Abstract
Cobalt (Co) is a promising candidate to replace noble metals in the hydrogenation process, which is widely employed in the chemical industry. Although the catalytic performance for this reaction has been considered to be significantly dependent on the Co crystal phase, no satisfactory systematic studies have been conducted, because it is difficult to synthesize metal nanoparticles that have different crystalline structures with similar sizes. Here we report a new method for the synthesis of cobalt nanoparticles using hydrosilane as a reducing agent (hydrosilane-assisted method). This new method uses 1,3-butanediol and propylene glycol to successfully prepare fcc and hcp cobalt nanoparticles, respectively. These two types of Co nanoparticles have similar sizes and surface areas. The hcp Co nanoparticles exhibit higher catalytic performance than fcc nanoparticles for the hydrogenation of benzonitrile under mild conditions. The present hcp Co catalyst is also effective for highly selective benzyl amine production from benzonitrile without ammonia addition, whereas many catalytic systems require ammonia addition for selective benzyl amine production. Mechanistic studies revealed that the fast formation of the primary amine and the prevention of condensation and secondary amine hydrogenation promote selective benzonitrile hydrogenation for benzylamine over hcp Co nanoparticles.

Abstract
Nitrile hydrogenation via the in situ-generated PNP-FeII(H)2CO (1) catalyst leads to a previously inexplicable loss of mass balance. Reaction kinetics, reaction progress analysis, in situ pressure nuclear magnetic resonance, and X-ray diffraction analyses reveal a mechanism comprising reversible imine self-condensation and amine-imine condensation cascades that yield >95% primary amine. Imine self-condensation has never been reported in a nitrile hydrogenation mechanism. The reaction is first order in catalyst and hydrogen and zero order in benzonitrile when using 2-propanol as the solvent. Variable-temperature analysis revealed values for ΔG298 K⧧ (79.6 ± 26.8 kJ mol-1), ΔH⧧ (90.7 ± 9.7 kJ mol-1), and ΔS⧧ (37 ± 28 J mol-1 K-1), consistent with a solvent-mediated proton-shuttled dissociative transition state. This work provides a basis for future catalyst optimization and essential data for the design of continuous reactors with earth-abundant catalysts.

Abstract
Nitrile activation is a prominent topic in recent developments in chemistry, especially in organic, inorganic, biological chemistry, as well as in the natural synthesis of products and in the pharmaceutical industry. The activation of nitriles using both metal and non-metal precursors has attracted several researchers, who are exploring newer ways to synthesize novel compounds. Nitrile activation can be achieved by combining various catalytic double hydroelementation reactions, such as hydrosilylation, hydroboration, and hydrogenation of organonitriles using silanes, pinacolborane, and other sources of hydrogen. These methodologies have garnered considerable attention since they are effective in the reduction of organonitriles, whose end products are extensively applied in synthetic organic chemistry. In this review, we summarize the development of selective hydroborylation, hydrosilylation, dihydroborysilylation, and hydrogenation of organonitriles, as well as their reaction mechanisms and the role of metal complexes in the catalytic cycles. This review article explains various synthetic methodologies applied toward the reduction of organonitriles into corresponding amines.

Abstract
Amines play an important role in synthesizing drugs, pesticides, dyes, etc. Herein, we report on an efficient catalyst for the general construction of amine mediated by nickel boride nanoclusters supported by a TS-1 molecular sieve. Efficient production of amines was achieved via catalytic hydrogenation of N=X (X = C, O, H) bonds. In addition, the catalyst maintains excellent performance upon recycling. Compared with the previous reports, the high activity, simple preparation and reusability of the Ni-B catalyst in this work make it promising for industrial application in the production of amines.

Abstract
An efficient and highly selective heterogeneous catalyst system for nitrile hydrogenation was developed using unsupported palladium nanopores (PdNPore). The PdNPore-catalyzed selective hydrogenation of nitriles proceeded smoothly, without any additives, under mild conditions (low H2 pressure and low temperature) to yield primary amines with satisfactory to excellent yields. Systematic studies demonstrated that the high activity and excellent selectivity of the PdNPore originated from its good Lewis acidity and porous structure. No palladium leached from the PdNPore during the hydrogenation reaction. Moreover, the catalyst was easily recovered and reused without any loss of catalytic activity. A deuterium-hydrogen exchange reaction clearly indicated that the present hydrogenation involves heterolytic H2 splitting on the surface of the PdNPore catalyst.

