RAFT Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly as a Strategy for Versatile Synthesis of Semifluorinated Liquid-Crystalline Block Copolymer Nanoobjects

Degradable Block Copolymer Nanoparticles Synthesized by Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) combines polymerization and in situ self-assembly of block copolymers in one system and has become a widely used method to prepare block copolymer nanoparticles at high concentrations. The persistence of polymers in the environment poses a huge threat to the ecosystem and represents a significant waste of resources. There is an urgent need to develop novel chemical approaches to synthesize degradable polymers. To meet with this demand, it is crucial to install degradability into PISA nanoparticles. Most recently, degradable PISA nanoparticles have been synthesized by introducing degradation mechanisms into either shell-forming or core-forming blocks. This Minireview summarizes the development in degradable block copolymer nanoparticles synthesized by PISA, including shell-degradable, core-degradable, and all-degradable nanoparticles. Future development will benefit from expansion of polymerization techniques with new degradation mechanisms and adaptation of high-throughput approaches for both PISA syntheses and degradation studies.

Liquid Crystalline Nanoparticles via Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly: Morphology Evolution and Function Regulation

Liquid crystalline nanoparticles (LC NPs) are a kind of polymer NPs with LC mesogens, which can form special anisotropic morphologies due to the influence of LC ordering. Owing to the stimuli-responsiveness of the LC blocks, LC NPs show abundant morphology evolution behaviors in response to external regulation. LC NPs have great application potential in nano-devices, drug delivery, special fibers and other fields. Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) method can synthesize LC NPs at high solid content, reducing the harsh demand for reaction solvent of the LC polymers, being a better choice for large-scale production. In this review, we introduced recent research progress of PISA-LC NPs by dividing them into several parts according to the LC mesogen, and discussed the improvement of experimental conditions and the potential application of these polymers.

Fluoropolymer Nanoparticles Synthesized via Reversible-Deactivation Radical Polymerizations and Their Applications

Fluorinated polymeric nanoparticles (FPNPs) combine unique properties of fluorocarbon and polymeric nanoparticles, which has stimulated massive interest for decades. However, fluoropolymers are not readily available from nature, resulting in synthetic developments to obtain FPNPs via free radical polymerizations. Recently, while increasing cutting-edge directions demand tailored FPNPs, such materials have been difficult to access via conventional approaches. Reversible-deactivation radical polymerizations (RDRPs) are powerful methods to afford well-defined polymers. Researchers have applied RDRPs to the fabrication of FPNPs, enabling the construction of particles with improved complexity in terms of structure, composition, morphology, and functionality. Related examples can be classified into three categories. First, well-defined fluoropolymers synthesized via RDRPs have been utilized as precursors to form FPNPs through self-folding and solution self-assembly. Second, thermally and photoinitiated RDRPs have been explored to realize in situ preparations of FPNPs with varied morphologies via polymerization-induced self-assembly and cross-linking copolymerization. Third, grafting from inorganic nanoparticles has been investigated based on RDRPs. Importantly, those advancements have promoted studies toward promising applications, including magnetic resonance imaging, biomedical delivery, energy storage, adsorption of perfluorinated alkyl substances, photosensitizers, and so on. This Review should present useful knowledge to researchers in polymer science and nanomaterials and inspire innovative ideas for the synthesis and applications of FPNPs.

Azobenzene-Containing Liquid Crystalline Twisted Ribbons via Polymerization-Induced Hierarchical Self-Assembly

Polymerization-induced self-assembly incorporating liquid crystallization, as a polymerization-induced hierarchical self-assembly (PIHSA) method to produce polymeric particles with anisotropic morphologies facilely and efficiently, has drawn wide attention recently. However, the means of regulating the morphologies of liquid crystalline (LC) polymer assemblies still need to be explored. Herein, a route is presented to fabricate the twisted ribbons via PIHSA containing azobenzene based on poor reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) control, called poorly controlled PIHSA. Cyano-4-(dodecylsulfanylthiocarbonyl)sulfanyl pentanoic acid-2-(2-pyridyldithio) ethyl ester is used as the RAFT agent with poor controllability, and the morphological evolution from ribbons to twisted ribbons can be observed in the corresponding PIHSA system. The formation mechanism of the twisted ribbons is studied systematically and the broad molecular weight distribution is considered to be the decisive factor. Moreover, the supramolecular chirality induced by symmetry breaking is also related to the twist of the ribbons. This study enriches the methods of controlling the morphologies of LC polymer particles and is helpful for further clarifying the mechanism of PIHSA.

