Molybdenum-Doped Manganese Oxide as a Highly Efficient and Economical Water Oxidation Catalyst

Synthesis, Characterization, and Toxicity Assessment of Zinc Oxide-Doped Manganese Oxide Nanoparticles in a Macrophage Model

The doping of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) is a key tool for manipulating the properties of ENMs (e.g., electromagnetic, optical, etc.) for different therapeutic applications. However, adverse health outcomes and the cellular biointeraction of doped ENMs, compared to undoped counterparts, are not fully understood. Previously, we have shown that doping manganese oxide nanoparticles with ZnO (ZnO-MnO2 NPs) improved their catalytic properties. In this study, we assessed the toxicity of ZnO-MnO2 NPs in Raw 264.7 cells. NPs were prepared via an eco-friendly, co-precipitation method and characterized by several techniques, including transmission and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared. The physicochemical properties of ZnO-MnO2 NPs, including size, morphology, and crystalline structure, were almost identical to MnO2 NPs. However, ZnO-MnO2 NPs showed slightly larger particle aggregates and negative charge in cell culture media. Exposure to ZnO-MnO2 NPs resulted in lower toxicity based on the cell viability and functional assay (phagocytosis) data. Exposure to both NPs resulted in the activation of the cell inflammatory response and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Despite this, exposure to ZnO-MnO2 NPs was associated with a lower toxicity profile, and it resulted in a higher ROS burst and the activation of the cell antioxidant system, hence indicating that MnO2 NP-induced toxicity is potentially mediated via other ROS-independent pathways. Furthermore, the cellular internalization of ZnO-MnO2 NPs was lower compared to MnO2 NPs, and this could explain the lower extent of toxicity of ZnO-MnO2 NPs and suggests Zn-driven ROS generation. Together, the findings of this report suggest that ZnO (1%) doping impacts cellular biointeraction and the consequent toxicological outcomes of MnO2 NPs in Raw 264.7 cells.

(Electro)catalytic oxidation of sulfide and recovery of elemental sulfur from sulfide-laden streams

MnxOy coated over TiO2 nanotube array substrate was doped with Mo and polyaniline (PANI) and applied for electrochemical desulfurization of concentrated sulfide (HS-) solutions at basic pH, typical of biogas scrubbing solutions and industrial wastewater. Mo and PANI co-dopants significantly enhanced the anode activity towards sulfide oxidation and ensured its complete stability even in highly corrosive sulfide solutions (e.g., 200 mM HS-). This was due to the increased electrochemically active surface area, improved coating conductivity and reduced charge transfer resistance. The (electro)catalytic oxidation of HS- demonstrated robust performance with very limited impact of different operational parameters (e.g., dissolved oxygen, anode potential, HS- concentration). Due to the formation of elemental sulfur (S0) layer at the anode surface at basic pH, longer term anode usage requires its periodic removal. Chemical dissolution of S0 with toluene allows its rapid removal without affecting the anode activity, and easy recrystallization and recovery of pure sulfur.

MOF-Derived Mn2 O3 Nanocage with Oxygen Vacancies as Efficient Cathode Catalysts for Li-O2 Batteries

Designing efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts is the primary imperative for addressing the pivotal concerns confronting lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs). The microstructure of the catalyst is one of the key factors that influence the catalytic performance. This study proceeds to the advantage of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derivatives by annealing manganese 1,2,3-triazolate (MET-2) at different temperatures to optimize Mn2 O3 crystals for special microstructures. It is found that at 350 °C annealing temperature, the derived Mn2 O3 nanocage maintains the structure of MOF, the inherited high porosity and large specific surface area provide more channels for Li+ and O2 diffusion, beside the oxygen vacancies on the surface of Mn2 O3 nanocages enhance the electrocatalytic activity. With the synergy of unique structure and rich oxygen vacancies, the Mn2 O3 nanocage exhibits ultrahigh discharge capacity (21 070.6 mAh g-1 at 500 mA g-1 ) and excellent cycling stability (180 cycles at the limited capacity of 600 mAh g-1 with a current of 500 mA g-1 ). This study demonstrates that the Mn2 O3 nanocage structure containing oxygen vacancies can significantly enhance catalytic performance for LOBs, which provide a simple method for structurally designed transition metal oxide electrocatalysts.

