetic versatility. While controlling the site-selectivity was one of the most challenging issues in these C-H borylation reactions, enormous efforts of several research groups proved instrumental in dealing with selectivity issues that presently reached an impressive level for both proximal and distal C-H bond borylation reactions. For example, in the case of ortho C-H bond borylation reactions, innovative methodologies have been developed either by the modification of the directing groups attached with the substrates or by creating new catalytic systems via the design of new ligand frameworks. Whereas meta and para selective C-H borylations remained a formidable challenge, numerous innovative concepts have been developed within a very short period of time by the development of new catalytic systems with the employment of various noncovalent interactions. Moreover, significant advancements have occurred for aliphatic C(sp³)-H borylations as well as enantioselective borylations. In this review article, we aim to discuss and summarize the different approaches and findings related to the development of directed proximal ortho, distal meta/para, aliphatic (racemic and enantioselective) borylation reactions since 2014. Additionally, considering the C-H borylation reaction as one of the most important mainstream reactions, various applications of this C-H borylation reaction toward the synthesis of natural products, therapeutics, and applications in materials chemistry will be summarized in the last part of this review article.

Yttrium-Catalyzed ortho-Selective C-H Borylation of Pyridines with Pinacolborane

This work reports a site-selective C-H borylation of pyridines at the ortho-position with pinacolborane enabled by an yttrocene catalyst. The reaction provides a new family of 2-pyridyl boronates with a broad substrate scope and high atom efficiency. The resultant boronates were able to undergo a variety of transformations, e.g., oxidation, Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, Chan-Lam amination and etherification. Catalytic intermediates, including ortho-C-H metalated and borylated complexes, were isolated from stoichiometric experiments and confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Triazene as the Directing Group Achieving Highly Ortho-Selective Diborylation and Sequential Functionalization

This study describes a regioselective ortho,ortho'-diborylation of aromatic triazenes catalyzed by [Ir(OMe)(cod)]₂ in near-quantitative yields without an additional ligand. Aromatic triazenes act as both substrates and ligands. The X-ray structures of 2a and 2p indicate that the monoborylation products could promote the occurrence of diborylation. The synthesized triazene-substituted diboronate esters could undergo a variety of transformations including directing group removal. One-pot sequential modification provides a short entry to densely functionalized arenes.

Supported Lanthanum Borohydride Catalyzes CH Borylation Inside Zeolite Micropores

The zeolite‐supported lanthanide La(BH₄)_x‐HY₃₀ catalyzes C−H borylation of benzene with pinacolborane (HBpin), providing a complementary approach to precious, late transition metal‐catalyzed borylations. The reactive catalytic species are generated from La grafted at the Brønsted acid sites (BAS) in micropores of the zeolite, whereas silanoate‐ and aluminoate‐grafted sites are inactive under the reaction conditions. During typical catalytic borylations, conversion to phenyl pinacolborane (PhBpin) is zero‐order in HBpin concentration. A turnover number (TON) of 167 is accessed by capping external silanols, selectively grafting at BAS sites, and adding HBpin slowly to the reaction.

Recent progress in rare-earth metal-catalyzed sp2 and sp3 C–H functionalization to construct C–C and C–heteroelement bonds

The review presents rare-earth metal-catalyzed C(sp2/sp3)–H functionalization accessing C–C/C–heteroatom bonds and olefin (co)polymerization, highlighting substrate scope, mechanistic realization, and origin of site-, enantio-/diastereo-selectivity.

Regio- and Diastereoselective [3+2] Annulation of Aliphatic Aldimines with Alkenes by Scandium-Catalyzed β-C(sp3 )-H Activation

Here we report for the first time the regio- and diastereoselective [3+2] annulation of a wide range of aliphatic aldimines with alkenes via the activation of an unactivated β-C(sp³ )-H bond by half-sandwich scandium catalysts. This protocol offers a straightforward and atom-efficient route for the synthesis of a new family of multi-substituted aminocyclopentane derivatives from easily accessible aliphatic aldimines and alkenes. The annulation of aldimines with styrenes exclusively afforded the 5-aryl-trans-substituted 1-aminocyclopentane derivatives with excellent diastereoselectivity through the 2,1-insertion of a styrene unit. The annulation of aldimines with aliphatic alkenes selectively gave the 4-alkyl-trans-substituted 1-aminocyclopentane products in a 1,2-insertion fashion. A catalytic amount of an appropriate amine such as adamantylamine (AdNH₂ ) or dibenzylamine (Bn₂ NH) showed significant effects on the catalyst activity and stereoselectivity.