Seeded RAFT Polymerization-Induced Self-assembly: Recent Advances and Future Opportunities

Over the past decade, polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has fully proved its versatility for scale-up production of block copolymer nanoparticles with tunable sizes and morphologies; yet, there are still some limitations. Recently, seeded PISA approaches combing PISA with heterogeneous seeded polymerizations have been greatly explored and are expected to overcome the limitations of traditional PISA. In this review, recent advances in seeded PISA that have expanded new horizons for PISA are highlighted including i) general considerations for seeded PISA (e.g., kinetics, the preparation of seeds, the selection of monomers), ii) morphological evolution induced by seeded PISA (e.g., from corona-shell-core nanoparticles to vesicles, vesicles-to-toroid, disassembly of vesicles into nanospheres), and iii) various well-defined nanoparticles with hierarchical and sophisticated morphologies (e.g., multicompartment micelles, porous vesicles, framboidal vesicles, AXn -type colloidal molecules). Finally, new insights into seeded PISA and future perspectives are proposed.

Core-Shell Polymeric Nanostructures with Intracellular ATP-Fueled dsRNA Delivery toward Genetic Control of Insect Pests

Transgenic RNA interference (RNAi) represents a burgeoning and promising alternative avenue to manage plant diseases and insect pests in plants. Nonviral nanostructured dsRNA carriers have been demonstrated to possess great potential to facilitate the application of RNAi. However, it remains a critical challenge to achieve the targeted and effective release of dsRNA into the pest cells, limiting the efficiency of the biological control of pests and diseases in practical applications. In this study, we designed and constructed a new type of core-shell polymeric nanostructure (CSPN) with controllable structure, eco-friendliness, and good biocompatibility, on which dsRNA can be efficiently loaded. Once loaded into CSPNs, the dsRNA can be effectively prevented from nonsense degradation by enzymes before entering cells, and it shows targeted and image-guided release triggered by intracellular ATP, which significantly increases the efficiency of gene transfection. Significantly, the in vivo study of the typical lepidoptera silkworm after oral feeding demonstrates the potential of dsCHT10 in CSPNs for a much better knockdown efficiency than that of naked dsCHT10. This innovation enables the nanotechnology developed for the disease microenvironment-triggered release of therapeutic genes for application in sustainable crop protection.

Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Triphilic Main-Chain-Type Semifluorinated Alternating Graft Copolymers in Aqueous Solution

Fluorinated copolymers can self-assemble in solution and form micelles with rare properties due to the peculiar behavior of fluorinated groups. However, the process description of the self-assembly is still largely phenomenological and difficult to explain due to the tendency of the fluorinated segments to segregate from both the hydrophilic and lipophilic segments, which can result in various morphologies. Herein, the controlled formation of ellipsoidal micelles, disklike micelles, and sheets by hierarchical self-assembly of triphilic main-chain-type semifluorinated alternating graft copolymers (AB)_n A-g-mOEG is presented (where A represents unit of α,ω-diiodoperfluoroalkane, B represents the unit of α,ω-unconjugated diene, and mOEG represents methoxy oligo(ethylene glycol)), which are synthesized by step transfer-addition and radical-termination (START) polymerization and azide-alkyne click chemistry. Furthermore, the possible self-assembly mechanism of these micron-level aggregates is proposed, which is ascribed to the hierarchical self-assembly, crowding effect of hydrophilic chains and the interfacial tension between the fluoroalkane and alkane segments. This study can provide a facile and highly efficient approach to the synthesis of main-chain-type fluorinated graft copolymers and expand the research field for the solution self-assembly of fluorinated copolymers.

RAFT polymerization-induced self-assembly of semifluorinated liquid-crystalline block copolymers

It is a major challenge to prepare commercially viable scale semifluorinated liquid-crystalline block copolymers (SEFL-BCPs) using solution processing techniques. The technology of selectively solvating one block in a suitable solvent to realize self-assembly provides a promising route for the preparation of core-corona block polymer materials with extensive potential applications. However, considerable limitations have been discovered after much practice. BCP assemblies often require a separate synthesis step and are performed at high dilution. Herein, a one-pot approach combining polymerization-induced and crystallization-driven self-assembly (PISA-CDSA) was used to obtain well-defined, precise compositions of SEFL-BCPs. It is first synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer ethanol dispersion polymerization between 1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodecyl acrylate and poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) at a concentration up to 20% v/v. Various morphologies, including 1D fiber-like micelles, 2D lamellar structures, and fusion structures, were first observed via transmission electron microscopy. This scalable PISA-CDSA strategy is greatly expanding the morphology scope and applicability of the polymer liquid crystal materials science field.

