Design of Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Catalysts for Energy and Environmental Applications

Carbonylative Self-Coupling of Aryl Boronic Acids Using a Confined Pd Catalyst within Melamine Dendron and Fibrous Nano-Silica: A CO Surrogate Approach

Development of heterogeneous catalysts with tunable activity and selectivity has posed a persistent challenge. This study addresses this challenge by fabricating a hybrid environment through the combination of mesoporous silica and N-rich melamine dendron via covalent grafting, allowing for controllable growth and encapsulation of Pd NPs. This catalyst presented an excellent catalytic activity for the oxidative carbonylative self-coupling of aryl boronic acids to afford symmetric biaryl ketones using N-formyl saccharin as a sustainable solid CO source and Cu as a co-catalyst.

Adsorption Performance of Heavy Metal Ions under Multifactorial Conditions by Synthesized Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Membranes

A series of hybridized charged membrane materials containing carboxyl and silyl groups were prepared via the epoxy ring-opening reaction and sol-gel methods using 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (WD-60) and polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG-6000) as raw materials and DMF as a solvent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermal gravimetric analyzer/differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC) analysis showed that the heat resistance of the polymerized materials could reach over 300 °C after hybridization. A comparison of the results of heavy metal lead and copper ions' adsorption tests on the materials at different times, temperatures, pHs, and concentrations showed that the hybridized membrane materials have good adsorption effects on heavy metals and better adsorption effects on lead ions. The maximum capacity obtained from optimized conditions for Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺ ions were 0.331 and 5.012 mmol/g. The experiments proved that this material is indeed a new environmentally friendly, energy-saving, high-efficiency material. Moreover, their adsorptions for Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺ ions will be evaluated as a model for the separation and recovery of heavy metal ions from wastewater.

Key technology of HX-NGS adsorption for treating organic matter in orchid carbon wastewater

In this article, COD, volatile phenol and ammonia nitrogen concentrations of the wastewater from semicarbon are reported as 38,000; 6,400 and 5,700 mg/L, respectively. According to the field test, when the pH of the wastewater is 9, the field test temperature is 20 °C, the adsorption time is 30 min and the optimal dosing ratio of nitrogen-doped gasification slag (HX-NGS) to the wastewater is 1:4, HX-NGS has the best removal effect on COD, volatile phenol and ammonia nitrogen in the wastewater from the semicarbon. The removal rates of COD, volatile phenol and ammonia nitrogen are 94, 91 and 85%, respectively, and the concentrations of the remaining COD, volatile phenol and ammonia nitrogen are 2,280, 576 and 855 mg/L, respectively, after regeneration, the material HX-NGS has a good effect on the treatment of the wastewater from the semicarbon. The reuse rate of the adsorption material is at least eight times. The adsorption effect of the material HX-NGS conforms to the mechanism law of dynamics and thermodynamics.

Fabrication of Swellable Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Polymers for CO2-Assisted Hydration of Propylene Epoxide

Swelling is a very common phenomenon in organic substances. However, the swelling behaviors of inorganic substances had rarely been reported. In this study, a new type of swellable organic-inorganic hybrid polymer (PIL@CHT) was designed and successfully synthesized through free-radical copolymerization of polymerizable phosphonium ionic liquid monomer and vinyl-functionalized hydrotalcite (CHT). The swelling behaviors of PIL@CHT in various solvents with a wide range of Hansen solubility parameters (δ_T) were investigated, and PIL@CHT exhibited excellent swellable capacity in the solvents with δ_T > 24.4 MPa^1/2. The swollen state of the hybrid PIL@CHT in water presented a network structure with a diameter of approximately 8-12 μm, and CHT particles were well dispersed to the channel of PIL. PIL@CHT was applied to catalyze the CO₂-assisted hydration of propylene oxide (PO), in which a cascade reaction including the cycloaddition of CO₂ and PO and the subsequent hydrolysis of propylene carbonate (PC) occurred. PIL@CHT, combining the active sites of PIL and CHT, synergistically catalyzed this cascade reaction and achieved a high yield (93.0%) and selectivity (98.2%) of 1,2-propanediol (1,2-MPG) under a low H₂O/PO ratio of 1.5/1. Moreover, the catalyst could be recycled seven times without any significant loss of catalytic activities and had good substrate generality.