Abstract
AbstractWe communicate a convenient method for the pressure hydrogenation of quinolines in aqueous solution by using a particulate cobalt-based catalyst that is prepared in situ from simple Co(OAc)2·4H2O through reduction with abundant zinc powder. This catalytic protocol permits a brisk and atom-efficient access to a variety of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines thereby relying solely on easy-to-handle reagents that are all readily obtained from commercial sources. Both the reaction setup assembly and the autoclave charging procedure are conducted on the bench outside an inert-gas-operated containment system, thus rendering the overall synthesis time-saving and operationally very simple.

Abstract
Flow reaction methods have been developed to selectively synthesize tertiary, secondary, and primary amines depending on heterogeneous platinum-group metal species under catalytic hydrogenation conditions using nitriles as starting materials. A 10 % Pd/C-packed catalyst cartridge affords symmetrically substituted tertiary amines in good to excellent yields. A 10 % Rh/C-packed catalyst cartridge enables the divergent synthesis of secondary and primary amines, with either cyclohexane or acetic acid as a solvent, respectively. Reaction parameters, such as the metal catalyst, solvent, and reaction temperature, and continuous-flow conditions, such as flow direction and second support of the catalyst in a catalyst cartridge, are quite important for controlling the reaction between the hydrogenation of nitriles and nucleophilic attack of in situ-generated amines to imine intermediates. A wide variety of aliphatic and aromatic nitriles could be highly selectively transformed into the corresponding tertiary, secondary, and primary amines by simply changing the metal species of the catalyst or flow parameters. Furthermore, the selective continuous-flow methodologies are applied over at least 72 h to afford three different types of amines in 80-99 % yield without decrease in catalytic activities.

Abstract
A simple and efficient copper-catalyzed selective transfer hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amine-boranes and secondary amines with an oxazaborolidine-BH3 complex is reported. The selectivity control was achieved under mild conditions by switching the solvent and the copper catalysts. More than 30 primary amine-boranes and 40 secondary amines were synthesized via this strategy in high selectivity and yields of up to 95%. The strategy was applied to the synthesis of 15N labeled in 89% yield.

Abstract
Tf2 O mediated intermolecular / intramolecular [2+2+2] cycloaddition between alkynes and nitriles has been developed for efficient construction of polysubstituted pyrimidines and bicyclopyrimidines. In presence of Tf2 O, aza-allene species were generated in situ through nitrile activation and subsequently participated in the [2+2+2] cycloaddition, which was fully supported by deuteration experiments. The reaction had good substrate extensibility with moderate to excellent yield including trimethylsilylalkynes. The method was utilized as a synthetic tool in the preparation of a luminescent metal complex.

Abstract
A mixture of HBPin with KOtBu was found to activate cobalt salt to form a heterotopic cobalt species that is highly active for catalytic intermolecular trimerization of alkynes. This protocol affords 1,2,4-regioisomers in good yields with high regioselectivities under mild conditions. These salient features, together with the operational simplicity and high efficiency, as well as obviating the use of any costly and/or air sensitive ligands, renders the protocol promising for practical applications.

Abstract
Homogeneous earth-abundant metal catalysis based on well-defined molecular complexes has achieved great advance in synthetic methodologies. However, sophisticated ligand, hazardous activator and multistep synthesis starting from base metal salts are generally required for the generation of active molecular catalysts, which may hinder their broad application in large scale organic synthesis. Therefore, the development of metal cluster catalysts formed in situ from simple earth-abundant metal salts is of importance for the practical utilization of base metal resource, yet it is still in its infancy. Herein, a mixture of catalytic amounts of cobalt (II) iodide and potassium tert-butoxide is discovered to be highly active for selective hydroboration of vinylarenes and dihydroboration of nitriles, affording a good yield of diversified hydroboration products that without isolation can readily undergo further one pot transformations. It should be highlighted that the alkoxide-pinacolborane combination acts as an efficient activation strategy to activate cobalt (II) iodide for the generation of metastable heterotopic cobalt catalysts in situ, which is proposed to be catalytically active species. Homogeneous earth-abundant metal catalysis based on well-defined metal complexes is of interest for organic synthesis, but typically employs expensive catalysts, air sensitive or synthetically challenging chemicals. Here, the authors report an efficient and regio-selective catalytic system for hydroboration of vinylarenes and organic nitriles with HBPin, using commercially available CoI2 and KOtBu under ligand-free conditions.