Steroid-Based Liquid Crystalline Polymers: Responsive and Biocompatible Materials of the Future

Steroid-based liquid crystal polymers and co-polymers have come a long way, with new and significant advances being made every year. This paper reviews some of the recent key developments in steroid-based liquid crystal polymers and co-polymers. It covers the structure–property relationship between cholesterol and sterol-based compounds and their corresponding polymers, and the influence of chemical structure and synthesis conditions on the liquid crystalline behaviour. An overview of the nature of self-assembly of these materials in solvents and through polymerisation is given. The role of liquid crystalline properties in the applications of these materials, in the creation of nano-objects, drug delivery and biomedicine and photonic and electronic devices, is discussed.

In situ generation and evolution of polymer toroids by liquid crystallization-assisted seeded dispersion polymerization

An effective method is presented for preparing high solid content azobenzene-containing triblock copolymer toroidal assemblies by liquid crystallization-assisted seeded dispersion polymerization. Vesicles are prepared via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA), and used as seeds for further chain extension. By introducing smectic liquid crystalline (LC) ordering into the core-forming block, toroids are formed in situ during the polymerization. The morphological transformation from toroids to barrels is observed under ultraviolet irradiation due to the photo-isomerization of the azobenzene mesogens. This strategy expands the scope of tunable anisotropic morphologies for potential functional nanomaterials based on a LC copolymer by seeded dispersion polymerization.

Stimuli-Responsive Pickering Emulsions Regulated via Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly Nanoparticles

With the development of reversible deactivated radical polymerization techniques, polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is emerging as a facile method to prepare block copolymer nanoparticles in situ with high concentrations, providing wide potential applications in different fields, including nanomedicine, coatings, nanomanufacture, and Pickering emulsions. Polymeric emulsifiers synthesized by PISA have many advantages comparing with conventional nanoparticle emulsifiers. The morphologies, size, and amphiphilicity can be readily regulated via the synthetic process, post-modification, and external stimuli. By introducing stimulus responsiveness into PISA nanoparticles, Pickering emulsions stabilized with these nanoparticles can be endowed with "smart" behaviors. The emulsions can be regulated in reversible emulsification and demulsification. In this review, the authors focus on recent progress on Pickering emulsions stabilized by PISA nanoparticles with stimuli-responsiveness. The factors affecting the stability of emulsions during emulsification and demulsification are discussed in details. Furthermore, some viewpoints for preparing stimuli-responsive emulsions and their applications in antibacterial agents, diphase reaction platforms, and multi-emulsions are discussed as well. Finally, the future developments and applications of stimuli-responsive Pickering emulsions stabilized by PISA nanoparticles are highlighted.

Self-Assembly of Copolymers Containing Crystallizable Blocks: Strategies and Applications

The self-assembly of copolymers containing crystallizable block in solution has received increasing attentions in the past few years. Various strategies including crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) and polymerization-induced CDSA (PI-CDSA) have been widely developed. Abundant self-assembly morphologies were captured and advanced applications have been attempted. In this review, the synthetic strategies including the mechanisms and characteristics are highlighted, the survey on the advanced applications of crystalline nano-assemblies are collected. This review is hoped to depict a comprehensive outline for self-assembly of copolymers containing crystallizable block in recent years and to prompt the development of the self-assembly technology in interdisciplinary field. Host-guest complexation modulated aqueous polymerization-induced self-assembly for monodisperse hierarchical nanoflowers

This work presents a one-step synthesis of monodisperse nanoflowers by aqueous polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA), modulated by host-guest interactions. Owing to the low monomer swelling of nanoparticles restricted by host-guest complexation, hierarchical surficial micellar structures were generated at the outer surface of the vesicles, forming fractal nanoflowers with a diameter polydispersity as low as 1.01. Our method allows the straightforward synthesis of monodisperse hierarchical nanoparticles for a wide range of applications.

Constructing helical nanowires via polymerization-induced self-assembly

While reliable strategies for constructing block copolymer (BCP) nanowires have been developed, helical nanowires are rarely reported in polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). Herein, in this work, a new strategy for constructing helical nanowires was developed via PISA mediated by a fluorinated stabilizer block. Ultralong nanowires with helical structure can be readily produced in a wide range of block compositions. In addition, the generality of this strategy was well testified by expanding monomer types. The achiral BCP nano-objects underwent a morphology transition from spheres to helical nanowires during aging. We believe this work will provide a general strategy for producing helical nanowires through PISA of achiral BCPs.