Spotting Local Environments in Self-Assembled Monolayer-Protected Gold Nanoparticles

Organic-inorganic (O-I) nanomaterials are versatile platforms for an incredible high number of applications, ranging from heterogeneous catalysis to molecular sensing, cell targeting, imaging, and cancer diagnosis and therapy, just to name a few. Much of their potential stems from the unique control of organic environments around inorganic sites within a single O-I nanomaterial, which allows for new properties that were inaccessible using purely organic or inorganic materials. Structural and mechanistic characterization plays a key role in understanding and rationally designing such hybrid nanoconstructs. Here, we introduce a general methodology to identify and classify local (supra)molecular environments in an archetypal class of O-I nanomaterials, i.e., self-assembled monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles (SAM-AuNPs). By using an atomistic machine-learning guided workflow based on the Smooth Overlap of Atomic Positions (SOAP) descriptor, we analyze a collection of chemically different SAM-AuNPs and detect and compare local environments in a way that is agnostic and automated, i.e., with no need of a priori information and minimal user intervention. In addition, the computational results coupled with experimental electron spin resonance measurements prove that is possible to have more than one local environment inside SAMs, being the thickness of the organic shell and solvation primary factors in the determining number and nature of multiple coexisting environments. These indications are extended to complex mixed hydrophilic-hydrophobic SAMs. This work demonstrates that it is possible to spot and compare local molecular environments in SAM-AuNPs exploiting atomistic machine-learning approaches, establishes ground rules to control them, and holds the potential for the rational design of O-I nanomaterials instructed from data.

Organic-inorganic interface chemistry for sustainable materials

This mini-review focuses on up-to-date advances of hybrid materials consisting of organic and inorganic components and their applications in different chemical processes. The purpose of forming such hybrids is mainly to functionalize and stabilize inorganic supports by attaching an organic linker to enhance their performance towards a target application. The interface chemistry is present with the emphasis on the sustainability of their components, chemical changes in substrates during synthesis, improvements of their physical and chemical properties, and, finally, their implementation. The latter is the main sectioning feature of this review, while we present the most prosperous applications ranging from catalysis, through water purification and energy storage. Emphasis was given to materials that can be classified as green to the best in our consideration. As the summary, the current situation on developing hybrid materials as well as directions towards sustainable future using organic-inorganic hybrids are presented.

The interplay of chemical structure, physical properties, and structural design as a tool to modulate the properties of melanins within mesopores

The design of modern devices that can fulfil the requirements for sustainability and renewable energy applications calls for both new materials and a better understanding of the mixing of existing materials. Among those, surely organic–inorganic hybrids are gaining increasing attention due to the wide possibility to tailor their properties by accurate structural design and materials choice. In this work, we’ll describe the tight interplay between porous Si and two melanic polymers permeating the pores. Melanins are a class of biopolymers, known to cause pigmentation in many living species, that shows very interesting potential applications in a wide variety of fields. Given the complexity of the polymerization process beyond the formation and structure, the full understanding of the melanins' properties remains a challenging task. In this study, the use of a melanin/porous Si hybrid as a tool to characterize the polymer’s properties within mesopores gives new insights into the conduction mechanisms of melanins. We demonstrate the dramatic effect induced on these mechanisms in a confined environment by the presence of a thick interface. In previous studies, we already showed that the interactions at the interface between porous Si and eumelanin play a key role in determining the final properties of composite materials. Here, thanks to a careful monitoring of the photoconductivity properties of porous Si filled with melanins obtained by ammonia-induced solid-state polymerization (AISSP) of 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) or 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN), we investigate the effect of wet, dry, and vacuum cycles of storage from the freshly prepared samples to months-old samples. A computational study on the mobility of water molecules within a melanin polymer is also presented to complete the understanding of the experimental data. Our results demonstrate that: (a) the hydration-dependent behavior of melanins is recovered in large pores (≈ 60 nm diameter) while is almost absent in thinner pores (≈ 20 nm diameter); (b) DHN-melanin materials can generate higher photocurrents and proved to be stable for several weeks and more sensitive to the wet/dry variations.