Ir-catalyzed proximal and distal C-H borylation of arenes

Over the past two decades, the C-H bond activation and functionalization reaction has been known as a prevailing method for the construction of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds using various transition metal catalysts. In this context, the iridium-catalyzed C-H bond activation and borylation reaction is one of the most valued methods. However, the major challenge in these borylation reactions is how to control the proximal (ortho) and distal (meta and para) selectivity. Interestingly, while so many approaches are now available for the proximal ortho selective borylation of arenes, borylation at the distal meta and or para position of arenes remains still challenging. Only a few approaches have been reported so far in the literature employing iridium catalysis. In this feature article, we have demonstrated some of the recent discoveries from our laboratories for the proximal (ortho) and distal (meta and para) selective borylation reactions. Moreover, some of the recent catalyst engineering discoveries for the selective proximal ortho borylation reactions for a diverse class of substrates have also been discussed. The discussion part of several other pioneering reports is limited due to the lack of scope of this feature article.

Reduction of Amides to Amines with Pinacolborane Catalyzed by Heterogeneous Lanthanum Catalyst La(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)3@SBA-15

Hydroboration of amides is a useful synthetic strategy to access the corresponding amines. In this contribution, it was found that the supported lanthanum benzyl material La(CH₂C₆H₄NMe₂-o)₃@SBA-15 was highly active for the hydroboration of primary, secondary, and tertiary amides to amines with pinacolborane. These reactions selectively produced target amines and showed good tolerance for functional groups such as -NO₂, -halogen, and -CN, as well as heteroatoms such as S and O. This reduction procedure exhibited the recyclable and reusable property of heterogeneous catalysts and was applicable to gram-scale synthesis. The reaction mechanisms were proposed based on some control experiments and the previous literature. This is the first example of hydroborative reduction of amides to amines mediated by heterogeneous catalysts.

Remarkably Efficient Iridium Catalysts for Directed C(sp2)-H and C(sp3)-H Borylation of Diverse Classes of Substrates

Here we describe the discovery of a new class of C-H borylation catalysts and their use for regioselective C-H borylation of aromatic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic systems. The new catalysts have Ir-C(thienyl) or Ir-C(furyl) anionic ligands instead of the diamine-type neutral chelating ligands used in the standard C-H borylation conditions. It is reported that the employment of these newly discovered catalysts show excellent reactivity and ortho-selectivity for diverse classes of aromatic substrates with high isolated yields. Moreover, the catalysts proved to be efficient for a wide number of aliphatic substrates for selective C(sp³)-H bond borylations. Heterocyclic molecules are selectively borylated using the inherently elevated reactivity of the C-H bonds. A number of late-stage C-H functionalization have been described using the same catalysts. Furthermore, we show that one of the catalysts could be used even in open air for the C(sp²)-H and C(sp³)-H borylations enabling the method more general. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the active catalytic intermediate is the Ir(bis)boryl complex, and the attached ligand acts as bidentate ligand. Collectively, this study underlines the discovery of new class of C-H borylation catalysts that should find wide application in the context of C-H functionalization chemistry.

Metal-Free Directed C-H Borylation of Pyrroles

Robust strategies to enable the rapid construction of complex organoboronates in selective, practical, low-cost, and environmentally friendly modes remain conspicuously underdeveloped. Here, we develop a general strategy for the site-selective C-H borylation of pyrroles by using only BBr₃ directed by pivaloyl groups, avoiding the use of any metal. The site-selectivity is generally dominated by chelation and electronic effects, thus forming diverse C2-borylated pyrroles against the steric effect. The formed products can readily engage in downstream transformations, enabling a step-economic process to access drugs such as Lipitor. DFT calculations (wB97X-D) demonstrate the preferred positional selectivity of this reaction.