Emerging applications for living crystallization-driven self-assembly

The use of crystallization as a tool to control the self-assembly of polymeric and molecular amphiphiles in solution is attracting growing attention for the creation of non-spherical nanoparticles and more complex, hierarchical assemblies. In particular, the seeded growth method termed living crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) has been established as an ambient temperature and potentially scalable platform for the preparation of low dispersity samples of core-shell fiber-like or platelet micellar nanoparticles. Significantly, this method permits predictable control of size, and access to branched and segmented structures where functionality is spatially-defined. Living CDSA operates under kinetic control and shows many analogies with living chain-growth polymerizations of molecular organic monomers that afford well-defined covalent polymers of controlled length except that it covers a much longer length scale (ca. 20 nm to 10 μm). The method has been applied to a rapidly expanding range of crystallizable polymeric amphiphiles, which includes block copolymers and charge-capped homopolymers, to form assemblies with crystalline cores and solvated coronas. Living CDSA seeded growth methods have also been transposed to a wide variety of π-stacking and hydrogen-bonding molecular species that form supramolecular polymers in processes termed "living supramolecular polymerizations". In this article we outline the main features of the living CDSA method and then survey the promising emerging applications for the resulting nanoparticles in fields such as nanomedicine, colloid stabilization, catalysis, optoelectronics, information storage, and surface functionalization.

Constructing Cylindrical Nanostructures Via Directional Morphology Evolution Induced by Seeded Polymerization

Herein, spindle-shaped block copolymer (BCP) nanoparticles are used in seeded polymerization of methyl methacrylate as a novel approach to generating cylindrical nanostructures. The chain-extension of BCP seeds by an amorphous coil-type polymer within the seed core composed of semifluorinated liquid-crystalline blocks triggers the deforming, stretching, and directional growth of the seeds along the long axis, eventually leads to nanorods.

Directional effect on the fusion of ellipsoidal morphologies into nanorods and nanotubes

Particle fusion is well-recognized as an important spontaneous process to produce higher-order nanostructures during morphology transition in polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). However, to our knowledge, the directional contact, adhesion, and fusion of adjacent nanoparticles have been rarely elucidated in PISA. Herein, a directional fusion of ellipsoidal morphologies was demonstrated during PISA of semi-fluorinated liquid-crystalline (SFLC) block copolymers. The ellipsoidal nanostructures, including micelles and vesicles, preferred to undergo a directional fusion in a head-to-head model, leading to the formation of nanorods and nanotubes, respectively. We believe the directional fusion will offer insightful guidance in PISA to the preparation of complicated functional nanostructures.

Pickering Emulsifiers Based on Block Copolymer Nanoparticles Prepared by Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Block copolymer nanoparticles prepared via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) represent an emerging class of organic Pickering emulsifiers. Such nanoparticles are readily prepared by chain-extending a soluble homopolymer precursor using a carefully selected second monomer that forms an insoluble block in the chosen solvent. As the second block grows, it undergoes phase separation that drives in situ self-assembly to form sterically stabilized nanoparticles. Conducting such PISA syntheses in aqueous solution leads to hydrophilic nanoparticles that enable the formation of oil-in-water emulsions. Alternatively, hydrophobic nanoparticles can be prepared in non-polar media (e.g., n-alkanes), which enables water-in-oil emulsions to be produced. In this review, the specific advantages of using PISA to prepare such bespoke Pickering emulsifiers are highlighted, which include fine control over particle size, copolymer morphology, and surface wettability. This has enabled various fundamental scientific questions regarding Pickering emulsions to be addressed. Moreover, block copolymer nanoparticles can be used to prepare Pickering emulsions over various length scales, with mean droplet diameters ranging from millimeters to less than 200 nm.

Polymerization-induced self-assembly for the fabrication of polymeric nano-objects with enhanced structural stability by cross-linking

This review discusses the strategies of core-cross-linking in most of the PISA literatures (including post-polymerization cross-linking, photo-cross-linking and in situ cross-linking) and the applications of the cross-linked nano-objects.

