Abstract
The influence of the P-M-P bite angle in diphosphine ligands on selectivity has been observed in various catalytic reactions. A better understanding of the ligand bite angle concept is important for the rational design of efficient catalytic systems. In the present work, the mechanism of cobalt-catalyzed C-H functionalization of aldehydes with enynes and how the diphosphine ligands alter regioselectivity were investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The catalytic cycle is initiated by the oxidative cyclization of enynes rather than the oxidative addition of aldehydes. Regioselectivity arises from competing σ-bond metathesis and migratory insertion steps, in which the steric effects of diphosphine ligands are the dominant factors influencing the activation barriers. The calculations indicate that σ-bond metathesis is more challenging and its feasibility is highly dependent on the ligand bite angle. The improved mechanistic understanding will enable further design of transition-metal-catalyzed selective cyclization reactions.

Abstract
A mild strategy for Co(III)-catalyzed C(sp2)-H cyanation of indoles was developed by using NCBLD as an electrophilic cyanation reagent and 1-butyl-3-acetylimidazole ditrifluoromethylsulfonimide ([BAIM]NTf2) as an environmentally friendly and recyclable solvent, and a series of 2-cyano products were obtained at room temperature. Adopting this strategy, the unnatural nucleotide fragment precursor of Remdesivir, which was a drug for COVID-19, was synthesized through cyano transformation, further proving the practicability of this cyanation method.

Abstract
A detailed mechanistic study of Co(III)-catalyzed C4-alkenylation of 3-acetylindole (1a) was done based on calculations at density functional theory (DFT) and correlated wave function levels. The whole catalytic cycle consists of four steps: C-H activation, olefin insertion, β-hydride elimination, and regeneration of the catalyst. The theoretical results support olefin insertion as the rate-determining step leading to the experimentally observed regioselectivity of the C4 site over the C2 site. By the analysis of three-dimensional (3D) geometries and the NCl plot, the preference for the C4 site over the C2 site could be attributed to the weaker repulsive interaction between the indole moiety and olefin in the transition states of the olefin insertion step for the former. The reliability of the theoretical mechanistic results is further confirmed through the DFT calculation of other related indole derivatives and olefin substrates.

Abstract
![]()
Spin-state energetics
of transition metal complexes remain one
of the most challenging targets for electronic structure methods.
Among single-reference wave function approaches, local correlation
approximations to coupled cluster theory, most notably the domain-based
local pair natural orbital (DLPNO) approach, hold the promise of bringing
the accuracy of coupled cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative
triple excitations, CCSD(T), to molecular systems of realistic size
with acceptable computational cost. However, recent studies on spin-state
energetics of iron-containing systems raised doubts about the ability
of the DLPNO approach to adequately and systematically approximate
energetics obtained by the reference-quality complete active space
second-order perturbation theory with coupled-cluster semicore correlation,
CASPT2/CC. Here, we revisit this problem using a diverse set of iron
complexes and examine several aspects of the application of the DLPNO
approach. We show that DLPNO-CCSD(T) can accurately reproduce both
CASPT2/CC and canonical CCSD(T) results if two basic principles are
followed. These include the consistent use of the improved iterative
(T1) versus the semicanonical perturbative triple corrections
and, most importantly, a simple two-point extrapolation to the PNO
space limit. The latter practically eliminates errors arising from
the default truncation of electron-pair correlation spaces and should
be viewed as standard practice in applications of the method to transition
metal spin-state energetics. Our results show that reference-quality
results can be readily achieved with DLPNO-CCSD(T) if these principles
are followed. This is important also in view of the applicability
of the method to larger single-reference systems and multinuclear
clusters, whose treatment of dynamic correlation would be challenging
for multireference-based approaches.

Abstract
Herein, we disclose an efficient cobalt-catalyzed three-component coupling of benzamides, diazo compounds, and tert-butyl hydroperoxide, which provides an efficient approach to construct C(sp2)-C(sp3) and C-O bonds in one-pot accompanied with C-H activation. This protocol features low catalyst loading (4 mol %), the avoidance of additives, and excellent functional group compatibility, providing three-component coupling adducts with high yields under mild conditions (up to 88%). Mechanism studies show that the reaction may involve a radical process.

Abstract
Photocarboxylation of alkyne with carbon dioxide represents a highly attractive strategy to prepare functionalized alkenes with high efficiency and atomic economy. However, the reaction mechanism, especially the sequence of elementary steps (leading to different reaction pathways), reaction modes of the H-transfer step and carboxylation step, spin and charge states of the cobalt catalyst, etc., is still an open question. Herein, density functional theory calculations are carried out to probe the mechanism of the Ir/Co-catalyzed photocarboxylation of alkynes. The overall catalytic cycle mainly consists of four steps: reductive-quenching of the Ir catalyst, hydrogen transfer (rate-determining step), outer sphere carboxylation, and the final catalyst regeneration step. Importantly, the cobalt catalyst can facilitate the H-transfer by an uncommon hydride coupled electron transfer (HCET) process. The pivotal electron delivery effect of the Co center enables a facile H-transfer to the α-C(alkyne) of the aryl group, resulting in the high regioselectivity for β-carboxylation.

Abstract
Combined computational and experimental studies elucidated the distinctive mechanistic features of electrochemical cobalt-catalyzed C-H oxygenation. A sequential electrochemical-chemical (EC) process was identified for the formation of an amidylcobalt(iii) intermediate. The synthesis, characterization, cyclic voltammetry studies, and stoichiometric reactions of the related amidylcobalt(iii) intermediate suggested that a second on-cycle electro-oxidation occurs on the amidylcobalt(iii) species, which leads to a formal Co(iv) intermediate. This amidylcobalt(iv) intermediate is essentially a cobalt(iii) complex with one additional single electron distributed on the coordinating heteroatoms. The radical nature of the coordinating pivalate allows the formal Co(iv) intermediate to undergo a novel carboxylate-assisted HAT mechanism to cleave the arene C-H bond, and a CMD mechanism could be excluded for a Co(iii/i) catalytic scenario. The mechanistic understanding of electrochemical cobalt-catalyzed C-H bond activation highlights the multi-tasking electro-oxidation and the underexplored reaction channels in electrochemical transition metal catalysis.

Unravelling the mechanism of cobalt-catalysed remote C-H nitration of 8-aminoquinolinamides and expansion of substrate scope towards 1-naphthylpicolinamide. Chem Sci 2020; 11:534-542. Abstract
Previously, an unexpected Co-catalysed remote C-H nitration of 8-aminoquinolinamide compounds was developed. This report provided a novel reactivity for Co which was assumed to proceed through the mechanistic pathway already known for analogous Cu-catalysed remote couplings of the same substrates. In order to shed light into this intriguing, and previously unobserved reactivity for Co, a thorough computational study has now been performed, which has allowed for a full understanding of the operative mechanism. This study demonstrates that the Co-catalysed remote coupling does not occur through the previously proposed Single Electron Transfer (SET) mechanism, but actually operates through a high-spin induced remote radical coupling mechanism, through a key intermediate with significant proportion of spin density at the 5- and 7-positions of the aminoquinoline ring. Additionally, new experimental data provides expansion of the synthetic utility of the original nitration procedure towards 1-naphthylpicolinamide which unexpectedly appears to operate via a subtly different mechanism despite having a similar chelate environment.

Abstract
A remarkable two-state reactivity scenario and an unusual multi-reference character have been computationally found in Co-catalysed C(sp3)–H amination. In addition, the investigation on the additive, aminating reagent, metal center, and auxiliary ligand provides implications for development of new catalytic C–H functionalization systems.