Construction of organic-inorganic "chelate" adsorption sites on metal oxide semiconductor for room temperature NO2 sensing

Metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have been extensively studied for gas sensing due to their excellent chemical stability and adjustable electronic properties. However, there is still a lack of ingenious design strategies to achieve customizable gas detection in complex environments. Herein, a novel and scalable strategy of constructing organic-inorganic "chelate" adsorption sites is proposed to promote the affinity of MOS sensing materials to target molecules. Specifically, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was decorated on In₂O₃ tubes (AG/In_x), and its NO₂ sensing performance was studied. As a result, the optimal AG/In_x shows boosted room-temperature NO₂ response, and its response to 1 ppm NO₂ is 4.8 times that of In₂O₃. More attractively, the optimal AG/In_x exhibits good selectivity, as well as outstanding detection ability (R_g/R_a = 1.6) for low concentration NO₂ (20 ppb). Experimental results suggest that APTES-rGO not only acts as the electron acceptor to accelerate charge transfer, but also enhances NO₂ adsorption. Further theoretical calculations reveal that NO₂ is simultaneously adsorbed at rGO and APTES via a flexible "chelate" mechanism. The multidentate adsorption configuration remarkably strengthens the NO₂-host interaction, which is conducive to improving sensing performance. This work may inspire the material design of a new generation high-performance gas sensors.

Novel Pyridinium Based Ionic Liquid Promoter for Aqueous Knoevenagel Condensation: Green and Efficient Synthesis of New Derivatives with Their Anticancer Evaluation

Herein, a distinctive dihydroxy ionic liquid ([Py-2OH]OAc) was straightforwardly assembled from the sonication of pyridine with 2-chloropropane-1,3-diol by employing sodium acetate as an ion exchanger. The efficiency of the ([Py-2OH]OAc as a promoter for the sono-synthesis of a novel library of condensed products through DABCO-catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation process of adequate active cyclic methylenes and ninhydrin was next investigated using ultimate greener conditions. All of the reactions studied went cleanly and smoothly, and the resulting Knoevenagel condensation compounds were recovered in high yields without detecting the aldol intermediates in the end products. Compared to traditional strategies, the suggested approach has numerous advantages including mild reaction conditions with no by-products, eco-friendly solvent, outstanding performance in many green metrics, and usability in gram-scale synthesis. The reusability of the ionic liquid was also studied, with an overall retrieved yield of around 97% for seven consecutive runs without any substantial reduction in the performance. The novel obtained compounds were further assessed for their in vitro antitumor potential toward three human tumor cell lines: Colo-205 (colon cancer), MCF-7 (breast cancer), and A549 (lung cancer) by employing the MTT assay, and the findings were evaluated with the reference Doxorubicin. The results demonstrated that the majority of the developed products had potent activities at very low doses. Compounds comprising rhodanine (5) or chromane (12) moieties exhibited the most promising cytotoxic effects toward three cell lines, particularly rhodanine carboxylic acid derivative (5c), showing superior cytotoxic effects against the investigated cell lines compared to the reference drug. Furthermore, automated docking simulation studies were also performed to support the results obtained.

Marine Colloids Promote the Adaptation of Diatoms to Nitrate Contamination by Directional Electron Transfer

Nitrate contamination from human activities (e.g., domestic pollution, livestock breeding, and fertilizer application) threatens marine ecosystems and net primary productivity. As the main component of primary productivity, diatoms can adapt to high nitrate environments, but the mechanism is unclear. We found that electron transfer from marine colloids to diatoms enhances nitrogen uptake and assimilation under visible-light irradiation, providing a new pathway for nitrogen adaptation. Under irradiation, marine colloids exhibit semiconductor properties (e.g., the separation of electron-hole pairs) and can trigger the generation of free electrons and singlet oxygen. They also exhibit electron acceptor and donor properties, with the former being stronger than the latter, reacting with polysaccharides in extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) under high nitrogen stress, enhancing the elasticity and permeability of cells, and promoting nitrogen assimilation and electron transfer to marine diatom EPSs. Electron transfer promotes extracellular-to-intracellular nitrate transport by upregulating membrane nitrate transporters and nitrate reductase. The upregulation of anion transport genes and unsaturated fatty acids contributes to nitrogen assimilation. We estimate that colloids may increase the nitrate uptake efficiency of marine diatoms by 10.5-82.2%. These findings reveal a mechanism by which diatoms adapt to nitrate contamination and indicate a low-cost strategy to control marine pollution.