Scalable preparation of alternating block copolymer particles with inverse bicontinuous mesophases

Block copolymer particles with controlled morphologies are of great significance in nanomaterials and nanotechnology. However, ordered inverse morphologies are difficult to achieve due to complex mechanism and formation conditions. Here we report scalable preparation of amphiphilic alternating block copolymer particles with inverse bicontinuous mesophases via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). Concentrated dispersion copolymerizations (up to 40% solid content) of styrene (St) and pentafluorostyrene (PFS) employing a short poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA29) stabilizer block lead to the formation of well-defined, highly asymmetric PDMA29-b-P(St-alt-PFS)x block copolymers with precise compositions and various morphologies, from simple spheres to ordered inverse cubosome mesophases. The particle morphology is affected by the molecular weight, solid content, and nature of the cosolvents. The cubosome structure is confirmed by electron microscopies and small angle X-ray scattering spectroscopy. This scalable PISA approach offers facile access to ordered inverse mesophases, significantly expanding the PISA morphology scope and enabling its applicability to the materials science fields.

Nonspherical Liquid Crystalline Assemblies with Programmable Shape Transformation

Liquid crystalline (LC) assemblies with tailored shape and programmable shape transformation were prepared via polymerization-induced self-assembly. The influence of polymerization temperature and solvent on the shape of the LC assemblies indicated that shape of the LC assemblies could be delicately regulated by the repulsive interaction among the solvophilic chains and LC ordering. Programmable shape transformation of ellipsoidal LC assemblies was achieved, taking advantage of the smectic-to-isotropic phase transition. The ellipsoidal assemblies could remain ellipsoids or transform to faceted spheres and spheres, depending on the temperature procedure used. Besides, the generated spheres could be reshaped to ellipsoids with high shape recovery ratio. Small angle X-ray scattering study indicated that the interplay of the reversible smectic-to-isotropic phase transition and kinetic trapping underpins the programmed shape transformation. As a general approach to LC assemblies with programmable shape transformation, our strategy would provide a reliable platform for nanoactuators, nanomotors, and adaptive colloidal devices.

Poly(Pentafluorophenyl Methacrylate)-Based Nano-Objects Developed by Photo-PISA as Scaffolds for Post-Polymerization Functionalization

The preparation of a functional fluorine-containing block copolymer using reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer dispersion polymerization in DMSO as a "platform/scaffold" is explored. The nanostructures, comprised of poly(ethyleneglycol)-b-poly(pentafluorophenyl methacrylate) or PEG-b-P(PFMA), are formulated via photo-initiated polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) followed by post-polymerization modification using different primary amines. A combination of light scattering and microscopy techniques are used to characterize the resulting morphologies. It is found that upon varying the degree of polymerization of the core-forming block of PFMA, only uniform spheres (with textured surfaces) are obtained. These nanostructures are subsequently modified by cross-linking using a non-responsive and a redox-responsive diamine, thus imparting stability to the particles in water. In response to intracellular glutathione (GSH) concentration, destabilization of the micelles occurs as evidenced by dynamic light scattering. The well-defined size, inherent reactivity of the nanoparticles toward nucleophiles, and GSH-responsiveness of the nanospheres make them ideal scaffolds for drug delivery to intracellular compartments with reductive environments.

Polymerization-Induced Nanostructural Transitions Driven by In Situ Polymer Grafting

Polymerization-induced structural transitions have gained attention recently due to the ease of creating and modifying nanostructured materials with controlled morphologies and length scales. Here, we show that order-order and disorder-order nanostructural transitions are possible using in situ polymer grafting from the diblock polymer, poly(styrene)-block-poly(butadiene). In our approach, we are able to control the resulting nanostructure (lamellar, hexagonally packed cylinders, and disordered spheres) by changing the initial block polymer/monomer ratio. The nanostructural transition occurs by a grafting from mechanism in which poly(styrene) chains are initiated from the poly(butadiene) block via the creation of an allylic radical, which increases the overall molecular weight and the poly(styrene) volume fraction. The work presented here highlights how the chemical process of converting standard linear diblock copolymers to grafted block polymers drives interesting and controllable polymerization-induced morphology transitions.

New Insights into RAFT Dispersion Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly: From Monomer Library, Morphological Control, and Stability to Driving Forces

Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has been established as an efficient, robust, and versatile approach to synthesize various block copolymer nano-objects with controlled morphologies, tunable dimensions, and diverse functions. The relatively high concentration and potential scalability makes it a promising technique for industrial production and practical applications of functional polymeric nanoparticles. This feature article outlines recent advances in PISA via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer dispersion polymerization. Considerable efforts to understand morphological control, broaden the monomer library, enhance morphological stability, and incorporate multiple driving forces in PISA syntheses are summarized herein. Finally, perspectives on the future of PISA research are discussed.

Polymerization-induced self-assembly of liquid crystalline ABC triblock copolymers with long solvophilic chains