Phase Engineering and Synchrotron-Based Study on Two-Dimensional Energy Nanomaterials

In recent years, there has been significant interest in the development of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with unique physicochemical properties for various energy applications. These properties are often derived from the phase structures established through a range of physical and chemical design strategies. A concrete analysis of the phase structures and real reaction mechanisms of 2D energy nanomaterials requires advanced characterization methods that offer valuable information as much as possible. Here, we present a comprehensive review on the phase engineering of typical 2D nanomaterials with the focus of synchrotron radiation characterizations. In particular, the intrinsic defects, atomic doping, intercalation, and heterogeneous interfaces on 2D nanomaterials are introduced, together with their applications in energy-related fields. Among them, synchrotron-based multiple spectroscopic techniques are emphasized to reveal their intrinsic phases and structures. More importantly, various in situ methods are employed to provide deep insights into their structural evolutions under working conditions or reaction processes of 2D energy nanomaterials. Finally, conclusions and research perspectives on the future outlook for the further development of 2D energy nanomaterials and synchrotron radiation light sources and integrated techniques are discussed.

Single Mo Atoms Stabilized on High-Entropy Perovskite Oxide: A Frontier for Aerobic Oxidative Desulfurization

The design and preparation of catalysts with both excellent stability and maximum exposure of catalytic active sites is highly desirable; however, it remains challenging in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, a entropy-stabilized single-site Mo catalyst via a high-entropy perovskite oxide LaMn_0.2Fe_0.2Co_0.2Ni_0.2Cu_0.2O₃ (HEPO) with abundant mesoporous structures was initiated by a sacrificial-template strategy. The presence of electrostatic interaction between graphene oxide and metal precursors effectively inhibits the agglomeration of precursor nanoparticles in a high-temperature calcination process, thereby endowing the atomically dispersed Mo⁶⁺ coordinated with four O atoms on the defective sites of HEPO. The unique structure of single-site Mo atoms' random distribution with an atomic scale greatly enriches the oxygen vacancy and increases surface exposure of the catalytic active sites on the Mo/HEPO-SAC catalyst. As a result, the obtained Mo/HEPO-SAC exhibits robust recycling stability and ultra-high oxidation activity (turnover frequency = 3.28 × 10^-2) for the catalytic removal of dibenzothiophene (DBT) with air as the oxidant, which represents the top level and is strikingly higher than the state-of-the-art oxidation desulfurization catalysts reported previously under the same or similar reaction conditions. Therefore, the finding here for the first time expands the application of single-atom Mo-supported HEPO materials into the field of ultra-deep oxidative desulfurization.

α-MnO2/FeCo-LDH on Nickel Foam as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Water Oxidation

The ever-expanding human societies on the one hand and the diminishing fossil fuel resources on the other have driven man to find a suitable, cheap, clean, and accessible source of energy. Water splitting is a good solution to this crisis. Because of the slow kinetics of water oxidation reaction, it is important to select efficient and durable electrocatalysts to improve the reaction kinetics. In this research, α-MnO₂/FeCo-LDH catalysts on nickel foam were developed for water oxidation, which exhibited good catalytic performance and stability in a 0.1 M KOH solution. The electrocatalysts were synthesized by hydrothermal methods and characterized by XRD, FTIR, Raman, SEM, TEM, EDS, and MAP techniques. The proposed modified electrode has large exchange current, low overpotential, and small Tafel slope. Here, only an overpotential of 210 mV is required to achieve a current density of 5 mA cm² with a Tafel slope of 70.4 mV dec^-1 in an alkaline solution.

MOF-derived MnO@C with high activity for electric field-assisted catalytic oxidation of aqueous pollutants

The activation of oxygen (O₂) under room condition is important for the utilization of air to perform oxidation. Here, we report a porous carbon-encapsulated MnO (MnO@C) derived from Mn metal-organic framework (MOF)grown in-situ on a graphite felt (GF) support. The MnO@C exhibits superior catalytic activity in an electric field-assisted catalytic oxidation system for the degradation of organic pollutants under room condition. The catalytic oxidation reaction applies a surface reaction pathway in which the surface-bound chemisorbed oxygen species are electro-oxidized and then involved in the oxidation of co-adsorbed organic pollutants. The abundant oxygen vacancies and oxygenated functional groups in MnO@C provide active sites for the chemisorption of O₂, and its conductive mesoporous structure allows facile electrons and mass transfer. As a result, the MnO@C/GF catalyst displays quite high turnover frequency (TOF) value as 0.038 mg-TOC mg-MnO^-1 min^-1, which is 6.66 times higher than that of the MnO/GF catalyst prepared by impregnation method as a comparison. With the aid of + 1.0 V of positive electric field, the catalytic oxidation system exhibits extensive effectiveness in mineralizing a variety of dyes, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and phenolic compounds under room condition with significantly enhanced biodegradability.