Diverse and efficient catalytic applications of new cockscomb flower-like Fe3O4@SiO2@KCC-1@MPTMS@CuII mesoporous nanocomposite in the environmentally benign reduction and reductive acetylation of nitroarenes and one-pot synthesis of some coumarin compounds

In this research, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@KCC-1@MPTMS@Cu^II as a new cockscomb flower-like mesoporous nanocomposite was prepared and characterized by various techniques including Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), SEM-based energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), UV-Vis spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) analyses. The as-prepared Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@KCC-1@MPTMS@Cu^II mesoporous nanocomposite exhibited satisfactory catalytic activity in the reduction and reductive acetylation of nitroarenes in a water medium and solvent-free one-pot synthesis of some coumarin compounds including 3,3'-(arylmethylene)bis(4-hydroxy-2H-chromen-2-ones) (namely, bis-coumarins) (3a-n) and 2-amino-4-aryl-7,7-dimethyl-5-oxo-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-chromene-3-carbonitriles (6a-n) along with acceptable turnover numbers (TONs) and turnover frequencies (TOFs). Furthermore, the mentioned Cu^II-containing mesoporous nanocatalyst was conveniently recovered by a magnet from reaction environments and reused for at least seven cycles without any significant loss in activity, which confirms its good stability.

Steering CO2 hydrogenation toward C-C coupling to hydrocarbons using porous organic polymer/metal interfaces

In the field of CO₂ conversion, a crucial reaction for a sustainable future, controlling the selectivity to improve C–C coupling to higher products is challenging because of the notorious inertness of CO₂ and the stepwise conversion that occurs on conventional catalysts. Here, we show that porous polymer encapsulation of metal-supported catalysts is capable of driving the selectivity in the CO₂ conversion to hydrocarbons. With this strategy, we achieve an outstanding improvement in C–C coupling that results in orders of magnitude higher turnover frequencies for hydrocarbon formation compared to conventional catalysts.

The conversion of CO₂ into fuels and chemicals is an attractive option for mitigating CO₂ emissions. Controlling the selectivity of this process is beneficial to produce desirable liquid fuels, but C–C coupling is a limiting step in the reaction that requires high pressures. Here, we propose a strategy to favor C–C coupling on a supported Ru/TiO₂ catalyst by encapsulating it within the polymer layers of an imine-based porous organic polymer that controls its selectivity. Such polymer confinement modifies the CO₂ hydrogenation behavior of the Ru surface, significantly enhancing the C₂₊ production turnover frequency by 10-fold. We demonstrate that the polymer layers affect the adsorption of reactants and intermediates while being stable under the demanding reaction conditions. Our findings highlight the promising opportunity of using polymer/metal interfaces for the rational engineering of active sites and as a general tool for controlling selective transformations in supported catalyst systems.

Robust Heterogeneous Photocatalyst for Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution Promotion: Immobilization of a Fluorescein Dye-Encapsulated Metal-Organic Cage on TiO2

The design of artificial photocatalytic devices that simulates the ingenious and efficient photosynthetic systems in nature is promising. Herein, a metal-organic cage [Pd₆(NPyCzPF)₁₂]¹²⁺ (MOC-PC6) integrating 12 organic ligands NPyCzBP and 6 Pd²⁺ catalytic centers is designed, which is well defined to include organic dye fluorescein (FL) for constructing a supramolecular photochemical molecular device (SPMD) FL@MOC-PC6. Photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between MOC-PC6 and the encapsulated FL has been observed by steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopy. FL@MOC-PC6 is successfully heterogenized with TiO₂ by a facile sol-gel method to achieve a robust heterogeneous FL@MOC-PC6-TiO₂. The close proximity between the Pd²⁺ catalytic site and FL included in the cage enables PET from the photoexcited FL to Pd²⁺ sites through a powerful intramolecular pathway. The photocatalytic hydrogen production assessments of the optimized 4 wt % FL@MOC-PC6-TiO₂ demonstrate an initial H₂ production rate of 2402 μmol g^-1 h^-1 and a turnover number of 4356 within 40 h, enhanced by 15-fold over that of a homogeneous FL@MOC-PC6. The effect of the MOC content on photocatalytic H₂ evolution (PHE) is investigated and the inefficient comparison systems, such as MOC-PC6, MOC-PC6-TiO₂, FL-sensitized MOC-PC6/FL-TiO₂, and analogue FL/MOC-PC6-TiO₂ with free FL, are evaluated. This study provides a creative and distinctive approach for the design and preparation of novel heterogeneous SPMD catalysts based on MOCs.