Abstract
We report on the first cobalt corrole that effectively mediates the homogeneous hydrogenation of structurally diverse nitroarenes to afford the corresponding amines. The given catalyst is easily assembled prior to use from 4-tert-butylbenzaldehyde and pyrrole followed by metalation of the resulting corrole macrocycle with cobalt(II) acetate. The thus-prepared complex is self-contained in that the hydrogenation protocol is free from the requirement for adding any auxiliary reagent to elicit the catalytic activity of the applied metal complex. Moreover, a containment system is not required for the assembly of the hydrogenation reaction set-up as both the autoclave and the reaction vessels are readily charged under a regular laboratory atmosphere.

Abstract
A well-defined nano-cobalt phosphide serves as an air-stable, highly active and reusable heterogeneous catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amines under mild reaction conditions.
The study of metal phosphide catalysts for organic synthesis is rare. We present, for the first time, a well-defined nano-cobalt phosphide (nano-Co2P) that can serve as a new class of catalysts for the hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amines. While earth-abundant metal catalysts for nitrile hydrogenation generally suffer from air-instability (pyrophoricity), low activity and the need for harsh reaction conditions, nano-Co2P shows both air-stability and remarkably high activity for the hydrogenation of valeronitrile with an excellent turnover number exceeding 58000, which is over 20- to 500-fold greater than that of those previously reported. Moreover, nano-Co2P efficiently promotes the hydrogenation of a wide range of nitriles, which include di- and tetra-nitriles, to the corresponding primary amines even under just 1 bar of H2 pressure, far milder than the conventional reaction conditions. Detailed spectroscopic studies reveal that the high performance of nano-Co2P is attributed to its air-stable metallic nature and the increase of the d-electron density of Co near the Fermi level by the phosphidation of Co, which thus leads to the accelerated activation of both nitrile and H2. Such a phosphidation provides a promising method for the design of an advanced catalyst with high activity and stability in highly efficient and environmentally benign hydrogenations.

Abstract
The commercially available and bench-stable Co(acac)2 /dpephos system is employed as a precatalyst for selective and efficient room temperature hydroboration of organic nitriles with HBPin to produce a series of N,N-diborylamines [RN(BPin)2 ], which react in situ with aldehydes to give aldimines. Formation of aldimines from N,N-diborylamines does not require a dehydrating agent, is applicable to a wide range of N,N-diborylamine and aldehyde substrates and is highly chemoselective, being unaffected by various common functional groups, such as alkenes, alkynes, secondary amines, ketones, esters, amides, carboxylic acids, pyridines, nitriles, and nitro compounds. The overall transformation represents a synthetically valuable approach to aldimines from nitriles and can be performed in a sequential one-pot manner, tolerating ester, lactone, carboxamide and unactivated alkene functionalities.

Abstract
Amines are important and valuable intermediates in the pharmaceutical, plastic
and agrochemical industry. Hence, there is an increasing interest in developing improved
process for the synthesis of amines. The heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of nitriles
is one of the most frequently applied methods for the synthesis of diverse amines, but the
homogeneous catalysis has also received a growing attention from the catalysis
community. This mini-review provides an overview of the recent achievements in the selective

Abstract
C═C bond breaking to access the C═N bond remains an underdeveloped area. A new protocol for C═C bond cleavage of alkenes under nonoxidative conditions to produce imines via an iron-catalyzed nitrene transfer reaction of 4-hydroxystilbenes with aryl azides is reported. The success of various sequential one-pot reactions reveals that the good compatibility of this method makes it very attractive for synthetic applications. On the basis of experimental observations, a plausible reaction mechanism is also proposed.

Abstract
The given report introduces a simple and user-friendly in situ method for the production of catalytically active cobalt particles. The approach circumvents the use of air- and moisture-sensitive reductants as well as the application of anhydrous Co-precursor salts. Accordingly, the described catalytic system is readily assembled under open-flask conditions by simply combining the components in the reaction vessel. Therefore, the arduous charging procedure of the reaction autoclave in a glovebox under an inert gas atmosphere is no longer necessary. In fact, the catalytically active material is obtained upon treatment of readily available Co(OAc)2·4 H2O with benign commercial Zn powder. The catalytic performance of the resultant material was tested in the heterogeneous hydrogenation of nitriles to the corresponding primary amines. Both activity and selectivity of the cobalt catalyst are significantly enhanced if a triflate-based Lewis acid and ammonia is added to the reaction mixture.