Oriented interlayered charge transfer in NiCoFe layered double hydroxide/MoO3 stacked heterostructure promoting the oxygen-evolving behavior

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the rate-limiting half reaction of water electrolysis, plays as a crucial role in improving the overall efficiency of the coupled hydrogen evolution. To date, earth-abundant OER catalysts have been extensively studied, while unfortunately their catalytic activity and operational stability still need to be further optimized. In this work, we fabricated a highly efficient OER catalyst based on two-dimensional (2D) NiCoFe layered double hydroxide (LDH)/MoO₃ stacked heterostructure with enriched active sites and optimal electronic structure via an electrostatic-driven self-assembly process. The rough surface of the 2D heterostructure could offer abundant reactive sites for the pre-oxidation reaction, thereby leading to fast generation of the high-valence active species for OER, and the multi-metal synergy and oriented interlayered charge transfer could further enhance the intrinsic OER activity, finally resulting in enhanced OER performance with low overpotential, large current density, high intrinsic activity and excellent operational stability.

Low-temperature oxidative removal of gaseous formaldehyde by an eggshell waste supported silver-manganese dioxide bimetallic catalyst with ultralow noble metal content

Under dark/low temperature (DLT) conditions, the oxidative removal of gaseous formaldehyde (FA) was studied using eggshell waste supported silver (Ag)-manganese dioxide (MnO₂) bimetallic catalysts. To assess the synergistic effects between the two different metals, 0.03%-Ag-(0.5-5%)-MnO₂/Eggshell catalysts were prepared and employed for DLT-oxidation of FA. The steady-state FA oxidation reaction rate (mmol g^-1 h^-1), when measured using 100 ppm FA at 80 °C (gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 5308 h^-1), varied as follows: Ag-1.5%-MnO₂/Eggshell-R (9.4) > Ag-3%-MnO₂/Eggshell-R (8.1) > Ag-1.5%-MnO₂/Eggshell (7.5) > Ag-5%-MnO₂/Eggshell-R (7.2) > Ag-1.5%-MnO₂/CaCO₃-R (6.8) > MnO₂-R (6) > Ag-0.5%-MnO₂/Eggshell-R (3.2) > Ag/Eggshell-R (2.6). (Here, 'R' denotes hydrogen-based thermochemical reduction pretreatment.) The temperature required for 90% FA conversion (T₉₀) at the same GHSV exhibited a contrary ordering: Ag/Eggshell-R (175 °C) > Ag-0.5%-MnO₂/Eggshell-R (123 °C) > Ag-5%-MnO₂/Eggshell-R (113 °C) > MnO₂-R (99 °C) > Ag-1.5%-MnO₂/Eggshell (96 °C) > Ag-3%-MnO₂/Eggshell-R (93 °C) > Ag-1.5%-MnO₂/Eggshell-R (77 °C). The eggshell catalyst outperformed the ones made of commercial calcium carbonate due to the presence of defects in the former. The MnO₂ co-catalyst enhances the catalytic activities through the capture and activation of atmospheric oxygen (O₂) with rapid catalytic regeneration. Also, MnO₂ favorably captures the hydrogen of the adsorbed FA molecules to make the oxidation pathway thermodynamically more favorable.