La(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)3-catalyzed reduction of esters to alcohols with pinacolborane

La(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)3/HBpin is an efficient catalytic system for the hydroborative reduction of esters to alcohols under mild conditions.

Regiodivergent C-H Alkylation of Quinolines with Alkenes by Half-Sandwich Rare-Earth Catalysts

The regiodivergent catalysis of C-H alkylation with alkenes is of great interest and importance but has remained hardly explored to date. We report herein the first regiodivergent C-H alkylation of quinolines with alkenes by half-sandwich rare-earth catalysts. The regiodivergence was achieved by fine-tuning the metal/ligand combination or steric and electronic properties of the catalysts. The use of the C₅Me₅-ligated scandium catalyst Sc-3 for the reaction of quinolines with styrenes and that of the C₅Me₄H-ligated yttrium catalyst Y-2 for the reaction with aliphatic olefins exclusively afforded the corresponding C8-H alkylation products, thus constituting the first example of direct C8-H alkylation of neutral quinolines. In contrast, the Sc-3-catalyzed reaction of 2-arylquinolines with aliphatic olefins and the Y-2-catalyzed reaction with styrenes selectively gave the 2-aryl o-C-H alkylation products. On the basis of the catalyst/substrate-controlled regiodivergence, the sequential regiospecific dialkylation of quinolines with two different alkenes has also been achieved. DFT studies revealed that the C-H activation of 2-phenylquinoline at both the C8 position and an ortho position of the 2-phenyl substituent was possible, and these two types of initially formed C-H activation products were interconvertible through the coordination and C-H activation of another molecule of quinoline. The regioselectivity for the C-H alkylation reactions was governed not only by the ease of the initial formation of the C-H activation products but also by the energy barriers for their interconversions, as well as by the energy barriers or steric and electronic influences in the subsequent alkene insertion processes. This work has not only constituted an efficient protocol for the selective synthesis of diversified quinoline derivatives but also offered unprecedented insights into the C-H activation and transformation of quinolines and may help in the design of more efficient, selective, or complementary catalysts.

Arylphosphonate-Directed Ortho C-H Borylation: Rapid Entry into Highly-Substituted Phosphoarenes

Phosphonate-directed ortho C-H borylation of aromatic phosphonates is reported. Using simple starting materials and commercially accessible catalysts, this method provides steady access to o-phosphonate arylboronic esters bearing pendant functionality and flexible substitution patterns. These products serve as flexible precursors for a variety of highly substituted phosphoarenes, and in situ downstream functionalization of the products is described.

Cobalt-Catalyzed Regio- and Stereoselective Hydroboration of Allenes

An efficient pincer-ligand-based cobalt-complex-catalyzed allene hydroboration affording Z-allylic boronates is described. The reaction demonstrates an excellent regio- as well as Z-stereoselectivity and a wide substrate scope that tolerates many functional groups. Based on solvent-assisted electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (SAESI-MS) studies, a rationale for the cobalt-catalyzed hydroboration involving the highly selective insertion of an allene into the Co-H bond to form Z-allylic cobalt intermediates is proposed.

Iron-Catalysed C(sp2)-H Borylation Enabled by Carboxylate Activation

Arene C(sp²)-H bond borylation reactions provide rapid and efficient routes to synthetically versatile boronic esters. While iridium catalysts are well established for this reaction, the discovery and development of methods using Earth-abundant alternatives is limited to just a few examples. Applying an in situ catalyst activation method using air-stable and easily handed reagents, the iron-catalysed C(sp²)-H borylation reactions of furans and thiophenes under blue light irradiation have been developed. Key reaction intermediates have been prepared and characterised, and suggest two mechanistic pathways are in action involving both C-H metallation and the formation of an iron boryl species.