Composite materials based on heteroaggregated particles: Fundamentals and applications

Homoaggregation of dispersed particles, i.e., aggregation of particles of the same shape, charge, size, and composition, is a well-studied field and various theoretical and experimental approaches exist to understand the major phenomena involved in such processes. Besides, heteroaggregation of particles, i.e., aggregation of particles of different shape, charge, size, or composition, has attracted widespread interest due to its relevance in various biomedical, industrial, and environmental systems. For instance, heteroaggregation of plastic contaminant particles with naturally occurring solid materials in waters (e.g., clays, silica and organic polymers) plays an important role in the decontamination technologies. Moreover, nanofabrication processes involving heteroaggregation of particles to prepare novel composite materials are widely implemented in fundamental science and in more applied disciplines. In such procedures, stable particle dispersions are mixed and the desired structure forms owing to the presence of interparticle forces of various origins, which can be tuned by performing appropriate surface functionalization as well as altering the experimental conditions. These composites are widely used in different fields from sensing through catalysis to biomedical delivery. The present review summarizes the recent progresses in the field including new findings regarding the basic principles in particle heteroaggregation, preparation strategies of heteroaggregated structures of different morphology, and the application of the obtained hybrid composites. Such information will be very helpful to those involved in the design of novel composites consisting of different nano or colloidal particles.

Facile construction of novel organic-inorganic tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin/Bi2MoO6 heterojunction for tetracycline degradation: Performance, degradation pathways, intermediate toxicity analysis and mechanism insight

Developing durable photocatalysts with highly efficient antibiotics degradation is crucial for environment purification. Herein, tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) was loaded onto the surface of Bi₂MoO₆ microspheres to gain hierarchical organic-inorganic TCPP/Bi₂MoO₆ (TCPP/BMO) heterojunctions via a facile impregnation strategy. The catalytic properties of these catalysts were comprehensively investigated through the photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) under visible light. Among all the TCPP/BMO heterojunctions, the highest photodegradation rate constant (0.0278 min^-1) was achieved with 0.25 wt% TCPP (TCPP/BMO-2), which was approximately 1.15 folds greater than that of pristine Bi₂MoO₆ and far superior to pure TCPP. The extremely high photocatalytic performance is attributed to the interfacial interaction between TCPP and Bi₂MoO₆, which favors the efficient separation of charge carriers and the enhancement of visible-light absorbance. TCPP/BMO-2 possesses high mineralization capability and good recycling performance. Photo-induced O₂^-, h⁺, and OH were mainly responsible for the degradation of TC. The degradation pathways of TC and toxicity of degradation intermediates were analyzed based on the intermediates detected by the high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS) and the toxicity assessment by the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) prediction. A possible photocatalytic mechanism over TCPP/BMO is proposed. This work offers an insight in developing the porphyrin-based organic-inorganic heterojunctions for effectively remedying pharmaceutical wastewater.

Mesoporous Porphyrin-Silica Nanocomposite as Solid Acid Catalyst for High Yield Synthesis of HMF in Water

Solid acid catalysts occupy a special class in heterogeneous catalysis for their efficiency in eco-friendly conversion of biomass into demanding chemicals. We synthesized porphyrin containing porous organic polymers (PorPOPs) using colloidal silica as a support. Post-modification with chlorosulfonic acid enabled sulfonic acid functionalization, and the resulting material (PorPOPS) showed excellent activity and durability for the conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) in green solvent water. PorPOPS composite was characterized by N2 sorption, FTIR, TGA, CHNS, FESEM, TEM and XPS techniques, justifying the successful synthesis of organic networks and the grafting of sulfonic acid sites (5 wt%). Furthermore, a high surface area (260 m2/g) and the presence of distinct mesopores of ~15 nm were distinctly different from the porphyrin containing sulfonated porous organic polymer (FePOP-1S). Surprisingly the hybrid PorPOPS showed an excellent yield of HMF (85%) and high selectivity (>90%) in water as compared to microporous pristine-FePOP-1S (yield of HMF = 35%). This research demonstrates the requirement of organic modification on silica surfaces to tailor the activity and selectivity of the catalysts. We foresee that this research may inspire further applications of biomass conversion in water in future environmental research.