Selective Deoxygenation of Sludge Palm Oil into Diesel Range Fuel over Mn-Mo Supported on Activated Carbon Catalyst

Originating from deoxygenation (DO) technology, green diesel was innovated in order to act as a substitute for biodiesel, which contains unstable fatty acid alkyl ester owing to the existence of oxygenated species. Green diesel was manufactured following a process of catalytic DO of sludge palm oil (SPO). An engineered Mn(0.5%)-Mo(0.5%)/AC catalyst was employed in a hydrogen-free atmosphere. The influence of Manganese (Mn) species (0.1–1 wt.%) on DO reactivity and the dissemination of the product were examined. The Mn(0.5%)-Mo(0.5%)/AC formulation gave rise to a superior harvest of approximately 89% liquid hydrocarbons; a higher proportion of diesel fraction selectivity n-(C15+C17) was obtained in the region of 93%. Where acid and basic active sites were present on the Mn(0.5%)-Mo(0.5%)/AC catalyst, decarboxylation and decarbonylation reaction mechanisms of SPO to DO were enhanced. Evidence of the high degree of stability of the Mn(0.5%)-Mo(0.5%)/AC catalyst during five continuous runs was presented, which, in mild reaction conditions, gave rise to a consistent hydrocarbon harvest of >72% and >94% selectivity for n-(C15+C17).

Manganese-doped molybdenum oxide boosts catalytic performance of electrocatalytic wet air oxidation at ambient temperature

Mn-doping strategy was adopted to modify the structure of MoO₂ for enhancing its catalytic activity towards room-temperature electrocatalytic wet air oxidation (ECWAO) reaction. A series of Mn-doped MoO₂ were prepared on carbon support, and their structures were investigated to elucidate the productive effect of Mn doping on the catalytic activity of MoO₂. The incorporation of Mn^III/Mn^II into the MoO₂ lattice induced the transformation from Mo^IV to Mo^V and created more oxygen vacancies. Such structural modifications promoted the electron transfer of MoO₂ through the redox couples between Mo^VI/Mo^V/Mo^IV and Mn^III/Mn^II, and facilitated the transformation from O₂ to adsorbed oxygen species on MoO₂ surface. As a result, the ECWAO catalytic activities of Mn-doped MoO₂/graphite felt (MoO₂/GF) outperformed the activity of MoO₂/GF. Among the synthesized series, Mn_0.066:MoO₂/GF exhibited the highest activity with the maximum turnover frequency (TOF) promoted by 59% than the undoped MoO₂/GF. Under the catalysis of Mn_0.066:MoO₂/GF, the ECWAO process obtains mineralization efficiencies generally above 85% in degrading typical pharmaceutics and person care products (PPCPs). These findings are anticipated to open up a new venue in the design and fabrication of highly active catalysts for air oxidation reactions by using the strategy of selective dopant-induced structure modification.

In Situ Grown Co-Based Interstitial Compounds: Non-3d Metal and Non-Metal Dual Modulation Boosts Alkaline and Acidic Hydrogen Electrocatalysis

Interfacial engineering and elemental doping are the two parameters to enhance the catalytic behavior of cobalt nitrides for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, simultaneously combining these two parameters to improve the HER catalytic properties of cobalt nitrides in alkaline media is rarely reported and also remains challenging in acidic media. Herein, it is demonstrated that high-valence non-3d metal and non-metal integration can simultaneously achieve Co-based nitride/oxide interstitial compound phase boundaries on stainless steel mesh (denoted Mo-Co_5.47 N/N-CoO) for efficient HER in alkaline and acidic media. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the unique structure does not only realize multi-active sites, enhanced water dissociation kinetics, and low hydrogen adsorption free energy in alkaline media, but also enhances the positive charge density of hydrogen ions (H⁺ ) to effectively allow H⁺ to receive electrons from the catalysts surface toward promoting the HER in acidic media. As a result, the as-prepared Mo-Co_5.47 N/N-CoO demands HER overpotential of -28 mV@10 mA cm^-2 in an alkaline medium, and superior to the commercial Pt/C at a current density > 44 mA cm^-2 in acidic medium. This work paves a useful strategy to design efficient cobalt-based electrocatalysts for HER and beyond.