Rare Earth Single-Atom Catalysts for Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide Reduction

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted much attention owning to their high catalytic properties. Herein, yttrium and scandium rare earth SACs are successfully synthesized on a carbon support (Y₁/NC and Sc₁/NC). Different from the well-known M-N₄ structure of M-N-C (M = Fe, Co) catalysts, Sc and Y atoms with a large atomic radius tend to be anchored to the large-sized carbon defects through six coordination bonds of nitrogen and carbon. Although Y- and Sc-based nanomaterials are generally inactive to room-temperature electrochemical reactions, Y₁/NC and Sc₁/NC SACs exhibit catalytic activities to nitrogen reduction reaction and carbon dioxide reduction reaction due to the modulation of the local electronic structure of Y/Sc single atoms by N and C coordination. The catalytic functions of rare earth single atoms not only demonstrate the magical effect of SACs but also promote the application of rare earth catalysts in room-temperature electrochemical reactions.

Computational understanding of catalyst-controlled borylation of fluoroarenes: directed vs. undirected pathway

In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to understand the origin of the regioselective C–H borylation of aromatics catalyzed by Co(i)/^iPrPNP and Ir(iii)/dtbpy (4,4-di-tert-butyl bipyridine).

Ruthenium-catalyzed regio- and site-selective ortho C-H borylation of phenol derivatives

Efficient synthesis of o-borylphenols is achieved through the Ru-catalyzed regio- and site-selective sp2 C-H borylation of aryl diphenylphosphinites followed by removal of the phosphorus directing group. A successful application to aryl phosphites enables practical one-pot borylation of phenols, demonstrating high synthetic utility of this protocol.

A computational study of the reactivity of rare-earth/phosphorus Lewis pairs toward polymerization of conjugated polar alkenes

The polymerization mechanism of methyl methacrylate (MMA) catalyzed by rare-earth/phosphorus (RE/P) Lewis pairs has been systematically studied through density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Mechanistic Insights into Rhenium-Catalyzed Regioselective C-Alkenylation of Phenols with Internal Alkynes

A (μ-aryloxo)rhenium complex was isolated and confirmed as a key precatalyst for rhenium-catalyzed ortho-alkenylation (C-alkenylation) of unprotected phenols with alkynes. The reaction exclusively provided ortho-alkenylphenols; the formation of para or multiply alkenylated phenols and hydrophenoxylation (O-alkenylation) products was not observed. Several mechanistic experiments excluded a classical Friedel-Crafts-type mechanism, leading to the proposed phenolic hydroxyl group assisted electrophilic alkenylation as the most plausible reaction mechanism. For this purpose, the use of rhenium, a metal between the early and late transition metals in the periodic table, was key for the activation of both the soft carbon-carbon triple bond of the alkyne and the hard oxygen atom of the phenol, at the same time. ortho-Selective alkenylation with allenes also provided the corresponding adducts with a substitution pattern different from that obtained by the addition reaction with alkynes.

Synthesis of Self-Healing Polymers by Scandium-Catalyzed Copolymerization of Ethylene and Anisylpropylenes

Self-healing materials are of fundamental interest and practical importance. Herein we report the synthesis of a new class of self-healing materials, formed by the copolymerization of ethylene and anisyl-substituted propylenes using a sterically demanding half-sandwich scandium catalyst. The copolymerization proceeded in a controlled fashion, affording unique multi-block copolymers composed of relatively long alternating ethylene- alt-anisylpropylene sequences and short ethylene-ethylene units. By controlling the molecular weight and varying the anisyl substituents, a series of copolymers that show a wide range of glass-transition temperatures ( T_g) and mechanical properties have been obtained. The copolymers with T_g below room temperature showed high elastic modulus, high toughness, and remarkable self-healability, being able to autonomously self-heal upon mechanical damage not only in a dry environment but also in water and aqueous acid and alkaline solutions, while those with T_g around or above room temperature exhibited excellent shape-memory property. The unique mechanical properties may be ascribed to the phase separation of the crystalline ethylene-ethylene nanodomains from the ethylene- alt-anisylpropylene matrix.

Mechanistic study of the ligand controlled regioselectivity in iridium catalyzed C–H borylation of aromatic imines

DFT calculation indicates that in iridium catalyzed C–H borylation of aromatics, the ortho selectivity is proposed to be attributed to the electron donating effect of AQ ligand, while the meta selectivity is due to steric hindrance of TMP ligand.