Electronic wastes: A near inexhaustible and an unimaginably wealthy resource for water splitting electrocatalysts

E-wastes comprise complex combinations of potentially toxic elements that cause detrimental effects of the environmental contamination; besides their posing threat, most of the products also contain valuable and recoverable materials (Li, Au, Ag, W, Se, Te, etc.), which make them distinct from other forms of industrial wastes. Most of these value-added elements which are primarily employed in electronic goods are disposed of by incineration and land-filling. This is a serious issue besides just environmental pollution, as IUPAC recognized that such ignorance of or poor attention to e-waste recycling has put several elements in the periodic table to the list of endangered elements. Recycling these wastes utilized for electrocatalytic water splitting to produce H₂. These recovered e-wastes materials are used as electrocatalysts for the water-splitting, additives to enhance reaction kinetics, and substrate electrodes as well. Recycling and recovery of value-added materials in the view of applying them to electrocatalytic water splitting with endangered elements' perspective have not been covered by any recent review so far. Hence, this review is dedicated to discussing the opportunities available with recycling e-wastes, types of value-added materials that can be recovered for water splitting, strategies exploited, and prospects are discussed in details.

Direct Observation of Oxygen Evolution and Surface Restructuring on Mn2O3 Nanocatalysts Using In Situ and Ex Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy

Direct observation of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on catalyst surface may significantly advance the mechanistic understanding of OER catalysis. Here, we report the first real-time nanoscale observation of chemical OER on Mn₂O₃ nanocatalyst surface using an in situ liquid holder in a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The oxygen evolution process can be directly visualized from the development of oxygen nanobubbles around nanocatalysts. The high spatial and temporal resolution further enables us to unravel the real-time formation of a surface layer on Mn₂O₃, whose thickness oscillation reflects a partially reversible surface restructuring relevant to OER catalysis. Ex situ atomic-resolution TEM on the residual surface layer after OER reveals its amorphous nature with reduced Mn valence and oxygen coordination. Besides shedding light on the dynamic OER catalysis, our results also demonstrate a powerful strategy combining in situ and ex situ TEM for investigating various chemical reaction mechanisms in liquid.

Donor-Acceptor Couples of Metal and Metal Oxides with Enriched Ni3+ Active Sites for Oxygen Evolution

Exploiting precious-metal-free and high-activity oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts has been in great demands toward many energy storage and conversion processes, for example, carbon dioxide reduction, metal-air batteries, and water splitting. In this study, the simple solid-state method is employed for coupling Ni (electron donors) with lower-Fermi-level MoO₂ or WO_x (electron acceptors) into donor-acceptor ensembles with well-designed interfaces as robust electrocatalysts for OER. The resulting Ni/MoO₂ and Ni/WO_x electrocatalysts exhibit smaller overpotentials of 287 and 333 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 as well as smaller Tafel slopes of 51 and 65 mV/dec, respectively, with respect to the single Ni, MoO₂, WO_x, and even the benchmark RuO₂ in 1 M KOH. Specially, on account of a higher Fermi level of Ni in comparison with MoO₂ and WO_x, their strong electronic interaction results in directional interfacial electron transfer and increases the hole density over Ni, dramatically enriching the population of high-valence Ni³⁺ active sites and decreasing the Fermi level of Ni. The existence of Ni³⁺ can strengthen the chemisorption of OH^-, and the downshift of the Ni Fermi level can significantly expedite migration of electrons toward the surface of catalysts during OER, thus synergistically boosting the OER catalytic performance. Furthermore, the inner Ni/MoO₂ and Ni/WO_x heterostructures and the electrochemically induced surface layers of oxides/hydroxides collectively boost the OER kinetics. This study highlights the importance of designing highly efficient OER electrocatalysts with high-valence active species (Ni³⁺) and better matched energy levels induced by the work function difference through interfacial engineering.

Ultrathin amorphous iron-doped cobalt-molybdenum hydroxide nanosheets for advanced oxygen evolution reactions

Developing the highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reactions (OERs), as vital half reactions of water splitting, is crucial for renewable energy technology. The electrocatalysts based on multi-component and hierarchically structured non-noble metal hydr(oxy)oxide materials are of great prospects. Herein, we report an efficient strategy at low temperatures for synthesizing amorphous iron-doped cobalt-molybdenum ultrathin hydroxide (Fe-CoMo UH) nanosheets. Benefiting from the ultrathin amorphous structure and multi-metal coordination, Fe-CoMo UH nanosheets exhibit outstanding performance for OERs with a low overpotential of 245 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, a small Tafel slope of 37 mV dec^-1 and an excellent stability for 90 h. The mass activity of Fe-CoMo UH is higher than that of commercial Ir/C and most of the transition metal hydroxide catalysts. This work provides a feasible consideration for the construction of promising efficient non-noble metal catalysts.
